It’s like using the singular they/them has been around for centuries, with its first used in the 1300s!
I was taught in my English grammar classes to use they if you were uncertain of the subject’s gender, and I left school decades ago.
Maybe they’re not just transphobes, maybe they just went to really terrible public schools!
@@cremetangerine82 exactly! using they/them to refer to people isn't new at all. I think it's funny how some people act as if its just this gen Z thing

As someone who speaks Chinese, it’s a genderless language in speech, but written pronouns have gender. However, the gender in the written words was added fairly recently (compared to the timeline of the language itself, but still quite a while ago objectively)-“old Chinese” was truly genderless in both speech and writing. From what I’ve seen, non-binary Chinese people often use either the male written pronoun 他 (the original one back in the genderless days), the one for deities 祂, or the one for non-humans 它 (equivalent to “it”)
damn I wanna use deity pronouns
Using the one for deities sounds fucking raw as hell.
you will refer to me as a GOD
holy hell, that’s so smooth. my class only taught 他 and 她

I find people like this absolutely hilarious to talk to in person. I am a pretty alternative person (I wear spike collars, have dark/short hair, own lots of dark clothes, go by she/they etc.) and the moment someone comes up to me in an attempt to tell me how 'soft' I am and how 'offended' I must get at everything, and how this is 'fatherless behaviour' (mostly middle aged men or teenage boys for some reason do this? idk why), I just go ahead and tell them that I spend most of my time doing the things they do, like fishing, ATV'ing, building things, hell I even work a forge sometimes; all with my dad. That normally shuts them up, because they can't even imagine that I, a small gen Z nonbinary person, does literally everything they do. Just without being a bigoted asshole.

I had a fun moment when talking about camping with an old guy who started to say that my generation was soft, so I asked him if he had a trailer. Dude, it's not that difficult. When my daughter came out to me as trans, I gave her a big hug, told her I love her and I'm proud of her. Then I asked what she prefers to be called, and what her pronouns are. Sure, I messed up a few times but she corrected me and I apologized and made efforts to not let it happen again. Admittedly, I‘m not in the LGBTQ+ „Loop“ and have sometimes a hard time comprehending the whole spectrum of sexuality/gender/pronouns. But I am also a firm believer that each and everyone of us is on their own path to happiness and it is our responsibility to express our needs, wishes and boundaries while also respecting others. If someone tells me „Hey, My name is Robin, but call me Rob“ I call them Rob. if they said „Actually, I prefer Lauren now“ then I call them Lauren and if someone says „please refer to me as They/them“ I do so. I don‘t understand how people keep getting their panties into a bunch over something so seemingly trivial. Just accept people as they are, if you can‘t, move on.
my fav thing is when transphobes try to misgender you but they can't

I like to play dumb with them and try to make them spell out their thinly veild hate. You're gonna be a transphobe to me you better be bold enough to outright say it and I'm still gonna make you uncomfy by pretending I don't understand so you're forced to either explain your "joke" or bugger off entirely
the "kids won't understand" thing is wild to me. my nephew was 3 when I came out, and he's always been the one correcting others when they slip up. kids adapt so easily; like anything else, they just need the basics explained to them and then they can learn the more nuanced aspects of gender over time. like you're not going to prevent a child from learning how to count because they wouldn't understand calculus. such a silly excuse to harass people just trying to live
Kids are one of the MOST accepting group of people ever just because they’re still so young and open minded. Kids can grasp onto so many things and it’s upsetting to see people underestimate them and just play it off as if our gender will confuse them.
If anything it’s better to introduce these things at a young age before they get older and it becomes harder to accept and learn about certain things.
Kids are honestly the best because they haven't lived very long and they know that, so it's pretty easy for them to just be like "yup, I guess that's how the world works."
Reminds me of a non binary person that told their nephew they use they them and the kid said " like a sea slug!"
@@Bionicbutter43 lmaoo that’s so cute
I was a camp counselor this past summer and we had a few nonbinary staff and campers. The kids that hadn’t already been introduced to that concept before picked it up quick and all the kids were really good about correcting themselves or each other if they used the wrong pronouns. The kids already understand better than most adults.
I'm a trans man and pronouns aren't hard for kids to learn, I started transitioning at 13-14 and my little sister (who was 9 at the time) immediately understood that I was "a boy now" and she never misgenders me. She doesn't even act like it's weird she just accepted it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My grandparents always use the excuse “we were born in a different time.” That excuse might be ok if they lived in a bunker for the past 70 years but they haven’t. They’ve seen the world change and actively resisted getting better with it. Racism, homophobic, transphobia, and all sorts of bigotry are alive and well in them.
My grandmother and her friends are Irish women raised Catholic who got married at a young age in the early 60s, and most of them are pro-choice, pro the right to divorce, pro gay marriage etc. I think largely because they themselves were treated so awfully for decades under an oppressive and deeply misogynistic society that they know v well how important freedom and equal treatment is, ya know. A lot of people just choose to remain forever blinkered and uncaring to the plight of anyone but themselves, I guess.
My folks were born in a different time. 1950 and 1952, to be precise. They sometimes mess up my name or pronouns, but they rarely do these days and when they did they made an earnest effort. My mom always says if she can get it, no one her age has any excuse.
As my grandparents liked to put it "We were born in a different time, a different country, with very different values, when we came to America we changed more than we thought possible and thought that'd be it. We're old so give us time to adjust, we thought we'd be dead by age 60." My grandma died at 80 and my grandpa is in his early 80s now. My grandma didn't give 2 shits about anything in the end because "I want all my descendants to have choices about their lives that I never thought about." My grandpa found out in one weekend that one cousin was pregnant her senior year in highschool, a different cousin is gay and I got kicked out at 18. Everyone thought he'd actually have a heart attack and cause a massive shit storm because "being gay is the worst thing someone can be" he ended up just screaming at my mom for kicking me out. My gay cousin brought his 2 boyfriends to a family event, all the family elders just switched their tune to "look how manly he is, he's getting TWO! What a charmer, he knows how to play the field successfully."

However, they're both pronounced as "Tā". So while the spoken word "Tā" is used the same for a woman or man, it's a different character.

I get the no platform part, some people really just don't need to be a public figure on the internet, but the voice? Everyone has one, and should have the right to use it. However that's not the case today, and that wasn't the case 250+ years ago-these people think they're losing the voice because minorities are being seen as people by a younger crowd when in reality _they are_ world leaders. The moment they lose their voice will be when their generation dies out, but unfortunately their ignorance will be echoed by their descendants willingly.

About the whole "changing pronouns day to day" thing, I have a friend who struggled a lot with their gender identity, and for a while did not know if they wanted to be called she/her, they/them or he/him. So whenever we would hang out I would simply ask what pronouns they felt like today, and that was that. No need to complicate it.

tik tok is made for engagement. It doesn't matter if that engagement is fueled by outrage or support. Click on a few things that piss you off and now your fyp is full of it. Engagement from outrage seems to do the most for generating revenue for places like tiktok.
Tiktok is uniquely specific in algorithm to the point of creating extremely deceiving echo chambers. That’s what makes it so much more dangerous for developing toxic/unhealthy (world) views.
I see it in my 13 year old cousin. He has extreme anorexia and tiktok can very much kill him right now. He’s been back in hospital since Christmas because he weighed 80lbs and his blood sugar was so low he went into “diabetic” shock (without having diabetes).
Tiktok feeds his illness and he sees so many other sick kids that he thinks he’s doing it right. Yet my aunt and uncle refuse to take away tiktok for him. It’s a very dangerous tool and many people (especially minors) aren’t equipped to deal with it properly.

Also the fact that he uses the term “normie” instead of “cisgender,” “straight,” or “cishet” is questionable. There are some implications here…
It's funny because he claims that pronouns are hard but not too long before, he was using they/them for that one teacher 😭😭 like it doesn't seem that hard if you're doing it subconsciously 😭(if thats the right word lol)
It’s difficult in the sense that you have to change the way you speak to fit that person, and it changes for every person you interact with, who is a part of the trans community. It’s not hard to refer to one person as they/them (you may slip occasionally but practice makes perfect), but when the community demands the everyday person uses their own special pronoun it makes it seem a bit convoluted. Even if everyone used the same pronouns, the pressure of expectation from the people requesting the use of their pronouns is enough to cause discomfort.
Not just that, but especially on the internet, talking to or about the community and trying not to use he/she pronouns without making you yourself uncomfortable is hard. I’ve attempted multiple times to try and make an arguement truly genderless, but it’s almost impossible with not just the language, but with mostly our entire culture being built around sex and sexuality. Lots of people in the LGBT community are unforgiving, I’ve had my fair share of backlash for sharing my opinion or thought processes. Talking to and about the community is like walking on eggshells, so most choose to avoid the topic entirely.
@@zonyae29047 I don't understand your thinking. Everyone has preferred pronouns, even cis people..it's nothing new and it makes no sense why you're acting like it is lmao. It's really not that hard to call someone their preferred pronoun, cis people get to be called by theirs why can't trans people?
Also, they/them exists for a reason. If you truly want to be "genderless" just use those pronouns. We've been using that since the 14th century, again it's nothing new. No one is having to change how they speak. We've been using they/them to describe people in a singular way for a long time.
@@zonyae29047 All of this just sounds like a you problem lol.
@@fallenbee I understand your viewpoint. I guess it all comes down to personal preference. Just like people prefer to be referred to using specific pronouns, some people prefer to not use those pronouns. There are just people that wont use them, and it’s up to you to decide if you want to keep them in your life or not. Nobody will accept 100% of you, so I see it as being incorrect to get up and arms about something that has little bearing to who you are.
I guess I’m not the right person to have this conversation with, since I never cared to get into a big hoopla about me being called the wrong gender. Neither have I been around anyone who has. I also have not gone through the struggles LGBTQ people have, so that alone disqualifies my opinion entirely to most people. I’m going to back out of this comment thread before someone feels the need to call me a transphobe. Good day.

I once met a guy during my first semester of college. He worked as the technician for the theater. My second semester I saw her dressed in women's clothes, and wasn't sure if she had transitioned over the break or just got into cross dressing. I didn't feel I was close enough with her to just walk up randomly and just start asking those personal questions. During my theater class, we went to the theater during the set up for a play. While my teacher was telling me who had painted the floor of the stage, I said "Wow, he did a really good job" and all I hear is the speaker turn on, and I hear "Yes she did". It was short, sweet, not rude, and clarified my confusion. As long as you're willing to listen to people, you'll know what they prefer to be addressed by.
Dude really said "Oh yeah? You put a pride flag on your desk so everyone feels more comfortable in your class? Well what if saying you're not homophobic makes one of your straight kids uncomfy? Huh? Ever think of that?"
As a genderfluid person i have now decided that I will no longer being going by all pronons simply to piss off this man. No no no, my pronouns are scheduled now. Based off the weather, day of the week, and what the hell time and other random shit too.
• mondays are very much he/him because Garfield hates Mondays and so do I so I'll be going by he/him in honer of Garfield
• tuesdays we need to get that start of the week energy happy brain juices going so I'm gonna say They/They and any neo pronouns
• now Wednesdays we'll be doing a nice ol he/she/it just to add a bit of midweek spice
• tursdays will be she/her because it's a tursday
•fridays he/him/she we add the focus on the he him to make sure we're safe if we go out
• Saturdays as we all know are "for the boys" so in honer of that she/they
• Sundays will be any neo pronouns but sprinkle in a but of he/they
Now these rules apply always unless the following apply:
•cool fall evening thats not to cold not to warm and I generally nice will be she/her in honer of pumpkin spice latte girls
• walking in the forest while listening to music is an automatic it/they
• summer afternoons are he/him + any neo
• any fancy event is she/he
• walking home alone is he/him
• after school events are she/her Unless my mother is there than it's he/him
• after killing my husband I'll be going by she/they
• all family events will be all pronons all at once
• when I wake up before sunrise they/them
•on my birthday She/her till 12 than it's he/him
All of the is a joke but what if it wasn't?
“walking in the forest while listening to music is an automatic it/they”
i could not agree more, this is incredibly Gender™️, thank you
Mondays are a very he/him kind of day, but not in a bad way. I just associate it with the colour orange, because Garfield, and for whatever reason I associate he/him with orange as well.

I came out to my entire family when my little sister was 3. She was the first to get my new name down and would continuously correct my parents (who were the least accepting and understanding about it) when they called me by my deadname. So no, kids will understand. Kids are typically 10x more compassionate and understanding than adults.
Yeah like how are trans people any more confusing to kids than anything else? Kids are smart and they’re learning a lotta stuff for the first time, so it’s not like telling them your name and pronouns is any more jarring than telling them another piece of information they don’t know
How old were you if you dont mind me asking?
kids are more accepting because they haven't been around long enough to be taught hatred and bigotry. your 3 year old sister didn't have a reason not to accept you, because at that point she had not yet been taught to see transness as bad or weird. it's just, "oh my sibling has a new name now, ok"
@@emiliew5553 this!! When my nephew learned that I was trans he basically just asked "why didn't you tell me sooner" because he had no implicit bias. he genuinely didn't understand why coming out was that big a deal for me or in general. Kids are taught to hate they don't start that way.

The point of the joke is to draw attention to how uncomfortable it would be for cis people if they had to experience life the way trans people do. As a genderfluid person, the only place I usually tell people my pronouns are changing is on something like discord where ppl can easily look at my status. I’m fine to let people choose whatever they feel fits in real life and they can switch it up if they want to. People are more than welcome to change their pronouns irl, but even if they do, it’s not every day consistently. As someone whose pronouns change, that’s just not how it works lol.
I unironically feel bad for so many boomers. The world has passed them by and they see their increasing irrelevancy as a personal threat instead of a challenge. So many of them are bitter, can't connect with their children or their children's children, and they're so obviously projecting constantly and refuse to be helped.
I'm 36 and anyone my age or younger than me typically states that the world will be better when they're gone, which is honestly more like tough love than hatred. Regardless, It must hurt a lot of them and most do not have the emotional intelligence to respond productively, simply because of starkly different generational values. Truly, good and happy boomers out there carry one hell of a heavy load.
I'm 35...and I agree with everything you said lol. Millianials have been getting blamed for everything from boomers for a while now, and zoomers are just arriving to the party realizing how bad they are. Honestly, they have made the world so bad wnd refuse to take responsibility for it. They sent us to war, destroy the planet, and are horribly prejudice. I wish they would fade into complete irrelevance and let the young take control
@@ms.bunniesarecute2287 I think it's a bizarre and awesome that we may be the first generation in known history to not only turn our back on our elders (that's common), but to support and put our hope in the younger generation. Millennials sometimes go as far as to weaponize Gen Z against the boomers lol. We are all products of our time, and I think our generation mostly understands that we have the unsavory role of being a highly transitional generation, simply laying the groundwork for the changes we couldn't but wanted so desperately to make. My hope is that by the time Gen Z has children that are in their teens, the long era of the boomer will be as abstract and irrelevant as the Victorian era is to us today.
Had a conversation like this with my bf when talking about expectations in the workplace. They make getting hired a lot more harder than it has to be on the younger generations as well. I remember saying "well at least a lot of them are dying out right now due to the pandemic so hopefully things will change in a few years" then I immediately realized how morbid that sounded and apologized for it. But he pretty much agreed. So many boomers refuse to see things from a different perspective or lack empathy and it hurts the world. It seems like we will only see good change once they are gone. So many people have tried educating them, but none of it sticks. I wish things were different.
I’m a boomer and I agree with you.
I always love your videos! As for Chinese, it is genderless when speaking but not writing, however there is a movement to make it gender neutral in writing again as gendered writing is relatively new in Mandarin (last 100 years) :)
Do you know what it's like for cantonese and other languages put under the "chinese" umbrella?
@@KeithieB As far as I know, Mandarin derivative languages are all the same, they just carry different "accents" or "dialects" which sound a little different.

I seriously hate when people use age as an excuse. It doesn't matter how old you are, either make an effort to keep up and learn or shut the fuck up. Yes being old may cause getting used to this stuff to take longer, but it is zero excuse to just refuse to acknowledge the progression going on. Boomers need to grow up ft.
Some of the better way's i've seen is just acknowledging they are from a different time, and are willing to change, but they need help and need time to process things. But beating them down for being confused even if they are trying is just a shitty move.

I will take your word that this happened.
Does this mean we need to hate trans people? I'm not sure what your point is here. I know other trans people in my life who have that "everyone who is cis hates me" kind of attitude, and I try as much as I can to let them know that I have supportive cis people in my life, and that there are people out there who will be supportive of them. Also, these people often have parents who disowned them, friends who stopped hanging out with them, etc. There's a reason they have issues around cis people. Empathy, come on now. And these are people that would not beat the shit out of someone for any reason. I also want you to know that "down with cis" can often mean "down with cisnormativity," cisnormativity being the idea that being cis is normal and being trans is spooky and weird. That dread bus, assuming it exists because I don't want to be insensitive, is not a common thing. Trans people aren't going around in cabals beating the shit out of cis people. I can't even find a support group for trans people in my area ffs. I think I'd know if people in my own community were gathering on the weekends to assault people for no reason.
