    I use my MBP mostly around the house, so I really like the fast charge capability afforded by the 140 W power adapter when used with the MagSafe adapter. That said, When I travel, I’ll probably just carry the smaller 96 W USB-C power adapter I have left over from the 2019 16 inch MBP I traded in to get my new 16 inch M1 Pro MBP.

    Thank you for this great review! Very helpful as I'm deciding between the 14 and 16 right now. I was intent on the 16 inch, but after watching this, I may go for the 14 inch as fan noise (if any) doesnt bother me much because I am usually working at my computer wearing noise canceling headphones. I also use external monitors along with an external keyboard and wireless mouse and hardly will be physically touching the Macbook itself on my desk, so the warmth of the machine wont be a big deal to me either.

    Very good and reasonable overall review. And I like your final purchase choice, too. The M1Max is strictly for super-power users. Ditto for the 16-inch. If a user plugs-into a high-quality external monitor for desktop docking and video editing or other heavy-duty workflows, the 14-inch should be more than enough machine. This is especially true for road warriors or at least people who want to carry their laptop to a variety of sitting locations (recliner, couch, conference rooms, etc.) and do not need a larger screen while away from the desk setup. But if the laptop display is most often going to be your primary display, or maybe you don't connect to an external monitor at all, the 16-inch is an extremely portable desktop computer replacement.
    AS FOR MAGSAFE: It depends on how you plan to use your machine. If you need the express-charging, MagSafe is the way to go. The unanswered question I have is how many aftermarket USB-C chargers are out there that can adequately power either of these laptops and still offer a super-portable form factor. If you're a road warrior and you want maximum charging and express charging, it's probably a good idea to buy more than one of Apple's extra-cost-option MagSafe power supplies and put one in your travel case and one in your home charging station.

    Great video, Jerry. You ended up exactly where I thought you should end up based on the use case you described. The question of 14 inch versus 16 inch is something I’ve been struggling with myself. I went into the thought process pretty set on the 14 inch model. It’s lighter. It’s smaller. It’s clearly easier to travel with. But it’s not easier to use if you were working with Lightroom or Photoshop or Premiere Pro. As I thought about this, I realized that when I use my current 13 inch laptop for these tasks, I don’t really take the work seriously. The laptop tides me over until I can get back to my workstation. But the 16 inch is actually large enough that if I had to work remotely for an extended period of time, I could do it. So, to my surprise, I ended up going with the 16 inch despite all of the size and weight advantages that come with the 14. Of course, everyone has their own use case. This is just mine.

      Great points. I don’t feel too restricted on the 14” though.

    • @Great_America
      @Great_America 2 роки тому +1

      Any ‘real’ productivity will require a much larger display. At that point, there are so many options today that you are not restricted to just using Apple displays. Most higher end monitors are now compliant with Apple’s DCI-P3 color space. I personally own the Asus PG32UQX 1500HDR 4k 32 inch monitor and love it. Whatever you decide, you can’t go wrong with either Apple MacBook Pro model.

    • @timothylinn
      @timothylinn 2 роки тому +1

      @@Great_America To be clear, I wasn't suggesting that either choice was bad. I was suggesting that there are tradeoffs, as Jerry pointed out, and that one fit me better than the other. Like you, I edit on a 30+" monitor (three, actually) so a 16" laptop screen isn't be my preference either when I have a choice. :-)

    • @timothylinn
      @timothylinn Рік тому

      @@HypraNT I've never once second guessed my choice, Demirkan. 95% of my use is at my desk where the larger 16-inch display works as an additional but not primary monitor. When I travel domestically by car or RV, it is no problem to take the laptop along plus an iPad Pro which I use as a second monitor. On a recent trip to India, which involved a bunch of flights and constant moving around, I left the laptop at home and carried an iPad Pro. The laptop definitely would have been a burden. That said, I wouldn't have taken a 14-inch either. (I've considered picking up a 13-inch MacBook Air to use specifically for air travel but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I keep hoping Apple will upgrade iPadOS to make it more useable with external storage.)

    Thanks for the detailed, ‘real life’ evaluation. Super helpful and well done. I still need to see/feel the 14” vs 16” to get a sense of what the portability difference is. Using the machine all day, a larger screen is going to be better. However, if the size/weight is really too much then the decision is made. My business applications won’t really see a difference between the CPU’s but I know that faster extends the longevity. As everyone, cost will be a factor only if I buy it vs my company. In any case, the ROÍ of the laptop in any configuration is so great, the price justification is negligible. (I’m much stingier if I pay, however).

    I am pro dev and I got the 14 max 32 ram, 1 tb, 24 core and I have never heard the fan and never find it warm. All this while pushing my code editor with about 8 Gb of ram and docker containers pushing 12 Gb of ram. It's like it's not even doing anything. The maximum swap memory I have been able to have it use is about 200 Mb. And I combine this with a 20000 mah powerbank and it gives me about 6 odd hours of power. So I start the day at 100% and end the day at 100% battery while working on a desktop grade machine remotely away from the desk. By the way I am in India and the ambient temperatures are higher and it really does not matter to these machines.

    I opted for 16 inch M1 Pro with 32 GB memory and 1 TB SSD. I really prefer the larger screen size and the slightly better cooling system. Weight/bulk isn’t much of an issue because I mostly use my MBP around the house (and did so even pre-pandemic). For travel, it fits nicely in my Sutter Slim Backpack from Waterfield Designs and does not feel overly heavy in that backpack, certainly not heavy enough to convince me to go with the smaller screen size and lighter weight of the 14 inch. I toyed with a larger SSD but opted to do my video editing off a fast SSD (Samsung T7 or SanDisk Extreme both in 1 TB size), leaving my internal SSD free for other uses. So far this has worked well but I’m not doing especially sophisticated video editing, sonI’m not pushing the speed envelope. YMMV.

I have a M1 MBA which I really only need for Office, Web, light video editing, etc. I'm very disinclined to upgrade due to the extra weight, cost and power (I don't really need). If YOUR workload was NOT professional and you were using it for these purposes - which would you choose, 13" MBP, 13" MBA, 14" or 16" MBP? Keep up great work. I hope you'll do a comparison between the m1s and the new MBPs. Happy Thanksgiving in advance.

      I think you've answered your own question, the 13" MBA seems like the right choice for you. 13" MBP is certainly not worth it. I would recommend two things, get 16gb RAM and consider if you want a bigger screen size, that's the only thing that might push you to 14" or 16" MBP's.

    I have a 16” configured like your 16”, and I’m keeping it, but as far as my everyday and professional applications, I’d also have been content with an M1 with 32 GB RAM, in a 15” or 16” MacBook Air, with 5G, focused on thinness and lightness. I need the bigger screen size more than the power. I love the ports of my machine and I use the power to play Cities: Skylines, which, frankly, this computer with M1 Max isn’t very good at through Rosetta, but the 16” MacBook Pro is the only laptop of its performance or greater that meets my noise criteria while gaming, and paired with its screen and speakers it’s the best gaming laptop by default (for Cities: Skylines, Factorio, streaming, and Apple Arcade). I have a desktop PC but I also work at that desk, so at the end of the workday, when sitting at my desk isn’t fun anymore, I turn to gaming on my iPad and M1 Max MacBook Pro, like an insane person. My iPhone and iPad both have unlimited data and my iPhone has substantial hotspot data, which should make game streaming to my laptop on the Amtrak generally possible. I’m sure I will quickly learn if hotspot LTE is not good enough for game streaming when I try it! If not, I’ll get a new iPhone 13 Pro Max for $400 (theoretically, with trade in and “don’t call it a contract”)

    I've watched a few videos that make the same point as you do regarding performance. Published specs (more CPU; more RAM) and bench tests are not backed up by performance which is orders of magnitude better. Not everyone needs processing power only for creative purposes (4/8k video; 3D; etc) - we need to process large amounts of data and formulae, and these new MBPs do not seem to substantially raise the bar in that respect. Disappointing, and my wallet will be staying shut until Apple and software developers (i.e. Microsoft) sort these processing bottlenecks.

    My first Apple product was the 17" MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo that I bought back in 2007. I LOVED the unit because the screen size was amazing for a lap top. Even though it weighed 6.8 lbs, I never was bothered by the weight. I kept using the unit until the software couldn't be upgraded. Over the past few years it was sitting in the garage but I recently turned the machine into a Linux system to play around.

    The 16' comes with a 140w watts charger while the 14' comes with either a 67w or a 96w.
    Apple must've raised the 16's power limit because it can handle the heat better due to it's larger chassis - or you can look at it the other way around and say you're getting a gimped version of the M1-max chip in the 14'.

      @@juanmillaruelo7647 I don't think so. M2 will probably have slower SSDs (on pair with M1, but certainly slower than M1 Pro/Max), only one TB4 controller for all ports, it will be capped on GPU - therefore, 32 GB will be available option, albeit expensive one. There's space to accomodate users. But Apple being Apple - there's also space for 15" MacBook Air......

    Good laptops for video content production. In general, I think they are a bit oversized for office work or media consumption and therefore not the right choice for about 99% of the people. The only other reason to buy those is the prestige. A bit like driving a Merc.

    I’m looking into getting involved with Xcode & other dev projects, will I really benefit from 32gb ram vs 16? Lots of others across the internet say 16 is fine while others say get 32. Not sure what to get.

      If you will be a serious dev and you still have the laptop for 5 years I would hold out for 32gb just in case. Other wise go cheaper and plan to upgrade if needed in 1-2 years.

      I'm in a similar situation. I chose to 32 GB but some aspects of software dev me second guess wether I stood go with 64 GB's instead.

      @ I've been told by a number of people that 64gb would be overkill for software development. I've seen a bunch of videos out showing xcode and android studio running simultaneously on a 16gb machine using reasonable amounts of swap space. So I am leaning towards 32gb being enough

    I agree that the regular M1 should have 32 GB RAM as an option. Most people need the more RAM but not the extra CPU/GPU power that comes from M1 Pro and M1 Max. Really hope they bring that on the next M2 products. However, some would say that the way unified memory and swap memory works, that's not really necessary etc but I still would love to see the M2 with 32GB RAM.

      There is something that just causes some hesitations on the M1, all of my M1 machines, that I just dont feel on my 27" iMac. On paper it shouldnt make any sense but just in using with my daily stuff and apps, sometimes the M1 just feels like it is catching up. I am hoping it is ram.

      Amen! THough I'm afraid that regular Mx won't get multiple display support and 32 GB of RAM until 3rd or 4th generation.

    I dont' understand why you would order the M1 Pro over the M1 Max when you are configuring with 32Gb memory, since there is only CA$200 difference between the two. Is marginally lower heat and more battery life more important than significant performance gain, or am I missing something?

    • @element4element4
      @element4element4 2 роки тому +3

      You have to do very GPU intensive work to see any performance gain. If you never do that, 200 dollars less and more battery is worth more than unused extra GPU power.

      I think it comes down to battery life and heat for me I don’t beee the GPU for what I do even with $200. For resale I think there will be others with the same thoughts.

      If you don't need GPU and you keep the binned 14 core GPU with your 32GB memory, even more reason to save $350 by avoiding the max
