@@ionutmititelu2083 the main reason why I moved back to the Air (M2 in my case) was because I really didn’t like the bulk of the 14” pro. Even the battery life of the M2 Air is better than the 14”. I loved your video. I actually am torn between the 14 inch MacBook Pro max and the 16 inch MacBook Pro. I was planning on getting 32 gig of RAM like you mentioned so that does kind of lean me towards the max but I do love the real estate as you mentioned and I do intend to be traveling, doing video work in the future. Decisions, decisions, decisions.
Why would you spend $400 on an upgrade that will give you marginally better results? By the time 16GB is not enough, it will be time to buy a new Macbook and 32GB will be the standard of the lowest model and you'll have an extra $400 in your pocket that can go towards your new Macbook. It's honestly an upgrade that makes no sense for most people.
I'll counter with the situation where you're constantly running out of memory and needing to reload apps, and would give a left toe to alleviate you of that frustration. Peace of mind, was worth it to me to load it up on ram.
If you watch any UA-cam video that compares the side by side 16 vs 32gb, that basically never happens even if you were to load up 1000 chrome tabs. And there is no speed difference at all except in very rare circumstances that most people will never be able to achieve.
@@iGhostr the only way you would know if the RAM made any difference in speed is if you do a side by side comparison. It has already been tested on UA-cam if you search 16gb vs. 32gb. In 99% of cases, the extra RAM makes no difference. Even if you have 20 chrome tabs open with videos playing in the background.
Very good video. I went through a lot of this thinking when going for the M1 Pro 14". I ended on that because I could not accept the 8gb and 256 gb in the 2020s. I'm very thankful I did, because to my usage it's still performing like a dream. I could see the same thing happen on a larger scale if you're a media creator with lots of high resolution work flows like you eloquently explained in this video. Personally I am still satisfied with my computer. The screen, speakers, ports and microphone are very good. You didn't mention the microphone, but it's a very usable "studio mic".
I was at the same spot the past months. I got the 16" M1 Pro MBP in early 2022. In January of this year, I started to get back into programming, and it was nagging at me. I saw them in the refurbished store and this weekend I had a friend tell me he wanted to purchase a 16" MacBook Pro but did not have the money to spent CAD $3200, and so we started talking about mine. I write mine off in about 24 - 28 months so that I have some to spare in the run-up to the third full year. It made sense to sell him mine. Sold it to him, and he picked it up today. I turned around and ordered the 14" MAX 32Gb, as in the refurbished store we don't get to specify the upgrades as in the normal store. I need the 32Gb, the rest if gravy. For a brief moment I considered the 15" and even looked at the 16" again, but the refurbished store just did not have the right systems. I paid for rush shipping, and it could be here as early as tomorrow.
Waiting for mine in the Mail. I’m 16 and I’m starting vg1 (Norwegian high school) I’m gonna be doing a lot of design and that kinda stuff. I thought I could just buy a normal pc for way less but I talked to my cousin who said I HAVE to get a MacBook (she went to the same course) because there are problems with using anything other then Mac. I could not figure it out as to why, I asked a few workers at the tech store and they couldn’t figure it out either, but I trust her. Now I’m just kinda browsing videos like this, great review!
The difference between the M2 screen and the M1 one is actually pretty big! i upgraded for this reason (and some added speed). The old one hadd a 40ms GtG time, so like 25 fps. The new one I haven't seen any measurements of, but the difference is clearly visible when scrolling websites or anything else!
Hey, I initially placed an order for a 15 inch MacBook Air M2 with 16Ram and one terabyte…. But then realized for a couple hundred dollars more I can just get the M2 14 inch MacBook Pro. Or just get 512GB SSD 14 Pro for a decent price. My only gripe is I usually don’t connect to an external display and was wondering if 14 inches is big enough because I really don’t want to spend so much money on the 16 inch pro. Apple really needs to release an affordable external monitor that doesn’t cost $1500.
I still run my 2017 MacBook Pro (mid spec) and it still does everything I want. I don't do video encoding, just office stuff and some light coding. I did upgrade my iPhone to a 15 Max recently though. Most of my work happens on my intel machine. Which is a Surface Pro 9 (mid spec) and I love it. Hooked up to honking external monitor, I'm king of the universe.
For what I do, the M1 MBA is perfect and I love it. But sitting on the balcony, I wish the display could be brighter than 400 nits. The 14 M2 Pro has the ability to 1.600 nits (imitate HDR). That’s amazing. I would like to have this too.
Great Video .. Just ordered a M2 MacBook Pro Max 64GB 2TB.. a lot of money and just trying to justify the purchase in my mind. My Laptop is currently a 2012 MacBook Pro the last upgradable one and my desktop is the 2013 Mac Pro Trash can.. not so much upgradable. (video cards) but it is time to move on.. My first Mac was a 2012 MacBook Air with only 4gb .. always regretted not gettin 8gb .. but still have that one too.. LOL..
Now that you've had the 15" MBA for two weeks, do you feel any differently about the 14" MBP? In that new video, you sound really excited about the 15" MBA. Of course, there's a very specific audience for whom the power of the MBP is quite important, and they are probably most of the folks watching this very thoughtfully done and informative video. But then there's another category of folks, who don't really need the power of the MBP but do need 16gb RAM and 512gb SSD and want a screen bigger than 13". Configured like this, the 15" MBA is $1700, just $300 less than base model 14" MBP which has the same amount of RAM and SSD. The real-world price gap is usually smaller, because the base 14" is often available for $1750 or thereabouts. Judging by this video and your just-released 2-week 15" MBA video, it's hard to tell which Macbook you're more excited about, or which you think would be better for someone in this category. Happy to be your newest subscriber! (at least for a few seconds until someone else subscribes ;)
For anyone, I would seriously suggest to rethink about getting MBA with passive cooling. I had M1 MBA with hopes that it would perform as advertised. It did, until throttling started.
16 Gb ram 512gb storage is fine for most, don't try to future proof since there were powerful Mac's from the past that can run current OS but are not supported now simply because new tech or chip architecture will change and make things obsolete quickly.
yo, how did you get that super super smooth b-roll at 10:00? I'm not much of a videographer but my first instinct was to say that is a render and the camera was entirely digital. but I noticed a tiny jitter in some of the other b-roll earlier, so... is it just super high res camera that's been stabilized in post? For some reason that caught my attention. leaving a comment for the algorithm. video looks good and audio is good. I hope you find the success in this increasingly tight tech reviewer realm, earned a sub from me anyway.
I got to use my friends spec'd out M1max 64gb ram and 8tb storage. I was trying to KILL this damn thing and it did not phase it at all. Whereas with my HP laptop all I have to do is THINK about opening my DAW and it'll run the fans louder than a 747. This is coming from someone who is a lifelong windows user. Yep, Apple really is the future.
I think 16gb is enough for 99% of people, but that is limited to Mac, windows I’d suggest way more. But the fact that people have gone from high end specs to m1 base air model and that could keep up on 8gb of ram. 16gb on M1 Pro and up is perfect
Thanks for the honest review. My personal rule of thumb is to always over-spec any new computer I buy. If nothing else to cover higher cpu requirements for future updates of apps you are using right now. Within reason though, I would never go for 64gb 8TB M2 Max even if I could buy one. No way I would ever come close to needing that much power and storage.
i love when people are somewhat disappointed with laptop audio, as compared to a dedicated audiophile-worthy bespoke stereo system... like, you are forever limited by the physics of having a couple of small speakers in a narrow band. it's amazing that they sound as good as they do, but if you want true fidelity, invest in some headphones or decent external speakers. this is always a non-talking point for me.
Nice vid. I literally just picked up the 14” pro, (passed the 2019 13” pro to family).. really like it a lot! I do actually miss the Touch Bar though. If the 14” pro comes out with a Touch Bar, I’ll likely sell this one and get it
Honestly Tarren, I highly doubt the RAM bottlenecked you in anyway based on how you claim to use it and it really is just your perception of using a laptop that has a better CPU that you noticed any boost in performance. There are very few cases where more RAM makes any difference in speed as shown by tests done various UA-camrs online. Even if you open a million chrome tabs, have videos playing in the background, exporting multiple files in lightroom, it makes no difference to the speed. There are only very specific use cases where it does make a difference and yours is not one of them.
I wish you said that Apple sent you the computers earlier in the video… This is not a review, it’s a sale pitch, even if the computer is truly a marvel.
yes i completely agree...the more RAM you can afford...the better. i also learned the hard way spending the extra $2k now just to get that extra 32 gb RAM. Storage not so much as you can easily use an external SSD.
I got the m2 pro 12/19 core with 16gb ram and 1tb storage and so far it is the best thing ever. I’m able to use a parallels windows virtual machine together with OS Ventura with lots of coding and office applications open. For me the 16gb ram is enough so far.
My iPhone, iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, and iMac are all not growing with me - and they’re all packed to the brim, maxed out for storage. I’m sitting here like WTH do I do now?
Debating if this is worth the upgrade from the 13” regular m1. Interested in the 14” really would love to get rid of dongles. Just debating if the speed is worth the upgrade. I also do video and photo.
I purchased M2 Mac Book pro with 1 TB of storage. its a very well built machine, my only issue is I did not up grade the Unified memory. I now fell later down the line, I may have problems with the 16g of ram. Due to financial restrictions i was not able to purchase the 14 Inch mac to 32 Ram.
Great video! You convinced me to get it after debating between the Pro and M2 Air. I wanted to ask what sleeve/stand are you using for the laptop in the video?
#imadeit I just got the M2 pro 14 inch with base M2 chip and 32 GB RAM, 512 GB storage. I went with more ram over a chip or storage upgrade because I think that’s best for future proofing. Storage is generally better external anyways, since you’ll want to back things up too. For your M1, what is the battery capacity at after 2 years? I ask because I have warranty extension on my MacBook for 2 years vs 1 and it would be nice to get a replacement battery at the 2 year mark.
I think the mistake was that you were using your MacBook as a workstation most of the time it seems. If you didn't know that, then you made the right choice with the M1 Pro spec. If you knew that you would use the M1 Pro as mostly a workstation, then you definitely should have spec'd higher. Or even get a Mac Studio.
Well done - what an insight. Just about to do the purchase but your computer needs are far greater than mine - i.e. more than I will ever be. I am persuaded to the Macbook Pro 14" M2 Pro 10C CPU 16C GPU 16/512GB for basically 365/photos etc. Australian wall papers are good too e.g. Larapinta
I've got a spec'd out 16.2" M1 Max with 64 GB RAM but opted 512gb SSD coz I have like a bazzilion 1-2TB external SSD's for all my video editing off of them. Never really use more than 200GB on my internal SSD.. Although I see myself getting a 1 or 2 TB ssd next time I upgrade, in like 4 years minimum.
Great video. You spoke a lot about content creation. What about people who have an office job and use power point, excel and outlook for a living, is this computer overkill???
I found the NEW base M2 pro for €200 more than the refurbished m1 pro 8-core and the same price of 10-core (a bargain!). I was coming from an intel 2017, so I had to choose between m1 pro and m2 pro. I was initially influenced by the various negative reviews, then I realized that which made no sense to me. The slower SSD compared to the previous model is not a tragedy, both because it is still very fast and responsive, and because the faster speed of the previous model would ONLY be noticed if you transferring a very huge amounts of data to an external SSD (or from an external SSD) that is faster than the internal SSD... which NEVER happens! On the other hand, performances has definitely improved. I did a final cut export test using m1 pro 14" 10 core and m2 14" 10 core. One hour and 36 minutes of video, 4K prores: masks and various effects applied (filmconvert, luts...). Export completed about 40 minutes with m1 pro (very good result) and 26 minutes with m2 pro (amazing result)! Honestly, I don't know why this huge difference, but this was the result (maybe they improved the performance of the m2 chip even more with the updates?). For me nothing else is needed. The rest is just the bulls**t.
do you find that you get more eye strain if you use the 14 inch for too long, as opposed to the 16 inch? This is my concern for extended work sessions.
I’ve always heard the 16 gb RAM and 512 Mac performs super well even for heavy tasks (which for me is LR and photoshop) What would the 2TB 32Gb ram version cost ? Like 3500 bucks? I don’t have that kind of money and I’ve never heard those specs are really necessary from anyone else.
I have a good custom PC with i7 12 Gen, RTX 3050 8gb, and 32gb ram. I’m a freelance photographer and videographer and I generally use this setup to edit videos and photos. I’m looking for a laptop that I can take for shoots and work while I’m travelling. I need a laptop as of now but I guess I can try to stretch my need of laptop till the end of this year. I’m saving money to get the M3 Pro MacBook Pro 14’’ with the 11 core CPU, 36gb Ram and 1 TB SSD and I’m thinking of selling my PC for this laptop Is it worth it? Now I have 4 option 1. Sell my PC setup and completely switch to a good variant of MacBook 2. Get the M3 MacBook Pro with 16/32 gb ram and 1tb SSD and keep my PC as well 3. Buy a good windows laptops and keep my PC 4. Save more money for the M4 Pro. Note:- 1. Old brand new MacBooks are the same price as the newer 2. I don’t trust refurbished or second hand laptops in my country If anyone has any configuration suggestions please reply or any other advice Thank you 😊
I am looking for a new macbook pro and am confused between 2 models 1) Macbook pro m2 pro 14 inches with 10 core CPU, 16 core GPU, 16gb RAM and 512gb SSD 2) Macbook pro m1 pro 16 inches with 10 core CPU, 16 core GPU, 16gb RAM and 1TB SSD Should I go for the latest chip in the market or a previous version that gives me better speakers, battery, screen and double storage?
Not sure if you made your decision by now but I would go for the 16" just because the ssd is actually faster than the base m2 pro's model. The power difference shouldn't be too big and you also get more storage.
@andy5434 Agreed, but with the caveat that if portability is a factor, the 14" MBP makes much more sense than a 16" model. I'm not a wimp, but the 16" MBP is considerably heavier and more cumbersome.
@@sharkfintech5893 Yeah honestly the 16” is pretty heavy. Problem is, where I’m from the 16” was only $150 more than the 14” if they were similarly specced. So I went with the 16” because I feel like it was the better value. Idk maybe the battery life and performance difference isn’t that big between the two so maybe in the future I might consider going with the 14” since it is a lot more portable.

@@blackmamba6938because you are not doing any work lmfao 😂😂😂
@@iGhostr the only way you would know if the RAM made any difference in speed is if you do a side by side comparison. It has already been tested on UA-cam if you search 16gb vs. 32gb. In 99% of cases, the extra RAM makes no difference. Even if you have 20 chrome tabs open with videos playing in the background.
Terren, you've got such a lovely personality - and your videos are stellar. Keep it up.
Thanks so much!
So good when you find exactly the video you need to answer all the questions you have! Ordering the exact configuration of your mac. Thank you!!
I paid for rush shipping, and it could be here as early as tomorrow.
are you happy to switch to 14" or do you regret it?
Glad i went w my 16” M2 pro 32GB and 4TB . Wont have to worry about anything .
Really excellent review. I have used the 14 in for the last few months and agree with every point you made.
Awesome! thanks for watching :)
I would like to have this too.
i made it :) Just bought an m2 pro macbook pro 16 inch and this helped. Thank you :)
LOL..
how is it
The color grading of this video is amazing
Thank you! 😊
Silver gang!🎉
I’ve always thought silver looked WAY better than Space Gray on macs. Can’t wait to upgrade from my ‘19 16” MBP
It did, until throttling started.
i am returning my MBA 15. it’s too big, and with the sales on MBP right now, i got a M2 MBP 14 for great value
16 Gb ram 512gb storage is fine for most, don't try to future proof since there were powerful Mac's from the past that can run current OS but are not supported now simply because new tech or chip architecture will change and make things obsolete quickly.
This video has crazy good lighting/color grading.
Haha thanks man!! I’ve been really working on that, so means a lot you noticed :)
Great vid! Thank you. Beautiful wallpapers, I had to get the Euphoria pack. Super incredible.
Loved the video! Still undecided but very informative
I made it (better late than never), love your vibe and content and I'm making it through your older stuff first.
Thanks for this real life review
My pleasure 😊
Great, thorough, practical, useful review. OK, I'll buy one !
I light space grey because it's so classic, it looks like the original MacBook Air.
agreed
yo, how did you get that super super smooth b-roll at 10:00?
The cost of 8TB you can get multiple Macs
@@JaimeJMarrero lol indeed it can
how much storage would you go with if you were buying today?
@@faithhouse6111 I think 1 TB is the safest, but really comes down to what you need locally without cloud storage. Lots of apps are cloud based
I'm still on Intel (yeah, I know 😅) and my pro isn't cutting it anymore for my coding work. The min spec M2 pro with 32GB of ram looks perfect!
Yeah that'd be a huge upgrade for you!
this is the only video that showed specs, thank you!
i love when people are somewhat disappointed with laptop audio, as compared to a dedicated audiophile-worthy bespoke stereo system... like, you are forever limited by the physics of having a couple of small speakers in a narrow band. it's amazing that they sound as good as they do, but if you want true fidelity, invest in some headphones or decent external speakers. this is always a non-talking point for me.
Ipad pro macbook pro and even mb air have amazing speakers.
Nice vid. I literally just picked up the 14” pro, (passed the 2019 13” pro to family).. really like it a lot! I do actually miss the Touch Bar though. If the 14” pro comes out with a Touch Bar, I’ll likely sell this one and get it
Love your video quality. That's extraordinary 🤩
Best review I've encountered on Macbooks!
Great review! I sill don't think I need to upgrade from my 14" M1 Macbook Pro, but I always follow.
I like your delivery!
Great info.. and honest review ☺
Great video. Congrats!
I wish you said that Apple sent you the computers earlier in the video… This is not a review, it’s a sale pitch, even if the computer is truly a marvel.
Apple sends review units to all notable journalists, technology reviewers, etc. They do not in any way influence my opinion shared on this video.
Thanks for the great review! Ordering my 14" M2 Pro today! Where did you get the Sleeve with integrated stand (1:50)? Looks awesome!
Who gives notch on Laptop screen? What is the meaning of 14 inch screen then?
Kind of just stumbled here. Someone from Toronto that looks like me. Subscribed! Great quality too!
yes i completely agree...the more RAM you can afford...the better. i also learned the hard way spending the extra $2k now just to get that extra 32 gb RAM.
Same here with the same model.
Do you think that 16GB would be good for a college student
@@liamhadley2245 Yes, more than enough for just college work.
would this be good with games such as WoW?
love the video keep it up buds
My iPhone, iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, and iMac are all not growing with me - and they’re all packed to the brim, maxed out for storage. I’m sitting here like WTH do I do now?
Great Review👌Do you still think today 21june 2024 , that the m2 is a better choice for video editing? Thanks in advance for any advice!
Debating if this is worth the upgrade from the 13” regular m1. Interested in the 14” really would love to get rid of dongles. Just debating if the speed is worth the upgrade. I also do video and photo.
Great review. I was just wondering what case/sleeve are you using with your MacBook Pro?
What's the sleeve with built-in stand you're using?
ua-cam.com/video/GXcSvz4bD68/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
I ask because I have warranty extension on my MacBook for 2 years vs 1 and it would be nice to get a replacement battery at the 2 year mark.
that 512 will be filled up anyway when you install a lot of apps.
Excellent detailed review. Thanks!
I made it!!
Great Review🙌🏾
Thank you 😊
Well done - what an insight. Larapinta
I'll always choose silver Macs despite the hype of space grey.
Maybe time for me to upgrade from my late 2013 macbook pro.
Great video. You spoke a lot about content creation. What about people who have an office job and use power point, excel and outlook for a living, is this computer overkill???
Yes it is an overkill.. for you, a good Lenovo Legion 5 series laptop for 800 dollars will be more than enough..
The notch isnt bad its just annoying because there is absolutely no reason for it if theres no face id built into it
I am wondering about the laptop bag. Would you mind sharing the buying link for the sleeve?
ua-cam.com/video/GXcSvz4bD68/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
I agree 100%
Thanks for covering using it outside. I just bought one. I didn't upgrade the ram.. Argh !! I did get a terabyte drive though !!
Loved this video. I noticed a clock widget on your desktop - which app is it? I am obsessed with clocks !!
If you had to choose upgrading the cpu or add more memory, which would you choose? I do light coding and visualizations.
get a macbook air m1 and save money
I made it. I am a new subscriber for life you are the man.
Awesome! Thank you! :)
Just get external storage no issue here 4k edits
do you find that you get more eye strain if you use the 14 inch for too long, as opposed to the 16 inch? This is my concern for extended work sessions.
No i don’t tbh! It’s been great :)
I’ve always heard the 16 gb RAM and 512 Mac performs super well even for heavy tasks (which for me is LR and photoshop)
What would the 2TB 32Gb ram version cost ? Like 3500 bucks?
I don’t have that kind of money and I’ve never heard those specs are really necessary from anyone else.
I have a good custom PC with i7 12 Gen, RTX 3050 8gb, and 32gb ram.
I’m a freelance photographer and videographer and I generally use this setup to edit videos and photos. I’m looking for a laptop that I can take for shoots and work while I’m travelling. I need a laptop as of now but I guess I can try to stretch my need of laptop till the end of this year.
I’m saving money to get the M3 Pro MacBook Pro 14’’ with the 11 core CPU, 36gb Ram and 1 TB SSD and I’m thinking of selling my PC for this laptop
Is it worth it?
Now I have 4 option
1. Sell my PC setup and completely switch to a good variant of MacBook
2. Get the M3 MacBook Pro with 16/32 gb ram and 1tb SSD and keep my PC as well
3. Buy a good windows laptops and keep my PC
4. Save more money for the M4 Pro.
Note:-
1. Old brand new MacBooks are the same price as the newer
2. I don’t trust refurbished or second hand laptops in my country
If anyone has any configuration suggestions please reply or any other advice
Thank you 😊
I would be interested in an honest comparison of SSD file transfer speeds, and from external TB4
I made it! Great video!
I am looking for a new macbook pro and am confused between 2 models
1) Macbook pro m2 pro 14 inches with 10 core CPU, 16 core GPU, 16gb RAM and 512gb SSD
2) Macbook pro m1 pro 16 inches with 10 core CPU, 16 core GPU, 16gb RAM and 1TB SSD
Should I go for the latest chip in the
market or a previous version that gives me better speakers, battery, screen and double storage?
Thanks for video! What case do you use? Could you share the link or manufacturer?

No. Some of us want a bigger display everytime we open that sh** 😂
What about external memory wouldn’t that be an advantage for you?
How is the matte finish on the keys holding up? My 2021 14" is already more worn than my 2015 15" Retina. Both are daily drivers and I write code so I do type a lot... Just wondering if it's certain models or they improved the keys on the M2 models...

I bought the 14 M2 Pro refurbished with 16gb RAM but as a professional video editor and producer the ram worried me (and you’ve confirmed that here, thank you). So I bit the bullet and upgraded to a refurbished 14 M2 Max 32gb ram. If you’re buying consider this:
New 14 M2 Pro 1TB 32gb RAM = $3,101
Refurbished 14 M2 Max 1TB 32gb RAM = $2,821
