Charlie L he's underrated? I think not. He's a legendary drummer. Right up there with Danny. He's not going to be as popular as someone that plays for a more popular band but when folks talk about real talent, polyrhythms, or mechanical tightness this dude is never far from ones tongue.
Lee Schmitz Well heard, I suppose I have a tendency to surround myself with nonpop folks so I didn't know. I went to find a list of "best" rock drummers and.... Fucking hell he's not listed this dude IS vastly underrated...
I love Les Claypool, but when it comes to Primus, it's kind of unfortunate how much he overshadows the other members. At least to those who only think of them as a, "Bass band". And each member actually gets to put their stamp on the songs without the other guys dictating what to do. There is a very distinct difference in drumming styles between Jay Lane, Tim Alexander and Brian Mantia. You can hear it on the respective albums they all played on. Forget what people say about Les being the soul of the band. If Larry LaLonde leaves, their sound is gone
@@wynonasbigbrowndragon6121100% agree. I’ve always thought them three together are one of the most musically tight knit and talented trios of all time. All three of them individually have some serious skills a their instruments that you could compare to any of the greats, but yes sadly I think the mainstream overhypes claypool and Tim and ler get completely overlooked
I noticed the difference from the Brown Album. "Brain" Montoya is a great drummer but he ain't Herb. Fortunately Tim Alexander is back. The "Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People" EP is epic
I remember listening to primus and a music teacher walked up and asked if I liked to be a drummer, I said “no I want to be a bassist like Les claypool” but ever since then I notice how amazing of a drum Tim in and why my teacher noticed the drums first before the bass. Tim has this amazing backbone to the band that when he left it felt weird without that crucial backbone
Travis Barker and every other pop punk drummer wouldn't be anything if it weren't for drummers like Herb and Chad Smith popping out of the 90's and going 'HEY NOTICE US AND OUR FUCKING LOUD CHOPS DESTROYING POP MUSIC' also Barker just doesn't groove with such a slamming weight like Herb.
Never heard him solo before, have not seen Primus live....have to say I love his groove and his ear....puts tons of tone into it, great limb independence, great short rolls....I enjoyed this...
@Christopher MacDonald Absolutely! I love Tim, Matt and Danny, but Jimmy definitely stands apart for his slick jazz rock style! Also, I need to see a Matt Cameron solo! I realize that not all drummers are soloing drummers, but I was always curious.
I love how it's etched in our brains like an etch a sketch. Go to the grocery store and yell out "Every one say Larry!?".. and if a girl peeks around the corner and says.... "your a bastard!", you know she's the one.. ;)
We went to a show in downtown Fresno way back when and a band from the bay area, Laundry, opened the show. It was Herb's band! Herb stole the show. They cut him loose for a bathroom break and I've never seen like it, not before nor afterward. This man is beyond talented.
One of the true originals, he is what every drummer should aspire to be. Pure style, creativity and expression. Everything from the precision to his tuning and the choice of cymbals. You can always tell its the Herb.

dude its crazy now. even seeing a little Eric Gales concert is like 60 bucks. 2 miles away at a small place who thinks they are a premier spot. i would pay big bucks to see NIN but can't think of too much else at the moment. im sure there are some. Jethro Tull would be cool. Rush maybe
We can at least partially thank the fact everyone downloads/streams music these days for that...They don't make nearly the same.money they used to on album sales. So to make up for that and keep the ability to be putting on a solid tour and performance, the cost of concert tickets has gone up
He's a genius. To come up with his parts and play them flawlessly time and again is amazing. Sure someone could copy him, but it came up with them. That is much harder than it seems and he is a master at it.
Herb is one of the most influential drummers for me. He’s the first drummer I heard who made me think “hey, I want to be able to do that.” His groove is second to none.
just superbe... I remember Primus at a Rome (Italy) concert around 1990... one of the best bands then, kind of weird, difficult to label, certainly engaging!
I not only was at the show... I bought the drum kit he's playing(minus all the bells and whistles). I also have the DVD of the night he jammed on what is now MY kit! very cool.
It must be so much fun to play with this level of skill. I can play the geeter like a maniac after about 2 and a half decades but wanted to play the drums originally
If there was ever a drummer in history that I wished I could sound like if I played the drums would be this guy. I am a Bass player but the work of Tim "herb" Alexander on Thonk from Michael Manring is astounding.

3 years after Primus started their band and they came out with their second album sailing the Seas and cheese they were already on tour with rush for the roll the bones tour and that's still the greatest show I've ever been to my two favorite drummers of all time. I mean the guys in Rush had that much respect already for the members of Primus and they saw something in that three piece that you very rarely see in music and that's an amazing Rhythm Section but I'm not going to sit here and let Larry Lalonde not get spoken about because his guitar work is vital to Primus just like Alex lifeson's guitar work is extremely vital to rush and both of them are incredible players but they always get overshadowed by the drummer and the bassist.

Every Tech. drummer like Herb always has a set of Octoban's, tabla ,rotodrums and timpani. just like Danny Carey and Joey Jordison. By the way that is 11/8. I reconized that sticking back when I was in band in Highschool. It's funny how there are somethings that stick with you even after you long forget about them.
@thnk4urself Yeah I can agree with that. Kinda reminds me of Terry Bozzio. He's a firm believer in composition which in some ways drives the drums forward as an instrument capable of melody and rhythm. So much to explore and learn.
One of the most underrated drummers (and band) in history - Primus sux!!!!!
+Charlie L (noobsmoke79) just about to say that. totally underrated

Tim has all the elements of drummers like Bruford, Bozzio, and Peart, but is completely his own drummer.. He's truly a superb drummer.
Herb is probably my all time favorite and a big influence on me as drummer.
Most criminally underrated drummer in history
Herb was the part of Primus that was overlooked a lot because of Claypool, but when he left, I noticed it. Herb is the man.
Jim Bob Duggar claypool appreciated Tim.

dude, travis barker would destroy this fat dude. and also he looks coller with the tattoz
We got a Blink-182 whiny ass fan. Travis is awesome, but Herb is musically more gifted, perhaps not technically but not everything´s about speed.

Gotta love a song named after the time signature! 11/4.
11/8 buddy. 11 eighth notes per measure, not 11 quarter notes!
This is not a drum solo. Its the drum intro and drum composition for the song "Eleven" which is a song that contains eleven beats per measure.
Truth Seeker well, he is drumming "solo".. So..
Jon Valente so that’s why it’s called 11
No that isn't why it's called Eleven, he based the polyrhythm he used around the song title.
Jon Valente The phrasing would make me think that it’s repeating measures of 6 and 5.
Gavin Gmail the only polyrhythm I noticed was a 3/2 on the octobans around the 0:30 mark
Insane timing holy shit
the intro really is top stuff
and steve smith (!!!) admires mr. herbs double bass stuff
How does he get both hi hats bouncing with just one foot? Does he have both of them tied to one pedal?
