If I hadn't actually seen you making one of those Death Star plans things from scratch, I would have said it was impossible to make one of those without a 3D printer because of the rounded edges. This is by far the most ingenius thing I've seen you craft. You are a pro man. Kudos!
I have this R2 complete with Death Star plans, as well as a remote control one about the same size that still works :-) I'm glad my mom taught me to take care of my toys!
This video came at the perfect time for me as I had just purchased a 12 inch R2D2. I followed your steps and now mine looks much better than when I took it out of the bubble wrap a few days ago and was disappointed by all the yellowing and scuff marks that I saw. Thank you so much!
The 12" figures seemed sooo expensive when I was a kid. But they were probably just a few bucks. Needless to say, I never had any. They seem like elusive treasures to me now. Love that R2 came with secret plans! Your repros look dead on in the vid.
I had some when I was a kid (still have them!) I managed to eventually get a full set. I know a lot of people don't care for them, but I think they are pretty nice.
Amazing. I bought my R2 from a school jumble sale in '78 for 5p. My most treasured toy. He's complete, but wobbly & a bit chipped. I'll definitely be trying a few of these fixes to get him battle ready. Great video. Thank you.
Great job, Dave. The Death Star plans panels ended up looking fantastic.I can hardly tell they're not de-yellowed versions of the original ones! I would have tried making the curved corners with a styrene strip, but your solution seems to be much better than trying to bend those into shape (Never tried that myself, and if they would snap as you said, then I would have to find another solution to that). Everything else looks top notch. For the stickers, if you want to, eventually make two different images line up perfectly, you can set the above layer as "Difference", and when you can get everything to be completely black, then it means they're perfectly aligned.
Great fixes, I like both variations you had at the end. I've never owned the 12" scale vintage figures besides Princess Leia but I do like R2-D2 so I might have to get myself one.
Good stuff! I like how you kept one in a state of yellowing because as you alluded to, trundling around the Jawa-infested Jundland Wastes, searching for crazy old wizards does take a visible toll on an adventurous R2 unit. I'd definitely hold out for a nice white left leg for the other Artoo though!
For loose joints on my fall apart C-3PO, i used clear UV nail polish. If I built it up too much, it could be filed down. Might work on the R2 leg joints.
i wonder if anyone as they became a teenager lost the death star plans when using artoo as a place hide the stash ? bad joke but couldnt resist the thought lol thank you toy polloi for another awesome resto and repair
A most excellent, and satisfying video to watch! I was very impressed with the Tamiya paint! That's a great looking match! Have you ever figured out a way to fix a broken clicker on the original 1977 3.75" R2D2 figure? I have at least three R2s in my collection with broken clickers, and you almost never see anyone selling a replacement part on eBay. When you do see them for sale, they're always overpriced. You'd be paying about the same price for a clicker as for a complete, vintage R2. I'm not sure that this lid method would work for that or not, but it might be worth trying. Would require a much smaller, thinner plastic, I suppose.
I had a thought.. You might want to paint in the shot up parts on the chrome, before eventually, you have none at all. Either clearcoat the spots, till you're sure it's even and maybe even overlapping the chrome a bit. Or get fancy, color it in black, clear coat, etc.
I got an original one of these Artoo's for Christmas 1978 and kept it with me for years, lost the Death Star plans at some point and the silver on the dome had all worn off, he was well loved and played with. Years later I was at a market in the UK and a guy was selling the accompanying Threepio, but he wouldn't part with it til I convinced him I had the artoo at home. Back in 2012 both were stolen, I discovered the crime too late to recover them both.
If you are daring, you might tryusing an open flame to heat the plastic up just enough to make it malleable and then bend it over the plan corners while it's still hot.
Another fab video Dave. Would have loved this toy back in the. A friend of mine had it but I was disappointed with the centralised 'eye'. Maybe when you revist the toy you could do a custom made eye piece that looks more film authentic🙂
Wow, I didn't know these existed in this form. My one doesn't have the plans in the back, just a battery compartment for the sound effects that it makes. Thing is, I've lost the cover - one day I shall fix all that... and the Darth Vader. My C3PO seems to have survived the best.
@@toypolloi Yeah, it'll be an identical process. Every time I've dug it out while at my parents' place, I'm constantly thinking that I should restore it - but if I do that, I'll have to restore everything else.... then their loft will be empty and we can't have that!
I gotten this12" R2 and it was my uncle's when he was a kid and only thing that happened to mine was abit of crome that rubbed off and the legs being loose and i had no idea mine was missing the Death Star Plans until i watched your video i just thought the grooves in the floor was due to using the same molds for the remote control one or something and i'll have to keep my eyes out for buying another one like mine in much worst shape so i could make one of R2's cousins maybe a R4 or R5-unit
Just an idea : a custom astromech with one battered 12 inches action figures of R2-D2 and also a custom protocol droid if you happen to have any spare 12 inches action figure of C-3PO similarly to what Stan Solo made with the 3 & 3/4 inches custom action figures... it would be awesome watching you repair old broken 12'' to make some customs !!!!!!
Fantastic Repairs, Dave!😃 The craftsmanship you put into the parts you have to create from scratch is impeccable. Have you ever considered working in fabrications for film or television? Thank you for the share👊😎🔥
@toypolloi for the edging of the Death Star plans could you use thinner styrene and just layer it? For example wrap a piece of 1mm around followed by a piece of 0.5mm over that.
I had no idea that this existed.was there a Lando as well?. possibly a hope for slave Leia from Jedi in 83,no customizers then, otherwise there might have been some made
molotow not only comes in pens, seen Adam Savage use it in an airbrush, wonder if you could add a blue color to the liquid chrome with some sorta dy or other paint?
Hey Dave I remember the Ewok tree stand, 1st video of yours I watched. You are so creative, I believe there is not a fix you have done which I disliked. Take care and Happy Weekend😃

Are you gonna make a video of you doing the light up skeletor from your last unboxing?? That would be awesome also a new tour of your toys would be awesome.
Will this plant not bend round heated in boiling water? Or you could've put scores on the bends to help go round? But all in all thumbs up to you rescuing these poor droids. Top tips and another brilliant vid 👍🖖🍺
I don't have a 12" R2-D2, but you've shown some great tips and products I will find VERY handy! Thank you! Have you considered working up new additional "plans" stickers that look like actual Death Star hologram / blueprints?
Hey polloi do you have any advice on how to de yellow transformers? I see you have videos for Star Wars figs and MOTU but do you do transformers in the same fashion?? A video on that would be amazing pls help me cause all the other vids I have watched aren’t very clear there is only like three vids abut it.

@@toypolloi Thanks for your reply. I couldn't see a video about it, I'll have to dig deeper and find it. Btw, love the channel! Now I've got all my old toys back your vids will be soooo useful. Such huge waves of nostalgia hit me, they make me giddy with good ptsd-like flashbacks to my youth!
And now, my droid will be complete. I think I know where to get some. I will NOT use Amazon. They can't find our house. I'm not in good enough shape to chase them down all the damn time. Feh. Now... the sticker sheets... Hmm. I wonder if Staples does stickers.
Some people are going to be mad at me but I'm going to be really pedantic here, these are 13 inch figures not 12 inch. I have R2 D2, C3 P0 and Bobba Fett.

The shorter clicker makes this R2 sound more similar to his 3.75 inch version which I think is great

Excellent fix. I'd like to have seen the yellowed one whitened again. Good to see the toys living on.
Wow Dave...!
With those panels you really surpassed yourself. I couldn't believe it, the moment you first showed your version.
Beautiful work! So many great fixes here. I’m very glad to see a childhood toy restored to minty freshness. Great job Toy Polloi! 😊

My local Tesco never had these 12” figures back in 1980, I really want to get a broken Artoo and Chewy to complete my missing childhood 😝
Awesome Dave. On the hunt for a 12 inch R2 Now.

For touching up the blue parts on chrome you could easy use a marker .
Because of the thin layer the chrome shine through
I have tried that and it doesn't work. The solvent in the pain removes the chrome paint.
Great video Dave, will be keeping my eye out to pick up one of these. Good to know in advance what is repairable.

Sunlight damages warm colors (Reds, yellows, oranges, Browns,) first, FYI. It WILL damage other colors (even black,) but it will take a lot longer.
