Drummers rarely stand out in songs because the drums are usually just there to keep time, but this is one of the greatest drumming performances of all time. Even more impressive is that it stood out in spite of having no solos.
😊I’m 😊😮😊😮😊😮😊😮😮😮😅😅😊😊
Yes, Terry Williams was on rocket fuel for this one. Killed it
Also in Telegraph Road Terry is superb, just like the keyboardplayer. But you don't hear that on the studio versions. (Very often another drummer does the studioversions, a common thing with lots of bands) That's why I think Dire Straits is live always better.
Now I am waiting for "my troll to react with: Their studioversions are always better" 😉
@@larairina3922 It's not about better or worse. The original (recorded 4ish years earlier) had drummer Pick Withers who had a different style than Terry who was more suitable for stadium sized concerts. Pick was not a session player, he was part of DS and did both studio and live till he quit the band and Terry stepped in. If you ever listen to the isolated drums played by either on this song, you'd know why both had their own place and time on this song. Same song, two different moods. No question both were remarkable in their own ways.
Depends on the genre.
Terry Williams on drums almost steals the show for me. Also a shoutout for the sound engineer who balanced this to perfection and enabled this version to be so popular.
Good point!
We mustn't forget that Mr Knopfler wrote the words and music, arranged and produced, sang and played his guitar as only he can.
Not many can do that.
A masterpiece performed by a genius, no other word for him.
Long may he reign...
The brilliant Mark Knopfler - a genius , and my favorite musician of all time, and across all genres of music. My favorite live track is Tunnel Of LOVE at Wembly, 1985.
...and let's not forget he's playing without a pick, just using his thumb and fingers. I heard recently he's actually left handed too, which (if true) is even more amazing!
@@alankicks788 He does so many different genres, all of them so well…rock, blues, folk, country, zydeco, Celtic, Spanish, his music knows no limits. No other rock musician is as versatile. His music has evolved so much over the years, like a fine wine, it keeps maturing with age. He is the best at collaboration, and seems to bring out the best in people. I believe the albums he did with Dylan are some of Dylan’s best. He is one of a kind. We’ll never see another one like him.
Jenny, You are 100% spot on! Knopfler is not only a genius, he's a frigging magician with that guitar! I feel an exhiliration in my chest and stomach every time I watch this, especially Mark's guitar solo close to the end.
@@jaycorby
Telegraph Road, I keep watching it, its wonderful especially the last minutes 😊
The drummer DRIVES the song.
Terry Williams is absolutely killing it on drums!
In my 40 years following DS and MK, this is, perhaps, THE best Sultans rendition.
I think the version from the Nelson Mandela concert whe.n Clapton played rhythm was better.
If I remember correctly, this concert was the first time the drummer's dad had come to see him play live. MK gave him permission to give it the beans for the night
@@hightower1984 Exactly right!
Terry Williams on drums, ladies and gentlemen
They were one of the biggest bands on the planet in the mid 80s Achieved everything they wanted to do, and went out on top. Brilliant band
I love that!!
You could say they were *The* biggest band in the world at one point.
@@mikedr1549 totally agree and nobody else will
@@mikedr1549 I feel like the Brothers in Arms tour could have gone on forever. They toured for so long, so many dates, so many countries. Sheer insanity. I don’t know how they did it.
Mark was getting tired of how big everything had to be, that he didn’t recognise very many people during tours, and a guitar got stolen
He sung and the guitar responded. That is what makes this song. The guitar is the main character.
This is easily the best live performance by a drum (without a solo) in rock history. This sets the Alchemy live version above all other versions of Sultans of Swing.
Drummer's on fire 💥 I love when Mark turns around with that shitass grin at 4:19 to recognize the fill thrown in! This whole concert was like a religious experience.
💯💯
Terry Williams is immense on the drums.
Drummer made a complete mess of it and it's shockingly overplaying without sensibility , apart from that it's great
@@Mind-your-own-beeswax he totally ruined it by overplaying without sensibility
Ever seen that movie "Soul"? It deals a lot with how creative people get into that zone of "flow", where everything's clicking and you're just dancing with the muse. That grin, to me, is what it looks like when masters are flowing together and making a total bigger than the sum of its parts.
I'm right there on the welling-up thing. I've seen this so many times, and it never fails to bring a tear to my eye. It's just so gloriously human, in the best possible sense of the word, and God knows we don't get to trot-out the positive meanings of that term very often.
Mark Knopfler is an absolute masterclass in tonal control and letting the guitar speak, so much of the sound comes from his hands and not jumping on effects pedals
This is undoubtedly one of the greatest live performances by any band in the history of music! Thanks for reacting!
Totally agree with you Tom
My opinion the final guitar solo is the best live solo of all time
Terry Williams is an amazing drummer and he shows that off to perfection in this performance.
Terry Williams on drums fantastic one of the worlds best rock drummers
Terry on the drums, oh yes, damn he is good. The song it self is a masterpiece
Terry here number zero absolute
Telling by his reaction, he has a GREAT taste in music. Respect 🫡
Wow 🥺😳 Mark Knopfler has such a beautiful chemistry with his guitar. His support band so amazing 😍🤩 Love the guy on drums, piano what a fabulous show and Mark's voice so Cool 😎.
Each person in that group is equal as a top line musician and that is why these fantastic performances look so easy and natural.
I loved seeing your reaction! I am such a Dire Straits fanatic from the first time I heard them. I am so in love with Mark Knopfler, he has otherworldly talent. I have never heard anyone play guitar remotely like him. He is a perfectionist, a master guitarist, poet, lyricist, songwriter, and band leader. I have never heard anyone with a guitar tone like that. His solo stuff is so moving, so calming and healing. His songs are like little history lessons, just incredible. I can’t go a day without listening to him.
pls react to reo brothers of the philippines. they perform this song sultan of swing its unbelievable you see and hear for yourself
I totally agree with your comment and I feel exactly the same
this comment is for Cherry Tree
@@sallypineda4588 going to check it out right now
Golden Heart and Sailing To Philadelphia are incredible albums from Knopfler. Hes a modern day Bard.
This is one of the greatest performances ever from anyone, Mark Knopfler was untouchable during this time, any and every song from the Alchemy concert is fantastic, try Tunnel of Love next.
I'd echo Tunnel of Love. Also Brothers in Arms from the 1993 On The Night performance.
@@cr10001 Yes, that Brothers in Arms performance is amazing.
i've heard this song so many times but it still gives me goosebumps.
One of the best and most uplifting live performances I've ever seen. The part where Mark plays the sadly mournful guitar is beautiful, and genius.
Many guitarists have a "signature" sound but no-one has one quite as distinctive as Mark Knopfler. Love your reactions, they are mint. Subbed.
Terry Williams..One of the Best drummers ever.. Great Rock n Roll !
Mark Knoffler is an absolute GENIUS!
If you enjoyed their ALCAMY TOUR version of Sultans of Swing, you REALLLY need to hear TELEGRAPH ROAD from the same concert with a five minute outro solo by Mark that is STUNNING!😂
In my opinion they are the best ever and nobody will ever be able to follow their brilliant performances. I have seen them live and it was a pure adventure and they did 4 encores. Mark, the lead guitarist, is an absolute musical genius and he is left handed playing a right hand guitar. He is also rated at number 27 from the 100 best guitarist ever. Great reaction and I could tell they blew you away as they do anybody that listens to their music.
I really liked your comment and I think I’m addicted to the music and I always give it that little bit extra
why so low - 27?
How can mark be rated as low as 27 that’s sooo wrong him and David Gilmore my top 1+2 of all time
A 7 year old compiled that top 100 guitarist list they had prince, the edge from u2 and Kurt cobain rated higher than knopfler, NEVER IN I MILLION TRILLION YEARS were they even close to knopflers standard, utter pish that list 👎🏻
This is one of the greatest songs ever. And Mark Knopfler is a tru gitarr heroe. His unik sound is just magic. I remember Direstraits in Greece..I was 20..The Girls where incredible..The beer almost free..and from the speakers everywhere you could hear "Sultans of swing". I was a happy young man..😀
Sounds amazing brother :)
That's one of the greatest live performances I've ever seen. I like how you were so positive and happy watching this. Nice job!!!!
This is one of the greatest songs of my youth (born in the 60's) and it still rocks!
Really does! Still awesome!!
The drummer is so good. I grew up listening to this on the radio. Wasn't hearing that amazing drumming then. Guitar is great but that drum keeping up is fire!!
70s was my awestruck era of raw talent...I will recommend, but it won't be mainstream popular to garnish tons of requests so I stop requesting.
Hi G.O.T there's no shame in being emotional where music is concerned that's what it's supposed to do.
BROTHERS IN ARMS brings me to tears every time.
GREAT REACTION AS ALWAYS.
The whole album is great!
When I was younger, did a lot of long haul driving…. The album was a must play!
Stay safe, stay sane, stay Strong Ukraine 🇺🇦
Me too and that song will always be a classic
I got to witness this live in the early-mid 80's. Valencia in Spain and Perth in Western Australia. Unforgettable.
This is seriously one of my top two live performances ever captured on film. There are two guitar solos. The first one was epic, then… boom the second one knocks you out. The drummer is legend. John Isley on bass (wearing the cool white suit) is the machine who keeps the momentum building. Legendary.
This whole thing is just insanely good, but like you said, Terry Williams' work on the drums is absolutely incredible. The guy is playing is freaking MIND out!
I've read in comments that Terry's father was in the audience and watching him for the first time, that maybe the reason why 😉
Alchemy best live album ever and tunnel of love the best solo
Telegraph Road from Alchemy is even better in my opinion. It builds and builds and the last few minutes are mindblowing. The guitar playing is perfect (goosebump alarm).
Completely agree.
Couldn't agree more
Always prefered studio versions, but telegraph road alchemy live is way better than original
These two. Absolutely mindblowing.
Hear hear
Alchemy is one of, if not the best live album ever recorded.
No overdubs, pure live brilliance
Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.
Amen brother, amen!
Mr too.
Money for nothing is another one I remember!
Completely agree, he is such an amazing guitarist!
@@GOTGames you really need to see the version of Money For Nothing performed at the Music For Montserrat benefit concert held in 1997 at the Royal Albert Hall. Mark Knopfler, Sting, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins on the drums and the members of the orchestra and choir bopping away in the background. Magical.
Also you mentioned Knebworth '90. Money For Nothing was good, but I Think I Love You Too Much with Knopfler and Clapton trading solos in an absolute blues classic is something else.
Yes, there is no song of theirs that do not attract you. This can not be said of any bands or singers in the world. This quality makes them the very best in the world till now.
Wow, What a HUGE difference. The studio version was 5:47 and this live version is 12:29. I always thought that Mark was a great guitarist and this certainly proves it at least to me. This ia a genuine masterpiece. Thanks for reacting to it.
The greatest bands always sound better live
I absolutely love ❤️ watching Mark’ s reaction to the music he enjoys. He really gets into it.
Im so happy you mentioned the Drummer, bc he is crushing it in this one , holy SH.. I mean we all know how absolutely amazing the guitar play is here.. but my God...
Going through some classics!!
I want to recommend you Shreya Ghoshal's Berklee Indian Ensemble "Mannipaaya" live Song. Please react on this song.
Terry Williams on drums is on a different planet on this song!
Fantastic song. Fantastic guitar solo. But the drummer is incredibly good. 😀
I was there when this was filmed at Hammersmith in July 1983!
I was just 18 and it was the second concert I went to (The first was Rolling Stones, Still Life at Wembley) and it was brilliant, but you don't realise how awesome until later in life.
Terry Williams is the best drummer you've never heard of, even Mark and the band were turning to look up at him!
You had, with Mark of course, Hal Lindes on rhythm guitar, John Illsley on Bass with Alan Clarke on Keyboards ably backed up by Tony Mandrel, what a line up it was!
The whole thig was brilliant, we were on the balcony and it was bouncing!
Now watch Telegraph Road.....
Im 52 now and had Lchemy at age 12. I listen/ watch this easily 50 times a year. Btw, i often tear up watching this. Its beyond spiritual. Thanks for yr respinse. Best
Yep, Dire Straits remains my top band of all times! This album (Sultan of Swing) and Making Movies… Mark Knopfler on the guitar is an artist you really want younger people to discover.
Totally agree
the fact he invented his own finger picking style without a pick makes him one of the greats
That is not even close to true, knopfler is amazing sure and he learned that technique from the great Chet Atkins and thousands of guitarists use fingerstyle on electric guitar, and knopfler is one of the greats for sure
Genius - just when you think it cant get any better it does!! So glad I saw them live in the 80s.
Alchemy is the best live album ever .!!...not a bad song on it....knopfler on fire...terry Williams on drums... unreal.!!
This is undoubtely the most spetacular music that I´ve ever heard! I hear Sultans EVERY DAY and this performance is the best of all! This guys were fully energetic at that time and this record was incredible! This is my preferred!
This was the song that "made" the first incarnation of Dire Straits and got them their first sell-titled album in 1978. After some creative differences in the early 80's led to personnel changes, the band developed their style of longer songs with more complex arrangements. This concert was in 1983 and this version of "Sultans of Swing" makes me unable to listen to the studio version anymore, the difference in the drumming in particular.
Completely agree! This replaces the studio version for me
I agree this is THE best version for me as well!!!👍👌
Your grin when the final solo kicks in....flashbacks, mid 90´s, live performance in Bielefeld....I stood in the first row and watched in awe his SoS solo....and he was like completly calm on his face...and I just couldn´t process how something like that is even remotely possible...I die one day happy having experienced that 🙂
Mate your reaction was absolutely sublime. Loved it!!! First time I have ever seen you react. Telegraph Road from the same concert is an a par with this, actually for me it's the greatest rock song ever written and will blow you away. The musicianship of the whole band is showcased. Loved your enthusiasm. Mark Knopfler is an absolute genius!! Best wishes from the UK.
🤘🤘
Agree!!! Best song ever made🎸🎶👌💖
tbh I'd say Brothers in Arms just pips Telegraph Road, the only reason being the the emotion and sentiment of it for me (Ex Services)
@@paulwood5803 Hi Paul
I love the live performance of Brothers in Arms at the Nelson Mandela tribute concert in 1988. Absolutely amazing and played with such emotion. The best anti war song ever written . Take care
This never gets old. The non stop drum rolls fit perfectly with the sustained finger picking rolls. And I love how Knopfler counterbalances the high energy with his voice. Also love the way energy flows up and down and then rises back up to explode
Lyrics/story are great too. Guitar George he knows all the chords.
Thank you SO MUCH for posting this, and with you enjoying it like you did! This IS an awesome performance! Thank you again and again!!!
LEGEND!!!Pure gold!!🔥🔥🔥
Such bands make me realise how much i have grown. First grade of high school I listened to them!lol🤣😂🤣 Great reaction!!!🤟
Really does 😂
Can see the whole history of music!
How he sings to the guitar, and it sings back.... Golden!
Wow, your awesome reaction took me right back to how I felt the first time I saw this incredible video! My eyes still fill with tears almost every time the slow part of Knopfler's solo begins. Really felt like I hit the jackpot when you also did a reaction to The Hu [another favourite of mine] recently too. Your enthusiasm is so infectious. So, new sub!
This song goes to the drummer!!!! Outstanding!!
Drummer amazing too❤
I've always considered this one of the best songs ever! Ever.
The drummer is also killing it.
I love Dire Straits! Actually, Home Free does an amazing version of Brothers in Arms, it´s really beutiful...
Mark is a legend🎸👌
Alchemy best live album ever made. My personal best song ever made Telegraph Road...a masterpiece 😍
I saw them live on the tour after this in a cattle shed in Shepton Mallet ! My very first proper concert, and still my favourite. Just pick literally any song from Alchemy and it'll blow you away.
I’m pretty certain the Shelton Mallet show was the very first one played for the Brothers in Arms tour, amazing experience.
Loved your reaction :) It gave me so much joy to see you enjoy it for the first time, I wish I could go back and enjoy it again for the FIRST TIME....
Brilliant so great to see you enjoy proper musicians. I am so glad I was brought up with the 1980’s music. You young guys listen to some of these bands and realise just how good they were live with no help from backing tapes or trickery. Mark is easily one of the best 👌👌👍😎👏👏👏
I saw the concert live, I was there & being there was an amazing experience. I am a musician who has seen many, many concerts of major artists, & nobody, even Dire Sttraits themselves, could not beat this performance. The absolute off the charts standout were Sultan, Telegraph Rd & Tunnel of Love, please don't ask me to choose a favourite, I would never commit such heresy. At the time of the concert I was studying serious music at the state university. One lecturer commented, music has to be about more than one band, one or one performance, I retorted, Who said it can't? Okay Greenie you got me.
This is one my playlist in my car. Dire Straits is classic! I love the diversity you bring to this channel! 💜
A whole world of music for all of us to explore!!
One second into this performance, you just know you're listening to greatness!
Iam 80 yrs old and really like Marks guitar work . He has some licks he got from Chet Adkins .another guitar great.also Mark is a decent and humble guy.
I'm a 69 year old male - Love your reaction to one of my favourite bands matey - watch more of them PLEASE! Telegraph Road and Romeo & Juliet
One night in London as the orchestra’s Last Exit to Brooklyn drifts into Romeo & Juliet is sublime.
While I basically lived in the Hammersmith Odeon in my late teens, I saw Dire Straits at the Empire Pool, Wembley when Eric Clapton stood in for David Knopfler on rythmn guitar. They played some Clapton songs when he took the lead. This was pre the Mandela Concert that was at Wembley Stadium when Clapton also played with the band.
Nice stuff matey, we were so lucky to grow upon this period of musical excellence Iwas a Brixton academy frequenter, good music times in the UK
The look on your face throughout the solo says everything - absolutely amazing piece of music.
Mark Knopfler is a guitar god! Love this live version
Absolutely brilliant reaction mate well done!! I had the same reaction as you when I first saw this live vid, having known the recorded version my whole life as you said you knew it before hand too. I choose this version over the original now and must watch this at least once a week. Epic reaction.
Love your reaction so naturally excited and brilliant to watch
Just perfect in every way
A big respect to the Sultans of swing, a Band , used to perform in Fun Fair of Glasgow , when Mark , was young
Mark Knopfler is like Dave Gilmour and Steve Rothery. They are not the fastest shredders, but play with a massive amount feeling. Proof - check out Dire Straits' 'Brothers in Arms'. He makes the guitar weep.
thanks for playing this masterpiece mate, glad you enjoyed it, i was at this concert it was at hammersmith odeon over 2 days, terry williams was the drummer. i will send you the dvd , if you havent seen pink floyd comfertably numb live pulse, then its a must see, pulse was the best concert ive ever been to. great reaction cu on your live stream
Think pink Floyd comfortablely numb is a good choice! Would love to see it
Absolutely loved your reaction and yes completely agree the drummer is awesome. Mark knoffler 😍🥰 brilliant guitarist . Il 60 and remember the ‘80s ; dire straights were phenomenal xx
Some of the best 10 minutes on UA-cam. Fantastic musicians across the board, especially Terry Williams killing it on drums and of course Knopfler doing what only he can do.
Man that drummer sure has some stamina! Like the Energizer battery! Just kept going and going and going...
Thank you. One of the best reactions I’ve seen!
Your reaction is priceless--and right on point. It is one of the most spectacular performances of all time. What talent! I react in exactly the same way.
I loved them back in the day! They were so talented!
I got my first Dire Straits album when I was 8 years old. Now I am 49 and my emotions still kick in the same way like back in the days. I heard every song of them thousands of times and will not get tired to listen to them another thousand times. This Alchemy version of "Sultans of swing" is the best they ever played in my opinion. So is "Tunnel of love" which I highly recommend listening to.
Luv your reaction.... you pulled me in.. I was jamming!!!! 😃😃👍
Thanks for this video - I’ve listened to this ever since buying the album in 1984 (and since bought it on CD, DVD, Blu-ray and iTunes…) and every time my reaction is the same energised bolt of happiness, joy and enthusiasm coupled with appreciation and admiration. It’s fantastic and it never ever gets old. Dire Straits are fantastic.
Go on a UA-cam crawl and find live recording from all the way back in 1978 up til the end in the early 90’s, it’s all brilliant.
Oh and do check out that Knebworth performance mentioned in the video, absolutely brilliant and has Eric Clapton on backing guitar…
Awesome group. It's fun to watch you enjoy it. I never saw them in concert. I sure played alot of their music on my many road trips!
Love them...such talented musicians :)
One of my favorite reactors and one of my favorite performances! Im in a happy place watching this with you❤
Your daddy raised you right!!!❤
Had the pleasure to go to a Dire Straits concert in 92... just awesome...
My favorite performance of one of my favorite songs! I never get enough of this clip.
Great reaction! Thanks! It is a sped-up version (Terry the drummer started in very fast. It is told that his dad was in the audience for the first time and he wanted to impress hem. Well he did 🙂) and more improvised version of the studio version. Mark Knopfler is actually a lefty (left handed guitar player), but he play's as a righty is the MASTER OF FINGERPLUGGIN (almost never uses a pick), the MASTER of timing, his timing is spot on AND GODLIKE playing clean af, It isn't even fair. He can fit any note when and where he wants without messing it up while doing it on instinct and propably thinking about what he wants for dinner tomorrow... While playing one of the very best guitar tracks (I'ts actually just one big solo). And remember 70's: no autotuning, no clicking track, no earpieces... Just mastery
Those are the greatest: Hendrix, Gilmour, Mark Knopfler and both Keith Richards and Mick Taylor on this live version: ua-cam.com/video/qmppOF0_DHE/v-deo.htmlsi=E9aXK2GbOMvLLM-I It''s insanity. Jeff Beck is the most underrated guitarist, but I think he shares the list because of his unique playing styles.
A friend of mine just showed me this a couple weeks ago after I showed him BabyMetal - Headbanger.
Great song and great performance!
Loved your reaction. You just witnessed perfection.
I play this song several times a week, sometimes every day (seriously), cause I work out with this song, never have gotten tired of it! At times I still get the chills, one of those times, is when that AWESOME DRUMMER comes up, I believe his name is William. He’s simply amazing, together with Mark!!👌👍❤️🥰
Yes this video is a Classic!!
Terry Williams is the drummer, and yes he is awesome!
