What is YOUR filmmaking process? Would love to hear how you guys love to make videos! Hope you enjoy :)
Peter McKinnon will you be in Milwaukee on the 13th??
Peter McKinnon hey peterrrr
Peter McKinnon I just take my iPhone and begin to shoot.
Eyyyyyy!!!!
Peter McKinnon I love having a rough idea and then let my work flow. I will be uploading a similar video in the next few weeks of my work flow - you should check it out🤘 but personally for a travel vlog I always try to stick to start middle and end with the same narrative of getting somewhere or achieving something within the vlog.
I think I speak for everyone when I say thank you for the constant inspiration!!
We love you man!
Nice to see you here! Just watched your drone flyaway video before I watched Peter, glad you found it bro! Yeah, that happens in high winds.
Expedition Jack wow man!! That’s amazing~
Thank you so much
Gotta say though... peter pulled off his story with a lot more dramatic flair lol.
As I said, a constant inspiration!
💯💯💯
fucking ass kisser
Simon Walter You made the effort to make a stupid comment... truly inspirational.
Todays two minute Tuesday is 15 minutes, but totally worth it. The lights setup is amazing! Thank you for sharing this.
The detail given in this one is awesome!
😃
Peter... I am a newly retired/disabled 57 year old looking for my golden hour. I just learned who you are today and I have binged watched a couple hours of your content. Unbelievable!!! TY for being here... lol
I got a Dog, a GoPro, a DJI Phantom, and a old RV and I have learned more today than in the last year of screwing around. I laughed when you posed the question of what is my film making process... LOL, I still have trouble finding the footage I just downloaded never mind the editing...
There is a lot to learn with my new hobby and I'm glad I stumbled onto you...
Lady Dog and Me h
This is one of the most thoughtful comments I've read. I'm also new!
@S Tra ???

People dont realize all the work that goes into a youtube video not to mention mustering about the energy, motivation and COURAGE to be able to film yourself. Takes a lot to get into it. Thanks for shining a light!
Hey Peter! Little time saver for you! If you drag your folders from finder into your project panel, it will automatically create bins with the names of the folders and keep all the files inside their corresponding bin. It’s not much but it will save you 20-30 seconds of bin creation and naming on each project. Great video! Thanks for the insight!
Dunna - Musician, Producer & Vlogger
It's a great tip thanks mate
Christopher Mascarenhas - No Problem!!
Loubna - my pleasure!
i was just gonna say that.
Beat me to it!
9:07 Peter! I think an awesome follow up two minute Tuesday idea would be teaching us how to shoot with the setup you started with after you left your job! One camera, one lens, camera isn't stationary, etc. Maybe like a throwback Thursday. Keep up the great work. -Mark from Canada
This idea is epic!
This is such a good idea!
3 things I thought were extra steps were
1. Creating a folder for each camera, than making another folder in premiere. Rather than dragging the full folder into premiere.
2. Placing an adjustment layer over your clips and color correcting that, instead of copying and pasting the effect to every clip
3. Right clicking the 4K clips and selecting fill frame to adjust the size rather than changing it to 50%
I find these minor things but speeds up the editing process. Informative stuff as always tho!
Bro just let me go to sleep!! Your content is sooooo engaging it's 3:23am and I just keep watching and watching your videos
Adrian Tapia same here 😜
Same here 😂😂
This was weird to see this comment right when it hit 3:23 am for myself
hahaha same here
Adrian Tapia omg it's 3 here as well 😂
Here is my process for my vlogs:
1. Plan something exciting that I feel is worth vlogging.
2. Watch a Peter McKinnon video for inspiration.
3. Plan my intro (what I am going to say, how I will introduce myself and the content for the video).
4. Plan what camera transitions I will use in my shots that I cannot edit in premiere.
5. Because vlogs are spontaneous and one cannot fully plan what will happen in a day, I just do my thing and capture what I feel is interesting.
6. Close the video out.
7. Import everything into premiere and EDIT.
8. Record my music (a capella) transitions I use sometimes on my BOSS RC-300 looper.
9. Make a relevant thumbnail in photoshop and make it cohesive and similar in style to my other thumbnails.
10. Upload and promote on various social media.
Interesting. I like numbers 1-10
Thanks!
For vlogs this is a great workflow! My latest music video took a completely different approach!
#9 "Make the thumbnails look like others"...
Did you learn that from the DSLRGuide guy?
No, but I did pick it up from some other videos, cant remember which.
My filmmaking process:
Step 1 - Have an ideas
Step 2- Procrastinate on the idea for at least two to three months until i give my self the “Don’t let your dreams be dreams” pep talk
Step 3 - shoot and edit the project, realize I over stepped my actual skill
Step 4- Cry
Step 5- upload and share and wait for people to lie to me by telling me it’s good thus giving me pseudo confidence to move on tot the next project.
my god thats too funny!!! This is a similar style to me..
Yasmine and the Aliens. It’s the only way to work!
Same here. My video making process is 4 months min. And they aren't very good. Tissues. Crying. Pep talk. Picking up the cam again.
utseay We just got to keep working until we get to where we need to be. We can make it!
Hahaha you just described me . Watch Thomas Alex Norman’s latest video . He explains this well
Love the way his eyes light up when he talks about his work
Same lol
This is my favorite video of yours to date. I love seeing how much work you put in behind the scenes to create what feels like a spontaneous finished product.
I’m a full time filmmaker because of your channel 🙌🏻🎬 thank you
Trevor McDonald what a surprise I thought you worked in mcdonalds.
*all jokes aside
We all get inspired by Pete mcGod
BoostedLeague haha truth be told I own McDonalds 😎
I thought your brother Ronald run the business :D
YES! Thank you for this. It's ridiculous how much effort you put into the lighting, but that's why you are such a legend. You pay attention to all of the details. Every one of your videos is an inspiration.
I LOVE that you are so creative but also so willing to share. There's nothing competitive in anything you do...it's always about boosting people up, helping others, inspiring others and generally just making people feel good. I always finish watching your videos with a smile on my face and an optimistic feeling. Keep up all the great work.
I think making a successful UA-cam channel is about 5% gear, 5% post, and 90% passion and energy. People just love your energy. It's infectious. And your editing, music, and filming style extends that.
Agree
1-Go to Ghana to build a school
2-Record everything like a daily vlog with a Gopro 5
2-Download everything to my laptop an backup to a external Hardrive
3-Come back home (Spain)
4-Import into Premier and edit for a 2 videos a week
5-Export, upload to UA-cam and social media
6- Hope that people watch it so allows me to build a channel that support this type of projects
Just subbed!
Save a quick second by importing at the folder level, instead of the clip level of your footage an Premiere will auto create new bins with the same name as the folder. 🙏🏻
I was wondering if someone else would've commented that. :)
Peter, you ROCK! I was about to give up on this profession but finding you has renewed my passion. Glad you don't limit to the TWO MINUTE thing. Hearing the details is where the power is and hearing all of your 'extras' ... keeps it fun! Thanks for the help!
I just want to write out WOW!!! Honestly I was told to check out your channel from a brother and I can’t believe I’ve been missing out! I absolutely 100 percent am in love with your video style. I just started making my own videos and you are so inspiring, it’s addictive. Thanks for sharing your workflow!
Yes! A 15- minute 2- minute Tuesday! 👊 Like you I'm fascinated by behind the scenes and workflows of fellow photographers and couldn't watch this one quick enough! Thankfully the internet here in Papua New Guinea was behaving today. Loving your work Peter!
Same here. I have always loved watching all the behind the scenes activity of production shoots.
I just watched this video beginning to end..... legit one of my favorite youtubers..actually might be my favorite or casey.. idk but you are definitely up there. This video was 3 years ago and I am watching like its new... well it is to me.. thank you
That 4k vs 1080p decision sequence setting tip is so helpful! Thanks Peter!
I was wondering why you only light up one side of your face and not the other?? I actually never thought about it until watching this video but yeah you're setup is awesome!! Can you do a 2 minute Tuesday doing a beginner's kit? Lights, mic, tripod, lens, stabilizer for starters?? I would love to see what you would recommend! Thanks Peter!! 🙏🙏🙏
I think he does it to give more dimension to his face. It adds a more artistic/glamour look. I'm not really sure, but I do know it looks much more appealing than a head up light to his face.
Basic lighting technique: Key Light, Fill Light, Back Light for your subject. "Practical" lights the background. Key Light is the strongest light. Fill Light can be about half that strength, or less depending on how dramatic you want to model the talent. An alternative is to use a bounce card/white foamcore/white painted wall to take the place of a fill light. Peter appears to use no fill in this video, but I've seen him talk about using bounced light before. A light behind talent can add a rim of light around the head and shoulders. It is only around 25% strength of the Key Light. Use smaller fixtures to light up the background, as Pete showed you. Good Luck!!
So overwhelming! You truly are a professional. I have so much to learn. I'm going to film and upload even if it's crap, just like you have said. I'll learn as I go. I'm find of a Les Brown quote "Jump, and grow your wings on the way down". Thanks for all you do Peter! Seriously grateful for you!
Thank you. I’ve learned so much about media watching your videos. I enjoy studying your media/photography style. I especially love your technique in everything you do. Much love. 🙏🏼💜🤘🏼
1. Tip, if u drop your folders with footage to Premiere, 0the program upload it as a bin.
2. Tip, if u add any effets to Adjustment layer, You can just stretch it to cover every clip, and also You can switch off/on effets to all clips at once.
I Hope this will be helpfull to You.
Can’t wait for the colour grading video!
Dude, I was thinking the same thing.
Peter I'm so glad i found you on youtube cause you are definitely one of the best out here teaching and I love your energy. Im learning so much from your videos.
Great tutorial as usual! thank you so much!
I hope everyone understands that making this type of video about making a video probably took twice as long. Excellent work Peter! Thanks for sharing.
Tech With Brett absolutely does, I feel his pain, but it’s fun if you enjoy it
So nice to see a video from a different perspective! Awesome work man!
I'm very new to video...as in months after purchasing the A6500 which has motivated me to learn everything I can after decades of still-only photography. A month ago I didn't even know what B-Roll or S-LOG was. I stumbled on one of your other videos and subscribed. After watching this I feel like I should be paying a tuition or worskshop fee lol. Invaluable information and your passion and dedication is truly inspiring.
I see you posted this a year ago....so how did you end up liking the A6500?? I'm new to this, like you were, and was thinking about this camera to learn with.....would love to hear your feedback .....
They never come back..
Fulgar~ he must have hated it
Pete, absolutely love what you do mate. As a fellow artist, all i can say 'Totally Inspiring'
Appreciate all the content you share so anyone can learn.
This is so far one of my favorite tutorials overall! Never disappointing.
Longer video. More knowledge and inspiration. Love it!
Janina yes!!
Hey Peter I started watching you about a week ago. Started a YT channel like 6 months ago and my camera/quality/audio everything lacks basically at this point but it has been really fun learning the process on the fly! Love seeing your amazing work! Thank you for this video!
This was magical. Loved seeing someone I massively respect's workflow. Dank
Man, I have to say I actually get disappointed when 2 minute Tuesday is only 2 minutes. I am probably a little too crazy about your videos, I just really enjoy watching them and it keeps my creative flow going. So no complaints here
SO. GOOD. every time. Definitely a huge inspiration for me, Peter. Keep killing it my man.
Dustin Williams "keep smacking it" -Dan Mace
Ah! Hell man I have just realised that I have so so so so so so so so much work to do, it all makes sense when you break it down. Thanks mate, I love it, I am now following you as a result of seeing you with Casey, so thank you Casey. This sharing the love stuff is the way to go, thank you once again.
Fascinating! I guess it's like anything you do a lot, you remember to do the things you forget at first. You pay attention to details and refine your techniques. You learn from those around you and continuously grow. Thanks for sharing your tips Pete!
It is more encouraging than discouraging to see what it takes and I appreciate it that you realized that it could discourage people who don't want to put in the time and effort you did.
Making the comment that you started with nothing but a camera and skill... It really does open the door for anyone with creativity and ambition to make great content. ... I'm still trying to get the creativity part lol.
I Love your videos my friend!
What a surprise! you grabbed the 24mm first, lol....
Gus DaCosta he always says that's his favorite
Machi FREEMAN I was being sarcastic, I know how much he loves that 24mm. Lol...👍
Gus DaCosta oh my bad i just realize what you wrote I wasn't paying attention to what I was reading
Nothing's wrong with it. Actually, 24mm lenses are really nice cause you get a lot of information in the frame. It's just good for everything.
Gus DaCosta hey buddy will you check out my first short film ever please ? www.indiefolio.com/project/5a1e965ccd621/childhood-a-short-film-on-childhood
Peter! Your quality is always so stellar. You are always on top of the cinematography game and a huge reason I even started making videos on my channel in the first place!! I have loved every minute of it. Thank you for inspiring me!!
Subbed because of your "Which is Worse?" video. Very well made.
Marcus_Mravik I’m glad you liked it!!
looking at the level of organized you are even with computer files and your workspace.helps me understand the success you have had champ! amazing work
I think it's not just the process of how you make videos, but the energy you put in to! The equipment helps, of sure but in not the only thing!
Very cool, thanks for sharing!
A few tips time saving tips from a fellow filmer/editor:
- You can drag and drop the whole footage folders in PP, in stead of just the files (this way you skip creating a folder in the Project Panel, but if you probably still have to create a few Bins in there, and the shortcuts for it is Ctrl+B/Cmd+B
- You can create a keyboard shortcut for Scale to frame size in stead of changing the clip's size to 50%
- You can also create a keyboard shortcut for Paste Atrributes, in stead of right clicking and going up there in the menu
- Another option for color correcting is also to use an adjustment layer if many clips are with the same/similar exposure.
Keep up the good work, and thanks for sharing!
Lyubo Yanev that are exactly all the tips I would have written down if you didnt do it before. Saves a lot of time.
Follow up tip! Choose set to frame size instead of scale to frame size if you want to keep the quality of the original clip and have the scale set to whatever will fit (IE: 4k down to 1080p with scale at 50%). What scale to frame size does is down sample the footage to fit the size (IE: 4k clip is now a 1080p clip at 100% scale). I would personally say to use proxies in combination with scale to frame size to get the best results if you don't have a workstation computer. Thank you for the tip Lyubo!
Hey Peter, really minimal tip but take the project folders you have with all of your footage and drag and drop them into Premiere and it will automatically make those bins for you. Might save you 10-15 seconds but over time it will save you a lot of time :) especially on bigger projects with more cameras, bins, etc.
Also Peter, another tip on 4k footage on a 1080p timeline. Highlight your clip, right click, click "Set to Frame Size".
WAAAAYYY easier than scaling in effect controls. :)
Great tips!
Yeah "set to frame size" is fantastic when dealing with different resolution footage.
Great rundown how you make your awesome vids Peter. I had an idea a lot was involved, but not that much and credit to you that you do all that work to bring it all together so fast. Excellent work!
Your passion for filmmaking is contagious. Thank you for sharing it, it’s simply beyond awesome
Hey P, I don't know if you know this yet but instead, you scale the videos down to fit with 1080p. You can right-click and click scale to frame size. It is faster and more precisely!
Peter. you're an inspiration my friend. Love your heart. Keep being you.
I started doing behind the scenes for my videos, thanks to you. I used an old camcorder I had and moved it around during my shoots to give different angles. Worked really well. Thanks man!
This is awesome for the simple reason that you SHOW how much production goes into youtube videos. Thank you for these, I have learned so much recently from you.
Peter... you are a wonderful person... just thank you!♥️
Crazy helpful! Learned a ton Peter. Thanks for everything you put out there!
It is always so fascinating to watch you and boost my energy with a CAN DO attitude
Awesome, inspiring, educational and reassuring all at once. I've been binge watching your videos all week. Thank you!
How can people dislike a video like this? I really don't understand
I think it is because the video's name is in spanish..
they're all haters

Wow, wow, wow!!!!!!!!! Thank you SO much for this very detailed video! I am only just starting to dip my feet into photography and video, so this is really an eye-opener.
Again, thank you so much, for everything you do for this wonderful community! You, dear Sir, are my new hero!!!
absolutely love your passion! great video!!!
I love the workflow. I making gaming how to videos so having a clear picture in my mind before recording helps save a ton of time. I batch everything as much as I can.
I will spend 2-3 hours recording one night which will be for 3-4 different videos. I will stop and start the recordings so they are in different files.
Next day I will cut all the videos down to the most important stuff- I think of it like using a hatchet
Third day I will start doing audio for each of the videos and will typically shorten the clips that I had cut earlier. I want to give the most relevant info without too much extra filler while still having fun.
I let videos render while I am sleeping or at work and then will up load one video ever 2nd or 3rd day. The batch editing ends up saving a TON of time in the set up and tear down and figuring out process.
I don't have a lot of extra time for youtube and making videos after a full day of work and 2 kids so I do a lot of this at night when it is late. I literally record audio in a walk in closet with blankets on the tile floor to avoid the echo.
Its all in the name of making great videos!
Relyea you wrote soooo Long
@@naitikjoshi8816 ?
hey Peter, can you make another video like this one but with only using budget friendly gear? I have a smaller UA-cam channel and I want to make my videos with a lot more production value but I get overwhelmed by seeing your gear and other large UA-camrs gear. Love your videos and Im learning a ton. Thanks for your time that you put into these.
Salute to you sir. Thank you for sharing your process... I'm NOOO where near your level but what I love is that you explain that having your setup isn't important when you start. Keep graft in bro!
4 years later and this video is still relevant, I learnt a couple things for premiere. I started out with even less, used my phone for my first channel and finally got a camera this year. I still need to invest into lighting plus actually sit down and learn a lot more in both my camera and premiere. I just wish I had a dedicated space but my office is also my bedroom.
Tutorial on Colorista YES PLEASE
Guadilarious agreed!

Your kit room tidiness makes me very happy!

That dedication to go step by step to showcase others how to make a video was phenomenal!!! Thank You Peter! Hope I can get up there like you
PETE! We're here in Ecuador, going back in time on some of your "old" vids... LOVE this workflow! Crazy how similar we all work! But we probably learned it from you... well... actually... Yes, the file management you showed in another one of your vids is what we use, and you used it here! LOVE IT! But this vid was even more thorough. Thanks so much, dude! I think we'll be back in Canada in Septemberish...

This home studio set-up and the equipment storage room is a prosumer's wet dream.
seriously! I watch these and want to buy all the equipment so bad, despite knowing I'm not even remotely on that level yet with my little t5i haha
Peter how many hours does it typically take you to make one 15 minute video like this from start to finish?
I would love to know this as well. Just to have a benchmark for speed to work towards.
AdventureSportFlashlights same
Agreed! I'm sure he's incredibly efficient but it's always a time consuming process.
Probably 3-5 hours
Yes, I would love to know that as well. He said he plans out his videos and notes down stuff in a notebook so given all the planning and possible re-takes how long does it take to make a Vlog?
Oh, my mind is being blown. I have got so much to do to up my game. Thank you for sharing this and all your information on your videos!
16 minute Tuesday ROCKS
Yo how bout we just start calling it tutorial Tuesday 😂
OLD alec aesthetic ACCOUNT NO
Isn't this the best youtube channel, like if u agree
I really like how you play woth contrast in lighting and colourgrading, it gives your videos so much depth and makes it great to just look at. Of course your tutorials rock too 😉
You put so much thought into everything and it just blows my mind! GENIUS
I actually really needed this. (I'm glad its 15 mins instead of 2)
I've been just filming all of my videos/vlogs raw and not color grading but I've been actually looking to do things better. Thanks!
lexamazing I don’t color grade but I should probably start lol
I like most all of Peter's vids. But this was one of my favs. Sometimes I start thinking of a vid and think...that's way too much for this vid. But for a 2MT to take this much planning, time, effort, equip...ect. Glad I watched this.
lexamazing hey I love your channel
Why do I see you in every single video I watch?
She trying to promote her channel lol
Hey pete
You should apply your colour grades on one adjustment layer and then drag it over all the clips you need to apply it.
But thank you for that inspiration!! I really appreciate it!!👍👍
This was almost perfect, unmistakable, inspiring, enjoyable. Love.
Great video Pete,I’m a small fish in the UA-cam world, but that doesn’t mean my videos take any less time. Nice to see you keeping it real on how much effort it actually takes. Keep up the great work dude. ...
You don’t really know the importance of “Two Minuet” Tuesday until you have to edit a video at 5 in the morning and you forget how to do a certain effect. Thanks always for the save Pete!
for sure bro, he is a life saver
I just found this guy and its awesome. Most UA-camr's like people who make fast videos but everyone here wants his to be longer. Love that kind of community.
Yeah Great Community is has built. Very Loyal and Awesome people here
So true! Just the other day I was learning speed ramping but forgot how to use the pen tool quick search on Peters channel and Boom!
Johnny Allende That’s Exactly the one i was talking about. i needed to use speed ramp on a video yesterday.
1,000% Legit tutorial Peter! Great information and detail.
I’m at work, and for a solid 15 minutes + the time it will take to finish writing this comment, I enjoyed and could not stop drinking in the knowledge from this video. I’m a college student studying psych but decided to pursue my interest in digital media/film production as a possible minor. I’m learning how to use premiere for the first time and couldn’t be more out of my element, but I want to learn. I’m so thankful for videos like this, made by people who have a lot of knowledge to share. I’m looking forward to future videos from you. 😊✌🏼
Thanks for being you dude. Every time I watch one of your videos I learn so many new things! These things honestly make me want to learn videography.
Lovin' the whole OCD office / workspace neat-and-organized-put-stuff-away-while-I'm-working thing. It's a nice balance with....well, the rest of you. Just kidding. This is the most photographically inspiring channel anywhere. Been a working pro for 35 years, and I'm just eating this stuff up.
For the 4k clips dragged into 1080p, just right click and “scale to framesize” or sumn like that. You’ll save a few seconds :)
AccidentalBroadcast I think the idea is you don’t have to do any rescaling or messing around if you take a sec to pick the right clip
AccidentalBroadcast Fancy seeing you here sir ;)
Actually scale and set to frame size function differently and can distort footage. His way assures that it doesn't. I personally haven't seen any issues using scale to frame size as that's what I do personally, but I've been told that it occasionally doesn't function properly.
Your videos are unlike anyone else on UA-cam! So engaging, Inspiring, Friendly, Funny. Hands down, Keeps our attention throughout the video! Recently quit my job to take up film-making and video-blogging as my main driver. Your videos are nothing less than an Inspiration. Specially your '1 Year on UA-cam'.
I appreciate all the hard work you put into your videos and your willingness to share. Thank you so much!
If you just import the folders individually you won't have to create bins and label them :)
First 🎉 where’s the notification squad at?! Love this “two minute Tuesday” 😂
I loved this so freaking much Pete! Thanks a bunch for giving us what we want to see!
I really enjoyed this video (again). You are so entertaining talking about almost anything. Although here wasn't just anything but the how, the kitchen, the BTS of how you make all of us inspired and entertained. Thank you.
Guys! Due to this video being 15mins long, there will be no 2MT for the next 7 weeks. Thanks for your understanding! Lol...
Peter you are a UA-cam-god!
So agree!
Shh yeah!
He is so talented. What did he do before he was filming for 6 years as a job???
gosha. Im not sure but i thought he was working in a camera store!
Ivan Snz don't know. In his first video with casey he spoke about working for a magician or so. Don't remember :)
Ive enjoyed watching this process alot. Im barely starting, i only got a webcam, and bought a ring light. What ive been struggling was with structuring how the video goes like talk points and stuff. ( Most of the time i hit a wall while i talk). I got a blue yeti for my audio, i wanted my audio as best as i could from the get go. Thank you Peter for making these videos.
Man this is why I have huge respect for UA-camrs. Its a one man show for most.. you are the subject, scriptwriter, light team, audio team, videographer, editor.. until you become big enough you can afford a team hehe.
