I have the base 16" and I'm very happy thus far... I chose it over the 14" for the screen and battery but hoped for better thermals for longevity and slightly better sound, both of which turned out to be correct based upon your reviews (I've watched all of them). What I have to say is that your content on these new models has been phenomenal! Some of the reviewers are spending 30+ min with less information than what you are packing into 12 to 13, thank you for that and keep up the great work!
I totally over bought the 16 M1 Max... 32 core.... 64gb ram.... 4tb ssd... I am thinking I overbought... but I also think i future proofed it. Cant wait for it to arrive.
@Bisweswar Bose serious question, how long does these non Mac laptop lasts. mine always broke after 2 years max. So, I moved to MacBooks in 2013 and it is still running well! Newer MacBooks are too expensive for me so I am thinking about going for PC. my only worry is durability, are they as durable as MacBooks?
I had a 14 and a 16. My personal was a 16 inch but then my job gave me a 14 inch. I ended up using a 14 inch all the time and every time I went back to the 16 it just felt weird and awkward and just too big. Interesting. The bigger speakers are nicer and the microphone array much better but at the end of the day when I left my previous job and gave my laptop back I ended up trading my 16 for a 14.
I got the 16 inch, M1 Pro Base Version as it I believe it’s the best bag for buck. BIGGER SCREEN 💻 BIGGER BATTERY 🔋 BETTER SPEAKERS 🔊 CHARGING BRICK HAS MORE JUICE 🧃 Nonetheless … I am sure it suits my individual needs and may differ from person to person. ❤️ My MacBook Pro 💻
Good review. A huge chunk of deciding 14" vs 16 "is very dependent on what kind of work you do and how you do it. If you're a freelance animator or motion graphics artist who travels a lot then a 16" screen will be an absolute god send. I've spent the last 6 years travelling and working with a 2015 13" Retina Pro, which got the jobs done but having to work on C4D and AfterEffects, and using plug-ins, drives you absolutely bananas on a small screen.
Thank you for your comment. I am one of the struggling people confused of choosing which one. I was thinking of getting the 14 for portability but the 16 is really for freelance designers because of the screen estate
Good insights. Thanks. Personally I am going with the 14". I have had the "larger" size (a 2019 15" model) for the past couple of years. It is just large enough that I tend not to unplug it and use it as a "laptop" very often. 95% of the time it just sits connected to my 5K display. I am a landscape photographer and am often in the field but unless I am going on an extended trip I don't take the computer. Instead I make do with an 11" iPad Pro. My belief is that with the smaller model I will still get the additional performance and battery life while having a more portable model. With the 14" I am more likely to unplug it and take it into the field, to a coffee shop or even into other rooms in our home. Before I would get another larger (in this case the 16") I would probably get the next gen Mac Mini since I essentially use my current 15" in that fashion. So for me, portability is key. But I have had many years of working with both MacBook Airs (when I was constantly traveling for business) and larger 17" or 16" models. That said, videos like yours are always helpful. They show how Apple has accommodated the varying needs of a lot of people. Nothing is perfect. Because I will be using this often as a portable computer in the field and around the house I prefer NOT to have a lot of cables plugged in. I love having a docking station and simply plugging in one cable. I don't use HDMI and the SD card slot won't work with the Sony Type A cards that are in my cameras. I would have preferred that Apple give us the flexibility of choosing docking stations that have the ports that we need rather than taking up internal space that could have been used for larger batteries, more airflow or even making it smaller and lighter. But, again, you can't make everyone happy all the time. ;-)
They took awhile the HDMI and SD card back in 2016 for that reason exactly and people were pissed, if you want small and a dock get the M2 air I guess.
I bought the 14" as an upgrade from my old 15" intel MacBook Pro. I love the speed and portability of the laptop, but frustratingly, after a month I just can't get used to the smaller screen size. I didn't think 1" would make a difference but it does. So I'm returning it and getting the 16" instead!
Might take your experience into account. I was about to go for 14", but after using a 16" Intel MBP and 15" PC laptop for the past two years at work... I fear I may have gotten used to the large displays.
I'd go for the 16" just for the real estate. I like to be immersed in my projects as much as possible. As for portability, the 16" is actually a bit smaller than my current 15.6" laptop (weird, right?), and I have *no* problems carrying that around.
I’m not sure if you mean you work in real estate, but as an investor with the dozens of softwares I use, I’m looking for something that can process a lot of heavy applications at the same time. And I too like to be immersed in my projects. Hate my little screen on the 13”. I used that experience when buying my ipad pro 12.9”, and I regret buying the larger one when it comes to the ipad.
Your 15.6 laptop might be bigger just due to the bezels. The 16" that apple boasts is actually measuring the screen size, with minimal bezels, which keeps it smaller than other laptops such as yours.
Bought the 14" MacBook Pro 2021 with 10 core cpu and 16 core gpu. The 16" screen was a monster and didn't see how I could take it anywhere. Another idea was if I needed a bigger screen for a particular task then I could connect it to a larger screen I already have at home, instant decision from there!
Wow, this was a really good review. Love the pacing and tone of the presentation. One thing I'd like to see, though, is the video segments split and labeled into the different sections you're talking about. Other UA-camrs have started to do this, and have been extremely helpful. Otherwise, fantastic reviews!
I had a 14" 10/16/16 1tb in order from Apple but went into a store today and they had a 16" 10/16/16 512mb in stock. Since I don't need enormous disk space I canceled my 14" and bought the 16". I don't carry it around and the bigger screen is lovely. I have also seen tests that it has better sound, better cooling and better battery time so it was an easy choice for the exact same money.
I just had purchased my MacBook Pro 2021 in a 16 inch. I was very lucky because when I went to the store to get a 14 inch they didn’t have any 14 inch in the one terabyte. So the guy said to me we can do the 16 inch at the same price. That was $500 off. I felt like the luckiest guy. Four days into my journey with MacBook and I’m absolutely loving it
Personally i'd still go for the 14" even if the price was the same, it's just the compact factor that is a deal breaker for me. I can't imagine myself carrying that big 16" wherever I go. Previously I was the type that always went for the "biggest and the best" and I've had big laptops before but it's really not very convenient, and it's almost like you get unmotivated to carry your "portable" laptop with you just because it's not very portable. So I really recommend anyone that actually wants a portable device to go for the smaller 14" or even the 13". However, if you mainly use your laptop stationary at home, then the 16" is going to be more value for your money.
Help I want the best the best performance with 32 gigs one So should I still buy the 14 one? I have one month before deciding and Iam a shut in neet so
Well my thoughts exactly. When on the move i usually just take an ipad pro 12.9 so my laptop stays in the office 99% of the time so 16 it is (upgradingfrom the 2016 15 inch so...)
I think it depends- for carrying a 14“ is of course better. But using a smaller display for some hours a day (university) with splitted display? I chose the 16“…
I think this depends on whether or not this is your main machine. For those who have desktops they would obviously opt for the smaller one as they would only use it when travelling or using it in another location. For me, I got rid of my desktop years ago to save space. I don't like having to see any technology when I'm not using it. As it's my sole machine, I want a bigger laptop. If I'm in another location I'll just use an ipad or tablet for reading and/or my phone.
When testing both in the tech store, I also fell in love with the immersive screen and the amazing palm rest space of the 16”. I think when I’d upgrade, a 16” M1 Pro will replace my 2017 MacBook Pro 13”.
@@GurmeetSingh-fr8uo I went with the M1 Pro 16" with 1 TB of SSD and 16 GB of RAM. Loving it so far, the performance is nothing short of AMAZING! Whether it is cutting clips in Final Cut Pro, editing photo's in Lightroom or playing back music in Logic Pro X, everything is stupidly smooth.
I went with the fully spec'd 14". I commute with a backpack via metro and bicycle. I also intend to travel more in the next few years. I would have preferred the screen real estate of the 16", but the size and weight were ultimately the deciding variable. My 16" from 2019 is great, but its simply too big if you are truly going to be traveling and commuting a lot.
@@GurmeetSingh-fr8uo So far it has been drastically quieter and cooler than my previous 16" 2019 MBP. My 16" MBP would be too hot to touch, and the new 14" M1 Max barely gets warm - even when driving two external displays and running multiple creative applications. I'm very impressed. I haven't used it solely on battery very much but the few times I did, it took a while to get to 80%.
i wouldn’t mind taking 16inch at the expense of less portability. The bigger screen size will save your eyes in long run and extra space on screen will definitely increase productivity and comforting eyes will let you work longer hence better value in return. Its not a bad deal to get comforting eyes and bear a little compromise in portability. If i were in school or college i would go with 14inch.
I have one of both. I love my 14-in whenever I'm traveling or just taking it around. But the 16 is a great option for working from home or having on set when I'm producing something.
Basically if you have external display, keyboard and mouse setup at home the best decision would be to get a 14 inch with 10 core unit and 32 GBs of RAM. Still portable at 14 inch and you save a lot of $$$ over the 16 inch Pro Max.
Thanks for the great video. I have been trying to decide between 14” and 16” Mac Pro’s. My current laptop is a 10 year old 15” Dell latitude. Overall dimensions is 15”x 10.25” and weighs almost 7lbs. So with the 16” screen, overall it still is smaller and lighter and I get a bigger screen. So a win win. 🤣
For people saying 14 inch is more portable because of the weight and size difference, It's really not. I tried using the 14 inch for a week or so, but then just sold it off to a friend and picked up the 16 inch MacBook Pro M1 a year ago. I simply love using the 16 inch model. Bigger screen, better experience, better sound quality etc etc. I edit a lot of photos and a few videos in a year, so this was a perfect decision on my part. 70% of the time, the laptop will be sitting on my table while I edit photos or videos. The rest 30% I carry it around on my shoots where, again, its on the table waiting for file transfers from the shoot. 14 inch is not bad, but working on the 16 inch is something else. I had upgraded from a 15 inch MBP 2015, so this wasn't much of a jump for me.
I ordered mine from B&H and they don’t have an estimated delivery date yet. It’s the 16” M1 Max 32 GPU 64GB/1TB Been using my wife’s m1 air 8/256GB since June after selling off the 2018 15” i7 16GB/512GB 560X When did you order yours ?
I would like to see a fully maxed 14" go up against a 16", or at the very least, a 14" bumped up to the same CPU/GPU setup to get a better performance comparison.
From what I understand, since the 16 is larger it gets more screen, better battery, better sound resonance so crisper bass and of course better cooling which might factor into a 5-10% performance increase in terms of chip performance. Otherwise, they should perform very similarly if matched in specs.
@@Yubyop If other tests are to be believed, the performance differences come down to which version of the M1 you get. If both have the same M1 Pro 10/16; the 14 inch is actually slightly (like 2%) faster in some capacities. For the M1 Max, all things remain equal on the CPU front. For GPU tasks, the 16 inch ranges from being 0 - 10% faster for the Max 10/24 version and up to 20% faster for the Max 10/32 in some scenarios (others the advantage smaller). So...it seems like if you're going for the M1 Pro, your biggest concern should be screen size / portability. For the M1 Max, the 24 core GPU should be totally fine but the 32 core one actually isn't going to get you much of a performance increase due to thermal throttling. Honeslty, they probably shouldn't have offered the 32 core version in the 14 inch model since the advantages are so minimal (like less than 5%). That said, even in the 32 core version of the 16 inch model, the 32 core option isn't 50% faster as you might expect (check out some benchmarks). So for me, I'm more than happy to have less cores for the smaller form factor of 14 inches. I already have a desktop PC anyway so I don't want something that's so bulky I feel discouraged from taking it with me (same reason why I'm avoiding the Dell XPS 17 or hardcore gaming laptops).
@@BeierFilms You literally read my mind and experiences. Hp left me wounded 🤕 and scared of laptops for years i have the 17inch envy. Great comment appreciate it I'm going for the 14 for those reasons.
I bought 16" with more rams and I absolutely love it. I never have any heat problems meaning the fan does not need to work hard while it shows unbelievable performance.
@@gabrieldertnig depending on what you do. If you need heavy graphical tasks or if you need to use many apps at the same time, more rams make sense to me and I love it.
I've had the 13' MBP as my workhorse for years, tried and handled both the 14 and 16 before committing to the 14 as the buy. While I sit in the first class cabin on planes many times a year, the 16 being almost impossible to use comfortably in economy class was part of it. Weight I could deal with, but not being practical or usable in this one situation was a big one.
I own a 16" 2019 MBP and I will recommend the screen size if you travel a lot and from job site to job site. I spend a lot of time at my girlfriends house where I don't have my office setup/external monitor and can't imagine doing it on a 14". It's absolutely worth the screen real estate and hassle if you need it. If you are going from different coffee shops and absolutely need portability then go for 14".
So glad it was helpful! I can't really control views - I can just put out content that I think is useful and hope people get value from it. I appreciate the support!
Love my PC laptop. But I switch to iPhone and iPad these past few years and it looks like I’ll be switching entirely, especially since seeing how my software runs SO much more smoothly on my fiancée’s MacBook. Thanks for the information!
I was using a 13.3 MBA and a 15 inch older MBP - I had to get my computer temporary changed to a intel 16inch and for about 3-4 months I got used to that screen. So when I was given an option to choose the 14inch or 16inch, extra real estate of the 16inch is what I choose. My only regret is that I have to use it in bags and backpacks that support the larger laptop size and I can't use a compact bag. Still in the early stages so we'll see. But considering that I use my computer in both desktop and portable to look at data, code and other things. The extra screen should come in handy.
I bought the 16ins as I’m having problems with my eyes. Now I’m trying to learn all I can as coming from a PC to a Mac is a learning curve. Thanks for making such informative videos.
I’d wanna opt for the 16”, thus to pair with my 12.9” iPad Pro 2020. I would personally feel uncomfortable on a smaller mac, as the 13”s are very similar in terms of screen size or performance.
I am thinking about getting the below config: 14, M1 Pro (8, 14), 32Gb RAM, 1Tb SSD. I don’t do a lot of CPU intensive tasks, Gaming i do on console, but i do open a lot of stuff simultaneously, so RAM is making more sense over those 2 extra cores.
one important factor I didn't see mentioned is the size of the case relative to the former 15" MacBook models. Many of us are upgrading from those. I took my current 2019 15" MacBook to the Apple store to see and it turns out the the new 16" is pretty much the same size , maybe a 1/4 " bigger. The additional screen space arises from more efficient use (ie. less black area) around the actual display. SO, while it is bigger, slightly, it will still fit in many of the pockets, etc you might use currently.
I just bought the 1TB 16 MacBook Pro m1 pro for the following reasons 1 one of the larger Apple dealers here in Denmark had a great discount on alle the standard models of the 14 and the 16 inch including the max models but spending an additional roughly 800 dollars really would not speed up my workflow 2 I want for the 16 because I wanted a considerably bigger an way better display than the one on my m1 MacBook Air 3 I wanted a screen that would enable me to do HDR color grading when recording in Dolby vision on my iPhone. 4 I realized that a miniLED monitor, if Apple should decide to announce such a model, most likely will cost more than my new Mac combined with the studio display if I want even more screen estate
the 16in definitely feels clunkier... but goodness that screen is a sight for sore eyes. really dazzling liquid retina display and at that size, it's just a joy to look at and use especially if you work between different applications and tabs simultaneously often
Thanks for this great review. I just went to buy the 14" M1 Pro w/ 10-core CPU last night at Best Buy. They have them on sale for $400 off.. They had the 16" m1 pro w/ 1TB on sale for $2199.. it was only $100 more and as soon as I saw the 16" display and listened to the speakers I knew I would be totally unhappy walking away with the 14". I was beginning to doubt my purchase bc of the weight/size issue when traveling, but this review makes me feel confident in my purchase. Thanks again
I was just able to purchase a 16” 32gb, 1 tb SSD with M1 Max for $2300. Apple Certified refurb’s which look brands new and come with full warranty. Feel like a steal ( I believe this machine was sold for $3500 a few months back). Amazing screen, biggest difference I noticed moving from my almost 10 year old 15” Late 2013 MacBook Pro (16GB ram and 512gb SSD upgraded to 1 tb). That old laptop still works greats. But it’s nice jump to this laptop. Still getting used to the weight the 15” was almost 700grams lighter, which feels significant right now, but I’ll get used to it. Amazing piece of machinery.
@@Zhibek85 I wish I could tell you for sure. I am overall satisfied with the system, but I do not program. I did see a big change from my 2013 MBA. I would look more for opinions from programmers. For what I have seen, the increase between m1 and m2 is not that big, so look at the prices. but yes, I am overall happy as it improved my quality of life significantly... but again, I use it to record music, edit a video here and there, and watch youtube.
I have said this before and I will say it again. the 16" is NOT too heavy. I cary it in a slim case bag that can carry cables, the huge charger, some cash and my iPhone 13 pro max. It is all not too heavy. Having the extra screen-estate is so unbelievably useful. It is a work from home power house. Get the bigger one. You will not be disappointed.
Awesome review! one thing is that I saw some tests out there that make 32GB of ram look like the most pointless upgrade ever, the speed of both RAM and SSD for swaps makes 16GB model perform almost identical so perhaps investing in storage is best or really just sticking to the base model
I think that's fair at this point in time - what I would regret, is 3-4 years down the road, having a computer that's plenty powerful but that doesn't have enough RAM. It may just be me being cautious.
If you do not use big files often, then 16 GB RAM is ok. But if you do work with bigger files at a daily basis (big projects, photo, film editing), swapping will kill your SSD earlier. Keep this in mind. The 512 GB SSD should have a max of 200 TB written and the 1 TB SSD a max of 400 TB written. Just multiply your big data usage with less RAM over your estimated usage time for you mac. You cannot replace the SSD afterwards.
@@iXeo81 those TBW numbers are really low. An average Samsung drive delivers better numbers. And there are drives way beyond that. Yes, I considered the size too. A good PC nvme SSD 1 TB is around 1.500 TBW right now. Apple's SSDs are beyond that
@@zeus1117 I just looked at the ifixit which ssd apple used and then looked at there specs on the web page, but of course it was not the same product because I only saw the specs for private customers and not for b2b. Maybe the values are higher, maybe not.
I think if your priority is performance and silence and of course you can afford, the 16 inch is a better option. But if portability is your main priority and don’t care about fan noise, the 14 inch is a monster. Amazing video!
@@FoxSleeping sometimes I think for somebody makes a difference. I’m a photographer and some colleagues prefer 13/14 inch laptops rather than 15/16 inch to use at the airplane or fit in a small bag.
For super slow, but wholly doable charging, I have found the 2020 iPad Pro 20 watt power brick charges the 16” while watching video in “low power mode” via usb-c. It takes about an hour to charge to 100% from 75%. But that doesn’t concern me. And the supplied 140 watt brick makes me uncomfortable because it gets way hotter than the 20 watt brick. I tested this with a 2m Apple USB-C cable. After some investigation, I discovered that the system actually specifically recognises the 20 Watt supply to adjust the charge demand. So even if your use exceeds the smaller supply’s capacity to supply energy, it would still stretch the battery. And the iPad charger is significantly more portable. So if you do not need fast charge capability, and you are lugging your 16” (10core, 16GPU) around to deliver presentations, across the city, carrying an iPad Pro charger in your pocket maybe the solution you were looking for.
So in a nutshell, the 16 is worth the extra 500... It's not just the better screen, but 30% faster as extra cores, runs longer thanks to the bigger battery, better sounds, bigger trackpad and runs cooler... Sold...
Thanks for the very informative video. I am typing this on my 2007 2.4ghz 17" MacbookPro that I was recently using for video editing with an older version of Final Cut Pro, but the rendering times ! ! ! ! The 16" will be the way I go after hearing your comments. I spent over AU$5000 on the 2007 MacbookPro and FCP software and have been very happy with it, and certainly surprised that it is still going, so not at all concerned at spending what ever is necessary to get a new laptop spec'd to last another decade . . . perhaps ;-)
I use a 13" as personal and my work gave me a 16" couple of weeks back. And man, this feels like a huge upgrade. The display, sound and keyboard blew me away. I will buy the bigger models when it's time again.
I agree with you that absolutely drove me nuts too about the ports. I’m using a mid 2012 MacBook Pro now. It’s been a great computer but I would’ve upgraded last year had they had more port. I do not want to pay this much for a laptop and then have to plug-in three different dongle’s or have one giant big dongle hanging off the thing to get anything done. I can’t even believe they did that and it drove me bananas. So I just did not upgrade now I’m thinking of upgrading as of November 2021 with the latest release.
This video helped me make the decision to upgrade on a bigger screen size. I wanted a machine that would last me for years at a high performance & you have given me peace of mind. Thank you for your content, you are one of the best tech content creators right now! 🙌🏼👏🏻
The 16" has better thermal management but I think the 14" model suffers from an issue where the fans turn on way too early around 65c vs 80c core temps for the 16" model... hopefully they'll sort it out with a firmware update.
Great video, Personally I will go for a 14 inch, size matters. Usually I will carry a laptop and camera gears with me. Before I used 15,6 2018 Mac the size and weight is bit too much for portability. If I don’t need to move around, I will defiantly choose 16 size as larger screen better cooling and speaker quality are better. Ordered 14 size max 32gpu with 32ram hopefully fan won’t get too noisy while editing large project. At home I mainly use a 16 inch 3070 windows laptop for code and game. So Personally, i think it will be a good combination of powerful work and portability.
I also spent over 4 grand for a maxed out 14" but also because I only buy a Pro laptop once every decade... my last one was the 2010 Macbook Pro with all its ports, 1st generation Mag Safe, DVD player, and ethernet port and that firewire 800 thing !
Really enjoyed your calm talking style vs some that seem excited or hyper, having a normal conversation about a product!! I am looking at the ProMax, 10-(24/32),-16, 1TB, 32 Ram to use for Photography, possible video and future proofing.
I really appreciate the feedback Mike - thank you for being part of the channel! Ay of the M1 Pro Max would absolutely crush photography and video needs. Even the M1 Pro is incredibly powerful
@@TechGearTalk Thanks for the advice and I just saw a video from Max Tech that said don’t waste your money on the Max Upgrade with only 38-58 seconds gained between the Pro vs Max!! @@mikedavis1110 considering that all computers regardless of software slows down. Considering that all software is designed to work on OS but not for compatibility with every software. Considering that software patches can change performance and perhaps use more storage. The future proofing is possible only by counting for such issues by thinking of the slowing effects. That will be noticed by end users after years, depending upon software added, RAM, graphics card, processor, storage (not enough operating free space), and how it’s used and how often used by end user. Consider when do you want to buy another computer vs when can you afford to buy a replacement computer. Some of the commentators are forgetting what Tech Gear Talk and Max Tech and a few others had mentioned. Using my own words. Thanks for replying. The 16” looks like a great option; depending on your financial situation. My finances are not all that great; no… they are not. ( wish i could have that choice) But at least a 14” is a good start for me anyway. Someone mentioned on Amazon…. It’s a bit small. If that’s the case; what does that say about the M2 MacBook Pro 13” + As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve never used a laptop before; only an iPad Pro; so… this is something very new & exciting for me, to get my hands on. The Amazon reviews are quite encouraging too. In the U.K. 🇬🇧 the 16” model is around 3K + depending on what upgrades you choose. But nevertheless, very expensive to buy. Even the 14” model in the U.K. is around 2K. Although, slightly less expensive in the states, perhaps? But all in all…… cannot really wait to get my hands on this, mac pro 14” laptop. i was thinking of upgrading to that iPad Pro 2022 with the M2 chip. But was advised to buy an Apple Mac instead; as the iPad Pro is still, not a real computer anyway; and is even more expensive to buy this year 2022. I’ll still be keeping my iPad Pro; that way… I’ll have the best of both worlds. Kind regards. Friday afternoon 28th October 2022. U.K. Southampton. 🇬🇧💻
What a lot of people dont understand is that the notch does not go into the display, instead they increased the display so it is 16.2" now instead of 16".
I will get the 16 inch Macbook pro base model because I rarely move and for gaming I have a console and this laptop for everything else and I will like the bigger screen as I am not going to be using a external monitor!

This was probably the best video I have seen on these 2 units, and I don't know how I'm just now seeing it. I probably watch 2-3 video every week or two, trying to decide about what to pick for an upgrade. Going from the 15" mid 2015 to the 16 is probably where I sit. It held up to all of my demands for the most part, but of course I'm seeing more and more performance drops with the age. Thanks again for the great comparison.
Im coming from a 2010 15" MacBook Pro. I tried a 14" convertible... easily NOPE... much too small so i was going for the 16" and its just awesome to have the same footprint but a bigger screen!
I think I will go with the 16" version, because I don't want to use an external screen, but still feel comfortable. I'm using Logic Pro and I want a compact computer I can put on a stand at my synth, but still take around with me if I want to. For now, my 15" 2017 MBP still serves me well. I might also get a 12.9 iPad Pro for sheet music and as a secondary screen for my MBP or to use it with Logic Remote and other things.
I have the 14" macbook pro and i am happy with it, i have limited deskspace and i have a big and bulky pc setup, so a big laptop isn't something for for me, i chugged for 10 years on the 2012 macbook pro retina, that i wwas due for an upgrade, but i didn't like the intel macbook pro's flaws from 2016 onwards, and since the 2012 did everything i needed, i didn't needed anything better (from 2012 to 2015 isn't that big of a jump in the 13 size), i was using patchers to get it up to the latest macos, but when apple showed off these m1 pro machines, i finally got excited again over a laptop, i went to the store, felt them both (i have a back injury so yes, weight is a problem for me) and i set my mind on the m1 pro 10 core 14 inch, and a couple of months later, i finally jumped ship and got the laptop and oh boy, i am soo happy with this machine! It's nice, it feels great, the screen is so much better than any other laptop out there, i went for 1TB of storage (my previous macbook had 512gb and i used about half of the space, so for my needs it is more than enough space), and this macbook is going to stay with me for as long as possible, i hate the touchbar, i hate dongles for everything, but with this macbook pro, i just take the laptop and i have everything i need with me, including magsafe, man that feature is so apple, why they ever got rid of it is beyond me. Great video man really!
I think the 16” is just too big for transporting frequently. It’s more of a desktop replacement. I had a hard time choosing but I ended up going with the 14”
@@ulasonat5042 yes. I really like it. It’s on the heavier side but I got used to it. It’s nice to have the extra screen space. I’m glad I went with the 16 in the end. I still have my 2017 13” MacBook Pro and I’ve realized a big screen is really important to have on a laptop you use everyday.
awesome videos. one thing, it would help a whole lot if you could put sections with time stamps built into your vids! thanks so much for all the videos on these new macs, they’re very helpful.
Thanks for this great comparison review! I am a big MBP fan. I haven’t upgraded or bought a new MBP since my first MBP 2012. It is still working fine up to this day except for its “zero” key and touchpad which has some “touch” issue (i can no longer use it to drag files to or from folder to folder). Other than these 2 issues, my love for it has not diminished since the first time I used it in 2013. ☺️ Now I am off to buying my new MBP 2021. 😃
Waiting for my 10-core CPU/14-core GPU 14" MBP. Seriously though, I’ve watched so many reviews and nobody even mentions about that configuration. I’m glad someone finally talked about it, I was beginning to feel the only weirdo who bought that version.
CONGRATS! I think that is actually a really good upgrade to just go to the 10 cpu, because post people won't see a difference between the 14-16 gpu. Hope you love it when you get it. Appreciate you being part of the channel!
Watching this on my 14" M1 Pro 10/16 32GB/1TB, that just got delivered this week! Very good video - good presentation and helpful both for lesser experienced ppl and deep-in-the-Apple-verse of us! Only thing I would mention is that you compared it in the beginning to the current M1 13" MBP (eg. only 2 ports in a "Pro" laptop). To be fair, that was always the "low-end" model (that was only introduced w/ the 2016's) of the 13". The 14" should really be compared to the high-end 13" Intel MBP (4-ports) that it was really replacing.
I just got the 16 inch yesterday and am looking forward to editing my next video with it! My previous model was a 10-year-old iMac. I think I'll be happy with this :)
You literally can’t go wrong with either one. I have the 16 but I like the big screen. I don’t think it’s harder to used or really that’s much bulkier it still fits in a bag and that’s what matters.
Helpful video! Another I’d like to see is a comparison for use cases. Which configurations are best for designers, programmers, gamers, video editors, etc. Understanding which specs are most important for various professional needs is key. (Especially when upgrading from a lot older laptops)
Question to the community and subject matter experts. About to venture into the world of architecture/interior design. I will not be doing heavy CAD work, but may need to have access to CAD files for the work flow. I will run Rendering softwares/extentions, SketchUp + Extensions, and learning Revit or other associated programs for the sector. Which MacBook (Pro) range and spec should I be looking to get my money's worth? So far it seems that 16GB RAM is insufficient for my future work. Pretty sure that the base storage option is not suitable either. As the files I will deal with are high in detail, and size. My future workplace uses Apple computers (hence my post). A single tree does not make a forest. Help?
@@gabrieldertnig thanks for the info. The price point is the real sticking point. As Apple products aren’t known to be “affordable” as we all know. I’ll keep researching, keeping in mind of the MBP 16” as a start point.
Thanks for this, it's helpful! I've never had a laptop. I have an iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, iPod. My desktop is from 2004 or 2005? And it's a Dell. I've been running my own direct sales business for 30 years (started before we even had computers!) and I'm excited to purchase my first laptop! I've always been attracted to the bigger, shinier, prettier, pricier "thing", and I can feel that here, but realistically, I think the 14 inch should serve me fine. I do lots of zoom and virtual appointments, facebook lives, etc. Again, thank you for the info!
i was thinking of upgrading the RAM, but if i was going for the base 14", would upgrading the SSD instead of the SoC be just as enticing (for once). First of all its a cheaper upgrade, it also gives you more breathing room so you can carry less external drives around, and like other SSDs, bigger is better. But in this case bigger seems to be really better. Apples claims of how fast their SSDs are arent actually true unless you upgrade to 6? 8? TBs... and even going from 512 to 1TB, some reviewers saw a doubling of their read and writes. i mean if you need more cores, you need more cores, but if thats the case for you, wouldnt you be looking at the max, even if it meant having to finance it? Are 2 cpu cores and 2 gpu cores going to be game changing? again, this is all just based on what ive seen from other peoples reviews, but based on what I've seen, it looks like you do get a decent bump in gpu performance, but the cpu's gains are almost immaterial. Just my 2 cents. last time i bought a MBP, i went for a cpu, gpu, RAM, and SSD upgrade... and the buyers remorse is real. im still bitter. personally, if i dont wait to see whats next and just get one of these mbps, i was thinking 14" base with extra storage or just get the mid tier 16". I'm also not liking the way apple seems to not care about frying their chips... one of maxtechs videos showed cpu temps getting as hot as 105 degrees C.
Just after the M2 Pro Macbook Pro release, I bought an M1 Pro MacBook Pro. After watching numerous reviews, I chose the 14 inch 10/16 16 GB RAM/1TB SSD version, at a $500.00 discount. Awesome machine!
Battery tests show that the M1 Max has significantly worse battery life than the Pro (even with light usage), and on the 14 inch especially battery life will be pretty bad with the 32 GPU core Max. So i'd not recommend the Max chip 14 inch for anyone looking for a laptop with good batterylife.
I was in the market for a new macbook this week. Budget was around $1000-$1200 so naturally I thought my only option was a MacBook air. Well I ended up taking a look at apple's refurbished section online. Ended up finding 14" m1 pro model 16gb ram, 512gb SSD and pro chip for $1250. If I wanted a new 14" M2 model I think the cheapest I could find was around $2000 . So definitely a good bang for the buck Just got it in the mail yesterday and you can't even tell it's a refurb. Looks absolutely brand new! It's my first pro model so I'm really excited to use it more. But point of this post is to checkout apple's refurbished section
I absolutely do NOT need the fully spec'ed M1 Pro Max. But I am getting it because it may well be my last laptop. I expect to have this thing for at least 10 years and then I'll be 84. I do not know what I will be interested in, or cable of, at that age. Right now I do hobby video (FCPX), drone and photography (PS and LR). I don't "think" I want the 16" because this thing will be sitting in my lap. A lot. I'll cart it back to my office when I am playing video editor (3 27 " HD monitors). But then this is me. Thanks for the comparisons and suggestions. Be pleased to see what you think of a maxed 14 and 16 compared.
Fantastic job explaining the differences between the 14 and 16 models. Based on what you said, I'll go with the 16" and add the extra 16GB of memory. Thanks for the great content!!
I got the 16" for the simple fact that my eyes aren't getting any younger.
I’m right there with you John! Thank you for being part of the channel!

@@dtrejo9182 No, it's 14", which is smaller than 16".
So did I.

Probably, but you’re going to love it Matt.
That would $7349 Australian dollars I’m not destitute but I couldn’t justify that to the missus

Good review. A huge chunk of deciding 14" vs 16 "is very dependent on what kind of work you do and how you do it. If you're a freelance animator or motion graphics artist who travels a lot then a 16" screen will be an absolute god send. I've spent the last 6 years travelling and working with a 2015 13" Retina Pro, which got the jobs done but having to work on C4D and AfterEffects, and using plug-ins, drives you absolutely bananas on a small screen.
or if you work a lot with music DAW the larger screen is mandatory as the smaller screen will drive you nuts!
Thank you for your comment. I am one of the struggling people confused of choosing which one. I was thinking of getting the 14 for portability but the 16 is really for freelance designers because of the screen estate
@@GuitarsAndSynths can confirm. I upgraded to the 16” because Ableton on a 13” was completely unusable for me

It might not be that obvious at first, but after a while you'll start to realize it is actually a slight upgrade from the Classic.
But, again, you can't make everyone happy all the time. ;-)
@Kurt Yazici 3 hours more battery usually not a deal breaker but it can be. I usually go big but I'll go small this time for portability.
Can you tell us which 5k monitor you use with your mac?! :)
@@DiogoExMarques maybe try (artificially) restricting the usage of your current screen to 14" and see how it feels :)

He’s referring to real estate as the space that the screen size allows.
How do you determine how much CPU and GPU you need?
Wow, this was a really good review. Love the pacing and tone of the presentation. One thing I'd like to see, though, is the video segments split and labeled into the different sections you're talking about. Other UA-camrs have started to do this, and have been extremely helpful. Otherwise, fantastic reviews!
Thank you for the kind words and the feedback!
Help I want the best the best performance with 32 gigs one
So should I still buy the 14 one?
I have one month before deciding and Iam a shut in neet so
Well my thoughts exactly. When on the move i usually just take an ipad pro 12.9 so my laptop stays in the office 99% of the time so 16 it is (upgradingfrom the 2016 15 inch so...)

base modeL?

How much ram and ssd?
@@GurmeetSingh-fr8uo I went with the M1 Pro 16" with 1 TB of SSD and 16 GB of RAM. Loving it so far, the performance is nothing short of AMAZING! Whether it is cutting clips in Final Cut Pro, editing photo's in Lightroom or playing back music in Logic Pro X, everything is stupidly smooth.
@@boaztepper7871 That's exactly what I just picked up. Hoping the 16gb ram is good enough for web development down the road...
i have the 2017 13” pro too and have been debating the 16” and i’m glad i’ve seen this comment, how are you finding it?
I went with the fully spec'd 14". I commute with a backpack via metro and bicycle. I also intend to travel more in the next few years. I would have preferred the screen real estate of the 16", but the size and weight were ultimately the deciding variable. My 16" from 2019 is great, but its simply too big if you are truly going to be traveling and commuting a lot.
How is the thermals and fan noise? Battery life ?
Getting a 16" M1 Max with 32 GB tomorrow. Waiting to put my hands in it. Thanks for all your videos!
Oh wow!!! CONGRATS!!! You are going to love it! Glad I the videos are helpful.
I ordered mine from B&H and they don’t have an estimated delivery date yet. It’s the 16” M1 Max 32 GPU 64GB/1TB
Been using my wife’s m1 air 8/256GB since June after selling off the 2018 15” i7 16GB/512GB 560X
When did you order yours ?
The 14” is the best size.
I would like to see a fully maxed 14" go up against a 16", or at the very least, a 14" bumped up to the same CPU/GPU setup to get a better performance comparison.
Literally looking for this video online

@@gabrieldertnig depending on what you do. If you need heavy graphical tasks or if you need to use many apps at the same time, more rams make sense to me
and I love it.
Thank you for sharing your process. More proof that practicality should be a priority.
I got the 14” I personally felt like the 16” was too big. I think the 14” is more portable.
I’ve ordered the full-spec 1TB 16”. I don’t need all that power now but I want a computer that can handle everything for many years to come.
1TB is not full-spec😂
I own a 16" 2019 MBP and I will recommend the screen size if you travel a lot and from job site to job site. I spend a lot of time at my girlfriends house where I don't have my office setup/external monitor and can't imagine doing it on a 14". It's absolutely worth the screen real estate and hassle if you need it. If you are going from different coffee shops and absolutely need portability then go for 14".
Very good comparison! Why aren‘t there more views… the fan performance aspect definitely helped me to pick the right model. Thanks!
So glad it was helpful! I can't really control views - I can just put out content that I think is useful and hope people get value from it. I appreciate the support!
I got the 14” M2 max. 1TB, 16GB. It is a BEAST. Rendering from FCP Pro, using Pro Tools. Haven’t heard the fan yet. No regrets.
I just sit and watch your videos. They are really relaxing and informative at the same time. 👏🏻
I'm so glad to hear that and I appreciate it!
I would personally feel uncomfortable on a smaller mac, as the 13”s are very similar in terms of screen size or performance.
which one has the better sound and speakers my 2019 16 inch has speakers to blow you away great for music production
The 16” definitely has the better sound.
@@TechGearTalk thank you 😀
100% getting the 16” now. Thanks man!
So glad I could help
I was sure about the 14, but then again, I never had a 16" notebook. Now I'm leaning towards the bigger one 👀
I am thinking about getting the below config:
14, M1 Pro (8, 14), 32Gb RAM, 1Tb SSD.
I don’t do a lot of CPU intensive tasks, Gaming i do on console, but i do open a lot of stuff simultaneously, so RAM is making more sense over those 2 extra cores.
I have to sell both kidney. Ohh god ,any rich person do give me a laptop.
I simply want a larger screen. I’d buy the M1 base model version if that was an option.
Same
one important factor I didn't see mentioned is the size of the case relative to the former 15" MacBook models.
Thank you very much for contributing to the community.
I'm a 15" guy and I really wish Apple would've come out with 15" model. I know I'm being picky. But, that's my preference! 😎
Late for this, for sure. but I just got a 16" M1 Pro in 2023. I found it for cheaper than the 14" M3 pro version.
Hopefully I made the right call.
Did you made the right call? I was planning to buy it, but peoples says that M1 Pro is old and I should get m2 with 16gb for programming
Would you guys say that it’s worth upgrading RAM or SSD storage if you had to choose?
Watching this from my 2012 mac pro that still works like a charm and made it through the Limewire days
I think if your priority is performance and silence and of course you can afford, the 16 inch is a better option. But if portability is your main priority and don’t care about fan noise, the 14 inch is a monster. Amazing video!
I think that's a very good way to frame it! Thank you for watching and for the kind words.
If two inches makes something not portable from portable, sounds like bias over anything else.
@@FoxSleeping sometimes I think for somebody makes a difference. I’m a photographer and some colleagues prefer 13/14 inch laptops rather than 15/16 inch to use at the airplane or fit in a small bag.
@@FoxSleeping I can fit a small bag with the 14 inch in a saddlebag on my bike, barely… the 16 won’t fit at all. Huge difference for me.
the 16 " is only 250 € more expensive...
Traded my 2019 16 in for the new 14 in. Loving the smaller screen. Have a desktop for when I want a bigger screen for something
CONGRATS Dan! What an upgrade!
@@TechGearTalk Thank you!
Me too and 14” os awesome compare to 16” 2019 i7
I agree with you that absolutely drove me nuts too about the ports.
Same bro
CONGRATS! The fans have been very quiet. I have never heard them (even though I know they are on)
I also spent over 4 grand for a maxed out 14" but also because I only buy a Pro laptop once every decade... my last one was the 2010 Macbook Pro with all its ports, 1st generation Mag Safe, DVD player, and ethernet port and that firewire 800 thing
!
I know you said Max would crush my needs, but would the Max be more for future needs??? I had thought the extra 24/32 GBU’s was the last question left, now it seems the Base 16”unit is all one needs.
It’s for Pro users, Professionals that means you get paid to do the work or getting to prepare for getting paid for your works.
@@DBE008 Thanks for the input and yes the system should last for awhile accounting for future needs. I did get the better process/Ram for the reasons you stated.

What a lot of people dont understand is that the notch does not go into the display, instead they increased the display so it is 16.2" now instead of 16".
I'll take a notch with a bigger display every time
I will get the 16 inch Macbook pro base model because I rarely move and for gaming I have a console and this laptop for everything else and I will like the bigger screen as I am not going to be using a external monitor!
TGT is hands down the BEST reviewer on UA-cam. I have never seen anyone pack so much great information in a short amount of time compared to him! I bought my gimbals, Canon M50 Mirrorless Camera, and now my new Macbook because of his reviews. THANK YOU for always crushing it!
I’m so glad it was helpful. Thank you for watching - and good luck!!!
I had a hard time choosing but I ended up going with the 14”
Please, let us know your experience with it!
let us know please!
do you regret your decision or are you content with it?
@@ulasonat5042 yes. I really like it. It’s on the heavier side but I got used to it. It’s nice to have the extra screen space. I’m glad I went with the 16 in the end. I still have my 2017 13” MacBook Pro and I’ve realized a big screen is really important to have on a laptop you use everyday.
awesome videos. one thing, it would help a whole lot if you could put sections with time stamps built into your vids! thanks so much for all the videos on these new macs, they’re very helpful.
Thanks Josh! I appreciate the suggestion!
the notch has 3 things, camera, green light when its active + a true tone sensor that adapts colours and sleeps when you close your mac
Got the 16in because I’m getting older and I don’t use an external monitor. Don’t miss having a cluttered desk anymore.
Ordered the MB Pro 14 10 core 16 core gpu the next morning after the revealing its showing delivery date Dec 22nd might have to go with a 16..smh .
Being a UI designer, I really like the 16" I just got. No complaints from me so far!
I customized same specs since the launch, mine only arrived last week. I’m disappointed but okay with the performance

I went with 16 M1 PRO 32/2T so glad about it
Please do a video about RAM importance and if going with more RAM than SSD is better for longevity. Also please try to explain 'Memory Swapping'
RAM isn’t important unless you are editing videos etc the bigger the project the more ram you need
You were the only UA-camr that convinced me about the model I should buy. Thanks! You got a new fan over here, Cheers from Italy!
So glad I could help! Thank you for being part of the channel!
Help?
The m1 chips seem to be so good that depending on your budget a m1 pro 16" might do a great job!
@@gabrieldertnig thanks for the info. The price point is the real sticking point. As Apple products aren’t known to be “affordable” as we all know.
I’ll keep researching, keeping in mind of the MBP 16” as a start point.
I no joke, went from a 2006 MacBook Pro to the 14inch base model Pro. So you can imagine what kind of upgrade that is.
Idk how you were even using a E Machine… those things were frustrating in the times they peaked.
Wow - amazing! Must feel like you’re flying a spaceship!
i like compact stuff but that extra size on 16 inch is perfect, amazing machine for work
Great relaxed video. Convinced me my purchase of the 14” is spot on. Thanks!
So glad it was helpful Mark. Thank you for being part of the channel!
CONGRATS!!! You got an amazing MacBook! Thank you for being part of the channel!
No lol

I wish apple would integrate the apple pencil functionality with the giant trackpad. That would make a lot of creatives happy.
