This song is taken from a poem from Samuel Taylor Coleridge. We read it in High School for British Literature and my teacher let me bring in this song and play it in class. If you pay close attention to the lyrics it teaches a moral.

The most fascinating thing to me is how everyone in the music industry regardless of genre has mad respect for Iron Maiden. In the music world they're more legendary than even The Rolling Stones or The Beatles. It's crazy how iconic they are.

I would argue that the "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame" do not have respect for them due to Bruce stating that they would not know Rock & Roll if it hit them in their face (which is supported by some of the dodgy choices the Hall of Fame have made over the years).

These lyrics are inspired by the epic poem of the same name by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, from 1798. it's one of many examples of the great interest in literature held by Iron Maiden's bassist, leader and chief songwriter Steve Harris. The literary works he has written songs about include, but aren't limited to, Joseph Conrad's "The heart of darkness" ("The edge of darkness"), Edgar Allan Poes "Murders in the Rue Morgue", William Golding's "Lord of the flies", Frank Herbert's "Dune" ("To tame a land") and Alistair MacLean's "Where eagles dare". Oh yeah - and Gaston Leroux' "Phantom of the Opera", predating Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical.
When this song was first released in 1984, it was unheard of that a heavy metal band should do a 13 and a half minute epic. But Steve Harris was inspired by early progressive rock like Genesis, so he just decided to do what they did, only in heavy metal style. This in turn inspired many successors to follow in his path. The most famous example, at least in Europe, would be German power metal pioneers Helloween, who released no less than two similarly styled 13 minute epics of their own, both ending up as colossal classics: "Halloween" and "Keeper of the seven keys", in 1987 and 1988 respectively.

I'm going too see Iron Maiden in a few days, 4th of September in Australia 😊 some say the poem was inspired by Captain Cook's expedition too Australia around 1770. The mariner shouldn't have shot the albatross that had guided them out of the pack ice near Antarctica. The bird put a curse on the ship and 200 sailors died of thirst. After the sailors had died the albatross lifted the curse and down came the rain. The mariner lived too tell his story and you should be kind too all of gods creatures. Best live band ever

The poem is by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, when Coleridge wad a boy at school one of his teachers was a former sailor. During class he would regale the boys with stories of the sea, these stories led a young Coleridge in later life to write the Rhyme of the ancient mariner. This song is based on Cooks 3rd.voyage to the Pacific.

I picked up the copy of Coleridge's complete works with in a month of that concert, it was difficult to read at that age, so i looked through to find easier looking ones and worked up to it. so many i learned du to being inspired by this band.

This song was based on the late 18th century poem of the same name by British poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge... it depicted the myth of the Albatross as a 'bird of omen'...
Bassist Steve Harris had written some epic songs for Iron Maiden, but 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' was their most ambitious epic track by 1984 and closed out the 'Powerslave' album... It was played in entirety on their 1984/ '85 tour and again on their 2008 'Flight 666' tour when the 'Powerslave' album and stage set were revisited.
Beyond that record, Iron Maiden would venture into more progressive, longer songs ('Rime of the Ancient Mariner' was 13+ minutes in length) in 1995... 'Sign of the cross' was 11 minutes long... 'For the greater good of God' was 9 min... 'The red and the black' was 13+ min... and their longest track 'Empire of the clouds' was 18 minutes in length 🤘🤘

Welcome to the MAIDEN Family. I saw this exact this tour back in May 2008 in Irvine, CA. The huge treat for the fans was them playing this huge epic of a song. Maiden had not played it live since the World Slavery Tour back in 84/85. I can remember as a 13 year old teen buying the Powerslave record when it was released and listening to it for the first time. The entire record is a masterpiece, but the real gift was getting to the last track of the record which was RotAM. I remember almost ruining my record because when it came to the section of the song (16:47 of your reaction) after the solos and Maiden then goes into the 3 progression thing with the drummer and after the third one a total changeup. When my 13 year old ears heard that changeup I immediately picked the needle up and moved it back. I must of did that like 20 times almost scratching the hell out of my new record, lol. Luckily I did not. Anyways, now that I have aged myself great reaction and "Up the IRONS!" 🤘🤘

I love this reaction between 3 generations. I'm 30+ year fan of Iron Maiden. Since everyone survived Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, please react to Iron Maidens's Empire of the Clouds. It is the only Iron Maiden song to feature Bruce Dickenson playing piano (yes piano). It's based on Europe's Hindenburg moment. It's longer than Rhym and is a true musical rollercoaster. The younger generations need to hear real music by real musicians because gen Z's music is crap. Please remember that most of the band is in their 60's and 70's retiring from the road is a possibility for this great band. Also check out Maiden side projects like Bruce Dickinson's solo work, Steve Harris' British Lion and Adrian Smith (Smith Kotzen) music

Best heavy metal band in the world, so many songs on so many historical subjects more please, Try The Trooper, it's about the charge of the light brigade, The battle of balaclava where the British cavalry unit armed with only swords that was mistakenly orderd to charge Russian artillery who had many cannons, The British charged into a valley on horse back as i said armed only with swords to attack the Russians who were at the top of the valley so of course we had no chance, Honour the charge they made, Honor the light brigade noble 600. 🤘🤘🤘🇬🇧🇺🇸 whatch the actual music video as it has clips from the film The Charge of the Light Brigade, and do a live version from 2018 The legacy of the beast tour.

I was at this show! The whole show was great, but this was definitely the highlight. Y'all should definitely go check them out on their tour later this year if you have the chance, they still rock.

Also, my suggestion for the next pick would be Fear of the Dark from their En Vivo live video/album. That concert is a great cross-section of their career, you could just work your way through it one song at a time and never go wrong. My personal favorite is 2 Minutes 2 Midnight, but Fear of the Dark is the one that really gets the crowd going.

You need to react to other Maiden classics like Run to the Hills, Be quick or be Dead, Number of the Beast, Can I play with Madness, The Trooper, 2 minutes to Midnight, Holy Smoke and TONS More - Iron Maiden Forever Up The Irons 🤘🤘

Dont throw away that In this river request. Its a beautiful song and the video is a tribute to a Dimebag Darrell from Pantera and Damageplan. He was a close friend to BLSs frontman Zakk Wylde but was sadly murdered on stage when he was playing with Damageplan in december 2004.

_"I fear the Greeks even when bearing gifts,"_ written by Virgil in his poem _Aeneid,_ also known as _"Beware of Greeks bearing gifts,"_ comes to mind concerning your gifted necklace.
This song is their masterpiece, in my opinion.
WTH? Something went wrong with Dave's guitar solo just after the interlude?

Steve Harris is a school teacher, many Iron Maiden songs have a way of teaching history, this has been confirmed by Steve Harris.

The ship was trapped without wind to push the sails and the Mariner thought it was the albatross bringing bad luck so the Mariner Killed the albatross (the bird of good omen to sailors) at first his shipmates cried out against what he had done but when the fog cleared and the wind returned they justified the killing therefore making them part of the curse
The Ghost ship came over the line and claimed the lives of the 200 aboard the ship leaving only the Mariner to face the curse
Only when the Mariner repented was he released from the curse and allowed to go home but he was forever bound to tell his story so that others may learn the value of all life...hence the wedding guest
*heavily condensed version 😊😊🤘 Up The Irons!

10:13 Nicko McBrain is the least known member of Iron Maiden. Concert-goers seldom see his face as he buries himself behind a mountain of drums. And believe me, they are not there just for decoration. He plays all of them.
Sometimes he plays shirtless, sometime, as in this case, barefooted, and no one knows if not for the camera.
I guess they don't call him "The Mad" Nicko McBrain for nothing.

    The mariners ship didn't sink.
The curse of the albatross set the mariner free (to carry on the lesson)... by sacrificing the pilot boat, the pilot, and his son.
Appreciate watchung you folks discover the storytelling of Iron maiden.
