They were fighting for the things the flag represents, not the flag itself. Those ideals still exist whether there is a flag to represent them or not, and two of those ideals are 'independence' and 'freedom'.
Those people you refer to died to let individuals act in accordance with their beliefs, which is something that you are verbally against right now.
People 'disrespecting' the flag is still not a bigger issue than injustice, and if you think it is, you are being unjust.
Supporting injustice in this way is disrespectful not only to the flag, but also to the basic political ideals on which this country is founded.

Players only started standing and being out on the field during the national anthem after the U.S. Dept of Defense paid the NFL , to make players seem more patriotic. They used to stay in the locker room during the anthem. They only started doing this around 2011.
Not only that, they're not protesting the flag/anthem, they're protesting the killing of unarmed black men by police and other forms of police brutality. This has nothing to do with the flag.

I was a cheerleader in middle school, and every time a player got hurt, we would all take a knee to show respect.

If we're talking abut disrespecting the flag, then maybe we should stop printing it on napkins, paper plates, shirts, bandanas, etc. The rules of the flag prohibit anyone from printing it on stupid stuff that "tarnishes" what it stands for.
