Every time you feel depressed or just having a bad day, this song hits you like a beam of light falling from the sky on a dark and rainy day. It's like taking a long hot shower after work, definitely my favorite hit of all time along with Toto - Africa
I have trouble listening to the studio version now, it just doesn’t have the same energy because it is in a sterile studio and there’s no crowd! Thanks for reacting to this one!
You need to check out Gretchen Wilson fronting the rock band Alice In Chains performing live Barracuda (Heart). It truly is a must see. As always, stay happy healthy and safe. Enjoy
I'm a verrrry old g-ma... And I've known this song forever... Was my late husbands favorite... At the moment of that drum drop... he'd crank up the volume... Well... Yes we did crack a few windows in our day... RIP Jimy mine... This one I listened to for you! Thanks for sharing kiddo... it was only my 100 millionth time but I rocked my ass off! Sending best wishes to Mr. Collins and pray for his health.
Let me put it to you this way. Bought the Album 1st day of release Jan 5th, 1981. (That's 42 yrs ago.) Heard this 10,000 times & seen this 1,000 times. It 'still' give me goose bumps. & This is the song that made all your friends in the car shout "STOP, STOP, pull over, here come the drums". That's real power & it has lasted: for decades.
The worst part of watching this video again and again and again, is knowing that I will NEVER get to experience it in person. I think that is what brings me to tears the most. Phil Collins is true GREATNESS
I've been mentioning the same thing. He played with Sting in the UK and all the pianos were out of tune when he got to Philly, but he rocked Against All Odds anyway. Then he joined Led Zeppelin on the drums if I remember correctly. The other thing I keep saying is that he should be Sir Phil Collins already. C'mon King Charles!
No matter your personal taste in music. I think everybody has to acknowledge, that this is one of the best live performances of one of the best songs of all time. Period.
This is why Phil Collins is 1 of only three Music Artist to sell over 100 million albums as a member of a group & as a solo artist. Phil with Genesis, MJ & Jackson5, & Paul McCarthny & the Beatles
It makes me feel really old when I see people hearing this song for the first time. This era had the best music of all times. I loved growing up in the 80's.
Watching people react to this concert that don’t know Phil Collin’s is my new favorite thing in life. They always explode and they always say “I didn’t know he was a drummer”. No dear sweet child Phil Collin’s is THE drummer.
My daughters who weren’t really into Phill bought me tickets for this concert for my birthday. One of my daughters came with me and by the end of this song we were both in tears. She is now a huge Phill Collins fan too now 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
What amazes me about this performance is that Phil has everything timed PERFECTLY. He doesn't rush. He knows exactly how fast he needs to walk from one set of stairs to the other in order to get to his drums at just the right time. Gives me chills every time I see this. And the intense look on his face as he sings the lyrics. You can literally feel the anger and pain he felt when he wrote this.
Excellent reaction I absolutely can NOT imagine actually being there that night watching such an epic iconic performance of one of the most amazing songs by a master ❤
Sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it, Thanks for a genuine video, no false head nodding, not to many interruptions, just concentrating on the music 👍🏻
"How many people could you trick with this song?" --- I've watched a lot of reactors do this video without knowing the song at all and yes, their surprised Pikachu face when he rips into that drum kit is priceless every single time!
The long bearded bassist is Leland Sklar. The best and most revered ever. Another part of this that makes it super cool. The fact that phil gave his body to literally entertain us is sad for me. Bless him.
Beside the word COOL in the dictionary is a pic of Phil Collins just strolling across a stage, singing calmly and holding thousands of people in the palm of his hand- while they’re all holding their breath. Beside the word ELECTRICITY is him walking up the stairs & then a spot hits the drum kit… and EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT’S ABOUT TO HAPPEN!! Icon. Legendary.
You aren't crazy. Iconic song, great performer and singer and EPIC live performance. Loved your reaction! I saw this live. Truly amazing! The whole concert!
Big Phil has made me believe we do have a soul because that has just taken my soul by the scruff of its neck, shook it about and said lige doesnt come much better than that , Aaaaawwwwwwffffkkkknnnnnssssoooommmmeeeeee
Phil Collins, the LEGEND. Love him. His voice is always fantastic no matter what. Makes me so sad he can't play the drums anymore. He loved it too. Everyone did. His love for music never ends. EVER
I was already a huge Genesis fan in the late 70's and early 80's when Phil started his solo career. I still remember when Face Value came out. Everyone was blown away by this song. There was a period of time in the 80's when Phil was releasing solo albums and Genesis albums and they were both blowing up the charts. Add that Peter Gabriel was also blowing up with Sledgehammer during that time. It was a great time to be a Genesis/Gabriel/Collins fan!
Dude, the songs in those days were amazing. So many new styles that were invented back then that are used to this day. Yes they were on the back bones of previous stuff but adapted and refined. I miss it.
The first concert I went to was Genesis Mama. Got to meet Phil back stage a couple years latter. I still have the photo. No one was better live than Genesis. So fortunate I was able to grow up with this awesome music.
The intro was Perfectly orchestrated not only to built up tension and atmosphere, but to indroduce each one of his musicians, one by one!!!! SUPERB!!!!!
I worked in an arena where he performed on tour some years ago. As I walked through the downstairs areas, just past the door to the inside, I heard the solo. Instant goosebumps just from the raw emotion flooding out of the arena. Everyone was cheering, it was actually insane.
Phil is my favorite singer and he is awesome in his concerts...my friends took me for my birthday!! I love all his songs! I really enjoyed watching you loving this song!
No way you can't play air drums with Phil when he does his solo.....im old enough to remember Miami Vice and that song playing while they drove the streets at night.....😉
DROP THE MIC!!!!!!! BEST EVER LIVE PREFORMANCE!!!!! His singing the word "life" for 25 syllables near the end was best breath control ever - especially since he is still playing drums & not missing anything!!!!
and truly a great of the best performers ever. Phil was brilliant in Genesis and incredible music was always produced. He has done some beautiful songs, both solo and with Genesis. You mentioned Fleetwood Mac and I would recommend I am so afraid and Lindsay Buckingham does an awesome guitarist solo.
I love the anticipation he builds. This is THE BEST version of his song ever! You're not crazy, the story is an intense one and he give all the feels! I feel it too. Thanks for this.
One of the best performances ever. That drum drop is amazing. I remember watching him during Live Aid 1985 flying in the Concorde from London to America to perform on two continents in one day. Nobody had ever done before.
So many people in the audience just hyperventilating with anticipation during that intro... 😱 I should also mention the magic: First, there was Gandalf the Grey. Then came Gandalf the White. Now there is...Gandalf the Bassist! 🧙♂
Same !!!!! I seriously cried when he finished playing, singing. No you are NOT crazy ! This was totally EPIC !!!! My favorite all time live performance 💥💥💥💥💥💥. BAMMMMM 💥💥
I saw Phil in concert in the 90's at the prime of his solo career. It's the only concert I've ever been to where the lighting guys in the rafters were DANCING up above the stage... very cool!
I saw Phil Collins Live twice. I've done few things right, but putting half my money away for college and using most of the other half for concerts was awesome. Pink Floyd, Pat Benatar, Aerosmith, U2... Phil was one of the absolute best.
❤❤The legend doing what he does best.❤❤ It's heartbreaking that he will never be able to play the drums ever again. Phil Collins and Genesis will live on forever in the music world.❤ Stay safe
WOW!!!!!!.....Until i stumbled upon this channel...i didn't even know that a "live" performance of this classic existed!!....i wholeheartedly agree with you sir....this...was an epic LIVE performance...for the ages!! Thanks for your reaction to it and for sharing it with us!!
Phil Collins started out as a professional child actor. He then was hired to be the drummer and backing vocalist for the great Progressive Rock band, Genesis, harmonizing with legendary frontman Peter Gabriel. Phil was recognized as one of the world's best drummers, in both Rock and in Jazz / Fusion. He was an inspiration to other great drummers, such as Neil Peart of Rush. By 1981 Phil was conducting two full-time musical careers, as a solo artist and as the drummer and lead singer for Genesis, Peter Gabriel having left in 1975. For about 15 years straight, Phil Collins was the world's most popular musician, and the most in-demand collaborator for other musicians. We couldn't avoid his voice, his drum sound or his face in videos, if we tried. Oh, and he also returned to acting, on and off, to popular and critical praise. By the 1990s, Phil had a third concurrent musical career as composer and performer of big-budget animated Disney musical movies. I personally prefer the music of Genesis when Peter Gabriel was still with them, but Phil, whether one liked his stuff or had had too much of it, deserves recognition as a first-rate artist and a fun, energetic and talented concert performer.
I absolutely agree -- one of the greatest live performances *ever!* I like this better than the studio version, first for the extended atmospheric introduction. Second, it is seeing the personality of Phil himself. And third was his singing the word "life" with 25 syllables near the end. The studio version is great, but this is transcendent.
That live version brings goosebumps and it is very emotional. Loved it. Loved it when it came out (yes I am that old) and to this day. It is one of those songs and performances you will never see again. Today's performers don't have 1/10th the talent of Phil Collins!
I feel exactly the way you've said you feel, 100%!! I love how he wanders around and he gets up to where the drumkit is visible and everyone LOSES THEIR MINDS in excitement.
I don’t think anyone in the crowd thought this was not the most amazing moment in time . I agree the atmosphere will be hard to get . To many phone flying around and nobody present in the moment. Love seeing the reactions to this video x
To see this performance is emotional in many ways. It is a phenomenal performance. The fact that Phil can't perform anymore because of all the years he played drums affected his back and spine causing severe pain to the point he can barely stand. It breaks my heart. Phil Collins will always be one of my favorite performers in music.
Had to come back to this; your iconic review. The emotion Phil can create is incredible. (watch as he walks off the stage and casually bows his little bow is epic) The audience erupts! the unison clapping is awesome. But Collins attention to detail and holding to the original music while bringing an even greater intensity is mind blowing. I saw him with Genesis in1978 and his charisma grabbed me and did not let go. His drum duet with Chester was other worldly. I was completely unprepared for his presence on stage and I feel fortunate to have witnessed it. Best concert of my life.
The studio version of this song is right up there with my all time favourite sings, but this live version takes it to a place I did not even believe was possible. He absolutely knocks it out of the park. The vocals, the arrangement, the band, and of course that drum solo. Absolute perfection. Mind blowing. If I had never heard it, I would not believe it.
This was like nothing I have ever seen!
