I really like these reviews because they really go through almost everything about these films in a way other reviewers sometimes fail to do.
Could you review other Pixar movies? I mean, the new ones? Like Incredibles 2, Onward, Soul and Luca?
Or review some non Simpsons, nomn Pixar movies? Like Wreck It Wralph, Iron man, Star Wars and How To Train Your Dragon since you mentioned them in these reviews?
      Please?

One of the most underrated aspects about Wall-E in my opinion is the camerawork. Have you ever noticed how in nearly every scene, the camera is *never* stationary? It moves a tiny bit from a place to another, even in still shots. I think this is a brilliant decision because Wall-E the robot's movement is very mechanical. It's not as fluid as Eve or the rest of the Axiom robots. Even very miniscule movements of the camera makes Wall-E feel like he's just as fluid in motion as all the other robots, and it makes the movie overall less draining than it could be. Plus, it must've been a draining process I'd imagine getting the camera to behave like that.

For some reason, I couldn't decide if I wanted to pronounce "WALL-E" with the accent on the first syllable or the second. I think it catches me offguard when reading the word, with that hyphen. Hope it's not too distracting.
Thanks everyone for the support when working through these videos. I know this is a Simpsons channel predominantly, but I thought these would be a fun challenge and a chance to try something new. I definitely underestimated how much work this series would take. Film reviews are challenging... I really admire people who can crank them out consistently.

I would love for you to keep making these animated movie reviews. These have been some of the best content on the site and if your How to Train Your Dragon review is anything to go by you'd have no problem jumping over to another studio. I also appreciate how you keep things light and positive. Too many reviews on this site are unnecessarily cynical or negative.

Disney apparently wanted Pixar to choose a different film for the sings as they didn't own "Hello, Dolly!"
As usual, Pixar didn't listen, and got "Hello, Dolly!" anyway, which is why I love them.

I guess if anything, you could continue and get the film(s) that popped up while you were doing all this. I mean, Incredibles 2 is now on DVD/Blu-ray and nothing stopped you from slipping Coco in there. I know it wouldn't be a great one to end on, but you could at least put it in as say "Perfect Pixar Extra" or something.

Great review and great series! WALL-E is my favorite Pixar film as well -- tied with the Toy Story movies in terms of quality, but it gets the edge due to originality. The common criticism is that the second half isn't as amazing as the first, which is true, but let's also remember that many, if not most, of the best scenes are actually in the second half. The Space Dance. Rogue Robots. EVE's airlock rescue ("Directive?"). And of course that beautiful ending where EVE and WALL-E are reunited with his memory intact.

I really hope you make more content like these videos. You've sparked a nascent interest in The Simpsons in me, but the way you thoughtfully deconstruct the Pixar films in this series is honestly the biggest draw of your channel for me and I'd love to see more long videos like them. I know it's time-consuming and a lot of thought goes in, so don't feel pressure to keep them going. My point is that if you're enjoying yourself with these, and there are other long-form analyses you're interested in, I would definitely encourage you to go for it! Awesome work as always!

WALL-E can also show a hint of resistance when he is blamed for or is uncalled for, during of which he stood up to EVE for her misjudgments and frustrations upon him taking the plant and causing mischief. While he May cower and run away from foes more advanced and deadly than him, he is willing to fight and stand up for what’s right. During of which he slammed AUTO with his chest door when fighting for the plant when he at the bridge. He also shot a laser at an incoming Steward.

This is my second favourite Pixar movie (Inside out is my favourite), and I feel like both share the same problems, in that the later parts move away a bit too much from what made the movies so good, and too much into wacky hijinks. I love inside out's early parts, but feel like the movie loses some of its magic when Joy & Sadness are taken away from the control room. I love Wall-E's early part, but feel like it also loses some of its magic once they get on the human ship. But neither move ever gets into what I would even remotely consider "bad" territory, I think both are really good movies.

6:09 “He barely learns anything.” I’m sorry, whaaaaaaaaaaa???!!!! 🤨 If I’m not mistaken, I can assure you that WALL-E had learned something. And also did you mention that EVE is the only one who gets strong character development, im at complete loss of words! ☹️ Allow me to demonstrate. WALL-E has been by himself for 700 years and was so bored of his job he was wishing to be more than a robot who compose with his directive. He’s designed to compact and dispose of trash but what does he do? He collects items he finds interesting and takes them to his truck and fascinates by them. He also has a tendency to understand animal language when training his cockroach. And when he fascinated the couple of “Hello Dolly!” He begins to wonder “what if he could find love? What if he could find someone to share his feelings with?” So when EVE arrives, he is quickly enamored to her and journeyed through thousandths of graphs from space to win her heart. Here’s where the development starts. 1. WALL-E is thoughtful and considerate, unlike armed robots he uses his sole laser for a special tool instead of a weapon and is generally kind enough to stop and lend a shovel to those who are in the ground. What we see through him is that unlike cold people, WALL-E is very sweet, generous and is hesitant to hurt such a person or robot, even when dangerous or threatening to him. 2. WALL-E from the beginning was a bit naive, bumbling and not very quick to act in time, when finding a fire extinguisher he toyed with it only to flounder onto the ground with it and throw it away in dismay, however he soon found its use when drifting with EVE through space needing to rescue the plant. He also can be quite timid when trying to approach EVE because of her cold behavior and tendency to shoot first and ask questions later, so he stood 25 inches away from her until she was in need for comforting. He also can be quite clumsy when the film is in bed for comedy, he is usually shown to be ramming into shopping carts, crushed by pipes, struck by lighting and AUTO’s tazer (due to his slow movements) also cussing traffic jams between the Axiom. However, his clumsy nature can be put to great use, such as when he showed John and Mary the world outside their screens and released a group of imprisoned robots from the wretched repair center. Also he misunderstood EVE when it looked to him as she was being tortured when in reality, she was being checked over, leading him to make a distribution and remorse about his actions. And while he may admit his own flaws of being a little to chaotic and lacking self-confidence, WALL-E still ushers to try and make things right. 3. His relationship with EVE, when meeting EVE, he is quickly infatuated of her wanting to make friends with her, but upon realizing how dangerous she is begins to back up. When finding how lonely she felt, he decided to approach and chat with her about his purpose. When she giggles about his sense of humor and hesitant mods to inform his name, WALL-E becomes very abashed by her amusement. When she discovers his collection and is mixed about them, WALL-E attempts to calm her down and help explain what they represent. When EVE shuts down, WALL-E wants to get her back to life but cannot. When failing, WALL-E gives up and slowly returns to his humble job in the most sluggish way possible, however his concern and confidence is revived when EVE is transported and races back to her side. When EVE is being examined, WALL-E wants to be by her presence again, but is bewildered by her sudden outburst of him showing up on the Axiom unnoticed, but is seemingly not offended. When WALL-E is blamed for something he did or did not do on purpose, he is shown to tap his fingers in a sheepish tone or cower down underneath his form and whimper. WALL-E may not have an awareness to his problems, but when he finds out EVE is sending him away for his innocent mistakes, he quickly jumps in and stands up to EVE for mistreating and wrongfully stating he took away the plant, this goes to show that even though WALL-E may be involved in a serious-not-so serious conflict, he is willing to take his time to think or come in between those problems and stand up to those who blame him. When The plant is recovered, EVE takes her breath to apologize, but instead of waiting for a slight answer WALL-E takes and represents the plant instead, showing he well-enough cares for the sake of EVE’s mission instead of his rocky relationship and pretends as if nothing had happened. WALL-E is very desiring and eager to know what it’s like to hold someone’s hands, so when he tries to reach for EVE, he is confused and hurt by EVE quickly pulling away or pushing his hand down and telling him to be quiet. He goes as far as to rehearsing how to hold EVE’s hand until he slumps down and admits he will never know how to, understanding how sometimes people are to busy to notice what or why you are trying to present to them. It is not easy to be able to make your dream come true, isn’t it? But when he is damaged by AUTO, he finds that instead of questioning about the plant or where the plant has gone, EVE is more concerned for him and is seen taking care of him and trying to bring him back to life. When EVE offers to hold WALL-E’s hand I’be e turn for protecting her, WALL-E instead pushes past and brings the plant to her wanting her to return it so he could be brought back to earth and repaired shortly afterwards. Even though WALL-E now understands that EVE is finally aligned to him and wants to share her love for him, he still understands the importance of how the convolution the plant from earth had put him through and why it was largely important than him, so he decided to put ahold on his dream and fulfill EVE’s most wanted desire, to take the plant to the holo-detector and return mankind to earth. Atta boy WALL-E, so pure hearted and well-meaning. Even if WALL-E doesn’t give a toss about EVE’s initial behavior upon him or the plant being more important to the earth, he is willing to put himself to save the plant from being destroyed and make sure EVE is happy so that she doesn’t stay mad at him for interfering with her mission. When WALL-E finds himself holding EVE’s hand at last, he grows more positive and is assured he’ll have a better future with EVE, M-O and the rest of his new friends on earth. After chasing the girl of his dreams through misfortune accidents, patronizing villains, obstacles in space, to almost being incapacitated in front of his beloved rescuer, he has learned to keep his relationship with EVE in the most pure-hearted, yet comedic way possible beyond his naivety. 4. WALL-E is willing to make friends with anyone he comes to contact with, but has trouble connecting with them. When meeting M-O, the latter became irritated by his filthy appearance and ordered him to keep his dirty treads off the scenery. In response he simply lurched his tread into M-O’s face. However when cleaning WALL-E, M-O decided it best to stay away from cleaning and shake WALL-E’s hand in the marks of friendship and mourned his death later on. WALL-E also taught Typ-E how to wave at oncoming visitors and Captain McCrea how to look at Earth’s future better. But when it comes to sinister people, WALL-E can get shy and very frightened of their presence, but is quick to act in his defensive style. When AUTO attempted to sized the plant, WALL-E stood his ground and slammed AUTO’s front with his chest door. 5. WALL-E can also be shown to be remorseful of his wrongdoings and sadness when he is hurt a lot, but he knows when EVE and others are there to help see him through his misjudgments and make him fells better.
EVE MAY HAVE HAD GRETA CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, but WALL-E CAME AS TO SECKDN ACT WITH HIS INITAL INNOCENT TO CONFIDENT PEROSNALITY.

I'm guessing with Auto, his programming forbids him from directly destroying the plant. That could be why he simply fires it out of the airlock. That may also explain why he doesn't go full Hal and effectively allows the captain opportunity to regain control.

13:43: WALL-E of course, might not have the simple comprehension of what the Axiom has when in a bewildered mishap and uncalled disturbances, but at least he has something to turn that down, his behavior. When WALL-E makes a mistake or is in a situation, he becomes anxious and weary and waits for something to happen or speaks up to EVE to change the tune. WALL-E only wanted to become closer to EVE so he would never feel lonely again, but to see her shunning his gestures creates his anxiety and tinge of resistance of having enough of being outcasted. Another thing to point out is that while, WALL-E can be naive to a serious task, he is willing to put himself or become a part of a situation that isn’t involving him. When he is nearly destroyed, he gives up his desire to hold EVE’s hand and love to wanting to take the plant to return humanity to earth first. WALL-E shows his growth where he becomes desperate and hopeful of being close to EVE to insisting and determined to finish her task when he sees how his curiosity puts him in risk of pain.

WALL-E is my favorite movie of all time. Or at least, last I check it is. When I first saw this movie I was obsessed with it, I watched it at least a dozen times within a week and several dozen within a month. I watched it back and forth, I watched all the extra features on the DVD, I listened to the commentary, I feel like I know everything there is to know about this movie I love it so much. It's hard to know where to even start when it comes to talking about this movie...
*incoming ramble/stream-of-consciousness, sorry for the wall of text)
So I guess I'll start with the whole environmental/unchecked capitalist thing. I feel like this is where it either loses some people or people seem to think that's what the movie is about. While I don't dislike this aspect at all, I don't really see it as a movie about any of that; it's all secondary stuff, if anything, compared to the main focus of the feature, which is a little robot making a friend (or love interest) with another robot. I feel pretty strongly about this because most of the movie is still told through WALL-E's perspective, and only deviates from that towards the end of the movie, when WALL-E is in danger and needs help. Not to mention, that's kind of the story Andrew Stanton wanted to tell; in most of the early drafts of the movie, humanity and what happened to them wasn't going to be addressed at all, mostly because Stanton genuinely did not care about that and just wanted to tell the story about the two robots. Indeed, the main inspiration for the movie was Stanton wanting to have the robots dancing with each other in space to classic music from the 30's into the 60's. You see this in how the movie uses Hello, Dolly! music and Louis Armstrong's rendition of "La Vie en rose". He also wanted it to be a completely silent movie, no talking whatsoever. Naturally, they ran into some problems with the implementations of all this, particularly how they were going to get WALL-E and EVE into space. Originally they were going to have gelatinous aliens who didn't talk but made weird noises pick them up, then the gelatinous aliens became what humans would eventually evolved into then just really obese humans, the the justification for why they look like that coming down to the ship's artificial gravity resulting in their bones getting smaller (which is actually true to science, I believe). How they decided to integrate the humans is fascinating too, particularly the captain. They tosses around ideas for how, symbolically, they wanted to show that he wad naive and coddled but turned more independent and reliable as the movie went on. One of the ideas was that he was going to wear his hat upside down until the moment he finally stood against AUTO, but that didn't completely read well, since while it's supposed to show he was indifferent to what happens on the AXIOM and so used to routine, it kind of make him look dumb, and the Captain, while he's clueless when it comes to doing anything outside of the routine he was taught, is not dumb. Instead they just had it so that he kind of wears his hat in a very lazy and sloppy way before pulling it down on his head and wearing it properly. Speaking of AUTO, I've seen a lot of people interpret him as being more villainous than he's portrayed, believing he wants to be in control of the AXIOM and his actions are a result of his lust for power and control. This is in contrast to Andrew Stanton's intention of what he wanted AUTO to represent: AUTO is the character who sticks to his "programming", and insist that everyone else, including the humans, stick to their "programming". He's meant to be the exact opposite of WALL-E, and what EVE (and everyone else) used to be before meeting WALL-E. I have to admit, I kind of lean more towards Stanton's interpretation, not only because I find it more believable that such an overtly robotic character would have a difficult time comprehending beyond what he was explicitly told by his creators, but also because this interpretation goes better with the themes of the movie, how WALL-E goes beyond his programming and thus is able to "live" more than the actual humans, who are just coasting through life looking at their screens being bored out of their minds with what to do. Then again, a lot of the robots were shown to have evolved beyond what they were programmed, so I don't blame people for interpreting it the other way, either. Going back to EVE, though, am I the only one who finds it weird that a robot who was designed to look and scan for flora/plants is so trigger happy with her plasma gun, one that I can only assume is used to remove debris or protect her in emergency situations? Like, it doesn't take much for EVE to bust out the thing and shoot. I get the feeling they mostly did this for comedic purposes and didn't look too deeply into why a probe droid would behave this way, but it still kind of perplexes me. The sound design was also a critical part of this movie, and it was cool to see they got Ben Burtt, the sound designer for Star Wars movies to do the sound for this movie, as well as WALL-E and M-O's voices. It was also a nice touch to have AUTO, the most robotic character in the movie, have a text-to-speech program do its voice. I suppose I should talk about the environmentalist/capitalist stuff, though I'm not sure what I could add. I find it interesting how they made the BnL CEO be more naively overly optimistic than outright evil. Sure he's still clearly motivated by profits, but the actor who played him, Fred Willard, has this affect to him that makes it feel like he sincerely hopes for the best, and seems genuinely distraught when he realized just how badly they screwed up. What else I find interesting is that this episode goes out of its way to prove that Earth is a resilient planet, we see a whole bunch of plants at the very end of the movie, show that despite how badly humans wrecked it, Earth will survive and move on, with or without them. The message doesn't so much come off as "we need to save the planet" so much as "we need to stop 'surviving' and star 'living'", as explicitly spelled out by the captain. In that sense, I feel like the green message is more of an afterthought than something that the movie was made to promote, like some people seem to think. It's also easy to look how the humans spend all their time looking at screens and go "ha ha look at how much people look at their phones and whatnot, they're so consumed with technology", but the way I interpret it, it's that the humans have been so coddled for centuries that they're taught to basically rely on their screens for everything, to the point where they don't even realize what features the ship has (i.e. a pool and a jogging track). What's important, is that human connection, experiencing things rather than "doing things", and as far as I'm concerned, you can do that with technology. Hell, it'd be difficult to have an anti-technology when it's the little ROBOT who's the one that encourages the humans to break from their mold. Lastly, about the ending. The murals were not originally part of the movie, they were added because test audiences kept assuming the worst when it came humanity's survival. I can kind of see why, the humans know nothing about how to take care of themselves, even the Captain is still a newbie when it comes to actually knowing anything about farming. The animated murals were added to convey to the audience that yes, humanity does get back on its feet and manage to survive back on Earth. Maybe it's a bit unrealistic, but the murals are so beautiful that I don't care. I especially love the final one of WALL-E and EVE looking at the gigantic tree that crew from that small sprout WALL-E found that kicked off the plot of this movie. Great stuff.
I really should stop it right there, even though there's still plenty I could talk about, like how much inspiration this movie took from silent films in the first third, how the animators and cinematographers had to work backwards in order to re-create the imperfections of old cameras to get the look and feel of things on Earth, how there was a furious back-and-forth between Stanton and the animators as to whether or not WALL-E should have elbows, how the decided to have live-action people in this movie specifically because they used clips form Hello, Dolly!, the deleted and alternate scenes when it comes to revealing that WALL-E survived and saved the plant, or how it was WALL-E that saved EVE in the AXIOM's garbage dump instead of the other way around, or how they wanted to have a more significant use of the lighter, or the thought-process that went into EVE fixing WALL-E back on Earth and how they needed that one extra "spark" to give it that extra oomph. God, there's just so much I can gush on about with this movie, I love it so much...

12:10 WALL-E didn’t break a lot of protocols, he just misinterpreted EVE’s care as torture attempt and so he broke free to save her, which may have caused a bit of confusion. But WALL-E didn’t get them into being labeled dangerous rogues, the friggin blind Stewards themselves had done it, besides would you be mad at the person who is held to blamed or the person with blind negotiation?! 6:09 “He barely learns anything.” I’m sorry, whaaaaaaaaaaa???!!!! 🤨 If I’m not mistaken, I can assure you that WALL-E had learned something. And also did you mention that EVE is the only one who gets strong character development, i'm at complete loss of words! ☹ Allow me to demonstrate. 5. WALL-E can also be shown to be remorseful of his wrongdoings and sadness when he is hurt a lot, because of his lack of experience and unsophisticated hobby that he can also feel that he is not wanted by society. However, he knows that EVE and others are there to help see him through his misjudgments and make him fells better.
EVE May have had great character development, but WALL-E came as to second act with his initial innocent to pure-hearted and brave personality..

This is going to sound crazy but…
How come EVE is gifted with the hero’s journey? All she does is scan around the area, shoot and ask questions later and then finally learns a humility lesson and repays WALL-E the favor. What people should note and haven’t is that WALL-E is gifted unlike anyone before him, he is the one with the most character development and teaches others to be more human. He goes from being naive, bumbling and cowardly to being calmer, braver, sensible and have some selflessness in him. Why don’t people view WALL-E as much as EVE? Huh?

I feel like this movie and the Good Dinosaur are good examples to play off of each other.
The Good Dinosaur is a very character driven movie with stunning environmental animation and depicts how an animal can still have human emotions and if it wasn't for some of the plot points being meh it would be a masterpiece.
Wall-e is a plot and character driven movie, it has a good balance and nothing doesn't make sense and the way it depicts how robots have emotions is masterful.
This statement can easily describe wall-e and Arlo.
He's in a new environment and has found something that is important to the plot, he meets some new people and has to overcome so many obstacles to achieve the ultimate goal of returning home.
Wall-e: Finds a plant, winds up on the Axium, he meets Eve and the captain etc.., nearly dies several times before Eve saves him and they achieve the goal of returning the humans home to Earth.
Arlo: Finds Spot, winds up lost in the wilderness, he meets the collector, the T-rex's etc... nearly dies several times before he lets spot go and achieves his goal of returning home to his family

I feel like The Good Dinosaur wanted to be WALL-E so very very badly. The two films definitely do share some DNA with its visual storytelling. Probably why I rank the film higher than a lot of people. WALL-E had it right, though, adding more world-building elements and a more structured second half. The Good Dinosaur got a little too minimalist for its own good.

I feel that Eve suffered the same issue Rapunzel did - Starts off strong but ultimately sacrifices herself/her goal for her lover, because the writers make this the way. Eve should have been the one to put the plant in the Axiom, as it was her mission to save Earth and restore humanity. She's awesome for that and didn't deserve her credit stolen, especially by a character as lovely as Wall-E - He doesn't deserve to be selected by the writers to steal her thunder (in the most well-meaning way). Rapunzel should have been the one to cut her hair at the end of Tangled, as it's far more dramatically and symbolically powerful. By having Flynn cut her hair, he's not only taking away her MAGIC power, but he's robbing Rapunzel of her chance of freeing herself from Mother GOTHEL'S power over her. It's almost as if Pixar is threatened by female power ... *whispers* Brave shouldn't have been 'Mother Bear'

    • @e-122psi3

Wasn't there a planned ending which was basically a role reversal; WALL-E saves EVE while EVE rescues the plant?
I do wonder how the film may have worked if they went for that, but at the same time I wonder if it would have been as powerful. While the want for goal-focused females in films in general is fair, WALL-E in particular is a romantic comedy. WALL-E has already proven he would literally go to the moon and back for EVE, it was her at this point that had to prove her love for WALL-E. To have her snub WALL-E for her quest the whole film and be validated for it would undermine the emotional core. I'm not sure what to say about Tangled since I haven't seen it all, though I suppose she was a damsel in distress in the original story, maybe they struggled to ditch that core.
Even besides that WALL-E I suppose is the underdog, a completely outdated model and bungling weirdo compared to the badass modern swiss army droid EVE, it made sense to vindicate him by having him save the main crisis, as formulaic as it may be. Can't just have him screw up and chase a hot girl the whole story either after all, especially since he's the main protagonist, not just EVE's comic relief guy.

    • @rmgilyard
      @rmgilyard Рік тому +1

It wasn’t just a romantic comedy, it was a sci-fi romantic film. Besides WALL-E’s role in saving the plant for EVE was a better decision for him understanding it’s importance for his journey. He fights for it, gets hurt for it and pays for it, like Flynn did for Rapunzel. It also demonstrates his character development from being naive and cowering to stepping in against AUTO and being insisting to wanting to take the plant instead of sharing his love for EVE.
