Even a police officer is afraid to react to a gunman, but teachers should overcome their fears and fire guns .... yeah right
Not only that, fire a gun and kill a person that was 99% of the time their former student that they "knew and loved". Imagine how fucked that teacher would be after that. SInce we have no healthcare either, that person has a good chance of being fucked for life.
It's been proven an active shooting situation is highly stressful and traumatizing even for members of the military trained for combat. Their job is to kill people. And they still try to avoid killing if possible, even intentionally missing. And lots of soldiers end up being traumatized by their military service. That's why governments have to demonize the enemy with fearmongering propaganda. And drones are more popular because you don't get to see the dead bodies, it's more like a videogame where you are detached from the actual violence. And Republicans expect teachers to do any better than trained killers?

Security guard doesn't love the children? Back when I was in high school, our security guard was super cool and friendly. He knew a bunch of kids' names and would chat with us during lunch. He probably cared more than the teachers.

Sorry but if you listen to Trump and many others pushing for teachers to have guns, that is exactly what they want the teachers to do. Just listen to how they talk about it and you will see they think the teachers should find the shooter and end the threat. The worst part is that if the police had actually looked into the kid before the shooting, there would have been people yelling that they were disrespecting his 2nd Amendment rights. There needs to come a point where owning a gun is not a right, but a privileged. Driving isn't a right, it's a privilege, but pretty much everybody can do it, if you just take the time to learn and pass the required tests to get your license. It makes sense that owning a gun should at least have the same requirements.
So what you're saying is there needs to be a target test where your goal is to shoot only non-human shaped targets with humanoid targets that you need to avoid hitting and if you accurately hit any of the human targets,you fail?

There’s something most conservatives don’t see in the second amendment that I do. The second amendment says that a well-regulated militia will not be stopped from being formed. WELL-REGULATED MILITIA. There’s nowhere in the second amendment that says you need to be able to buy a gun to shoot for fun.

Also the militia identifies all able bodied citizens 15 to 45 years of age. I also see many liberals don't read the last part of 2nd Amendment. "Shall not be infringed". It’s amazing. For years republicans said they were pro-police and that they have the upmost respect for them. However when it comes down to guns vs cops they choose to defend and stand by their NRA paychecks.
Steve we respect cops for the responsibility they have to deal with. The problems and dangerous situations that we would struggle to do. Same with soldiers.

People are kindof jumping to conclusions about the deputy. It's easy to judge when you're not in the situation. I'm not saying he made the right choice, but police aren't trained to go into situations guns blazing solo like in the movies.

I'm sure it differs from state to state however my father who is a police officer in Indianapolis states that the response to a shooting at a school changed in the last 10ish years. The old protocol stated that you stay outside until backup arrives but that protocol has changed since more times than not there is only a single shooter at these school shootings.
no matter the scenario YOUR STILL A FIRST RESPONDER. your most basic duty is to preserve life. as far as my military police training dealing with active shooters. if backup can't arrive at a reasonable time it is still your duty to enter that building and nuetralize the threat. whether you fail or succeed. you still are a first responder.

The police officer at my high school knew nearly every single student by name and was one of the best role models I have ever had. He interacted with students daily, inspired many, and I am 100% sure would take a bullet for students. He did love us. So while the parkland security guard clearly did not protect students like he was supposed to Trump is wrong is saying that all school police officers or security guards do not love students.
Shane Stan I also had an officer like that in my school. He’d also find some of the trouble kids at lunch or the kids from bad homes and check on them. And not to bust their balls like “staying out of trouble?” No he just genuinely wanted to help people if he could. Top bloke, would want defending my school in the event of a shooting.

Schools are already underfunded as it can be in the U.S., so would the 20% of teachers that have to be licensed gun-owners that President Trump wants have to already have the guns before getting their job or would the school/they have to pay for the guns after they are hired (since he wants to cut education spending)? Furthermore, a majority of school shooters turn out to be former students shooting their schools, so does anybody honestly believe that a teacher who trained/raised all of these kids would have it in them to shoot 1 them later in life and not miss/get shot in the process? Finally, would a teacher who kills a school shooter be guaranteed to not be fired/arrested if they shot/killed another student by accident, and what happens if a current student steals the teachers' gun, thus preventing that teacher from being able to stop that student? There are just too many problems/costs with this plan that make no sense.

Neither more guns (armed teachers!) nor a not enforceable total gun ban would make the US a safer place.
You know what would make the US a safer place? Doing nothing. IF we simply enforced all the current gun laws that are currently on the books, many of the gun deaths would be prevented. Yet, they are not really enforced on many fronts. The issue with creating new laws (which I do slightly favor some of the ones they are considering, like the bump stock ban) is that what makes us think that they will be enforced if we do not enforce the ones we already have?

He can be an amazing leader (not saying he is, because I don't know) and still not control how his officers respond in an extreme life and death situation. I'm surprised Trevor didn't mention the fact that there was a report of a student shot on the football field and that the police officer providing security was following protocol by taking cover and assessing whether there was a shooter still outside. In the time it took him to do so he could not have made it in the building in time anyway.

I love how lawmakers are urging the Governor to break the law. Depending on your viewpoint you may not like the sheriff but he has certainly not violated any of the clearly defined guide lines that allows a Governor to suspend an elected official.

the only time they even thought about having security guards at my school was when a shooting and bomb threat/rumors spread around my school. mind you they found bb guns in a kids locker. and they considered it then, but never actually went with it because money was tight. a year later they redid the whole school. still no security, just two new receptionists.

I'm not an american so I don't really have an agenda in this, but I am curious in what you have to say.
Ah, the Sutherland Springs massacre, a perfect example of a hero civilian with a gun, and an indefensible failure of the background check system to keep guns (and body armor) out of the hands of a bad guy, resulting in 26 deaths. Could have been more if not for a hero civilian. Could have been zero if a background check had picked up a bad discharge.
Common sense gun laws? How about a better background check system that doesn't just okay everyone without a formal crime or misdemeanor or similar to their name? How about a culture where the right to bear arms is not an entitlement you get just for being old enough, but something that you've earned by demonstrating your good character, your knowledge of your obligations under firearms law, and your proficiency with firearms? And if you think "that's too much effort, just give me the gun because it's my God-given right", then I question if you have the discipline to be trusted with that gun, or the selflessness to be the good guy who risks themselves by engaging the bad guy.
There seems to be a lack of appreciation for how many lives are saved by keeping guns out of the hands of bad guys. Consider the recent foiled attack on ACES Alternative High in Washington. After receiving a credible and specific tip-off, the would-be shooter was arrested, and his gun retrieved. Also consider the recent threat made to shoot up El Camino High School in California, foiled by a security guard who overheard it and forwarded it to the police, who then arrested the would-be shooter and his brother, before retrieving their guns.
You're right when you say Willeford was too humble. Former NRA instructor? Doesn't sound like a "good" guy with a gun. Sounds more like one of the best. God may have given him the aptitude, but he put in the effort to train the skills and learn the tactics he would need to succeed that day. The NRA needs to stop pretending that there are enough guys like him to fight for their vision of America, because there aren't.
I said the system failed. I didn't say the law, as written, wasn't sufficient for that particular case.
In the case of Nikolas Cruz, perhaps the law needed more checks before he could be given his gun, although from what I've read, the January 5 tip-off was so graphic that surely whichever organization received it must have been permitted to do _something_, right away, with no further deliberation, to stop Cruz right there and then.

i really want to point out, I don't blame the sheriff. Who in the right mind would run in to a gun fight with a hand gun while the other person has a Automatic Rifle... any one that knows gun know that is simply suicide... it is just one more dead body to add to the pile.. all Cops know this.. if you havn't got the fire power to stop this, secure and protect the one that are safe and call in for reinforcement.
