Great video. I'm definitely guilty of not shooting enough - it's either "ok, an hour's more footage" or lunch. Lunch always wins, which infuriates the guys in post-production. Which is also me.

3:36 The direction of moving across the screen also mimics how we read books. In the Western world left to right movement can infer a positive feeling, whereas moving right to left can infer a negative one. The same goes for the subject moving down or up within the scene. Moving down is in sync with gravity which feels easy, whereas moving up is fighting gravity which appears difficult. The consistency of movement applies to the camera movement too in a sequence of shots, keeping the same direction flows from one shot to the next but if you were to change it then it would break the mood.
Every time I watch tips on video production, I'm always struck by how completely parallel it is with audio production. Same kinds of mistakes, same tricks for keeping the brain engaged, same techniques for creating and maintaining focus and telling a story. Gotta love art!

Wow I really needed this reminder today. Definitely falling into the trap of "pretty pictures" lately instead of complete actual thought. I need to go out and practice more.
Background lighting is very important, dare I say equally important to the facial illumination. The key is in the little things. I don't know how much video noise (if any) was cleaned in post but when you turned off that key light the quality was dope. You have a very decent (leaning towards impressive) camera. It seems we have similar taste in how the lighting of a room should be. Not to strong, from the side, which allows a soft naturalistic shadow to fall on your face and basically look like a better version of natural lighting. I call it "Twilight Lush". It's as if we're in the room with you not on some TV movie set.
This is me all over, not taking the time or allowing enough time to shoot B roll and I also need to work on my story telling with my B roll a lot more. All in all I need to practice a lot more and get better at it. Great video matti.
I mean there are no rules but there are things that make video and photography more appealing to look at. So it's best to follow them and only subvert those 'rules' when you have a specific reason or story that would be improved by making it more unusual. Like the rule of thirds makes a video easier to watch and then the next shot being in the same third makes it less jarring. If you want to jarr your audience then go ahead, but it can just look rubbish or amateurish, hence why quick whip movements are used a lot because it allows you to break those rules by creating a transition. It gives the brain enough information to accept that something has changed. So definitely follow and understand why they are rules until you have a good reason not to.

Excellent tutorial Matti! These are great tips, I definitely struggle with following "the" rules. There then becomes a sameness.....That said I could definitely use some guidance and that's why I'm here.
Thank you! Still deeply relevant 2 years later. I struggle with maintaining motion consistency so I really should be certain I get plenty of B-roll filming from both directions so I have enough footage to pick which way I want to go. Great reminder!

Hahahah. I just need to aply this on my outdoor training video, cause I only aply this on making intérieur video. Effect looks like a pro
I let friends borrow an old video camera on their vacations and then edit the video for them when they get home. (It’s my way of vicarious travel.) I STRESS for them to FILL the card with video so I have the best selection. I also give general tips since they are not photogs- don’t zoom from a moving vehicle 🤢, don’t walk while you’re filming 👣, and try to hold on to something to make your body a tripod. I swear every time they come back from a week trip with one hour’s worth of video, only about 10% being B-roll. 😣 And there’s always zoomed in video from the train, and a lot of unusable walking shots that stray between the scenery and their shoes.
You can break down the movement rule even more. For example is it also important that walking does look consistent when switching angles in a scene and the character does not do "two left steps in a row" or something like that..
I like this video it helps me a lot as a begineer or a person with no idea or experience at all.keep it up bro so i can learn more to you , you are my mentor..vroom vroom vroom
Great tips on broll. I definitely need to think more about sequences when filming broll. The out-take about the lights and need to charge them was so relate-able.
If you are doing a camera move from point A to point B, it's best to hold on the start and end points for much longer than you think you need to. Likewise, if you're shooting a shot of a static object, hold for at least a ten count. It gives you options in the edit.
7:32 "None of us have extra money lying around" LATER... 7:58 "Uhg! What a schlep it is to have to charge all of my 5 extra lights, not counting the 3 main lights I needed for this setup ."
it's basically extra footage to give more background or detail to the video your making. for example News, they can't just talk about something and not show what they're talking about, that's why they show footage of the events while the reporter is talking to help the audience understand, that would be called B-roll. hope that made sense I'm awful with examples
In news traditionally your interviews, two shots, reporter cutaways etc. comprise your A-roll. This is the main video for your story. Your b-roll is the additional video you need to tell your story. It's usuallu whatever the story is about. It's normally a series of wide, medium, tight shots. In cinema it can be more creative shots: tracking, rack focus, zooms, pans, tilts, etc any you need to make the story interesting and visually appealing to the viewer.
Might want to check your “same direction of movement” rule at about 5:15 I will disagree that camera movement should always be same direction. Opposite movements on consecutive shots can provide intensity, just pay attention to where the viewers eyes will be lead. Nice vid tho thanks for the tips!
B-roll is definitely a weakness of mine, but something I've really come to enjoy working on. It's maybe only in the last year that I've understood how important and interesting b-roll is. I talk about b-roll enough with my husband, that even he will say things like, "If you had some b-roll shots in this section, I think that would be more interesting." xD Great video Matti, thank you!
You have no idea how much I had learn from your videos getting better every time Thank you so much and please keep up this amassing work. Best Regards!
Good stuff. You have to put the same effort into b-roll that you do for interviews and so forth. Once you learn how to do interviews it's a set-it-and-forget-it sort of thing. But b-roll is case-by-case IMHO. It's a different set of possibilities every time.
