In the early 90's, I got to see Primus open for Rush. Man, what a phenomenal show that was. Three hours of mind blowing musical talent. R.I.P. Neil Peart
Oh man, the Bones tour was my introduction to Primus. My friends and I arrived a little bit late and Primus had already started their set. Tim was doing the cymbal intro for Too Many Puppies as we made our way to our seats, and we sat down just as Les and Larry roared in. I just remember thinking to myself "Ok THIS is different and I LIKE IT." As I'm also a bass player, you can probably imagine why. To think now that I saw two of history's most iconic bassists on the same stage back then...
Top 3 favorite drummers for me (along with Neil and John). I got to hang with Tim when he was playing with the Blue Man Group - early 2000s. Participated in the warm up drum circle with him before the show and sat right next to him during the show! One of the best nights of my life!
Seriously some of the least conventional rock drumming on first few Primus albums. And it meshes with the Bass riffs so well, all his drumming has a tribal, swinging rhythm to it. Love this guy’s playing.
The Antipop album was no disappointment. Brain brought an entirely different style to the band that really complimented the sound that les and larry revealed for that short stint in 97-99.
@@paisteuser06 It was different for sure, which is kind of what Primus does best in general... but I will say, as personal preference, I liked Tim's style better. Just felt like it tied so much of what Larry and Les did together in a much more complete kind of way.
Tim has a simple approach to his role in Primus. Touring with Primus was a great time. I have supported 2 US tours. Whole band is super fun and great to work with.
My band performed in Mesa, AZ at Hollywood Alley where Tim hung out with his Fata Motgana band mates that play in a local band called Fred Green. I also saw him perform at Big Fish Pub in Tempe with his old band Laundry when they toured to support Black Tongue. :)
Frank Beard did this in the late 90s. He was trying these new toms that were toms, but had the length of otobans. I can still remember the pictures in Modern Drummer and couldn't help but think how weird it looked. Years later, I kind of did the same thing by getting a left-hand double pedal so I could move the kick to my left and move everything lower. Gotta say, it save a lot of movement and made moving around the kit a lot easier.
I love that Herb uses a lot of toys and always experimented w super weird setups...I chalk that up to the Rush influence. I don't envy his drum techs but he is a no-nonsense monster on the drums. Underappreciated bc he isn't super flashy but he gets the job done and he's solid af. Same reason I love Chad Smith. Both are extremely dependable gorillas back there.
Killer performance but he should explain how he locks in Rhythmically with the bass line with his left hand ghost notes and the patterns on the bass drum(s)
Back in the 90's I always thought Primus sucked, now that I get it, and can see through curtains I can't get enough of them... There are some good things about getting older, my grandkids think I'm nuts but whatever..... killer drummer..all of them super talented...
Did Tim ever play a kit like that in Primus - with the kick-drums out in East Jesus and West Jesus - or is this a special setup for clinics so everybody can see his feet?
Definitely a huge influence. You'd think Les would be the one, but the brain did it for me. Often over looked, the drums in Primus are sic. Also look up Kenneth Shaulk from Candiria....holy hell...
Worried about my Son Chevy Lloyd as I'm a Single Father hoping he's allowed to safely & rightfully return to me. I want to get him a drum set. I also hope to someday after he's freed from his abductors/abusers be able to get a new place for us where we're not burgerlurised poisoned stalked framed/entrapped hacked spoofed gaslighted & unable to get help preventing crimes against us & where he's able to practice as much & as loudly as he wants!
Tim is an amazing drummer. And the way Primus records, he has to build his parts AFTER Les has already recorded bass… Which is not the traditional way or easy to do. I think him and Ler end up living in the shadows quiet a bit, which is sad because they are both phenomenal and innovative players in their own right.
Interesting set up. I guess everything comes back through the sound system so it doesn't matter that the base drums are so far apart and away from the drummer. Didn't care at all for the trash can lid cymbal to his right but I was wondering what the curly cue on his left would sound like.
Hey nice job...Les's drummer just bailed out...ya might give em a call... Yeah im partial to Jerry the race car driver...it just grabs ya by the boo boo.Am i right????
Well, rumor has it, and I'm not 100% positive about this, but enough people seem to agree with me, well, that is to say they agree with the people who believe the rumor to be true, of which I am one, that Jerry's occupation, or maybe his hobby, as we dont know if he was a professional or not, at least at the time this song was composed, is, or shall I saw was, believed to be a fireman. As for Captain Pierce, well we all know he was a racecar driver, drove a 442 with a Bocephus sticker on it.
This is a music venue in the small town of Vlaardingen in the Netherlands. 'Kroepoek Fabriek': 'Kroepoek' is a tasty Indonesian dish, similar to crisps, pink, because it's made with dried shrimp. 'Fabriek' is Dutch for 'factory'.

R.I.P. Neil Peart
Man, Neil died on my Birthday.
WTF i am jealous of you lol two of the best 3 pieces to ever exist in one night?

I saw that same tour! Epic show!
One of the best drummers of my generation aside from Carey.
One of the most unrecognized and under appreciated drummer! Keep rocking Tim!
Agreed!!!
Literally my favorite drummer (even more than Neil Peart, who is second for me). Copeland 3rd if anybody cared.
For sure my favorite drummer
I swear I've never heard a tighter drum sound. Impecable.
Tim and Danny Carey are just so natural at feeling/playing difficult beats/timing and then making it look so effortless. Love this dude!
2 of my faves! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Thats what I always appreciated about Tim and Primus. They're all SUPER talented and play in such an unorthodox way. Super innovative musicians
I always loved the sound of the bass drums on the album - they sound like an idling RACE CAR
Tim is definitely on my mount Rushmore of drum heroes. True inspiration 🎉
Most underrated drummer of all time 🙌
No doubt!
Solid, no clown antics, no juggling, just doing business--my kind of drummer. A great teacher, too.
Herb is my favorite drummer since 1990
The pop of his snare is so good
I haven't heard this in at least ten years, and I still remember all of the fills. And I'm a guitarist lol
I just had the same experience
One of the best to ever sit behind the kit 🔥
Would kill to have seen a clinic with this guy.....

The blue man group complex rock tour was one of the best concerts I've ever seen ...and of course Primus..which was more of a religious experience.
Tim is so awesome! I love his drumming so much!
One of the top influences on my drumming growing up....
Incredible. Precision and power and flow and ideas. Genius.
Best drummer for PRIMUS
@Rollin' Stoned you mean one of seven...but I would agree he is by far the best Primus drummer.
@Rollin' Stoned Agreed
Brain is betta
Seriously some of the least conventional rock drumming on first few Primus albums. And it meshes with the Bass riffs so well, all his drumming has a tribal, swinging rhythm to it. Love this guy’s playing.
One of the tightest drummers ever. Although his replacement Brian was no slouch either...
The Antipop album was no disappointment. Brain brought an entirely different style to the band that really complimented the sound that les and larry revealed for that short stint in 97-99.

He was a terrific slouch
What he lacks in finesse he makes up with energy
Cool video. Tim Alexander & Stewart Copeland are my 2 fave drummers. ✌🏾
Bloody excellent drummer
One of my favourite drummers
I love the way he set up his kit.
Phenomenal drummer. Makes it look effortless.
My favorite drummer.
Herb: We try not to be predictable.

Primus sucks !!

That pop of the snare.
My favorite drummer for Primus, I love the first albums in which he was playing!
Thanks for posting
That's the oddest drum arrangement I've seen...but a great drummer nonetheless
He can place the toms lower inbetween the bass drums that way.
@@rickardsanchez4602 That makes sense. Economy of motion and all that. I thought it might be to let the clinic attendees see his feet.

Killer performance but he should explain how he locks in Rhythmically with the bass line with his left hand ghost notes and the patterns on the bass drum(s)
How many other Drummers has Primus had now ?? Four or five ? 🤔 🥁 🎶
Great drummer!
Awesome percussionist. Love it . Plus I need to learn how to play that’s song..bitchn beat.

@@NotSkeletor now you get it !!!! Les Claypool don't give a fk if you don't like it !!! nor do I !!!
@@mitch5699 Primus sucks was their tagline. It's highly ironic.

Does he have any instructional dvds?
He said grace notes!! That what they were called when I started drumming. Blessed be Saint Haskell Harr
Interesting drum setup
Primus will miss Tim, but I'm happy he had such a positive impact on the world of drummers
Please tell me I’m not the only one whose confused about his drum set up.
Looks like he's playing the outside pedal on two double bass pedals... seems like an awful waste of space
I’m guessing it lets him get his toms lower.
I think it's so you can see his feet during the clinic as well.
Tim has freakishly long legs
@@chickdrummer88 figured it out.
Just occurred to me his bass drums are set up like that so people can see his feet? Very considerate, or is that standard practice at clinics?
Whoever this guy is, he should try out for Primus.
Im not a drummer. Is there 2 Hi Hats there? One next to snare and one between other cymbals?
Yes - X-hats (fixed in position) on the right

SOOOO awesome
So clean.
He makes drumming look effortless. Insane. Sad to see him retire but hes hurting so he deserves rest.
The cam on that car 🏎️
The different bass drums ( 24”and 20”) would be a tuning nightmare
Why? You want them to be different. Otherwise they would be the same diameter.
Sick dude. 🤘🏻
Legendary

I think him and Ler end up living in the shadows quiet a bit, which is sad because they are both phenomenal and innovative players in their own right.
Les on his own is great, but it's the sum of these three musical eccentrics that makes Primus truly amazing.
I heard the hands beat the whole time he was talking, even before he started playing.
Interesting set up. I guess everything comes back through the sound system so it doesn't matter that the base drums are so far apart and away from the drummer. Didn't care at all for the trash can lid cymbal to his right but I was wondering what the curly cue on his left would sound like.
anyone knows Wich hi hats is he using?
He mainly uses Zildjan K custom dark 13s or 14s
damn I wish I could do that
Hey nice job...Les's drummer just bailed out...ya might give em a call...
Yeah im partial to Jerry the race car driver...it just grabs ya by the boo boo.Am i right????
Why do his bass drums look so far away from each other? Are they tiny?
Jesus that snare sounds incredible...
What was Jerry again??

That snare sound🔥 I think the ride is from the Zildjian Impulse line, but if anyone knows what China this was please share!
Damn this guy’s good. Must be from all that ginseng.
Using 2 slave side pedals? Now that's unpredictable
Dude! Just play it! I don't need a run down, which, i wanted to bail as sonn as i heard it

Jerry's bass drum and fills are so nasty

The kicks seem to be in a strange place, never seen that before.
I just imagine him doing the splits in order to reach the pedals😂
Damn I always thought he did that bass triplet on a single pedal.
This guy should be given serious consideration for replacing himself in primus.
Are those 20x16 bass drums?
His main right kick is a 20 and the other is an 18 so extremely small kicks
Ice bell master
Man you could park a car between his bass drums lol. Such an odd placement.
apparently he's got a medical recommendation to not rise hands too high during an effort. note that toms are really low where bass drums should be.
