  • Today we take a look at the Vintage Star Wars Rebel Transport by Kenner. I've had this toy for a long time and it was always missing some stickers. So time to give it a good clean and get a few things fixed and repaired.

    I had this toy as a kid for Christmas one year when I got lots of Star Wars that year. It was about that time my younger brother jumped on it and cracked the top of the ship. Luckily my dad came to the rescue and used a little bit of heat to melt the plastic back together and a little glue all the sudden I had a new battle damaged rebel transport. The joys of Star Wars toy. Thanks Dad!

    I remember this was the ship nobody wanted for Christmas when it came out. Personally I loved it.

      It had such a different feel from the first movie. I’m not sure if that really translates to people who didn’t live through the time period, but I hope it does.

    The Rebel Transport toy was basically just a fancy figure carrying case. (I just bought one complete and love the ol' boy.)

    I loved that ship. It was a really good crying case for all my Star Wars figures. When it wasn't being used as a Rebel Transport, it was co-opted in as a an Imperial Freighter that the Rebels had to board and rescue Admiral Akbar from. Or, it was Jabba the Hutt's personal yacht. I love the idea of filling it with a Rebel army of Hoth soldiers, with B-Wing pilots crewing it, though. Great job.

    I didn't really care about this ship in the movies, but it was one of my favorite toys. It was basically a modular play set. It could be a crash site, a base, a supply ship to fight over, a prison, everything. Not only that but you could load it up and old onto that black handle and spin it for hyperspace until you got dizzy.

    Started this one yesterday & found a spare canon under the gun mount! This was one of my first ships 22 years ago & although it wasn't the Falcon, it was great for housing my figure collection. Shame they never made the Blockade Runner too. Another superb video for an underrated ship!

    My best friend had this when we were kids and i liked that it doubled as a figure storage case..i finally found a complete one at the swap meet 3 years ago for $15 dollars, the guy selling it was happy that i knew what it was and told me to take care of it because it was his favorite ship..he was selling it because he was moving out of state. I also got and imperial troop transport, and a Gakken Legioss fighter from him..

    This will always be the one that got away for me... it was the last Star Wars vehicle I recall seeing in the Argos catalogue sometime around '87/'88. As a result I always feel a pang whenever I see it. Along with the Bespin Twin Pod Cloud Car it's the vehicle I most wanted that I never got.
    I love the trapdoor in the bottom, so a child could recreate all those 'escape through the bottom of the Rebel Transport' scenes from the movies! I jest - it all adds to the playability.

    In regard to the locking mechanism or the "Black Tower" as it was called, it can actually be removed successfully. I recently completed a full restore of this ship, but ran into the same dilemma along the way. I used a hair dryer to heat the plastic to the point that it would flex just enough for me to work the piece out. A hair dryer doesn't generate near as much heat as a traditional heat gun and you can pretty much isolate the spot you want to warm up without doing any damage. Have fun all.

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  7 років тому

      +MrStr8leg It might be worth washing them separately if they are wildly different colours. I use warm water. So you can still put your hands in it and not burn them. Glad you are enjoying my videos. Good luck with your restoration.

    I'm not really a collector, just a Star Wars fan whose better half occasionally lets me indulge in a figure or two. But I have to say, your stickers and attention to detail (often going beyond what was there in the first place) are amazing. I hope you're using your gift in your profession, assuming this isn't it. Kudos.

    You could go the hotwheel route of drilling out the rivets and tapping them to accept machine screws. That would allow the cardboard to be removed, but still allow you to replace it and hold it in securely.

    This toy always amused me because of the liberties they took with scale - the black tower in the middle [which should actually be near the stern], is, on the 'real' model, the bridge. It is, however, a great toy. It would be fun to customize. It is actually about the same scale as the MPC Millennium Falcon model kit [1/100 approx].

    • @tyrranos9688
      @tyrranos9688 6 років тому +2

      I love that Kenner managed to take liberties with the scale and proportion but still create a fairly accurate representation, and one that worked as a toy and could hold enough figures to make it fun. I feel that is a lost art when I look at modern Star Wars toys.

    • @brianartillery
      @brianartillery 5 років тому +1

      @@tyrranos9688 - I agree 100% with you. The new toys are rather flimsy, and, in some cases, too fragile to play with, which defeats the idea of a toy somewhat. "Happy Christmas! Here's that Star Wars ship you wanted - oh, you mustn't play with it, though, as it will break..."

      Also, quick question: Do you think spraying a coat of matte clear coat over the entire ship (or whatever you fix with good decals) would be a good way to ensure the survival of the decals for the future?

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  7 років тому +2

      I wouldn't spray the whole ship. That could cause damage to the plastic. The stickers should be fine just as they are. The glue may dry out over time, so just re-stick them.

    • @JahnoKestt

    Even for a Kenner toy, this one was particularly inaccurate. It always bugged me, especially how the stuff around the equator is proud rather than inset, ruining the armor plating effect. When added to the overly rounded/blunt head, it looked more like a whale than the real thing.
    The black thing in the middle rather than towards the back was also way off in color, size, and position. It's just a place where Kenner was like "whatever" about even trying to look anything like the actual ship. I guess as it was basically just a figure case, no big deal.
    But great restoration. The only Kenner ships I had as a kid were the Millennium Falcon, a snow speeder, and an AT-ST. Other than that, I had some mini-rigs and a bunch of figures. :)

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  7 років тому

      I guess the middle thing being bigger is just so it can be a handle to hold the whole thing by. But it isn't one of the greatest toys. But still nice.

    Let me finish! I would of removed them, gave them a dab of fresh glue and reseated them just as they are now.
    *blasters are holstered*
    I agree they keep the ship feeling like it was a loved toy, and that is why I would make sure they stay put where the prior owner had stuck them. A toy even a collection piece should show it was once something beloved by a imaginative kid.
