1998 Corolla Ride Along Review (8th Gen Better Value Than 9th?!)

In a recent video, I shocked pretty much every subscriber on here by saying I believe that, from a financial standpoint as well as overall cost of ownership, the new best value for someone with only $5000 to spend is actually the ninth generation Corolla instead of the second generation Prius. Toyota Window Fell Off Track?!?

BIGGER & Better Than a Second Gen Prius (and easier to fix)

As any subscriber of this channel would know, I am massively enthusiastic about second generation Toyota Prius. They are easily one of the best and most reliable cars ever made. As a father of four children, and provider of a family of six, I simply could never own a Prius because of logistics. The first generation Highlander hybrid is quite obviously cut from the same cloth. Be sure to subscri...

I Hope This Helps: 2003-2004 Corolla O2 Monitor Won’t Clear!?
There's a thin-walled 22mm O2 sensor socket for sale.
Loved mine for 6 years. Now I got the P0A80 code with signs pointing at the hybrid battery. Think this might be the sign to say good bye. 😔
Ford enigne mount are garbage, mine were bad at 35k miles and I replaced aftermarket hotrace.
Yes it’s a pretty common issue with those focuses. I had one traded in once with only 98,000 miles on it and I was horrified by how the entire inside of the car would vibrate. When the auction came to the dealership to run the car, he said it was normal for focuses and didn’t draw extra attention to it. I was dumbfounded! When I got in the Mazda in this video, I remembered that it is similar to a focus, so that’s the first place I looked when it had a bad vibration. They are pretty awesome cars, otherwise. Minus the whole transmission computer problem
U wouldn’t believe I have a 2nd gen 07 I needed a brake actuator I got used one for $200 got a shop to do it for $150 un freaking believable . But other than that the Prius is great no issues at all use it to deliver packages everyday
348K on my gen 2. Wish I could upload picture for proof.
Nice simple video. Now to get my biggest screwdriver 😂😂😂
Looks like you may have a crack in your plastic ramp. Just saw it for a second or two. I have a similar one. Check it out.
Hi Drew, great video. Question: My CRV 2016 CRV has a 2.4 liter engine. It uses the ATF DW-1 transmission fluid. The manual says to put 2.2 liters of transmission fluid. But when I drain it from the plug 4.8 liters came out. Should i put the 4.8 liters back in or put just 2.2 liters back in like the manual says?
This is a tough one. Here is what I do with transmissions. I make sure when I start that the level is correct. Then I level the car and let it cool as long as I can. Ideally set it up in the morning and execute at the end of the day. So it’s correctly filled, leveled, and cool. Then I drain it and measure what came out. I put that exact same amount back in assuming what came out and the new stuff is the same temperature. Newer sealed transmission’s not the case - way more involved
@ Update: I followed the manual and put in 2.2 liters. I added 300ml extra to 2.5 liters to be sure. And it was perfect on the hot writing!! The manual was right! The previous owner put in 4.8 liters because he must have confused it with the CVT transmission. Because the CVT transmission takes in a lot more. Lesson learnt: Always follow the manual!

I’m glad it worked out! Sometimes cars have incorrect dipsticks. A certain 1989 mustang comes to mind. I drained it into a bucket TWICE to measure. It was a very incorrect dipstick and there was others with the same issue. There are many ways to check just always be sure
@ Lesson learnt is always follow the manual 🙏😀
Ohhh God...! .... May u live a long life, this was such a big headache for me..
lol thank you for that :) glad it helped!
Awesome Drew! Get 'er ready for me! Great pointers, BTW. 😊
Thanks for this! It's my pleasure. Such an amazing car!
My 2008 has 227,000 miles….I bought it 7 years ago with 100,000 miles…Iv’e achieved 55MPG in prime conditions….It still runs very smooth…I should do the plugs and clean the mas airflow as well….But I am very happy with it with no mechanical failures….
I just love it when someone who knows what they are talking about with the classic cars been working on them since I was 14 I am 63 know and never asked till today how to alignment on a 51 fleet line so thanks for the heads up and knowledge
and the 03-09 Matrix
Just bought a used 2005 Toyota Prius hybrid that didn't come with a manual. How do you work the screen for heater?! Cold weather is upon us in my state. Please help! Thanks
Wonderful content, I’m South of Buffalo great to see a relatively local UA-camr.
Run!
Great video. I have an 06 @ 260k miles. Original owner. Your video summarizes most of the repairs and fixers done to my car. I'm in west coast and don't have rust issues. The clear coat is fading though. I'm holding on to it as a reliable beater car. My next project is to replace the HID bulb or maybe replace it with Halogen.
Oh man, I think I just changed the head gasket on my Prius for no reason 😮💨. Oh well, now I don't have to worry about the gasket going bad on me.
And what's a hearter sensor??
Chris.. how can we fix a p0032 and p0038 code for prius 1.8... please help....
I'm a member of the Thumbs-up squad... I give a thumbs up for every video that I like. Because they deserve it.. especially you! 2006 owner here.. I've put on 20K in 6 months... It now had 226K going strong.. I agree... for the price point and what you get.. It is the best used car you can get. The next runner up would be a Toyota Matrix.. 2003-2007 They have all been fantastic, and all were Manual.
My own 2004 Toyota Prius for 20 years and 60.300 miles still good but need new tires and front wheel alignment.
Is there any reason why this couldn't be done an not remove the intake manifold? Reason I ask is because replacing the starter says to basically do the same disassembly.. but you can acutely do the starter replacement 100% just under the car. So thought maybe this could be done just under the car? Any thoughts?
Can't wait to have this delivered, Drew! Been watching this vid almost everyday and showing everyone what I'm getting, Haha! And for anyone looking to buy from Pella Cars/Drew, I definitely recommend! He's a straight forward guy and will go above and beyond for his customers. Super personable and easy to work with! I was only looking for this Type C w/the F package. Been searching for the "right" right hand drive import for a while now. So glad I found this searching the UA-cam!
only downside to these is they rust out like crazy. Made of very thin sheet metal.
I'm having the same issue, the motor rattle when starting early morning. But the coolant is draining quickly. Already had to fill it almost completely two times in one week (you can hear fluid 'slush' around inside the dashboard). And some white smoke. Does this tell you it's most likely the head gasket? If it's the head gasket, this trick of yours won't work in this situation, correct? Thanks for any advice!
I see the tierod adjustments to fix toe in or out- but I can't figure the camber on my 1950 chevy styleline deluxe passenger side is slightly cambered in on top???
How do you fix camber on front-end?
Thanks for the information about the center console. I could get the top section off but didn’t know about the plate where the gearshift handle is. Now I do. Great video. I’ve got to change bulbs behind the dials.
In another month, she will be able to buy a beer!
Any advice on importing one myself?
I'm sorry but a friggin' separate computer for a headlight? Automotive engineers have to be the most evil pricks on the planet. It's a damn headlight FFS. I've got a 2009 with a different rubber boot instead of that cap on the back of your bulb location but it still doesn't want to rotate or allow me to pull it out. Prying, like some say? There's no way to get anything in there to pry with. I think I'm going to have to do this procedure. Others I've seen just pulled all this stuff out so easily and only struggled with the little wire retainer on the bulb. I'm guessing theirs have been removed a few times before and maybe lubed too. Mine won't twist more than just a tiny bit and it's just in there so solid almost like it's glued in place. Maybe I should just go back to '70s or '80s GM cars or trucks and stock parts for them. Everything made today is apparently intended to be disposable. Bulb burns out, oh just buy another car because they never considered you'd ever have to replace that thing.
changed both my HID headlights today on my 2009. Less than an hour total for both by loosening bumper. This was my 2nd change on this car that I bought new. 1st time was a bear to get cover off. Drilled a small hole the first go around and inserted phillips screwdriver to get leverage. didn't need screwdriver this time. Key is to understand that you just need to unscrew a short distance (an inch or so) and then it unlocks the grooves and then you can pull it out. Partly Removing light assembly makes bulb replacement easy.
@@kylegalusha4885 Thanks for the response. I just took it in the next day to the shop I use, they specialize in Prius', and the guy just reached in and popped the boots right off. He struggled a bit with the bulb connection on the driver's side but otherwise it was super quick, FOR HIM. It does help to know how rough you can be and if something will break as it often feels like something is going to break when I have to get rough with it. I expected the bulb connector to have a tab you have to either squeeze or pry to allow it to separate, but to my surprise it just pulls straight off. That was one of my concerns when I was trying to get that unplugged. I've never come across one of those that you didn't have to nearly break a tab with a screwdriver to disengage it. I still have no idea what I was doing wrong regarding the rubber boots. He easily pulled them out and they felt absolutely solid, as I said, when I tried twisting and pulling on the driver's side one. I didn't even get to trying that on the passenger's side. Well, it's over now and I still have some of my sanity in tact. :)
I just subbed. Your videos are good. I'm still a bit on the fence about recommending these cars if they have over 100k miles on them, and it doesn't take long for them to hit that mark. Certainly anything I can afford will have that much on it. I do have a local shop that's cheap and they have a ton of experience on these cars. The downside is they do tend to use a lot of used parts unless you specify you want new. and English is a second language with the boss and he's always swamped, so it's hard to get to talk with him much about the problem and repair options, etc.. I suspect mine has some computer issue and so I can't trust that something is due to the hybrid battery or if it's just trying to charge an already charged battery, and so forth. The MFD screen on the dash displays different things than what I can hear and feel the car doing, such as engine revving to charge the supposedly already charged battery and it going from discharged to charged or vise versa in a few seconds. Yeah, somethings definitely wacko with that. I bought Lithium battery cells but I haven't found anyone locally I trust to change them. I could do it, but I don't trust it's as simple as plug and play, after installation and you just start it up. Something tells me there's more software side stuff to follow, but nobody mentions anything like that. Would you recommend a Gen 2 over a Gen 3, assuming they both have 100k+ miles on them? I do hear the Gen 2's are regarded as tanks and are very popular with Uber and taxi drivers, but maybe the Gen 3 and 4's are too.
I learned after buying mine (2009) that they say "everything starts going to shit after about the 150k mile mark". I'm inclined to agree. I still think they are great until then, but I think it's probably best to sell it after about 130k miles and get something else. If you can get one of these AFTER some of these things have been replaced THAT would be ideal. I've done the Brake Accumulator Pump replacement (had it done that is), and my old hybrid battery still works despite the red triangle of death popping on many times. I got some new lithium cells and nobody around has any experience changing them. Maybe I'll do it myself but nobody on YT mentions a thing about software or steps AFTER the hardware side is done. I expect there's a bit more to follow after you replace those and start it for the first time. Anyway, hope to never have to deal with a fuel pump or tank issue, and the engines are Toyota so hopefully mine will last a long time like they usually do. My old '92 Honda Accord has lasted over 340k miles and Toyotas usually do as well. The only thing I might do differently if I bought another Prius is maybe buy a newer one, but maybe it's better to stick with Gen 2 and pay for the repairs with the money saved on the purchase of the older car, IDK, tough call.
Voting has consequences 🤷🏽♂️ We did it Joe!
What's the part number for the manual window lever type of door panel for the Toyota Corolla? Not the part number for the window lever but the part number for the whole door panel with the hole for the window lever.
Anybody got a parts list with links?
8th gen has independent rear suspension, that's reason enough for me to get one over the 9th gen 🤣
I had 2, one i sold one with 180 k miles, the other i sold it with 240k miles. Used both as a taxi in UK. Not much went wrong with those cars, i would buy another one if i could use as a taxi. In my experience what you need to do: don't drive it hard, it is a very small engine; change the oil every 5, 6k, try not to sit on the hybrid, check the the water pump for leaks, drive it because it is a hybrid, don't leave it for weeks; don't park it on an empty battery; use original disks and pads.
transmission fluid too
My mum still daily deives her 98 corolla she bought new. It has about 160k miles and going strong. Its weird because I learnt to drive in that thing and 20 years later its feels like the same car.
THAT is what toyota quality was. I don’t think 2024 corollas will be around in 2052
9th gen is better since it doesn't have pen on the window
Pen on the window?
Yeah yours has pen on the window whereas my 9th gen doesn't
Do you have a video over viewing the job? I need to replace my oil pump o ring
I don’t - but it’s exposed after the timing bet is off. If you have a 4x4 raise the engine or drop the diff. Pull the rack forward
100k miles, it has 200 more to go!
At least!!!!!!
We all know that the second gen with the cat stolen can still be driven (yes noisy)... But let me ask.... Some states do not have the emissions inspections. South Dakota has no inspections. If I register in SD and the cat goes missing one night, can I just go with a pipe and muffler without that cat.? Can I bypass any warning lights that will be popping up? Would it be legal for a mechanic to do this?
I recently did sway bar links on my 03 Corolla. What a bitch!! I don't have the cut off wheel. And the thump thump noise I have is still there.
I have a 2002 that I bought new and frequently drive a 2005 (gen 9) at work, and I truly prefer the former; it's quieter/smoother riding, more sure-footed taking a turn or in cross winds (gen 9 feels top heavy in comparison) and its engine/transmission are calibrated to have a broader range of torque (gen 9 initially feel peppier, but then is less responsive as the engine revs higher), so gen 8 is more linear in the way it drives.
9th gen seems to have more sensitive throttle and i hate how the doors just swing open
I know what you mean. The older stuff had a more “raw” feel. Even though the newer stuff suffers massively in quality, and the simplicity factor is gone, they got very good at removing virtually all awareness of the mechanicals
the 8th gen rides and handles better because it's got independent rear suspension!
@@busterscrugs True.
Does it have overdrive? Pls post website where you sell cars.
Www.pellacars.com and yes it does :)
Massive oil burner, starts at about 150k miles.
They only really do that if you neglect and stretch out oil changes
Just add more oil lmfao
All Toyota's burn oil, their piston ring design sucks
271K on my 1.8 Vibe , no oil loss. Synthetic blend and a can of Restore every 6 months. Drive 300 + a week.
Not if you've been using synthetic since new like I have been; bought mine new in 2002 and it doesn't burn a drop of oil.
I just bought my first Prius so far so good 3 generation.
