Hey Chaps! Quick correction there’s no 16GB M1 Max option, just 32/64. (too many late nights this week) 😅 👉 UPDATE: On further tests - the M1 Max DOES significantly impact battery. I'm removing the battery part of this video, and will cover it in my review. Stay tuned!
How many unified memory that you think enough for M1 Max? I considering 32 or 64GB, I mainly use for Final Cut (4K, H264, Prores, multicam) and Lightroom Classic. Thanks.
Awesome video as always, cheers Tom. One thing, the Max doesn’t come with a 16GB option, it starts at 32GB. You mentioned a good choice would be the M1 Pro with the 32GB option but at that point it’s “only” £300 more to jump up to the M1 Max (which as mentioned starts at 32GB). I find the pricing to be really crafty this year making these upgrade options ridiculously tempting.
The only thing to think would be the battery. I initially wanted to go for the M1 Max but I ended up getting the pro w 32GM and it has lasted me all day. (I’m a creative person). I’ve been reading that M1 Max can have a 6 hour difference from the pro one. So I don’t think the upgrade is worth it if it’s affecting the battery unless you have a good usage for the GPU.
Also upgrading from 16 gigs to 32 gigs cost you same as moving from 32 gigs to 64 gigs!! I found that very tempting but had to stick to standard option for faster delivery.
The MacBook Air would indeed be the best option for casual users and even a good amount of non-video content creation. I got mine refurbished with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD for $250 less than what it would have cost new, which was a no-brainer since they come with the same warranty coverage.
I've done tons of video editing on my macbook air M1, it is a beast and handles it just fine. Remember, the M1 is faster than all the intel macbooks before it, and those were used by millions to edit video too. I honestly think most of these people are just trying to justify spending more money. "oh crap but if I got the air I couldn't edit videos I have to spend the extra $2k" lmao BULLSHIT.
@@theNimboo or some people just need the best laptop since they make money from their macbook? Not everyone can get by with an air, especially not with those gpu cores.

For the M1 Pro vs M1 Max battery life comparison, would it be possible for you to investigate exactly what makes the M1 Max more power hungry at idle/ basic workloads? Is it the extra GPU cores? Is it the extra RAM capacity? Is it the increased memory bandwidth? I'm not exactly sure how to isolate any of these, but currently deciding between M1 Max 32GB RAM and M1 Pro 32GB RAM (Pro if it has better battery, Max if they're equal)

Every single device I own has that added and it's a further $250 on top which, again, never seems to get mentioned. Since I keep my MBP's in top working order for at least 4 to 6 years, I decided to future proof my setup and went with the 14", 10/24 M1 Max, 32GB and 1TB for storage. (Already have a Sandisk 2TB as a backup so no more than 1Tb was necessary) Yes, it's expensive and somewhat overkill but because I'm in education, I also got a sweet $600 off that final price AND the entire software bundle including FCP and Logic Pro for only $200 more. All up that epic configuration cost me $3200 which was just over my "max" budget. Can't argue with that!
By the time you spec the Macbook Air with 16/512, you're just a bit away from the base 14inch. I would say the base 14 is best bang for the buck if the base Air (8/256) is not enough.
Not enough for what? I had M1 Mac mini and M1 Air, both with 8GB RAM and everything was buttery smooth including 4k video editing in FCP and Sony RAW 50mp image editing in C1. Storage I kinda agree, 512 is minimum for me unless you want to carry external all the time. My M1 8GB Macs were faster than previous Intel 16GB RAM Macs. Now I am on 16" base and it's just more headroom, general snappiness hasn't changed a lot as it's same M1 but more CPU cores, more GPU cores. Single core performance is exact same.
I'd love to see a battery comparison test between the two 16 inch laptops. The Verge's review says that the difference between the M1 Pro and M1 Max is significant (16 hours vs 10 hours). I ordered the M1 Max even though I don't really need the extra performance so I'm wondering if I should return it and get the M1 Pro for more battery life instead.
@@Thetechchap do we have a verdict on the battery life difference between M1 Pro and M1 Max in a like-for-like scenario ? Most of the reviewers compare M1 Pro 14inch with the M1 Max 16inch, which is useless considering even only the difference in battery size
So I've seen a few videos comparing the M1 Pro to the M1 Max in the 16 inch form, and I think there are some discrepancies, or at least different conclusions, on whether the M1 Max impacts battery life more so than the M1 Pro. Here you've found there's no significant difference. My question is, what might change that? Like is there a specific use where the GPU cores are put to work more on the M1 Max than the M1 Pro to the point that one could say, "yeah the M1 Max is going to suffer a bit (relatively speaking) compared to the M1 Pro battery"?
The Verge's review pegged the M1Max16"(10 hours) six hours less of battery than the M1Pro16"(16 hours), due to the extra cores needing to be powered, whether in use or not.
@@Thetechchap Interesting. So you also found with all things being equal i.e. running similar tasks, the Max had significantly 'worse' (both very good I know) battery life compared to the Pro?
Did you notice much difference in the fan noise? I've heard the Max fans kick in a lot more and are much louder. I'll be going for the 32Gb of ram but can't decide between the Pro or the Max.
I am in the same situation, the extra noise of the Max would make me go for the Pro 32Gb instead of the Max 32Gb. But I am not sure how much is the noise difference.
@@PabloMandado From other vids I've seen the 16" version handles the heat better so the fan noise isn't that noticeable with the Max. The 14" with the max does get pretty loud though.
What software versions were you running on FCPX and OS? Luke Miani didn't see any difference between M1 Pro and M1 Max. I believe it could be software versions. I did a test. On the M1 MBA, it took me 17:32 to export a 30 min 4K Canon Log 3. At the store on the M1 Pro MBP, it took 19:15. But they were running FCPX 10.5.6, 10.6 was optimized for the new chips... Not helping me decide which ones to get. Your video helps more. I might just wait until we have the 27 inch update ;)
I actually got the M1 MacBook Air with 8gb ram to edit professional videos on and.... drumroll... it does edit video. You have to use proxies sometimes (and I mean only sometimes, if you're doing multi cams with 4k footage), and it's hard work with After Effects, but it's actually genuinely not bad! Which means the M1 pro is going to be very good, and the M1 Max is going to be exceptional. I'm personally going to get the M1 Max with 32gb because the Air isn't truly enough and stress free editing is a huge deal, but yeah, if you're new or on a very low budget the air will be enough to go into professional video production.
I ordered 24 core GPU. Is it worth getting 32 core GPU? Also what about thw battery life does higher GPU affect battery life and thermal performance. I recently got M1 pro and it barely gets hot and fan rarely kicks in which I can't even hear. Battery life is also amazing. I just want to know if higher gpu is going to affect these aspects? Thank you. Please respond soon as there is order delay so have to order soon. Appreciate your help
EXCELLENT VIDEO Thank You for sharing this video... Here it is November, 2024... and most people are looking at the M4... and I'm over here looking at your video (3 years old)... because I don't need aMBP that is faster... I have had a MBP for 13 years now... a 2011 17" and it has died. I am a writer... speed is not my forte... but I do need another MBP that will help me with Filmmaking.... Editing... Writing... Final Draft... Final Cut Pro etc... I saw in another video that a lot of MBP users that have the M1 pro do not want to upgrade to the M4... Wow which says a lot.... I do want at least the 16" because I'm used to a 17" laptop... What do you recommend... please tell me the truth... this is my career we're talking about. Thank you SOOOOO much for making these great videos and your help here.
The Pro 13 has the best battery life of all M1s in most use cases, see the wireless web ratings. Plus a brighter display, better speakers and better microphones than the Air. Also it has fans to prevent over heating that the Air lacks.
it has shitty touch bar and 300 more for just having a fan than the air. air is the way to go, if you want pro then 14 or 16 inch pros. i personally think 16 inch with m1 pro, 32gb ram and 1tb storage is the best option.
If you're going to get a M1 Pro with 32GB you might as well spend a little more and get the M1 Max version instead since it comes with 32GB plus all the other Max benefits.
But this is where you start getting nickel and dimed. An unbinned 14” M1 Pro with 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD is already $2899. Bump to a BINNED Max and you are now at $3099. We are really starting to creep away from the base model at this point. Add $200 if you want to go with the 16” screen.
I still do not understand why they increased only GPU part on M1 Max. It will be way better to have more CPU cores. Generally Speaking we call it Max, but actually apple only increased GPU. Yes, more memory may help, however if you are not performing GPU based tasks, there is not need for such GPU, however you may need more CPU cores.
That's hard. Depends really (i know that doesn't help too much) I work in IT and one of our senior devs loves his 13 inch m1 macbook air and couldnt be more happy. "Perceived speed" is different to everyone. Ans sometimes enough is enough for the tasks the device is used. If you do more than coding like playing some intensive games here and there or edit videos or encode stuff, AND you don't mind spending extra, go for the Max, else imho the pro is more than enough for IT usage. If you wanna work on some ML projects yourself and train things, you might also consider the Max
Love your videos on these new macBooks. I've been on the fence for a while if one of these would be a useful upgrade for me, but when you showed the power modes, I instantly went "uhhh - 'low power' mode, that's the way to go!!!" ... probably a good indication that my macBook Air M1 base model is sufficient for my needs 🥳.
hey i just got my new 16 m1pro and i noticed some blue blurring while swiping between a dark page and a white colored page. did you notice this issue on your models?
I don't understand. MacBook Air is good only for its base price. After upgrading the price will be even higher, maybe about 1600€. So, in this case, maybe it will be a good idea to buy a 14-inch model. Better screen, better speakers, more screen =D, better camera, more ports ...
You can now get them refurbished or used with big discounts and also with better specs than the base model new and for less. This will likely continue as some people upgrade and trade in their old model for newer ones.
@@bat_daddy6455 well forget about the title,in their review they showed massive battery hit in everyday usage between the max and pro a result that is according to reddit user is consistent with what tom's hardware found.
Yes my experience was anomalous. The verge is correct. I’ve removed the battery section from the video. Max significantly worse battery. I’m doing more tests
My main concern with the M1 Pro is with the unified memory, is 16Gb enough as this will count as RAM and video memory as well? Most Windows laptops with a dedicated GPU will have a separate 6 or 8Gb GPU memory so do we maybe need to go for the 32Gb version not the very base model with 16Gb for photo editing? Thanks for your input!
My exact concern after watching a bunch more videos. I don’t do video at all and my photo work is light, but I still wonder if 32GB will be better in the long run. Every day my laptop price goes up - Started at $2100 USD and now I’m at $2899 for a 14” after a bump of the Processor, Memory, and SSD. LOL
That's what he literally said. He said if you're doing tons of high res video editing, get the M1 Max, otherwise get M1 Pro with 32GB RAM and 1TB storage. 16GB is too little with unified RAM, a lot of Apple fanboys claim otherwise but having Macbook Air I can say that is the case. 16GB fills up quicker with it than on Windows machine with dedicated GPU and yes, its cause on Windows I see my GPU using 1GB to 2GB of VRAM so thats 1-2GB that doesn't need to use system RAM.

It’s was great video. Thanks 🙏
Helped a lot! thanks!
Great stuff, shame you didn't include Davinci Resolve as latest updates are supporting the M1 Pro and Max chips. Thanks though, great comparison.
@1:58 Blur out the serial number? No?
Great video! Thank you for the walkthrough!
Great comparison! The premiere test really helped me to choose which one to get !
Great review. Which one you recommend for a computer science student.
thanks! this is the exact test I need.! decision made!
Can you please test the battery of the M1 Pro vs M1 Max on the 14 inch?
Did you notice much difference in the fan noise? I've heard the Max fans kick in a lot more and are much louder. I'll be going for the 32Gb of ram but can't decide between the Pro or the Max.
I am in the same situation, the extra noise of the Max would make me go for the Pro 32Gb instead of the Max 32Gb. But I am not sure how much is the noise difference.
@@PabloMandado From other vids I've seen the 16" version handles the heat better so the fan noise isn't that noticeable with the Max. The 14" with the max does get pretty loud though.
Easily the best comparison video. Thank you!
Im planing buy m1 pro 10core with 32ram, is a good choice ?
Great analysis
Nice to see love a genuine recommendation that these are not ment for everyday use 🙂
Thank you!!!! The best review yet that did it right by using the M1 16gb version!
Also when you jump from the pro to max the memory speed doubles as well. Great comparison as always man, love the channel 👊👊
Which macbook would you recommend for a Engineering student?
EXCELLENT VIDEO
Thank You for sharing this video...
Surely... a MBP M1 Max can't be that expensive since it's 3 years old... Right???
IF I got this one... what specks should I get ?
Extra Ram... etc?
Really the best review on m1, to the point and objective
how about after effect?
Great video! Insightful, brief and concise 🤩
Just the best downright show for my apple decisions, keep up the sterling work 👍🍏
Watching this on my MacBook Pro 2015….. feeling old
The Pro 13 has the best battery life of all M1s in most use cases, see the wireless web ratings.
Why doesn't Apple offer 64GB RAM with M1 Pro chip for us back-end developers?
Great video as always, would u recommend the 14 or 16-inch?
I do both stills and video, all personal. I am looking to get the best. Is MAX will be good for me? I'm coming from the late 2013 MacBook Pro
m1 pro is much better for battery life. The max is only if you seriously need a bit of extra editing power
What is your favourite colour space grey or the silver?
Thank you so much for your perfect comparison.
Thanks Tom for this great review and a very solid point regarding MacBook Air )
The three mac are yours? Or is just loan?
1 loan, 2 bought
Best campaigning video ❤️
I still do not understand why they increased only GPU part on M1 Max. It will be way better to have more CPU cores. Generally Speaking we call it Max, but actually apple only increased GPU. Yes, more memory may help, however if you are not performing GPU based tasks, there is not need for such GPU, however you may need more CPU cores.
Do you think the MacBook Pro M1 MAX is worth it? Is it future proof in comparison to what is potentially coming next year?
What monitor is that behind you ? I'm planning one for my new MacBook ...please reply
Is this the M1 Pro with 16 core gpu?
Will it be worth to buy 14” MBP with M1 Max 24 core GPU and 32 GB ram?
This is the best video showcasing the performance differences between models.
Which one do you recommend for an IT Pro, working on System/NW Admin and Coding?
That's hard. Depends really (i know that doesn't help too much)
I work in IT and one of our senior devs loves his 13 inch m1 macbook air and couldnt be more happy.
I would recommend an x86 processor for that.
Love your videos on these new macBooks.
I've been on the fence for a while if one of these would be a useful upgrade for me, but when you showed the power modes, I instantly went "uhhh - 'low power' mode, that's the way to go!!!" ... probably a good indication that my macBook Air M1 base model is sufficient for my needs 🥳.
hey i just got my new 16 m1pro and i noticed some blue blurring while swiping between a dark page and a white colored page. did you notice this issue on your models?
is m1 pro good for big projects in xcode? is it good choice for programmers?
I'm surprised the M1 Pro was only marginally better than the M1 for the Final Cut export. I would've expected it to be closer to 9 minutes or so
Looks to be aligned with the M1 Max having twice the media encoders for h.264 than the M1 and M1 Pro.
Felt weird to me as other UA-camr did comparaison and it was much quicker specially if you use ProRes as the new m1 pro/max are optimized for it.
What mac would you recommend to a programmer who will be using Xcode ?
Awesome video.
I fully agree with your comments
How would you compare these to your dedicated workstation?
Was the fan noise on the max noticeably louder than on the pro? Thanks
This seems to be in stark contrast to the Verge review.
Im kinda confused
The verge has been kinda apple bias like ijustine. I don't really trust their reviews
Ok, thanks for clarifying that. Can't wait for your review.
I'll go for the M1 Pro Max. 😀
hi bro
can I buy MacBook Pro M1 for graphic designer
Definitely High Quality Content! Keep going
LOL
The new macs have extra cores for GPU, like my version has 10 CPU cores and 16 GPU cores
@@pawelgrum5885 what does that have to do with what they’re talking about?
That's what he literally said. He said if you're doing tons of high res video editing, get the M1 Max, otherwise get M1 Pro with 32GB RAM and 1TB storage. 16GB is too little with unified RAM, a lot of Apple fanboys claim otherwise but having Macbook Air I can say that is the case. 16GB fills up quicker with it than on Windows machine with dedicated GPU and yes, its cause on Windows I see my GPU using 1GB to 2GB of VRAM so thats 1-2GB that doesn't need to use system RAM.
3:34 hahaahahahhahah that’s all I needed to know
99% of the people don't need the Max. M1 suffices for 70% of the people. As D2D said, it's just a tool. It's not something to show off at Starbucks.
So the one with M1 Max has the same battery as the 16inch with M1 Pro? You don't agree with The Verge review then?
Can you share what camera you used for shooting UA-cam video. Thanks
Sony A7s iii
