      Just a note, people can certainly compulsively watch porn. There are legitimate changes in brain chemistry that reinforces the behavior. Though, people need to find quality therapists to help them, not this nutball "no-fap" craziness.
      But these are the people incels are being targeted by. There will need to be a much stronger pull coming from the side of medicine and science, which is unfortunately pretty exclusively the Left these days.
      As frustrating as it is to see these pathetic grown men in this material just waving their red flags like they're in a color guard or something, I think we need to remember that the main target is very young.
      It's awful that media so frequently calls black teenage boys "men" and so often calls white young adults "children." I think we should be considering adolescence as longer than we used to, this happens periodically as humanity progresses and the world becomes more complex. There's much more we need to know now to do well in the world today.
      Most people don't think of someone as fully adult until 24 or 25. Too many people are financially unable to become as independent as quickly as with previous generations. Cost of living has so outpaced income for too much of the population, even just in the US.
      I just don't think the Left should allow ourselves to let our justifiable frustration and anger with cishet (mostlywhite) men boil over to the younger subset of that population group. Under 21 or so, people are often such different individuals than who they become once they've had a bit more life experiences, etc. They are also at *such* higher risk for really serious mental health problems that can last their lifetime if not addressed.
      I think it'll be more beneficial to society as a whole, as well as to those young men who are suffering and feeling their pain is being ignored. It doesn't really matter what the real objective truth is about it, it only functionaly matters what those people believe is happening.

      Hi Ethan, generally LOVE your videos- I see you take up for every human and speak against exploitation. The sex industry (from stripping to movies) is exploitation. Alot of individuals never planned to be in the industry, it just happens. It's a dark sad concept. I hope we can all stop feeding the problem someday.

      @@raven-chan2071 They genuinely aren't. Both Ethan and the OP do their best to attack specifically the grift and exploitation in Ethan's case, and the overt display of opposing sexuality at all in the OPs case.
      The opinion is more shaped by the idea that porn addiction and horrible stuff happening in the porn industry are both more systemic issues that some people try to blame on individual failings or the sex workers instead so they can exploit others.
      Porn doesn't make you addicted. Boosts of adrenaline and serotonine combined with an environment and upbringing that deprive a person of healthy outlets do. Porn doesn't exploit people. Bosses in an environment with too few regulations, too much shame and not enough support for sex workers do.
      So we get angry at these systems and environments instead. The addict is innocent.

Not only did it give me the typical shame, it also made me sympathetic to men who used blue balls or other manipulation tactics. I didn't want to be the reason these men turned to sin (I figured my hand was better than porn?) Or even worse addiction. Because let me tell you there was no casual corn watching you either abstained or were addicted. In turn men also began asking for newds in order to get around the corn ban."I'm trying to not be addicted to porn could you send something instead?" I'm very curious if this "course" covers newds from a SO as ok or if they talk about it at all because it's a side effect of these types of scare tactics.

She didn’t have to 100% stop watching porn, she just got a therapist and stopped avoiding reality for hours on end. Much less to do with porn and much more to do with PTSD, an actual mental illness.

    • @butasimpleidiotwizard
      @butasimpleidiotwizard 2 роки тому +202

      The proper psychological term they use is hypersexuality/hypersexual behaviour/compulsive sexual behaviour, it is a real symptom of some mental illnesses but they don't use the term addiction because that would be misleading about what it actually is and how to treat it, it isn't an addiction but it is a kind of coping mechanism for some people, or in bipolar mania and adhd it's caused by lowered impulse control, in which case it's a bit more like an addiction but it isn't considered the same because it involves activities that are normal for humans to do, like how compulsive binge eating isn't called "food addiction" because eating is normal, it's just when you don't feel like you have any control over your intake and it's negatively impacting your health that they consider it a mental health issue. Psychologists are generally careful to avoid the idea that there is any fixed amount of sekual behaviour that could be considered too much, unless they're a bad psychologist they'll usually only be worried about whether or not the individual feels it's too much, and their reasons for feeling that way. If it's just shame they'll address the shame rather than the behaviour, whereas if it's an impulse control issue or a response to trauma then the treatment will focus more on the behaviour as well as addressing the other underlying factors.

I heard that in Judaism the there are six genders in the bible (male, female, trans male, trans female, tumtum, and hermaphrodite/both) but I don't know the views on sexuality. I assumed they were similar to Christian views, seeing how Orthodox Jews can also be very conservative in that regard.

      @@rowancook4369 the 6 genders is actually in the Talmud! sexuality in the Hebrew Bible is generally treated as an aspect of male property and that "properly" channeled sexuality theoretically leads to procreation. But by the time these ideas make it to the time of the Talmud, they got expounded upon really creatively, so that a husband "owes" his wife not just sex X number of times a month based on his job, but that he owes her an orgasm BECAUSE the rabbis believed that that was required to make a child. Some of them even believed that in order to have a male child, the wife had to orgasm FIRST. a lot of stories in the Hebrew Bible revolve around the biblical authors' ideas of "correct" sexual behavior or masculinity, but the Talmud (which has more influence in Judaism) is way more open--to the point where there are a large variety of erotic stories included in it. if you're ever curious, i highly recommend reading "Song of Songs" (or "Song of Solomon"). interpretations of that from early rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity try to frame it as an allegory for the love between God and Israel/God and the Spirit of a person, but this poem does not mention God once and is incredibly sensual. it's very cool because it's almost shocking to reconcile our more general understanding of what we think of as being in the Bible with the blatant eroticism of "Song of Songs."

Since I was there for so long I had to go through the group with lots of different kids… one kid gave a detailed account of his fetishes and it was pretty insane

    This sort of stuff had such a negative impact on me for years. I became a Christian and started going to church at the end of my senior year of high school and went to various campus ministries and churches in college and was always being told that you should only have any physical contact with women if you're dating and planning on marriage and anything beyond kissing isn't allowed until after marriage. Also, you can't watch porn because that means you're a terrible person. Imagine being in your late teens and early 20's when your body is filled with hormones and then being told that any expression of your sexuality is a sin against God. That led to so much anxiety and depression for almost a decade.

Whatever problems the sex addiction was causing would just manifest themselves in a different way because the sex itself isnt the problem. I fully admit I know little about behavioral addictions and my statement is nothing more than just a guess. Haven’t researched the topic enough to judge if its a “thing” or not.

    • @SilverDragonJay

      Its been a while since I took abnormal psych, but yeah I'm pretty sure its considered a part of an addictive personality in general. Some people are just more inclined to grab onto something and not let go, and its usually because there's something else going on since there isn't really a biochemical reason to become addicted to porn (unlike hard drugs, nicotine, caffine, etc).
      If you get addicted to porn or sex, there's either some hang up there that should be addressed (lack of intimacy, trauma, etc), or you're just naturally inclined towards addiction. no-fap people always like to talk about the dopamine hits you get from masturbating, but you get dopamine from lots of things, and we would have died out if it was easy to become addicted to masturbation (you literally need nothing to engage in it after all). Course, the no fap people also like to redefine addiction as "doing something once a day that otherwise doesn't interfere with your functioning", which is very much not the standard of psychology.
      anyway, not a psychologist, but pretty sure you're right on the money with that.

    • @Hi7here
      @Hi7here 2 роки тому +13

      @@SilverDragonJay idk what nofap ppls opinions are, and this Christian nofap whatever thing is definitely unhinged. However Porn addiction is definitely real. I've never heard anyone make the case about masturbation addiction, so I can't speak to it's merit. The main issue with porn is that it's hyper stimulating. People who consume porn frequently become desensitized to sexual acts and attractive characteristics, leading them to discount the appeal of their partner/potential partners as well as normal sex. Sex is a very rewarding activity when done well, and releases dopamine and oxytocin in large amounts, which make you feel good and promote partner bonding. Porn, however, creates much larger spikes of dopamine and can be repeated and elevated for long periods of time with it's relative ease of access. The near infinite novelty of porn content highjacks the reward system of the brain and makes other activities seem dull in comparison.
      Porn addiction can be defined similarly to most other addictions, lacking the chemical dependency trait. People find themselves unable to cease use, even when it begins to cause problems in their life. Some may alter their behavior in order to make more room for porn in their life, and engage in risky behavior doing so. They may choose to forgo spending time with friends or family and instead watch porn. Some people cannot make it one day without watching porn, some, not even a single shift at work. People may hide the true scale of their porn use, or the fact that they consume it all together from their partners.
      I do not deny that some amount of people can watch porn in a healthy and regulated manner. If you and your partner agree that there is space for porn in your relationship, or your consumption of porn is not harming your ability to find a relationship (presuming that is something you would want) and the above condition is met, there is really no issue with using porn in that way.
      Increasingly, people are being exposed to porn at younger and younger ages. Children are modeling their ideas of sex based off of porn and may not actually experience the real thing for many years. For someone who is not equipped to weigh and address the consequences, porn is a dangerous thing.
      I agree that people who have addictions in general are likely to have problems in the other areas of their life: lack of intimacy, loneliness, depression, trauma, etc. Solving those issues has no bearing on the actual addiction besides potentially lessening or removing one of the many motivations to engage in the harmful activity. People often become addicted to something when it becomes the solution to too many problems. If you drink to relieve some social anxiety when you go out sometimes, that can be perfectly fine and healthy. If you drink to cope with your daily anxiety, and destress from work, and avoid emotions, and turn to it when you feel rejected or lonely, and use it to have fun every weekend, addressing any one of those causal issues will not solve the addiction. It is possible that solving all of them will still not cure the addiction.

      That's pretty much all addictions in most cases, doesnt make it less of a problem. Ppl use variety of things as coping mechanisms to escape from their problems and feelings. I do think porn addiction is a thing as someone who personally struggled with it myself. Some ppl watch so much of it that it follows into their regular lives to the point where they see casual situations and ppl as inheritly sexual and get aroused by it. But because corn is such a normal and regular thing by society, no one really takes it seriously nor the problems that arise from it. (It's possible to consume corn in a healthy manner, but many people don't know how or simply don't care)

      @@Hi7here it's not an addiction though, which is why terms like sex addiction and porn addiction are not widely accepted or used by professionals. The medical terms are hypersexuality/hypersexual behaviour, or compulsive sexual behaviour. It's not an addiction because you can't be addicted to natural healthy activities that your body is supposed to do, food is another example of this, compulsive overeating/binge eating are definitely things people do that can be classified as symptoms of an eating disorder, but they aren't addictions because you're supposed to eat food. These issues are always either caused by lowered impulse control, like what's seen in ADHD and bipolar mania, or they're the brain's attempt to cope with or avoid difficult feelings caused by trauma, stress, or poor mental health in general.

Whether the person wants to kick it from a secular perspective or a religious one, there are tons of free apps and programs, and stuff you have to pay for should be no more than $10 a month for a large amount of content or resources. That course looks extremely stupid, but it's important to recognize why the grift works. Most people become Christian, or begin taking faith seriously, in adolescence or early adulthood... the same time in life when sexual desire is strongest. For a lot of people it's also vaguely associated with shame. This philosophy of "sexual purity" gives people an explanation for their shame, and promises a way to deal with it. But they soon discover it doesn't work.
    And let's be clear about the real subject here: it's not p**n, it's masturbation. They don't want to say that, though, because then they would seem even dumber than they already do. But if you're a Christian and a cis male and believe masturbation is wrong, you'll try to stop, and you'll fail. (This is a typical experience, but obviously not all cis men experience this, and others, such as cis women, experience it too.) And this failure is miserable - go no-fap for three days, and it interferes with sleep, in many cases. It's miserable. It feels like it must be an addiction, a deep corruption in your personality and moral fiber, not just normal hormones flooding your system.
    Programs like this promise to cure the addiction - you just have to pay the fee, get inspired, and take it as seriously as going to war.
    That won't work either, but maybe some guys can tell themselves it does, and as for the rest, well at least they paid their fees for 6 months or a year before moving on. The fee is what matters.

Anything that gives you a dopamine rush, or makes you feel good, really. But the key thing is that addiction is usually a symptom of a different mental illness, like depression or PTSD. It's never really about the thing you're addicted to, it's about your desire to feel good controlling your life and altering your decisions. _Anything_ can be addictive in the wrong amounts, not just porn.
