Fly Fishing: An alternative to the Blood Knot... the Hesse Knot!

  • If there was a favorite knot award, this would get it! I've been using this knot for more than 25 since it was shown to me by a friend and guide, Bob Hesse. I've used it with mono or fluoro and ranging from 7X to 40#! It hasn't failed me and provides a clean, simple, transition between lighter and heavier materials.
    If you know what the "real name" of the knot is... send it my way. Not that I'll change what I call it but at least the 25 year old mystery will be solved. Thanks and tight lines!

    Thank you! I’ve completely switched over, this knot is so much easier and I don’t think I’ll have to keep coming back to a UA-cam video to remind myself how to do it.

    He was trying to teach you an Albright, but instead of only 2 wraps back up, I was taught to go back up the same amount of times I came down. The amount of wraps depend on the size line. Bigger line, less turns. Smaller line, more turns. When I come back up, I go in between the wraps downs. Thanks for sharing 👍

      I absolutely love this knot! You're 100% right on larger the line the less wraps and lighter the more. Takes a little finesse to figure out the right combo! 🥳

      It's different than an Albright. It's an Alberto Knot.

    Thanks for teaching us newbies this knot! It’s simple, quick to tie, seems to be comparable in strength to the blood knot, and is far less frustrating to tie than the blood knot. I also like its smooth low profile to help slide through rod guides. I’m a definite fan. Also; as you replied previously to James (below), it stands to reason that there is also flexibility in how many wraps to use for both lines based on their size which also makes this knot versatile. Thanks so much; I’ll definitely use it!

      Yeah at the blood not drives me absolutely crazy! I've been using this knot for more than 30 years and have caught every species that swims on it. It's easy and it works fantastic!!

      Goggle the surgeons knot , simple to tie , and strength is equal to a blood knot . To state it simply, take your two tag ends . Align them parallel to each other approximately 6” of line make a loop , pass the tag end of the line and the leader or tippet through the circle three times , lubricate with saliva and d pull tight. The knot shown in the video is an Albright knot , typically used to attach backing to fly line..

    Exactly like an Albright Knot. This is an excellent replacement for the double surgeons knot when tying on tippet.

      Oh my god, the smaller the tippet the better this knot gets! Love it!!

    Called the Albright knot. A stronger version, and for lines to leaders of any material or diameter, is the Alberto (crazy alberto) which just involves doing a few more wraps and then going back down the SAME amount of wraps and in between the original wrap grooves (instead of just the 2 you did). The Alberto is stronger than the Albright but also work for braid to thin leader. 🤙 either way great knot!

      After I posted this video I learned the name of the knot! Absolutely love it! I'll have to check out the Alberto! Thanks for the comment!

    If you’d like to use one of the ends as a tag end is that a problem, and if not or so which end should you use as the tag? Many thanks!

    • @TroutTornado
      @TroutTornado  Місяць тому +1

      great question, you could use one of the tags and if you did it would be the heavier test..

    Looks good! Does the number of wraps change with smaller or bigger diameter lines?

    • @TroutTornado
      @TroutTornado  2 роки тому +1

      Great question, yes... typically I do more wraps on smaller diameter lines. For example with 5x I would do 5 wraps and then 3, with 8# I would do 4 and 2. It takes a little judgement and there are no hard rules. I would recommend just getting some different tippets, and spending some time on the couch practicing! It will be clear what works and what doesn't! Such a great knot!!

      A nailless nail knot does not work well on mono or flouro. It is best for backing to fly line connection

    Question,I’m 70 years old,been fishing just about as long,was wondering while tying tippet to leader,would two clinch knots work or would the leader or tippet material cut thru the knot.

    • @TroutTornado
