A subtle moment of characterization I found really powerful: Nyneave is distraught over Ryma Sedai’s battle, and Elayne puts her hand over Nyneave’s mouth; what’s interesting to me is Elayne is clearly wearing her Queen face when she does it. You can see her smothering her own pain under her royal bearing, and leading Nyneave. In that moment, we truly see Elayne Trakand, daughter of Morgase, future Queen of Andor. It’s a very well acted moment.
A tough bit in a devastating episode was when Renna tells Eggy she’s special and we’re left reminded of how Egwene was left out of praise at the Tower because they kept telling her how special Nyn was. This whole episode…. Wow.
This was literally word-for-word exactly what I told myself while watching! The acting in this episode was incomparable. There is not one actor who touched this episode who didn't knock it out of the park. Mat and Min, Rama fighting with her warder, Moiraine, Rena, Nyneave and Elayne, LIANDRIN with Lanfear, Lanfear with Rand... Top to bottom unparalleled performances. But by far the two standouts were Rand and Egwene. Josha was great for the whole epsidoe, but that moment when he screams "TELL ME!!" at Lanfear, I had to pull it back and watch it again because that boy pulled his whole SOUL out his chest to deliver that line and it was stellar. And my GAWD, Madeleine... The events of Egewene's time with the Seanchan in the books are some of the most formative for her character, pivotal for the story as a whole, and absolutely gut-wrenching for the audience. Depicting these moments on screen was at the top of many book-readers list of worries when it came to adapting the books. Madeleine heard all of that chatter and all she said was "Hold my beer." This woman took all of my highest hopes for this part of the story and she CRUSHED it. Madeleine Madden, you are divinity made flesh and I bow before you.
26:06 I just wanted to point out that after talking to the Blue Sitter, the look on Egwene’s face says a lot. Let’s just say that Seanchan has captured the wrong woman. They just made a very dangerous enemy. Spoilers for Wheel of Time Book 12 ahead . . . . . “Egwene stood at an open hole in the side of the White Tower, wind pulling at her white dress, tugging at her hair, howling as if in accompaniment to her rage.” “Each faceless Seanchan that Egwene struck down seemed to be Renna in her mind's eye.” “Egwene was part of the fires that burned in the Tower, bloodying the sky with their flames, painting the air with their smoke.” “The White Tower, the sacred dwelling of the Aes Sedai, was under attack. They were all in danger, a danger greater than death.” “Egwene defended herself and each woman in the Tower. She would MAKE the Seanchan withdraw.” “This raid had to cost them.” Chapter 41 A Fount of Power, The Gathering Storm
Glad they did the Demane horror justice. There really aren’t words. I really want the book scene when Eggy escapes and she “shows” what they taught her, and then levels everything she can see. It’s not honorable, but I want vengeance for all the collared ones. The tree made me cry, especially after Loials scene singing a tree into growth and vitality. Needed Suroth to die after violating such a precious act. Don’t mess with trees!!
This was my feeling too. The books are full of times that dark friends were disappointed to see how the things they believed they were promised were twisted into lies they hadn't anticipated.
...and the actor's Gay... 🙄 Typical.... lol.... Btw.... he's just such an AMAZING eye candy 🍬 ; and he's been in "Shadowhunters" and "Game Of Trones"... (Shadowhunters being his best and most versatile performance, I think ❤) Yes!; looking forward to follow him.... 😇
The Amyrlin is bringing 14 sitters because this is exactly "The Amyrlin's Visit" from the beginning of tGH switched locations from Fal Dara to Cairhien, and 14 AS (2 from each Ajah) is how many she brought there.
I know people praised Zoë Robins for her portrayal of Nynaeve during Ep3 and the Arches, but now seeing Madeleine Madden's performance.. Their acting and performance is absolutely stellar. You can really see the defiance in her eyes, you can see the conflict between giving up and staying defiant in the end, yet the she eventually gives in and pours the water. Casting and acting has been absolutely stellar! Not to mention the juxtaposition between Ryma defiantly going until the end, properly breaking the bones of the Sul'dam in a way that only a Yellow could think of, and with Egwene slowly coming to terms with her situation and new reality.. Really good episode, despite all its horror!
These episodes are keeping up the awesomeness! Egwene's "training" is so rough and so good. Seeing all the things the a'dam does, being forced to burn the tree, her breaking down after realizing she no longer sees the pitcher as a weapon, and that glimmer of hope when we see her steel herself at the very end. Can't wait for Renna to get what's coming to her. There was a lot of subtle acting that I loved in this episode! - Rand's response of just looking at his hands when Lanfear asks "What makes you think I can't trust you?" - Lanfear's face when Rand asks "Anyone?" - Nyneave after Elayne says she's never had a friend before. - Egwene breaking down after realizing what'd been done to her to let her touch the pitcher (well this one's not so subtle lol) - Egwene after she realizes Maigan is the one in the cell next to her. Back straightens, jaw sets, she's on a mission now, more than she was before. Let's get some Egwene beating down some Seanchan soon! - Liandrin, just everything there. Speculations: - Do you think maybe Ishy wasn't actually in Rand's dream when Lanfear kicked him out? Wouldn't put it past her to make an image of him just to screw with Rand. - Ingtar mentions a room of artefacts that Turok keeps in Falme. Do you think maybe we're moving some Tear story bits here, like the redstone arch? - Along with that: Min's viewing. I'm starting to think the stabbing might happen in a dream or in said redstone arch. - Over/under on Moiraine's nephew and/or sister being a darkfriend? I leaning towards just the sister. - I noticed the some damane (like the one that can sense channelers) have a little leather padding under their a'dam - a sick "reward" for those that are more "well behaved"? - I really liked the portrayal of Ryma's weaves - as a Yellow she was using weaves to affect her enemies' bodies directly rather than to make fire/etc to throw at them. - Matt needs to get his dagger at some point. Maybe Siuane has brought it with her for some reason? That'd let Matt grab it to bring to Falme. There's even the possibility for the final healing of him, gifting him his memory holes and all. We do have 14 sisters there. (I just really want to see the start of Matt's glow up).
Totally agree that Lanfear might have faked Ishy in TAR to get to Rand. Such a great insight on Rymas weaves and manipulation of the body. I think Fain had the dagger last. I think it’s with the horn in Falme.
It would be interesting if Anvaere AND Barthanes are both Darkfriends, and sold out for the same reason (prominence of House Damodred), but neither knows it about the other. We're getting a lot of thematic stuff about *why* people swear to the Dark, and how bad a bargain it always ends up being; two people who both sold their souls to give the other what they thought would be most important to them, damning and destroying themselves by doing so, would be on theme. (Also we're definitely being set up for everyone who keeps yelling at Moiraine to TELL PEOPLE THINGS finding out exactly why she has such deeply ingrained secretive habits.)
There was a lot of trauma here in this episode, but I noticed 2 absolutely wonderful things that happened: 1- Nynaeve and Elayne hold hands to support each other for what they will need to do and 2- the renewed resolve showing in Egwene's face before it cuts to credits, just because the woman in the cell next to her finally speaks to her, trying to give her comfort. Hard episode to watch, but oh my.
That last scenes were really an emotional rollercoaster😢 I heard from another reaction that the show tends to parallel women channeling to water. Egwene pouring a cup of water for Renna is like her relinquishing her Power to another. The two most heart retching scenes for me are when Egwene was broken and she realized it, and when Ryma was collared on top of losing her Warder.
A pet theory about channelers, during a scene of damane, is a bit wrong. Rand was able to access saidin by surrendering to it, and had no control. Nynaeve accessed saidar without surrendering, and had no control.... Liandrin isn't a Sitter, or at least wasn't during Moiraine's "trial". (All 3 Red Seats were filled) That makes her cheekiness with Siuan a bit more interesting.
It do be like that huh...I know what you're feeling there at the end...as many amazing things as happened in this episode, by the end all your mind can remember is that back and forth rapid fire between Egwene and Ryma and you're left just stunned. Absolutely amazing writing, acting, and editing all the way through. Just ::chef's kiss::
Yesss I was also thinking of "There are four lights!" And while the book didn't make an entire episode out of it, it did happen and predated Chain of Command by 2 years. So there you go. You heard it here first. The TNG writers were Wheel of Time fans.
"The unbreakable Egwene has been broken." Nah, she's just been a little bent. I think hearing Maigan has given her the resolve to continue fighting. I would really like to see a Behind The Scenes video of Michael McElhatton having a cup of coffee with Xelia Mendes-Jones telling her what it's like to suddenly wake up one morning and having tens of thousands of people hating you!
Oh Jenny. Watching the show last night I immediately thought of you during the Kennels scenes, and my heart was in my throat. I was stunned, personally, at just how hard that scene hit even knowing what the Fingernail Tribe are all about from the books. And the acting skills of those two actresses was masterful. And I immediately thought, "I hope Jenny has someone close by for comfort, because this scene is going to absolutely destroy her." I haven't seen your reaction yet. About to push play. But I just know... you were literally first in my thoughts while watching the episode, and I hope you found the comfort and context you needed to restore inner equilibrium. Reading horror is one thing. Seeing it acted out... whuf.
Madeleine did an amazing job in this episode. I've watched it 3 times now and the raw emotion in Egwene's screams at the end hits me harder each time. It's something the books couldn't paint in my minds eye, but Madeleine made me feel the pain and frustration and tore at my soul.
I have a feeling that we might get some Egwene dreamwalking this season, like in TDR. It would make sense that being cut off from The Source right now, she would discover this Talent.
For Liandrin keeping her son old, I don't think that's what she intended. I think she more likely ignorantly said she wanted him to live, not to live healthily. As wishes normally work, you never think them through far emough to see exactly how your request could be granted but misconstrued.
Yeah, the Dark One usually does not grant near impossible wishes like that in 'usual' times (like pre-series). Even for a Forsaken, making Aludran young/healthy again is probably extremely difficult if not outright impossible with what we know of the AoL. Wishes like that for Darkfriends are usually something the Dark One tempts them as a possibility if the Last Battle is won by them.
I just realized, what if the secret to opening the Adam is to unheal it or cause it great pain. So Nynavene seeing Reyma getting captured let's her change her thinking to using The One Power to hurt instead of heal.
Omg. Ryma's scene was soo awesome as a fight scene and also so terrible. And the way Egwene cried at the end. Those sobbing noises. Kudos to Madeleine Madden. Holy shit. I could totally feel it. This was my fav episode so far even though it was so hard to watch. I was definitely white knuckling it through the last 20 mins of the show. I had to go wash my face too.
Oh I love your videos! Big fan of the books, 20+ years. I’m really enjoying the show and look toward to your thoughts each week. Thank you for sharing and taking time out of your vacation to keep the content coming 😊
We were emotionally impacted by those amazing performances. The torture was real and canon. This of all reactions was hardest to watch again after seeing the episode. However, it was necessary for catharsis later. On to DAES DAE’MAR next!
I still hold to my theory that blonde hair Damane with the Dead Eyes is either a recurring character or a main character. She shows up in just about every Damane channeling scene.
It may be a TV production thing. It's typical to do something like this if they want to reuse the same actress for a role across the season instead of hiring a bunch of different actresses, even if that would be more 'realistic'. The reason is that camera focus means that an actor is usually credited and paid differently from an extra, and a casting director usually does not want to amass too many recurring actors if they can only use one.
@@joeleek9976 I think Ryma targeted the sul'dam, which would hurt the damane, but as soon as another sul'dam took the bracer off, the damane would be released from that pain and then need to be a weapon again.
Jenny your recording equipment might not be your usual set up but your passion for the show and story remain top notch. As awful as it is to watch what is happening to Egwene think how utterly satisfying it will be to see what's coming for Renna and her friends. Kudos to the makeup team, you can literally see the trauma Egwene is experienced reflected on her face and increasingly bloodshot eyes. I thought it was very emotional the way Elaine and Nynaeve finally bonded over their mutual helplessness to intervene and save the yellow sister. If there is one thing Nynaeve respects its someone how sticks by their friends and I think by refusing to leave until Egwene is safe Elaine's has just shot up in Nynaeve's estimation. On the issue of Lanfear and Moiraine I don't think Lanfear is exactly jealous but more that after the last episode she had developed a sort of grudging respect for how cunning and ruthless Moiraine is. If she wants to bend Rand to her will willingly the last thing she needs is a skilled and dangerous counselor whispering into his ear. Nor can she just kill Moiraine as that would upset Rand and their 'deal'. One of the bright spots emotionally I mean is that with Logain we are starting to see Rand slowly painfully develop into someone who can get others to follow him. Moiraine tried coercion and bribery with Logain. Rand on the other hand can inspire even a gentled man who wants to die. Logain even seems genuinely concerned for Rand's wellbeing after her nearly burned himself out. Plus nice catch on how more potent and stronger Rand's weaves seem after he stops surrendering and instead seizes the one power.
I think there will be a good alignment between the aes sedai with Siuan in Cairhien and those who were with Siuan in Fal Dara in the books. Vérin, Alanna, Liandrin, and Anaiya are all mentioned or seen in Cairhien in this episode and all map onto Fal Dara.
I like the concept that you can surrender/grab either saidar or saidin. Nymaeve spends a long time grabbing saidar, so it makes sense that saidin can be surrendered to. I'm guessing that's where they got it from.
While watching Renna torturing Egwene, I just kept reminding myself of Renna's final scene from TGH, they need to retain that scene in the series, so viewers can recover from this.
What really bothers me is that the show is so good compared to other rubbish fantasies we have been getting lately and yet book readers continuously trying to demean it and criticise every single bit of it just because it doesn't match the books 😢 it is blessing to be a non book reader ❤ we all know they couldn't have apdated all the books, changes must be made to introduce balance and maintain an enjoyable story for both book and non book readers and with the budget constraints we should be grateful that it is being adapted in the first place...
@@isisneteru1013I enjoyed season 1 as a fantasy series on its own, better than anything I have recently watched, but this season is way better, 7.5 season 1 8.5 so far season 2.. but overall better than most garbage fantasies that came out recently over the past couple of years
Robert Jordan had difficulties writing women and the villains in the story. In other words, he SUCKED at it. The show is doing a terrific job of fleshing out our female protagonists and all the different villains. As a book reader, this is AWESOME....no issues with it at all. The problem is that literally everything else they are doing sucks. Rand, Mat, and Perrin are the main characters at this point of the story. I'm pretty sure Liandrin has more screen time than all 3 of them combined. If you've never read the books and you're enjoying the show that's awesome, but don't jump up and down on the folks who have honest criticisms about the way they are depicting a story a lot of us grew up reading. I guarantee if you read the books, you'll have a few criticisms of the show yourself.
@@nicodomeus4753 At this point in the season though I feel the only person we really haven't seen much of is Mat, and even this feels like it is slowly changing. The girls story is front-loaded because they had the White Tower to teach them stuff. But Rand and Perrin have had a lot of screen time and I personally feel decent character development in line with the books. Maybe by the season finale you will feel differently. My main gripe is Lan's arc and I really hope this improves over the next episodes and into S3. When Mat blooms he will BLOOM.
I think Liandrin’s desire to keep her son alive was sort of a monkey’s paw type wish. She didn’t think through all the ways he could be kept “alive” but not in a good way.
you said "don't do what ishy wants" when Min told Mat about Ishy 'wanting' him to go with Rand. But I think he did exactly what Ishy wanted - break the dragon by giving him hope then abandoning him again. And hurting Mat more in the process.
Yes!! ❤ ... and I just ABSOLUTELY LOOOVE FARRES FARRES !; my fellow "Swedish citizen " 🥰 First time I watch him act, since 25 ish years ago; when he was acting in Scandinavian shows. 😘 (Wow!; time sure does "FLY" 😂)
This episode poses a peculiar predicament. It was the best episode until yet. Even better than S02E05 in my opinion but I doubt I will ever see this episode on my Season 2 rewatch after the season ends. It just evokes a very visceral reaction from me. I almost cried but because I had read the book I knew what was coming but was prepared for it. Somehow I thought no matter how they picturized it, it couldn’t be as bad as it was in the books because we had access of Egwene’s thoughts and it could not be more terrifying than what i had imagined while reading the books. But the imagery of what was being done to her was just too much. The lines, the acting, the sul’dam ‘s manipulation (pretending to be her friend, feigning to have her best interests at heart, brainwashing and resorting to torture at slightest of resistance from Egwene and the saying ’good girl’ when she is finally broken) were so well done. Also I recall felling a slight relief when Egwene finally picked up the pitcher and drank water (I guess she must have not been allowed to drink water until she could pickup the pitcher) but when I saw that visceral scream of Egwene, I realised it wasn’t a victory. Egwene lost a battle of wills to her basic need TO STAY ALIVE. Rena not only managed to brainwash Egwene but also the viewers for a second into believing that the character they were rooting for actually broke. Turly a different brand of evil that is in my opinion as bad if not worse for what Dark One wishes to unleash onto the world.
I think what's even worse is Renna isn't pretending to be her friend. She sees her like a dog to be trained. And worse still she's executing even that sick perspective poorly - beating an animal to train it usually ends up with a pet that can turn on you. I'm just glad they didn't end it there with Egwene broken, but showed her resolve coming back after hearing Maigan.
Your strong willed = strong in the power theory is really interesting. Off the top of my head this would also apply to Siuan, Moiraine, Lanfear, and Logain.
I think when Suroth is referring to "it" she's talking about the tree, not Brother Book. Also, I'm positive there is more than one mention in the book of a correlation between strength in the power and strength of will and resolve. My theory is that is meant to be tied in some way to the particular vulnerabilities channelers have (like to certain Oaths, and certain rituals.) Also, on seeing it two or three times, couldn't help but notice how quick Lanfear got them out of there when Egwene "woke" in her dream and started talking to Rand. I don't think Lanfear intended that at all. I think Lanfear recognized immediately something peculiar about Egg and got the f**k out of there. This episode had some fun misdirects...like the little look Rhyma gives Elayne right before she goes out to face the Seanchan. I read that as, "this isn't about protecting a strong channeler or being heroic...I'm just better dead than letting the damned Daughter-Heir of Andor getting collared by the Seanchan." Also, in the books, Moiraine, in an internal monologue admits she didn't have a good idea on how to secure a teacher for Rand, I want to say this is late in book 5, right before the harbor incident. Because she lets on in a letter she knew all along who Jasin Nateel was, and had to admit that while she didn't like it, it was a better idea than she had. Maybe I'm misremembering, but I'm sure she even admits to using Logain as a teacher...then you couple that with one of the luminaries at the Wheel spotted the guitar-wielding Forsaken.... Here's my hot predict.... Show Asmodean is still our desert mentor, still mysteriously disappeared...but HE'S the one that comes back as Halima. Asmodean/Balthamel is a solid meld, in my opinion. Edit: Holy crap I just noticed Basan's death, the blade was made of air, but his blood was dripping off it. That's a pretty gnarly effect.
This reminded me of bits of Game of Thrones. Some things, brutal things, can be easier to read than to watch. Phenomenal writing and acting for all involved with the Egwene storyline. In the books, I sometimes underestimated her visceral hatred of the Seanchan, I don't think I could do now.
I know!! 😢 Having read the books, up to "Dragon Reborn"; (I'll start reading the series again, once the season is over...); I was a bit worried HOW they were going to explain the "torture of Egwene/Damane predicament"... , but they did SO GOOD!... in that horrible way.... I too was very uncomfortable, watching that... Loved Egwene's "LOOK" at end though.... lol....
@@blackpyxy9583 what a silly statement. I am black and I don't share that statement. if you feel sympathy for what a character is going through than that can be felt by anyone regardless of race. Most important world history is based on lies- all world history including American. I would suggest you read on thomas Sowell and the like. Open your eyes.
That was absolutely brutal. Although, it almost makes me wish I hadn’t read the books, because to not know what was coming, would have been interesting. I need an easier episode next week to recover. But, I don’t think I’ll get it.
Re: Liandrin's deal with the Dark. I see it like the old trope of deals with the devil. You ask for something, don't specify every aspect of it clearly, and the Evil one will find a way to give you waht you asked for, but in a messed up way. "I want eternal life" Okay "Wait, why do i have chronic crippling pain?" You just said life. Not health. 😳😫Silly Darkfriends.
Rend Weave I assume... Dang Ryma. What an beast! Love her. Loved the hand holding between Nynaeve and Elyane - and Egwene, oh Egwene! Knew this episode was going to gut us but man it was done so well. Also -- Do you think Mat didn't approach Rand because he saw Lan and the the Aes Sedai? Maybe he will go back to Min and demand she help him get Rand free to go to Falme and save their friends? Also - how much are you dying to see Addison's reaction to this one?!?
I am loving what they’re doing with Sul’dam in the show! In the books they always read as more entitled and snobbish, wearing those elaborate dresses rather then outright abusive warriors,
I haven't been a big fan of the show, but the last two episodes have done a lot to win me over. Ryma is everything I wanted out of an Ais Sedai on screen, Just like Avienda was for Aiel last episode. It seemed to me like she even used her expertise in healing to fold that Sul'dam like laundry. Egwene's torture was just as hard to watch as it was to read. I think shit is about to hit the fan in Cahrian to substitute the bit of regicide Thom isn't around to do. That came back to me when Rand found Matt pretty much exactly the same way he reunites with Thom in book 2. The thing is I'm not sure how it all goes wrong, and that's fun.
I don't think Liandrin made a deal to keep her son alive as an old person specifically, we don't know *when* she joined the dark. She could have made the deal when he was 30, cause she knew that he was going to eventually die before her. And she just didn't think it through. Her deal could have been something like "Keep my son from dying of old age" which doesn't mean "keep my son young". So basically she got first oathed by Ishy
In my head, it is pronounced ah-DAM , like sul-DAM. Of course, in my head I pronounce Nyneave's name Ni-Nee-ev . We all do it. It's always hard watching fantasy and sci-fi shows based on books for this reason
Long-time reader here. Love your videos and your (com)passion. About the pronunciation: We know how Aiel and Aes Sedai are pronounced. The glossary uses "eye" or "eyez" to show us that. But with a'dam, it gives us AYE-dam. It stands to reason, therefore, that it is pronounced like the sounds in "stay", "say", "away". Otherwise, the glossary would have said "EYE-dam". Just my 2 cents. ❤
This is why I always push back when people say ‘but RJ gave a pronunciation guide, so the audiobook narrators should have not made any errors!” Using words as a guide instead of actual phonetic notation is useless. If he meant it to be be pronounced as a long /a/ sound, he used the wrong word to show that. /AYE/ is an actual word, it is pronounced the same as the word /eye/. (Think “Aye aye captain”)
7:30 "How shall I gift it?" Was she talking about Loial or the tree he just sang? I wasn't sure on my first watch. It felt like she was too happy to have a pet Ogier to then just give him away. 25:18 This was the moment I started crying. Was somehow able to hold it together for Rima, but the second Egwene touched the vase the dam that had been building all episode broke.
I definitely felt she was talking about Loial. He's a special kind of slave after all, and Suroth wants to regain face. Gifting him to Turok would assumedly help with that.
I will die on the hill of ay-dam/ah-dam. There's no i anywhere in the word! (Also Falm is how I always pronounced it until the fandom corrupted me so this is my vindication)
Well Mat would know that Rand is the Dragon or that someone in their group is. I think Lan telling Alanna was him choosing Moiraine over Rand (ie which secret to tell) which Moirainne will be pissed about.
We don’t have the benefit of seeing in people’s heads like we did in the books, which might be part of it. I’m sure it’s also partially related to paring the books down for TV. And maybe that people silently keeping secrets is tricky to make good TV.
spoilers from the books... maybe instead of padan fain stabbing rand with the dagger, it's matt that does it. then the ishi battle happens soon after and with the 2 wounds fighting each other, that's how rand survives the stabbing,
The show pronunciations are really close to my head pronunciations. A’dam, Falme, da’covale. Except for “Nyneave” and “Tar Valon”. I always read Nyneave’s name as NIN-uh-vuh like the biblical city, and Tar VAL-un with emphasis on VAL, instead of Tar va-LON like Avalon.
I do have a question about the stuff that happened with Moirain and her sister. Why couldn’t she have at least taken a couple of days off just to go see her father before he died. I think she didn’t do it in the books because she was still in training, but since they’ve changed her age, that doesn’t work here.
My personal belief, given the change in Moiraine's age, is that she wasn't IN the tower to receive any messages, and by the time she could have received one, it was too late. 🤷♀️
There are some things in life that are too terrible to really understand. This episode shows what slavery really does to a person. Efforts by people in politics to cover up and minimize the horror of slavery are as despicable as the Seanchen,
Matt stabbing Rand - Late series spoilers below! Spoiler warning! . . . . . . . . I can't remember how he gets it in the books, but surely Matt stabbing Rand is the SHow's way of making sure Rang gets the Mashadar-wound. Then he gets the Shadow-wound from a Myrdraal sword or something and that's how he gets the two conflicting wounds and the idea of how to Cleanse.
Ryma Sedai's performance was so freaking perfect. What an amazing actress!
She was amazing, I knew she was going to be perfect, and they would break my heart.
She is the best Ais Sedai of the show so far imo.
It’s a very well acted moment.
excellent observation I caught that too.
A tough bit in a devastating episode was when Renna tells Eggy she’s special and we’re left reminded of how Egwene was left out of praise at the Tower because they kept telling her how special Nyn was. This whole episode…. Wow.
Not just the best episode of WoT so far, this is one of the best episodes of television I've ever seen! So many examples of masterclass story-telling.

“Each faceless Seanchan that Egwene struck down seemed to be Renna in her mind's eye.”
“Egwene was part of the fires that burned in the Tower, bloodying the sky with their flames, painting the air with their smoke.”
“The White Tower, the sacred dwelling of the Aes Sedai, was under attack. They were all in danger, a danger greater than death.”
“Egwene defended herself and each woman in the Tower. She would MAKE the Seanchan withdraw.”
“This raid had to cost them.”
Chapter 41 A Fount of Power, The Gathering Storm
Thinking of this was the only way I made it through. It might take a few seasons, but Egwene gets hers in the end.
I think Liandrin said that she wanted her son to live with the intent that he would be restored, but Ishy took the statement at face value.
Yeah, I was thinking that too, like something out of Greek Mythology: you asked for eternal life NOT eternal life *and* eternal youth.
This was my feeling too. The books are full of times that dark friends were disappointed to see how the things they believed they were promised were twisted into lies they hadn't anticipated.
They had no right to make Barthanes so utterly adorable.
...and the actor's Gay... 🙄
Typical.... lol....
Btw.... he's just such an AMAZING eye candy 🍬 ; and he's been in "Shadowhunters" and "Game Of Trones"...
(Shadowhunters being his best and most versatile performance, I think ❤)
Yes!; looking forward to follow him.... 😇
The Amyrlin is bringing 14 sitters because this is exactly "The Amyrlin's Visit" from the beginning of tGH switched locations from Fal Dara to Cairhien, and 14 AS (2 from each Ajah) is how many she brought there.
This episode was all around great, but I especially loved seeing Ryma fighting. She knows exactly how to hurt people directly because she’s a healer
yep - just break their bones and melt their faces and turn them inside out
I know people praised Zoë Robins for her portrayal of Nynaeve during Ep3 and the Arches, but now seeing Madeleine Madden's performance..
8:05 "I knew it was coming and I still hate it."
THAT is what they should have titled this episode.
- Rand's response of just looking at his hands when Lanfear asks "What makes you think I can't trust you?"
- Lanfear's face when Rand asks "Anyone?"
- Nyneave after Elayne says she's never had a friend before.
- Egwene breaking down after realizing what'd been done to her to let her touch the pitcher (well this one's not so subtle lol)
- Egwene after she realizes Maigan is the one in the cell next to her. Back straightens, jaw sets, she's on a mission now, more than she was before. Let's get some Egwene beating down some Seanchan soon!
- Liandrin, just everything there.
Speculations:
- Do you think maybe Ishy wasn't actually in Rand's dream when Lanfear kicked him out?
That episode is something else. The performances put in by Nyokabi Gethaiga (Ryma Sedai) and Madeleine Madden (Egwene) alone are award worthy.
It could be incredible if Amazon create a 2 more special episode for season 2, it will blow all ours minds !
This episode killed me, so emotional. What a fantastic piece of tv even if it was hard to watch at times.
Oh Jenny. Watching the show last night I immediately thought of you during the Kennels scenes, and my heart was in my throat. I was stunned, personally, at just how hard that scene hit even knowing what the Fingernail Tribe are all about from the books. And the acting skills of those two actresses was masterful.
And I immediately thought, "I hope Jenny has someone close by for comfort, because this scene is going to absolutely destroy her."
I haven't seen your reaction yet.
I was actually thinking that too.
Oh, excellent point!
Can’t wait for Fortuona may she live forever
"There are four lights, motherf*er"
As a heads up, Renna's actor goes by He/They (in that preferred order)
We were emotionally impacted by those amazing performances. The torture was real and canon. This of all reactions was hardest to watch again after seeing the episode. However, it was necessary for catharsis later. On to DAES DAE’MAR next!
I still hold to my theory that blonde hair Damane with the Dead Eyes is either a recurring character or a main character.
She shows up in just about every Damane channeling scene.
She was there at the beginning and end of the seen with the aes sedai being taken. I was under the impression the yellow nuked her.
Possibly Alivira maybe
Alivia
They're doing a FANTASTIC job of making us hate the Seanchan!
The response is completely understandable. It’s so gut wrenching 😭
Best line: There are 4 lights. I almost fell off my chair!
it was so smart of Ryma to go after the sul'dam rather than the damane. Such a good ep but so tough to watch
And you could see the damane feeling it.
I think this is the second 'Nynaeve feat' that was foreshadowed. Her saying 'it needs to be Healed', instead of tinkering Elayne.
Watching your reactions made me cry again after crying to the show.
The emotion in your new avatar really comes through.
Tbf it greatly picked up this season. Season 1 was really rough. I'm enjoying it so much now.
@@isisneteru1013I enjoyed season 1 as a fantasy series on its own, better than anything I have recently watched, but this season is way better, 7.5 season 1 8.5 so far season 2.. but overall better than most garbage fantasies that came out recently over the past couple of years
Exactly and the show is actually inspiring people to read the books.
It's a very powerful episode from a non-bookreader!👍👍👍 Egwene deserves that water after all that torture!!💦💦💦🎡🎡🎡⌚️⌚️⌚️
Ishy is definitely a gift to the readers from Rafe and Sarah.
Yes!! ❤ ... and I just ABSOLUTELY LOOOVE FARRES FARRES !; my fellow "Swedish citizen " 🥰
First time I watch him act, since 25 ish years ago; when he was acting in Scandinavian shows. 😘
(Wow!; time sure does "FLY" 😂)
Egwene was in TAR, either by going there herself as a dreamer, or being pulled into it by Lanfear
Your strong willed = strong in the power theory is really interesting. Off the top of my head this would also apply to Siuan, Moiraine, Lanfear, and Logain.
Nooo rush. Just patiently waiting for the review video. *whistles*
I think when Suroth is referring to "it" she's talking about the tree, not Brother Book. Also, I'm positive there is more than one mention in the book of a correlation between strength in the power and strength of will and resolve. My theory is that is meant to be tied in some way to the particular vulnerabilities channelers have (like to certain Oaths, and certain rituals.)
Also, on seeing it two or three times, couldn't help but notice how quick Lanfear got them out of there when Egwene "woke" in her dream and started talking to Rand. I don't think Lanfear intended that at all. I think Lanfear recognized immediately something peculiar about Egg and got the f**k out of there.
This episode had some fun misdirects...like the little look Rhyma gives Elayne right before she goes out to face the Seanchan. I read that as, "this isn't about protecting a strong channeler or being heroic...I'm just better dead than letting the damned Daughter-Heir of Andor getting collared by the Seanchan."
Also, in the books, Moiraine, in an internal monologue admits she didn't have a good idea on how to secure a teacher for Rand, I want to say this is late in book 5, right before the harbor incident.
I had the same idea about Asmodean/Halima. He has a short but important role and maybe his new body is a punishment for helping the other side.... 🤷♀
This was such a great episode! I bet we get flicker flicker to get them from Cairhien to Falme
I wondered if Matt stabbing teams could be in flicker flicker.
I avoided rereading Egwene's capture in the books, but seeing it on screen is heartbreaking
I know!! 😢
Having read the books, up to "Dragon Reborn"; (I'll start reading the series again, once the season is over...); I was a bit worried HOW they were going to explain the "torture of Egwene/Damane predicament"... , but they did SO GOOD!... in that horrible way....
I too was very uncomfortable, watching that...
Loved Egwene's "LOOK" at end though.... lol....
As a Black American, watching Egwene get broken like that just hits different. 😢
Stop with u nonsense Here ..nothing to do with black women and i am
Black man talkinf
Just curious why the specifics on "black American" how does that relate?
@@eds464if you don’t know go learn American history
Yup.
Love the expanded role of Lanfear. Much better than the books
That was absolutely brutal. Although, it almost makes me wish I hadn’t read the books, because to not know what was coming, would have been interesting. I need an easier episode next week to recover. But, I don’t think I’ll get it.
You are such an ethical person. It is noted and appreciated.
Re: Liandrin's deal with the Dark.
I see it like the old trope of deals with the devil. You ask for something, don't specify every aspect of it clearly, and the Evil one will find a way to give you waht you asked for, but in a messed up way.
"I want eternal life"
Okay
"Wait, why do i have chronic crippling pain?"
You just said life. Not health.
😳😫Silly Darkfriends.
This was a hard episode to watch. I had to make jokes while watching this because of how it was making me feel.
Yellow sister, that's why she could do all that to their bodies.
Glad to touch the water jug? Devastated to touch it…😢 oh my gosh!
Small fyi - the actor for Renna prefers he/they/them
I don't think Liandrin made a deal to keep her son alive as an old person specifically, we don't know *when* she joined the dark.
She could have made the deal when he was 30, cause she knew that he was going to eventually die before her. And she just didn't think it through. Her deal could have been something like "Keep my son from dying of old age" which doesn't mean "keep my son young".
So basically she got first oathed by Ishy
(eye-dahm) is a type of cheese (eidam). :))
In my head, it is pronounced ah-DAM , like sul-DAM. Of course, in my head I pronounce Nyneave's name Ni-Nee-ev . We all do it. It's always hard watching fantasy and sci-fi shows based on books for this reason
„That’s gross“ (at the suldam being contorted/broken in the fight)
Me: „.. that’s just how I sleep, it’s really comfortable..“😅
If you compare Josha's physique in Season 1 and 2, our boy has clearly been going to the gym at Foregate

I also thought she was talking about the tree.
I definitely felt she was talking about Loial. He's a special kind of slave after all, and Suroth wants to regain face. Gifting him to Turok would assumedly help with that.
Think only the Empress can own sung wood. So sending it to someone would be a curse.
Alanna said something foreshadowing her future behavior.
Ryma, servant of all.
Seeing the slave keeping Seanchan suldam in action makes their American accents both extremely disturbing and fitting.
The look at the camera at 29:29 is everything
I will die on the hill of ay-dam/ah-dam. There's no i anywhere in the word! (Also Falm is how I always pronounced it until the fandom corrupted me so this is my vindication)
Last season Liandrin was not a Sitter, that probably hasn't changed without them telling us.
I think that Liandrin was separately in Cairhien, which is why she approached Siuan and questioned why they were there.
Lanfear is so deliciously EXTRA!
And oh yeah, you don't mess with a Yellow.
I'm curious why everyone is so open. Lan tells people about the dragon. Moraine was open with rand. Rand tells mat he's the dragon. It's crazy.
Well Mat would know that Rand is the Dragon or that someone in their group is. I think Lan telling Alanna was him choosing Moiraine over Rand (ie which secret to tell) which Moirainne will be pissed about.
@samanthaa.6055 I'm just saying that in the books, everyone played things much closer to the chest. Everyone was more secretive about their abilities.
We don’t have the benefit of seeing in people’s heads like we did in the books, which might be part of it. I’m sure it’s also partially related to paring the books down for TV. And maybe that people silently keeping secrets is tricky to make good TV.
I wonder if Mat will give Rand his side wound with the dagger instead of Fain....perhaps to stop Rand from doing something bad
spoilers from the books...
maybe instead of padan fain stabbing rand with the dagger, it's matt that does it. then the ishi battle happens soon after and with the 2 wounds fighting each other, that's how rand survives the stabbing,
Most people makes sandwichs too dry. So yes buttering or putting mustard/mayo/sauce on both sides of the sandwich will make it better.
When Lanfear and Rand visit Egwene, I took it as them going into Egwene's dream (not Egwene Dreaming per se)
Why did Lan tell such a stupid and easily disproven lie about being banned from the White Tower?
Egwene’s first trip to Tel'aran'rhiod😊
This episode was ROUGH. Great but oh my god Egwene 😭😭😭😭
Hot takes....they said a'dam and dacovale how i pronounce them.
Me too. As well as da'covale.
I know that you told us there'd be lip tracking issues, but I kept thinking that Lanfear got to you and sewed your lips shut.
My guess as to Suroth's reaction is probably something like, only the Empress may own a woodsinging ogier. So she has committed a faux pas.
There are some things in life that are too terrible to really understand. This episode shows what slavery really does to a person. Efforts by people in politics to cover up and minimize the horror of slavery are as despicable as the Seanchen,
And that definitely shows WHY RJ chose a southern drawl accent for the Seanchan.
