I don't think they can find it client or server side. ACT just reads the logs generated by the game. If they wanted to stop ACT use, they'd have to stop the game from generating logs, but I feel that the server NEEDS those logs as much as ACT does.

@@rasikkom9605 No they can totally detect it, you have to install ACT in your FFXIV folder so it would be a simple thing and within their rights to scan through your installation folder.

@@Spiritchuckpvp I don't know if this really matters, but they can't scan your installation folders directly. The most they can do is integrity checks, which would find that "something" else is in the folders. Since the terms of service do not allow anyone to alter the installation files, you could be punished for that. Each installation generates a key and that key can be checked automatically during the very first server handshake when logging in. This just supports your point even more though. Not only is it possible for them to know, they already know exactly who is using ACT, they just choose to be cool about it. It's a breath of fresh air for sure seeing a dev team care enough to make their decisions based on what's best for us first and not be laser focused on profits only. If you treat your community right you won't have to worry about profit. That will come naturally lol.

Problem is you can try to explain this to some individuals within the raiding community and they will still stick their heads in the sand on the issue. It's a culture problem, not an attitude problem, it will take something radical to force them to change their views and I doubt SE will be willing to take that step. The fact a lot of people in the raiding scene thought the ban of the streamer for criticizing a person's dps on stream was unjustified and agreeing with what he thought should be evident enough. I mean, the only reason people were willing to wipe in coils with Asmongold 20 times on what is considered content that is soloable unsynced at 80 is purely because he is a famous streamer, do you think they would do that just out of the kindness of their hearts? No way; Unless it was a group of really good friends, it would never happen. Most raiders don't care about completing content, they just want everyone else to be on their level, know the fight through watching a video (visual/audio learning *is* a myth) and then complete it as fast as possible so they can get their rewards and log off for the day. It's not as bad in FFXIV as it is in WoW, but it's still really bad. But since raiders make up a tiny portion of the population (the majority of players only do alliance raids and the relic grind) it's not a widespread issue.

I've been playing FF14 for going on 3 months now, and to not have that ticker down in the corner of my screen has actually been so refreshing. I disagree, it's a really really useful tool if you want to get better and do say week 1 savage or ultimate, you can make sure you're pulling your weight and not grieving your team. And raw numbers are the only way to know if you did good or not, unless you have a looot of experience in the game and even then you can be mistaken about your performance, I only look at logs after the fight not while and I get surprisingly mediocre results sometime because I misjudged how much dps some dowtime mechanic costed me. Enjoy the game the way you want, some enjoy big numbers, but it's undeniable that using ACT to improve makes things a LOT easier and allows you to see your mistakes with FFLog replays or xivanalysis that tells you about rotation errors, uptime etc.

For extremes and above though why not as an option but I don't think the devs want 1: this to be part of the game as Yoshida stated and 2: to invest ressources for it that could be used elsewhere. It's up to the community to decide if they want to foster a culture of trying to do your maximum to play correctly because it's fun, as opposed to randomly pressing buttons which doesn't feel as rewarding, or if they accept people not caring about the others and feeling like ppl owe them a carry.

Try to do E11S on content (so before 5.45) with 1 DPS not doing enough, let's say an SAM, since that is a pure DPS that brings nothing but DPS to the table.
Said player doesn't die so he's executing mechanics correctly, but you're wiping to enrage.

@@MarkZeroGaming Ok, so there is an major flaw right here.
How do I know that this SAM isn't doing enough damage, why am I asking it specifically to the SAM and not the other DPSers?
this just screams "I'M USING ACT BUT I'M TRYING MY BEST TO HIDE THE FACT I'M USING IT!"
but this also creates another issue, for starters, what if this SAM isn't from my server? I have to world hop to see how this SAM is performing.
As I also mentioned being able to kill the target dummy means nothing, absolutely nothing it's literally only there to practice your entire rotation after you got it down, you can stand still on it and do just fine why? because it doesn't simulate mechanics.
You can easily hit max DPS on it but then you gotta disengage from said boss meaning your DPS is gonna end up being lower, having high DPS on there doesn't mean you can get high DPS while executing mechanics.
The thing i'm getting at with these specific things is that, why waste my time coaching this SAM in question to be better and maybe cause a few more wipes and hope he/she gets it ... or just kick and replace this person and most likely get an better player.
The game doesn't actually teach you how to properly play a job, the "hall of novice" isn't even accurate anymore "dodge an AOE" ... wow, stellar advice SE.
for tanks it shows that the DPS can tank an mob that just appeared (the final step) this is technically correct, but healers/DPS panic and start running like crazy once they have agro, more often than not they panic.
I'm all for helping players so the skill ceiling can finally be raised instead of continuesly dumbed down every expansion, but the problem becomes when you have to start to invest time into randoms you'll likely never meet again, i'm not saying only a few thousand below what an average SAM would do, I mean dealing 13-14k dps as a SAM, while a SAM can easily hit 23k now, that's just with basic knowledge (I speak from experience as my SAM is not even BiS, I don't main it, yet I can hit 23k quite easily)

For me, it's kind of a weird competitive mindset that I use ACT for - I want to do as much damage as possible, so when I see my name rise the rankings in ACT, I feel accomplished, in almost every dungeon/raid I strive to be the highest on the dps list because it makes me feel accomplished, and if I'm not then I know there's probably something I can do to improve. Never harassed anyone for it, I just make a personal game out of beating the other DPS in damage.
The only thing I've used ACT for in-game is to choose who to give damage buffs too - i.e. Dragon Sight, Astrologian Cards, Dance Partner, Etc. because if I'm giving it to someone who's simply not doing as much damage as someone else I know that the dungeon/raid can go faster and smoother by buffing them instead. I won't make a deal out of it in chat, I'll just switch my primary target for buffs subtly.

I do remember this ole conversation. Most of the time the efficiency is for myself and our raid groups. Am I giving Astro cards, dragoon tethering, or dance partnering the right person? Since these are things that affect your overall damage 'contribution'. Damage is the best mitigation in the game.

  • @itsatentaquil3152

You won't need a meter, you'll know if someone is slacking when you've played the game for quite some time(especially on specific job,not using abilities or mechanics) and will have to tell them in a nice way to fix what they haven't been doing right.
    Offtopic:
Do not consider it as "forced positivity" It's a japanese culture thing if I remember right, they like for everyone to help each other and improve one way or another.
Had about 3-4 people leave in Alliance raid(World of Darkness first boss) while others stayed to help newbies/improve together to learn mechanics and get use to everything that's happening. Eventually after about 15-20 min of wiping they all understood and beat the raid without wipes.

Games lost their charm of discovery and mystery since internet evolved so much.
In old times, when MMORPG only came out. There was little to no such programms. It would be reallly hard to make, find, download, update such things. So players learned everything themselves. You got new trinket? You have to try it out in your regular fights and compare how good it is. Now if you got new trinket - you just run simulation in programm and it tells you how good it is.
I really respect asian market for not allowing such 3rd party tools. The best example is monster hunter world. Where capcom dont reveal almost any information about the game mechanics to the players. Not even monster health. I think more games should block such tools, so players can experience it and discover everything themselves, and not by looking at programms that playing for them

I can't agree more, I literally hate being new to a game when the games is already +1 year old cause everybody will tell me "Google it, watch a guide, did you checked the forums?". Like Jesus Christ is it that hard to understand that I want to have my OWN experience with a game where I'm new? It's like watching a movie or reading a book but you already know the plot.

    • @edgecutterman

I disagree on some fundamental aspects of the game, in terms of the artificial obscurity in basic game mechanics.
Back when I started the game, it was infinitely infuriating to not know how certain fundamental core game mechanics worked such as DoT ticking, DoT snapshotting, cast bar snapshotting, damage variance, how accuracy worked (Now: How Direct Hit scales), how AoE DoTs behave vs Targetted DoTs, how literally any stats scale in a quantifiable manner, potency scaling, etc.
All things that would have been put clearly in a wiki in any of the other games I play (Generally RTS's, simulation games like Arma or DCS and RPGs of various sorts like CRPGs and ARPGs, and other MMORPGs like Ragnarok Online)
Coupled with the horrendeously vague ToS that FFXIV utilizes, leading to barely anybody giving sprout-me advice on how to get better, I had to either spend hours R&D-ing each and every mechanic like it's a checklist chore, or have (toxic) raiders flame me that I was doing something wrong (which I actually appreciated for a change).
When I play a game, I want to improve my skills as a player. But when the road to that is paved with tedious chores that I have to go through to thorougly understand the game, before I even get to cultivate the skills that I want, it's off-putting when you come from a background of wondrously clear and concise wikis.
I think the only people who are doing any real "discovery" in the traditional MMORPG sense in FFXIV are the folk over at Allagan Studies and the Crafters who race to come up with the best rotation for whatever newest craft has come out.
Some obscurity is nice and can lead to beautiful organic moments of cooperation within the community such as Eureka (as badly designed as that may have been in other aspects), Extreme trials and Savage raids, but the obfuscation becomes artificial when you start to hide the most core of game mechanics that are present within every section of the game, and have a ToS that discourages people from actively helping each other out.

Wrong. This is something I'd read out of someone who literally only started playing games with World of Warcraft. "Third party tools" have been a blight in MMORPGs for a very long time now. People who have played through the age of open world pvp mmorpgs will know this.

I actually disliked the fact that in MHW hunts now show dmg numbers. Although it does help makes you care on efficiency, it does kill tons of other stuff. Like, that a certain build and weapon better than others, it kinda ruin the fun I had in past titles where I just collect them all. In World, I become too sensitive to numbers. It's sad.
I know we can disable it, but not everyone will do and the minmaxing mind does create toxicity. I think the numbers is best kept ONLY in training.

Like what? I’m running for my life and you’re tracking my dps with your stance off?

My dps is where it should be = im doing everything right....when it issnt = i can see it and change things around in my opener/ rota to improve. This is for me and sometimes my friends since they know im parsing anyways, Just be carefull to NEVER tell someone outside of your grp theyr dps and noone should have a problem with ACT. Love the fact that they realy are worried over this becoming a problem if they but it ingame ^^
