      I'll join the chat.... I have an M1 Max 64GB and 4TB drive. The difference in price form 32GB to 64GB was $100 so why not. Thoughts after 2 months, 32GB is more than enough ram. for my Photoshop app and Dreamweaver coding. I notice I use about 20GB of RAM with every app open and thunderbird email, with another 20GB in cache (which the computer will use if its there) . The only issue I had is when I transferred over Apple Photos from migration and it doesn't work as well, images are blurry for a bit then they get crisp (670GB of photos/videos) the machine I transferred them from are ok. I can not speak of the M3 Max MBP - But from what I hear and see Im losing perhaps 7 seconds on initial bootup and maybe 5 seconds on launching an app. BUT, I just put my machine to SLEEP so I don't reboot it often. More RAM = less HHD usage since the software can utilize all the ram available. I think it was a super buy at half off. saving $2000 is worth the couple of seconds of boot and app load time. Lastly, for video it has the FASTEST 400GB of buss speed, the M3 MAx has 150GB or 200GB?

    There is no way or reason to replace my M1 Max, 64GB of RAM, 32 Core GPU, 4 TB SSD, for any M2 Max or M3 Max. As well as the M3 performs, the M1 Max is a fantastic Mac, with Blazing Performance and Incredible Battery Life. I have 3 years of Apple Care+, and My M1 Max is going to be one year old on Christmas 2023, I cannot justify an upgrade, but it will be great for those with Intel Mac Book Pros.

      On Friday, my new-in-box M1 Max 64Gb 2Tb MBP (with Apple Care+) should arrive! I’m super excited. This video and your comment help me feel like it was a good decision.
      I’m upgrading from a 2020 HP Envy 15 Intel i7 32Gb 1Tb Nvidia RTX 2060 creator-focused laptop. Recent random BSOD (probably from too many chrome windows and tabs) caused me to look.
      I suspect the release of the M3 chips and Black Friday led to the $1800 in savings on my transaction. Controlling for taxes & accident protection it wasn’t that much more expensive than my 2020 HP-and the MBP will have 2x the RAM & storage.

    For the resale value of the M1 max and how minuscule the differences are, it's not at all logical to make the upgrade unless you really need 3 extra seconds of free time in your life. It's really just marketing and FOMO.

    My 16" M1 Max runs amazingly well. It never gets in the way of me making anything. Unless I rendered multiple videos a day, it doesn't seem worth an upgrade. Especially since most software isn't fully optimized for the new GPU architecture. The extra UI snappiness seems minimal, and you'd never notice it unless you compare side by side.

    Found a deal on the M1 Max 16" MBP (10c/32c/32GB/1TB) sealed, brand new for $1800 at my campus store. Should I go for it? I'm using M2 15" MBA for everyday carry and am looking for a workstation at a reasonable price. There's also M2 Max 16" MBP (12c/38c/32GB/1TB) sealed, brand new for $2500, but does the M2 Max justify $700 extra over the M1 Max?

    • @xyrendor
      @xyrendor Рік тому +2

      IMO, unless you are struggling to run things right now with your M2 15”, I would stick with it. In the case you feel like you do have to upgrade, go for that M1 Max, the upgrade is not worth 700. The M1 Max is still a crazy relevant machine, and a lot of UA-camrs seem to be making too big of a deal about M1, M2, M3. Apple’s target audience right now is not any of the M1 or M2 users but the leftover Intel users. If you feel like that M2 is underperforming for what you need it to do, upgrade if you feel like it, M2 15” should last several year without need for upgrades.

    The one thing that would make me consider upgrading my M1 Pro to an M3 Pro is, as you highlighted, to benefit from the better residuals on a trade in.

    • @jeradtech
      @jeradtech  Рік тому +2

      @@jeradtech The tension is real. But I'm not sure it's enough of a reason to upgrade. Some YT'rs will say that the accumulation of all these microseconds means more productivity, but we aren't machines. If that were the case, we'd have to measure coffee breaks, toilet breaks, distraction breaks etc.
      Mail opening in 4 seconds vs 2 seconds probably doesn't make me more productive.

    I have the 2021 16”MBP M1 Pro (16GB RAM/1TB SSD) and I mainly use it for video editing on Final Cut Pro X. However, when I use lots of plugins on a 1080p animation, FCPX will sometimes crash. So, I ordered the M3 Max MBP (64GB RAM/2TB SSD) to give it a try. As expected, I experienced absolutely great performance with the M3 Max and no crashes- I’m assuming, because of the greater RAM. But, I just couldn’t justify the price, so I returned it. A month later, I ordered a refurbished M2 Max MBP (64GB RAM/2TB SSD) and experienced the same great results as the M3 Max, but at $1000 cheaper. Still, I wished there was just a way to add extra RAM to my M1 Pro device and still found the M2 Max as being too expensive and sent it back to Apple. So, I decided to just suck it up with my M1 Pro, because Apple is likely going to stop offering OS upgrades in the very near future, rendering my plugins useless. If that happens, I’ll consider switching to a PC for video editing.

      yeah you're right I think, but that 16 gb ram is a bummer in my video and music productions. I know it will be faster like in this video the M1 Max was64 gb so of course its super future proofed. And then as the reviewer mentioned my exchange is 1055 from Apple. So if I want to future proof my machine for like 5 to 8 years, this is the way to go. Just my balancing all things given, but probably others would wait. I also want to push the limits with my audio and video production in after effects which barely takes my apple pro res raw files. So yeah adobe is a hog and for that reason alone you need the MAX M3 128 gb.@@crunchchannel8788

    helpful vid, thanks m8. my M1 Max has chewed thru a LOT of media, and highly impacted my workflow for the better. only regret I'm having with it is being at 32gb ram. Been kicking myself last several months for not going with the 64gb; esp since upgrading to Sonoma, a lot of the responsiveness when I'm in high-output mode had gotten muddy with this laptop, results in a lot of software or system reboots etc. Overall, I think one of the biggest weakpoints of the M-system is memory allocation and vram swap - I think they're still working out the kinks, and esp with adobe software, the memory usage gets pretty messy at times when multitasking.
    tbh, I'd be more inclined to upgrade to M1 Max 64gb on the cheap before going with similar M2 or M3; or ofc, double down on budget and get the 128gb and completely eliminate the memory issue lol.

    which one is better: a macbook m1 64gb with 2T ssd or a macbook m1 max 96gb with 1T?

    • @jeradtech
      @jeradtech  9 місяців тому

      Depends. If you don't need the extra RAM I would go with the extra storage space. Both are not user upgradable and it's pretty easy to use up 1TB of storage.

    Thanks for your video comparison.......
    Measuring the temperatures on an M1Max that has been working for at least 2 years and a new M3 does not find reliable values because the thermal paste coupling between the heatsink and CPU/GPU and accumulated dust can alter the temperature results.
    Another important thing is that Apple sets the fans to operate at high temperatures, when the M1 can go into thermal protection, reducing overall performance; So setting a useful app like MacFanControl can make sure to avoid high temperatures and push M1/3 to maximum continuously. I would also like to point out that the 14" MacBookPro M1Max cannot push performance to the maximum in "battery" mode, Apple's statement, not mine obviously.
    In any case, big differences

    The reason they perform the same is because Apple has put the same encoding hardware in all of them, the performance of the M3 is only noticeable when you do other than video editing. For example, 3D work, VFX and Gaming.

    My M1 Max Used to boot up very fast too. Now it became very sluggish, it got slower with time. I think more fair if restart both M3 Max and M1 Max where they both are mint condition unused.

    You just helped me cancel my sell on “It’s Worth More.” Basically, what’s going on is not that the M3 is not powerful, the software has still not caught up to the performance of these machines. You really don’t need anything more than a decently spec’d M1.

    M1 Max loaded is half the price for similar performance. Not worth it

    Interesting apple use the m1 to compare to rather than the m2 which suggests the m3 isn’t much better than the m2 so they needed to make the figures look better? That’s like comparing the iPhone 15 pro max to the 13 lol it’s just never done it’s always compared to the model before

    Coming from a Windows PC, I recently got the 14'' M1 Max MacBook Pro with 64Gb RAM and 32Gb GPU. While it is overall a nice machine, the performance so far has been underwhelming for me, to say the least. I'm editing 4K H.265 4.2.0 footage in Adobe Premiere. Timeline performance becomes a bit choppy as soon as there are two clips, on top of each other. Export times of the m1 max are also underwhelming, lacking behind my old 9th generation i9 intel PC with NVidia 1080ti GPU (which I was hoping to replace with a better-performing machine): It takes 57 minutes to export a 19-minute long video with Adobe Premiere.
    Same deceiving performance when exporting 1000 pictures from Lightroom. It takes forever.
    Even taking into account the 14'' throttling, I am really wondering why this performance is so much different from what UA-cam export and performance tests suggest.
    I am either editing on the internal SSD, which is blazing fast or on a Thunderbolt 4 external SSD (Acacis enclosure), which is also as fast as it gets for an external SSD.
    I am aware that Adobe Premiere is not the most optimized software for Mac, but still, this looks problematic. Do you have any suggestions?
    Thank you very much

    I didn’t do the test but I sold my 16 M1 Max almost maxxed out for $2250, tried the m3 pro max 14 maxed out $6300, returned it and ordered the m1 14 maxed out $2800. Put 3500 back in my pocket.
    I really just wanted a smaller computer. I won.
    Great video!

    but it's only about final cut and premiere. yeah, almost no difference in performance. i think we should wait for these software updates and after test it again.
    but for music production and 3d graphics - difference between m3 max and older chips is HUGE.. almost 1.7 - 3 times faster!

    Really not a good true comparison as your M1 is a lot older and obviously there's a lot more on it hard drive wise so it's obviously going be much slower versus a brand new machine.

  • @cmj0929

    There’s No logical reason to get an M3 max over an identically spec'd M1 Max , except for gaming (LOL) and slightly faster export speeds. Apple made a mistake with the M1 Pro and higher chips, they are aging like fine wine.

    Apple generations used to he 3-5x faster/better. Yes, 3-5 times faster. The m3 is 0.5-0.7x faster than the m1... Think about that and think about the price difference.
