As we men of culture know, it is our sworn duty to beat the hell out whatever inanimate object is nearest to us when this comes on. And people around should know and nod in respect when they see some 50-year-old dude giving his wheel a good trashing while driving or waiting for the green lights. This is the song we are responding to - via a sacred ritual we have followed for 40 years now.

Still do it at 70. It is our scared duty to beat the hell out of steering wheel or whatever when the drumming starts. Used to work as bus driver in public transport. Was a set of traffic lights and a car pulled up and this this was playing just as the car pulled up the drumming started and I beat the hell out of steering wheel got some funny looks from passengers.

A great reaction from you, I've been a massive Phil Collins fan for years. He's saying 'Hold on' not Oh Lord btw (that's the British accent for you). I heard he wrote the song shortly after his break up from his wife too but was also led to believe it's about him seeing someone walk away from someone drowning/in trouble and he is singing to the person who walked away. I guess it's open to interpretation and what people want to hear in a song.

@@kp3369 I appreciate the feedback, although, when double checking with the original lyrics by Phil Collins himself, they are saying Oh Lord??? So I am not certain if you are correct.......here are the lyrics:
In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins)
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord
And I've been waiting for this moment, for all my life, oh, lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord, oh, lord
Well, if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend
But I don't know if you know who I am
Well, I was there and I saw what you did
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies
And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh, lord
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh, lord, oh, lord
      Well, I remember, I remember don't worry
      How could I ever forget?
It's the first time, the last time we ever met
But I know the reason why you keep this silence up
      No, you don't fool me
The hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows
It's no stranger to you and me
And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh, lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh, lord, oh, lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh, lord

Helene here from Vegas. First of all, he is saying Oh, Lord. Second of all, in the lyrics at the beginning, he is saying “If I saw that you were drowning, I would not lend a hand.” Phil writes about his life. This was written after (or during) a VERY bitter divorce, and the lyrics are full of anger. “But you dont know who I am”. Yes, he is speaking metaphorically there. She never “knew” him. Thirdly, if you ever watched the TV show Miami Vice, Several of Phil’s songs were used in the series, this one most famously. And Fourth, Phil used to be drummer for the hugely successful prog rock Genesis in the mid to late seventies. When the singer, Peter Gabriel left to pursue a solo career, they tried to find a replacement, but none could sing as well as Phil...so he became their vocalist. In the early eighties, Phil launched his solo career and it became one of the most successful “band to solo” careers in music history. Many consider him the “sound of the eighties”. Fifth, Phil also played the drums on Robert Plant’s first two solo albums after the death of Zeppelin, and was extremely helpful to him (according to Plant himself) in getting up to speed about navigating the business side of the music business and running your own band...things that Robert had never had to deal with before.

The song was the first single released from Phil’s first album in 1981. I consider this staging of this live version the best ever. And that’s before you get to the middle of the unique drum fill, an iconic moment in music history

Helene here: The man at the beginning that looks like Gandalf. (ZZ Top) with his eyes closed, is the GREAT, Iconic, legendary bassist Leland Sklar. When asked about that moment, he commented that he just lost himself in the vibe. Touring with Phil Collins and this spectacular group of musicians is one of the highlights of his career. A career that has spanned more than 50 years, studio and touring, and .quite literally thousands of albums and artists...and just about all genres. He has his own UA-cam channel.....it’s one of the best for discovering SO many artists, watching him play his magnificent bass lines and hearing stories of the studio, the music scene and touring throughout the decades. He has a series of videos of him playing along to the songs from a couple of Phil Collins tours. Check it out.

I didn't realize that was Leland Sklar. That man has played on a few dozen of my favorite albums and I've seen him touring with Jackson Browne & Crosby & Nash back in the mid to late 70's. Before the internet most of my info on the artists and bands I liked came from the liner notes on and album and the Rolling Stone magazine. And I remember seeing Leland on so many of the musicians in the liner notes. I live in Nashville and Leland has played on many country artists albums in the 90's. And, of course, much praise to Phil for an amazing performance. I first saw him in Genesis and enjoyed all the players but he's the one that I liked very much. I've enjoyed bands that the drummer was a writer and singer like Don Henley.

Legend has it that Phil and brothers were swimming locally at home in UK. One of his brothers got a stitch in his foot while swimming, got into difficulty. He was saved by brother but that brother died. While all this was happening, a man from their village was witness to this tragedy, as he stood there over looking the beach. The man did nothing to help these kids.
Role on years later, Phil is a star. He hires a private investigater to find the man. Under the pretence of "winning" a ticket to see Phil live in concert. He has spot light right on him as the song is played......He is wailing 'I've been waiting for this moment all my life' at the end meaning that he is sing/crying with pain, grief and anger. Irish artists like Sinead O Connor ' wail' through sincerity of the pain they have suffered. This song is perfection because he lived the experience.
    - greetings from Ireland.

    IMPORTANT
WATCH: Not just the concert footage but also the scene from Miami Vice.
It 'was' supposed to be Collins last tour.
Phil's last concert piece is stunning visually & musically watching him perform. Seeing the massive crowd is a jolt bringing in the love/anticipated emotion as it's his farewell tour.
Sadly, he's had hearing loss & issues with nerves/tendonitis & spinal issues. There's another tour coming out, but he won't be drumming. His son will be doing it for him.
    Second
He started drumming at an early age. He also got into movies & musicals. He attended a Fame like school in England which helped him strengthen his voice.
He got fame being a professional drummer/backup vocalist for the rock group Genesis as others pointed out.
He then went on to do some solo work. This was not the first song, but it became one of his fans popular song he sings.
    Third
The life of a musician can be hard on a marriage. He was married with 2 kids. Collins had been on a long tour & the distance helped erode his marriage. When got home, wife left w/ the kids & was in process of divorcing him. He was depressed, had constant arguments angry with his wife & terribly alone.
He wrote this song in fits of anger/depression & impulsivity. There wasn't a plan or reason to the words it just came out being isolated. The drum solo he kept playing different drum fills on the takes, it was luck of the draw & timing they chose that one. Interesting his ex-wife was not amused of the lyrics feeling uncomfortable he wrote about their private situation making it public.
    Fourth
I've mentioned this in other reactions. This particular song was out prior to the show, but it triggered a strong reaction starting to include current hits in sound tracks for TV/movies that fit the mood.
This song was in the premiere episode of the TV show 'Miami Vice'.
The setup: TV show based out of neon Miami. Atmosphere; wealthy, pretty girls in bikinis, Latin influence, European popular vacation spots & pastel colors. Miami at that time was known for its vicious gangsters, crime/drugs coming in from South & Latin Americas.
We see various mixtures of characters in supporting roles (including James Olmos). It's 2 main leads together were a pairing of an odd couple. Crockett & Tubbs were undercover police in a drug task unit. Crockett's been undercover for a while, is a little loose & reckless. He recently lost a partner. He lives on a houseboat with his pet alligator Elvis. He drives a confiscated black 1972 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona, commonly known as the Ferrari Daytona Spyder. Tubbs is more uptight & more conscientious.
    Scene:
It's around dusk, they've been called to a scene, something happened & someone's been killed/injured & a person's been arrested. Minutes later, they get a phone call from one of their 'connections' to drive to a meeting point to exchange money for drugs. They have no clue if been found out & what to expect at the meeting site.
Crockett gets in to drive the Ferrari, while Tubbs sits in the passenger seat. The top is down. While driving, it turns to night time as the breeze goes through the car. Exception of a few words, they're silently passing busy streets becoming more industrialized & isolated. All the while this song is playing loudly in the background. It sets the tone of unease, suspense & nervousness.
    ua-cam.com/video/-aMCzRj3Syg/v-deo.html
It blew my mind how one song just fit a scene. I used to drive hundreds of miles to go home. I wore this out as I drove through the night. It fit the mood as I was driving through some not nice neighborhoods of the Bronx to get onto I-80. Then hours driving miles in darkness being sometimes the only one on the road.
FYI all singers appeared on episodes of the show:
Phil Collins, Sheena Easton, Glenn Frey, Gene Simmons, Leonard Cohen, Ted Nugent, Little Richie, Barbara Streisand, Frank Zappa, Willie Nelson, James Brown, Miles Davis, The Power Station, Isaac Hayes, Jan Hammer (wrote the Miami Vice theme).

I’ve been a huge fan of Phil’s and Genesis for years..
I wasn’t at this particular concert (Paris), but I did see him at Manchester and Glasgow during the same tour.
The drums that he used actually came up through the floor just before he got to them (you can just about see them moving upwards in the video) I’m not sure which venue it was, but during one concert of the tour, the drums failed to rise up. Phil jumped down into the hole and hit the drums as normal!
