- In this brief video, I demonstrate how a 25¢ fix solves what appears on the surface to be a several thousand dollar problem! Of course this is not going to be the case for everyone, but this is an extremely common issue with Honda Fit, and will be a relief to many people
I hear this sound occasionally when accelerating. So glad I found this video. I thought there was something seriously wrong with my Fit. Thanks for the info!
Oh man.... I actually did a valve adjustment on my '09 Fit Sport (235,000 mi.) because of this noise. Didn't go away, thought I goofed on the valve lash, did it again. Same noise. Had half resigned myself to a head (or something) in the near future. Happened upon this video and tried it. Problem solved. Unbelievable. Thank you thank you thank you
This is a public service for Fit owners. Thank you very much for taking the time to create it. I was just at the point of jacking the car up and getting underneath while my wife revved the engine when I searched UA-cam and saw your video. The rev test confirmed my fit has the same problem as yours.
As you noted, the heat shield is held on by three bolts. In my case, the sound was coming from the upper bolt on the drivers side, which of course is the hardest one to get to. The trick was getting the right extension length on my ratchet. In my case I used a 3 inch extension and an elongated 12mm socket to get to the approx 5 inch length that seemed best. I have a wobble socket extension set from Harbor Freight which seemed to work better then the straight extension, if that helps anyone.
As you said the heat shield is held in place with spacers made of steel wool material. In my case there was movement around these spacers on the noisy bolt, whereas there was no movement on the other bolts. I was confused about exactly what you did with the washer you showed. Did you shove it into the steel wool or did you put it above or below the bushing that holds the steel wool?
In my case, it seemed that the trick was going to be to eliminate the movement around the steel wool, so I completely removed the heat shield, and worked quick-set epoxy around the and through the steel wool on the loose one. It set up hard and I reinstalled the heat-shield. It seems to have stopped the rattle but I've only done one test drive. If the rattle comes back I promise to update this post. No update means it's still working.
By the way, one interesting thing I found was that just loosening the bolt and then re-tightening it, stopped the rattle (I tried this first), but I decided I wanted to stop the movement anyway, afraid the rattle would come back. At any rate, I wanted to share all this in case it helps the next person. Thanks again for the video!
Hi Nathan! Thank you so much for this! I certainly hope folks who watch this also read the comments becuase this is a great addition.
I but the washer between the engine block and the washer (with the steel mesh) to more or less put a little tension on the whole shield
Thanks again and don’t forget to subscribe :)
Nathan thaks for the call out, I have a similar issue and not had an opportunity to raise the car yet to completely diagnose the sound, but i can hear the rattle most exclusively from the driver seat so I suspect i may have the same loose bolt on my heatshield being at the worst place/area to reach. I am going try the removing all bolts and retitening step first to see if it eliminates the rattle. If not in will try the epoxy method!
@@JDMPARTSCHI_PizzaGuy I am getting a similar rattle, did you find a solution?
Dude......you save me the biggest Hassel of trying to locate the source of the rattle...thanks.
You’re most welcome :) please don’t forget to like and subscribe! Also share with other FIT owners as it’s a really common issue but seems the video isn’t getting many views
I know this video was posted a while ago but I wanted to thank you for the knowledge. My 2009 Fit was rattling for so long but I did this fix today. Feels like a whole other car without the annoying rattle. Thank you...thank you...THANK YOU!!
Thanks for the Video! I almost changed the compressor due to the rattling sound when the AC was on! This was the culprit!! This video saved a lot of money!! Appreciate it! 👍
Your most welcome! I’m elated to hear that this is helping people! Please subscribe :)
You just save me a lot of time sir. I put a spacer on the bolt that was easiest to get to, and I also loosened and re-tightened every bolt and the issue is now gone. Thanks again for your help!
Where do you find a spacer? Why not just add an extra washer?
@@mg8718 i crafted it from a sanchesium mold
I just gotta repeat it. You saved me time and energy and money. Wish I physically shake your hand. I'm wondering if I did take it to a shop, how many mechanics wouldn't have figured it out since it so totally sounds like it's coming from the engine. I actually had to do all 3 mounting areas. Thank you!!!
Hey I really appreciate it! That’s what this channel is all about :-) hope you are subscribed!
Just wanted to say thanks for making this video explaining this common issue. Wanted to add that it is not only limited to Honda Fit's because I just came across a Civic with the exact the same issue. Passenger side axle heat shield rattle and there is the same wire mesh bushing/washer that has deteriorated causing the rattle. Going to try your fix. Again thanks!!
Thank you! That’s good to know! Always a blessing when it’s simple and not $$$$$. Please subscribe :)

That's the exact noise mines make.
I got a 2007 fit and that noise is annoying 😒. Thanks for your help.
My 07 also makes a similar sound
Really glad it helped! Please subscribe if you have not already
Same here. Mechanic thought it was probably the timing chain and declined to replace it because they're too busy, but I will sure as hell go looking for lose heat shields I didn't know were hidden in there.
Don't know if this my issue or not... My wife just told me about this issue and I'm travelling, but I'm gonna check it out when I get home.
Edit 14 March 2023: My issue turned out to be a loose plastic splash guard under the engine. I had to replace several grommets, nutplates and nuts and all is good. Still... glad you posted this video cause if I hear the rattle again and it isn't the splash guard, I'll check those washers.
This applies to 3rd gens as well! (2015-2022). Except it will rattle at idle on 3rd gens. The shield isn’t bolted the same but has the same style mesh washer tubes. I needed about 4 washers on the lowest bolt right next to the oil pan to space it far enough so it wasn’t ringing against the oil pan.
Do you have footage of how to do this? I have been worried my engine was breaking or something. I know nothing about mecahncis of cars. I am not very satisfied with Honda at this point. I knew it was a buzzy engine but this is ridiculous. I'll definitely go back to Toyota next. But if I can fix this I want too
Yeah!!!!
This video is really interesting 👌..... I was thinking about changing the engine or selling the car, but now I know.
Awesome to hear it helped. Let us know if this was the issue!!! also, please subscribe if you are not already!
My fit sounds so much better thanks man
Great video but this didn't help.I changed alternator/auxilliary belt but unfortunately that also didin't help. The noise is still there. My honda jazz is a 2017 model.
At the dealer now. They say I need the timing chain replaced. I’m not a mechanic. How do I know the difference?😮
What did they quote you? I'm at 188,XXX and I'm worried it's timing chain.
Wow, thanks man. if I heard this on my honda fit I would have gone ahead and replaced vtc actuator. It will help me immensely in future.
You are most welcome! That’s why I thought this video is so important… We own a small dealership and I buy cars at auction, I buy them guaranteed, so I was about ready to call the auction and come and tell them to take this one back, but I swore it was a heat shield… At first I thought I was wrong because none of them were loose, but then I had my wife fluctuating the gas pedal re-creating the sound and I poked everything underneath until I found what I showed in the video! I figured this had to be shared! Please subscribe :-) we do a lot with Hondas
I hope this is the case with mine. Thanks. I think my phone heard it and sent me to this channel. Weird. 😮😅😂
I told the dealer I thought it was the timing belt tensioner. I wonder if they are gonna break the bank or just change this bolt.
Wait did you fix it ?
Show the dealer my video! Doubt a franchise dealer would ever consider “fabricating” a solution, but they will probably change out that holds heat shield assembly. If you’re not subscribed, please consider doing so!
I actually went to it, tighten them up, and the noise went to what ever dimension it came from😂😂😂
Drew thanks so much for making this video. I have the exact same sounds coming from my car. I thought it was the valves that needed to be adjusted (It probably does need it in the coming future haha).
What spacer did you use to fix this rattling sound?
Hey glad it helped! I just used a big washer, like 3/4”. I cut slots into them to I don’t have to take the bolt all the way out to install. Please subscribe :) we love the fit and get them as often as possible
@@DrewGarage yep already done! Thank you! 🙏
@@MrKaystew thank you !
I think I have this in my honda shuttle hybrid
I had a similar nosie on 2 honda jazz's it was the clutch plate springs rattling
Thanks for the video, I have a orange🍊2010 Honda Fit sport Ge with the same problem.
You are welcome I hope it helps! Don’t forget to subscribe :-)
Great advice will check
Thank you for sharing this!
You are most welcome! I hope you are subscribe. That is the whole purpose of the channel ;-) to just share Honda/Toyota tips!
yep that is it thanks for the video
Thank you so much! Glad it helped :-) don’t forget to subscribe!
I have a 2007 Fit Sport and there are other noises mostly when I go over bumps, I replaced the Lower Control Arms on Both sides and it is still there, I tried Rocking the engine with the Emergency Brake on to see if the Motor Mounts Might Be bad but that does not duplicate the Noise, There is a SHELL LIKE under the Car I Call it a Upside Down Turtle Shell and was wondering if that could be the problem, I take Good care Changing My Oil very Timely etc., I have 230.000 Miles on it, A 5 Speed with a New Clutch, I do Drive Hard in My Courier Business.
That’s your exhaust shield. Also, always check sway bark links. Both front wheels off ground, shake the sway bar hard and see if the end links knock
Hello drew, what washer did you put? is it just a normal metal washer? Could I use rubber spacer instead? What I did was retightened and seemed the mesh was flattened.. should that be just fine as well?
What could have happened if i just retightened the bolt? Seems the tube mesh is now flattened..
Hey Drew I have a v6 accord that makes this same noise. What is the general area that I might find this for my car? Or how would I be able to find this location?
Yikes no idea on those. Using a piece of garden hose like a stethoscope helps get the location of the sound
I only ever get a rattle when pulling off at a traffic light or when the airconditioner is on, I wonder if this is the culprit?
Very likely! I thought I needed a motor and was so blessed to find that!
I get a similar rattle when im at 3500+ rpm and it goes away if i rev a little higher. Wondering if this is the issue.
Ever figure it out?
have you tried to just bend that metal a bit away from the body? that might do the easement too...
