Just a quick 'thank you' to Mr. Polloi: I just restored a vintage AT-ST and this video was extremely helpful - particularly the advice regarding the correct positioning of pieces during reassembly. Unfortunately, I couldn't separate the 'head' section (as I really felt the plastic would crack), but it still came out looking terrific after the peroxide bath. Incidentally, I'm quite amazed at how long you submerge your items in the hydrogen peroxide, as in my part of the world (on a sunny summer's day, in direct unfiltered sunlight) the change happens in mere hours. I also use the commercially available 6% HP solution in a covered plastic tub, but I'm guessing the heat of the sun here contributes markedly to the process. I imagine in Merry OId England the sun has to be coaxed from behind the clouds at most times during the year (!), hence the much longer bathing time. Anyway, many thanks for this video and your channel which, along with Retroblasting, is providing some of the very best vintage toy content on the Internet. :)
The AT ST was the first 'big' Star Wars toy I ever got as a kid after previously just getting a few figures, so it probably would've been around Christmas '84. So many happy memories of playing with it back then. Seeing this restoration brings joy to my heart.
Perfect breakdown - I bought a spring kit off of ebay after acquiring a walker with a wonky leg twitch - tore it down and put it back together and the leg was still jackknifing while the other wasn't doing anything. After watching this video, I realized the axels must not have been synced with the button mechanism via the that weird H piece. Pulled it back apart and rebuilt it exactly as instructed and sure enough, works like a charm, even stands on its own after heating the legs from one of your previous videos. Thank you! Cheers from across the pond.
Another fine restoration and what a result! I’ve never seen the appeal of certain toys, but to see them restored is marvellous. The hints, tips and inside bits and bobs (thank you LEGO) go a long way to making these toys presentable again. I’ve just claimed my Action Man boxes from Mum’s attic and I hope to go through them to see what can be given the Toy Polloi TLC effect.
You are brilliant.Your video of Skeletor's cape havw helped me a lot.It looks just like yours in video.I've restored my figure and put in a beautiful box. Thanks for the Macgyver tip!!
Awesome guide. Just got a cheap one of these off ebay and wanted to restore it, now thanks to your walk through i am able to with confidence. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video. I got a complete, but dirty AT ST myself and following your vid i am going to take it apart, clean it and bleach it and reassemble. Looking forward to it! Also big thanks for the stickers, very helpful!
I just want to say Thank You so much for posting this particular video, because I just got an AT ST POTF from eBay and I had to tear it apart to clean it, but I had no idea how to put it back together. You are a LIFE SAVER, because your video really helped me figure it out. Thank you. I also want to thank you for showing how to WHITEN figures again with your Hydrogen Peroxide method. I've been looking for years for a solution to this very common problem.
when i was a kid my dad gave me his AT-ST and now that i’m older and enjoy painting i think i want to give it a respray! i painted Jango fetts slave one in boba fetts slave one colors and it looks AWESOME id love to show some pictures sometime!
JediVlogger Thanks :D An x-wing should be pretty easy to do. You'll just need a bigger tub. Good luck with your restoration. Post some pics on my FB page when you are done.
Really great to see a British person doing these kinds of vids. I've been looking to get into restoration but every other one I've seen is American. Thanks for all the advice I'm looking forward to restore a little bit of my childhood
Hi. Thanks for all your great content. I've successfully brought my beloved AT-AT and Sl*ve 1 back to life. Great results and the de-yellowing was an absolute beauty. I'm about to start on the Falcon and have run into the issue of not being able to fit it fully in my peroxide tub used for previous projects. Have you noticed bad streaks or imbalances when 'turning' vehicle parts in the peroxide? I'd prefer to submerge the entire pieces, but maybe dipping them half in at a time will be OK? Thanks again and loving these projects 👍👍
i loved watching your snow speeder video because you made it more screen accurate. would you ever do that for this toy? that is the set of stickers i would pay for!
I've heard that one way you can also bleach discoloured plastic rather than submerge it is that you suspend it above the solution inside the tub so it's whitened by the vapours instead and that should theoretically provide a more even way of de-yellowing.
vivamorrissey1 You just need to carefully click each of the clips out of the way and it will pop off. It takes a bit of practice. But it can be done. Try putting it in boiling water first to soften the plastic so it doesn't snap.
I realize this video is years old, but it still gave me lots of tips!! Thank you 🙏 Also, could you please tell exactly which walker this is? If you can recall I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
I know it's been awhile that this video has been up, but I just got into restoring my old Star Wars toys. I used this video to walk through the disassembly/assembly of the walker. I had a slight problem come up on mine - when I reattached the head/cockpit to the body, the head spins quite freely now and there is no friction like before. I had to pry back on the tabs around the base of the head piece to get it to come loose. I am thinking that those tabs aren't closed up like they used be. Can you think of a way to tighten those back up? I was thinkin of wrapping something around the tabs like a cable tie or even a small piece of wire around it to try and squeeze those tabs together. Your thoughts??
I opened the chest when I was young and never been able to close it again. I tried for hours cause It was one of my favorite toy. I have been really stupid this day… still feel bad 35 years after when I think about this...
Does anybody know how you can get a really white looking finish on these without repainting them. I want to whiten up a spare I have for a Hoth diorama.
Very carefully. I should probably re do this video. You have to in clip each of the clips holding the head on, you may find a couple break, but it can be done.
Hi, I really loved your video, the only thing is not clear for me its how you fixed the floppy legs so it standup correctly after reassembly. Could you elaborate on that. Regards
Great video inderdaad. My at-st also had floppy legt but i did not see you explain fixen that problem. Is just taking it apart and putting back together fixing that?
Toy Polloi well the toy was the Power of the force version so I'll stick with the included stickers. But I have to say the vintage stickers do have some nicer detail work. Thanks
sitting next to mine. has the sticers, no yellowing, BUT some guy gave the feet a some brown paint to simulate the dirt of the end or forest. other than that, it's in very good condition!
Hey love your video, I've recently restored one with your help. I have a question, if you can help? I've recently bought another one from eBay, to restore and have discovered that it's been spray painted. What's the best way to remove the paint without damaging the plastic underneath? Thanx
A very helpful restoration review! I now inspired to restore my 1983 GI joe Sky striker too. I f I may ask, if the bleaching process will work on Translucent plastic too, like the 1983 Skystriker glass canopy without any complications?
Amazingrestoration, dont hate me but there is one problem, the bottomturret should have 3 gun barrels and it only has 2 becuase one snapped away, over all looks really good.
Hello. Love the video. I have an AT-ST with legs that are slightly warped which causes it to lean to one side. Can you advise how to straighten the legs? I tried tightening the screws but that did absolutey nothing. Thank you in advance for your advice!
Toy Polloi another question its about my AT-ST its never been used and its been basically sealed for 20 years but it seems to be a bit off balance when its in stand mode like it wants to full backwards thats with the head etc on, any ideas on how to fix it?
Makes sure all the screws are tight. And that the legs are straight. You can remove any bends in the leg plastic by warming them in just boiled water. And then straighten them by hand and let the cool.
+System509 you can try to wipe the restored items down with armor all or an unscented black magic tire shine. These products from what I can tell on line a plasticizers.
Hi I have a problem with my at-st, when he is standing he leans to one side, as if the right foot has no strength, is it necessary to change the inner spring? Thank you very much.
The legs bend over time. Chances are it is that causing the problem. Take them apart and warm the main leg in just boiled water to reshape and straighten.
So im going to do my 1995 POTF Millennium Falcon with this method, how long does it need to soak in the sun? What percentage Hydrogen Peroxide should I be using also?

Hello. I have an old Kenner AT-ST, it is in very good condition but, it is a bit crooked, like the one in the video. I've watched the video several times and I can't understand how have you fixed that problem. Could you tell me how did you made it? Thank you!
+Toy Polloi Thankyou very much! I've tightened the screws and forced the spring to get more pushing power, but it still in the same position, crooked to the right side.
I know old video. Any advice on how I can restore the look of my 2004 R2D2 his body is yellowed. It's the one that has a button and beeps and the red light comes on, so it's got electronics inside and submersing any kind of liquid all over it would damage it.
I have a similar one but it looks more a curate but I do think it's from endor unfortunately part of one of the leg joints has been broken off and the joint is unable to be snapped in temporarily I needbhelp!
If it has really complicated legs, then that is from a modern line and known to break really easily. I have fixed one. But you need all the broken parts to do this.
+Toy Polloi I believe so maybe I can take a picture of the broken joint and put it on my twitter or email it to you if you feel comfortable with that I will try to take the picture tommorow I won't be available today
Thanks for the detail & edit. Learned a new word: wangling.
Wow, thank you.

Such a valuable resource for collectors and enthusiasts. Great close up camera angles so we can see exactly what’s going on and follow along.

Instead of soaking the items in a bin, you can also soak them in a sealed zip-loc plastic bag. This saves space too!
***** That's a great idea. Thanks.

Funny how De-Yellowing involves the main bad guy to cause the yellowing in the first place
Amazing!
i dread what awaits my beautiful white clone troopers over the next 10 to 20 years
Eventually they will become Imperial Stormtroopers. :(

i loved watching your snow speeder video because you made it more screen accurate. would you ever do that for this toy? that is the set of stickers i would pay for!

Toy Polloi that would be amazing.
Me too!
I've heard that one way you can also bleach discoloured plastic rather than submerge it is that you suspend it above the solution inside the tub so it's whitened by the vapours instead and that should theoretically provide a more even way of de-yellowing.
Why it's head is yellow? I have the same problem on gray lego bricks.
You didn't show how you got the head off the body! Try as I might I've just not been able to do this with mine! Great video by the way
vivamorrissey1 You just need to carefully click each of the clips out of the way and it will pop off. It takes a bit of practice. But it can be done. Try putting it in boiling water first to soften the plastic so it doesn't snap.
The shifting white balance makes it difficult to tell when the yellowing has gone.
How did you get the "head" off ??
I realize this video is years old, but it still gave me lots of tips!! Thank you 🙏

I've not had that issue before, but a cable tie sounds like a good idea to me. At least worth a try.
why not just get a deeper container rather than break it open? thanks. your video helped with my own restoration. 🙂
Good work. What peroxide do you use. Can you link to it so I can buy some in the UK? Thanks
I opened the chest when I was young and never been able to close it again. I tried for hours cause It was one of my favorite toy. I have been really stupid this day… still feel bad 35 years after when I think about this...
Great shows but could I just add if you use modelling clamps you can reverse them and have more control on spreading than hand plyers
Does anybody know how you can get a really white looking finish on these without repainting them. I want to whiten up a spare I have for a Hoth diorama.
Great tutorial. I am fixing up a vintage AT-ST for a friend, how do I remove the body from the lower part on the swivel?
Very carefully. I should probably re do this video. You have to in clip each of the clips holding the head on, you may find a couple break, but it can be done.
@@toypolloi I think I'll just leave it on then... Should be possible to attach the legs that way and mechanism.
This is a great instructional video
One question, how you managed to remove the guns from the cheaks?
The side guns just pull out.
Toy Polloi awesome, thanks!!!
Have you done a at at walker. Mine has unfortunately turned yellow
Hi, I really loved your video, the only thing is not clear for me its how you fixed the floppy legs so it standup correctly after reassembly. Could you elaborate on that. Regards
If you have straightened the legs and made sure all the screws and springs are tight, it should stand up straight.

Video on the floppy legs coming along next week as so many people ask about it. Cheers

Thanks. Inkjet printer with glossy sticky backed paper. Cheers
Toy Polloi I have a question I have a Power of the Force AT ST but im debating wether to stick vitnage stickers on it or the supplied POTF ones?
I go with the correct ones for the toy.
Toy Polloi well the toy was the Power of the force version so I'll stick with the included stickers. But I have to say the vintage stickers do have some nicer detail work. Thanks
Nice job!
Could you tell me the name of the liquids you use to clean it?
Thanks
Rigoberto Rojas To clean, just soap and water. And a toothbrush to get into the small spaces.
Thank you Toy Polloi.

+Project: [DARK Corp]! Check out my Snowspeeder restoration videos. I cover the glass in those.
Followed your brilliant tutorial, my atst leans forwards like yours did, and it still leans after stripping/rebuilding. How did you fix its stance?
+Keoni1974 if you have straightened the legs and tightened all the screws it should stand upright.
Exellent
If you want to speed up the process of de-yellowing you can apply heat or UV light. Check out 8 bit guy's video called "new retrobrite techniques"
Any ideas on how to repair a bow'd. Leg? I have a few and the legs are bent inward. Thx
Place them in just boiled hot water for 30 secs or so. Then re shape and let cool.

Makes sure all the screws are tight. And that the legs are straight. You can remove any bends in the leg plastic by warming them in just boiled water. And then straighten them by hand and let the cool.
Does the restoration make it resistant to future discolouring?
No. It can discolour again. Keep old toys out of the sun.

Without taking it apart again, I don't know.

The legs bend over time. Chances are it is that causing the problem. Take them apart and warm the main leg in just boiled water to reshape and straighten.
Do you reuse the hydrogen peroxide or buy fresh stuff for different restoration projects? I have quite a few of my old toys to restore.
You can re-use it quite a few times.
So im going to do my 1995 POTF Millennium Falcon with this method, how long does it need to soak in the sun? What percentage Hydrogen Peroxide should I be using also?
Check out my videos for all the details on what I use.
