An Easier Way to Tie a Blood Knot

- The Blood knot is one of the best knots to secure 2 pieces of like size fishing line. It isn't an overly complicated knot. It is really just 2 clinch knots sliding into one another but to complete a blood knot can require a bit of dexterity and practice. Brian has a unique way of building the blood knot and it just may make it a bit easier for you.
"...this is the part of the blood knot where it really helps to have a third hand, I'm a fisherman so I use my mouth quite a bit." Truer words could not have been spoken.
Regardless of how it is tied, it takes practice to get the dexterity and muscle memory down pat for sure!
I think all of us can relate 😂😂😂
@@mossycreekflyfishingespecially in early spring, you probably snap the first 5 before you get the hang of it. 😅😅
YEP!
I never comment on these tutorials, and I have WATCHED a ton of them... Best one I have seen on the blood knot, and I have used it Steelhead fishing a lot. GREAT knot. lifesaver video. Thank you "Mossy Creek Fly Fishing " man.
Glad it was helpful for you!
That is the most simple way I have seen. Thank you. Most tricks do not make a blood knot.
Nice trick for tying a frustrating knot Brian! Gonna use it from now on.
You bet!
This works a treat. I taught myself this same hack about 40 years ago when my third hand got lost somewhere.
Thanks so much it has been a constant challenge and getting the better of me I watched your video twice and I can’t fricken believe how easy that is. Again thank you
Thank you, I have been struggling with this one, particularly when I have to re tie it in the field with semi numb fingers. Excellent tip, and a much better method overall..!
genius! Really, really helpful
Glad you think so!
Thanks, that’s a much easier way to tie it!
The concept is easy for sure. Hope it simplifies things for you!
Thanks for demonstrating this I now realize that after 30 or more years someone once taught me how to tie a blood knot this way.
Great hack - love it. Also looks like a great way to tie tippet sections to specific lengths. That’s a constant source of frustration for me. It’d be great to see a video demonstrating that!
Thank you! I have sensitivity issues in my hands and I can tie the blood knot using this method with no issues.
Terrific! I've always struggled to tie a blood knot. My mind knows perfectly well what to do but my fingers can't always seem to follow. I've watched several videos on YT, all pretty good at making the blood easier to tie. Your method seems to me to be the easiest to both remember and execute. Thanks for that!
We hope it works out well for you. Of course with smaller sized tippet that is more challenging to see it will still take some practice.
Wow, I have struggled with this knot, this looks way easier! Thank you
Clever to fold the wraps over themselves. My Captain showed me the original way which has always been awkward. Thx!
That is a great way to do the knot. I have an easy way, but this may just be even better!! Thanks for sharing. Gonna favorite this one.
You bet!
Nice I'll give this a try although the simple surgeon cinch works well too and very strong.
Awesome video thanks! I will try this for sure.
Excellent. We hope it will simplify it for you.
This is freakin GENIUS! 👍🏻👍🏻
Excellent method for making the blood knot simple! Thanks!!!
And those giant spools behind u are very cool
I would have thought most people without a toothpick or something inserted for that loop, would be tying this method. used it for years but went to double surgeons for cold weather/water since it just as strong , much simpler and reallly not that bulky…good demonstration of the blood knot here
I'm gonna try this out. Thanks! I always have an issue with the hole closing up.
Glad to help!
Nicely done!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you that was extremely helpful
Excellent. Thanks for sharing!
The next time I tie a blood knot I'll try your method, with my shaky hands I have difficulty tying the knot I have been using.
We hope it helps!!
Best way I've seen thanks for the onsite 👍😁🎣
Glad you enjoyed it
Great technique. Thanks
You are genius!
Creating and maintaining a target tag insert loop is the hardest part of the knot for me, closely followed by seating the knot without losing it.
Wow! This is an awesome tip! Thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Wow! That really helped me. Thanks for sharing.
Glad it helped!
I love it!
Thanks!
I wish someone showed me this 50 years ago!
Great tip, the lines were much easier to manage.
This is brilliant!!!! Gonna try this!!!
Thanks!
This is awesome. Just wish I'd seen it before I spend several hours practicing the "normal" way. Duhhh...
That's brilliant.
Very cool ill give this a go, cheers
I like it. Will definitely give it a try
Please do!
Interesting, going to try that, thanks for posting.
You are most welcome.
WOW is that simplified, I’m definitely trying that. One question: when you overlap to form the big loop, does in make a difference if you go under or over the line your holding in your left hand.
It doesn't matter if you form the loop going over or under, but when you are putting your tag ends through the loop you create, be mindful not to unwrap a tag. Hope this makes sense and is helpful.
Nice I will give it a try ...it's a challenge trying to tie it wit 2lb test 👊👊
Very smart😳 Sometimes i almost break my fingers
Thank you for sharing 👍👍👍🖖
Thanks for watching!
We all know how to tie a fisherman's knot. A blood knot is simply 2 fisherman's knots that appose each other.
loved it, great tip, thanks...
Glad it was helpful!
Love trying new knots. This one gets tested on Friday
Hope it works well for you.
This is a great method! When pulling out the loop that becomes the target for the tag ends, is it ever a concern that you haven't pulled the center point of the twists? If you haven't pulled the center loop, won't there be uneven knots that cinch together?
If you get too far from the center it can be a problem. You want to shoot for the center as best you can.
Thanks for the demo! What do you do if you want more wraps on one side due to differences in diameter of the two lines that you are tying together? I assume that you pull the loop out from a different place. Have you tried this?
You can certainly look and count wraps. If tying 3x to 4x and you want 1 or 2 extra wraps on the smaller sized tippet you can offset the loop you form by a few wraps for sure.
Does it matter which line you make the opening in (you used yellow one) but if I had, say braid on one side and fluoro on the other, would the opening be with the braid?
When you form the loop and you start to try and tease out the loop usually the one on top pulls up, it won't really matter you just want to try to grab in the center so the number of wraps on each side will be symmetrical. Generally you want a wrap or 2 more on the side with smaller diameter tippet but if you are using like size/same size tippet it will be strong if its off by 1 or 2 wraps.
nice one - thank you for sharing! Can you use this knot to connect two pieces of nylon: the shorter piece that holds the hook to the main line for trolling fishing? Or it there another one for that?
Very cool
I was taught this same way while in college. That was over 40 years ago. Funny how generations repeat the same things that were done generations ago and think they found something. Not just in fishing.
Thank you.
Cool. Thanks
Why so many wraps? Ohhhhhh, because you are wrapping both ends at the same time essentially. Very neat.
Thank you!!!🎣🎣🎣😃
Awesome thank you 🙏🏻
You are so welcome, thanks for watching!
This is the way my father taught me
The problem with a blood knot is line memory and the short working tags quickly work against the knot tyer. The tag ends jump and spin, often the first seated tag climbs out of the loop hole when making wraps for the final tag. Also, the entire first, seated tag and counterwraps will often spin over themselves in counter rotation, confusing the tyer with a birds nest of monofilament and drawing down on the open loop made for the second tag. You really should be proud of yourself. This is an exemplery example of critical thinking applied to a challenge issue.
Good tip
I haven’t tried this, but does it matter which line you pull to make the loop? I wouldn’t think so. I was just curious.
Either line should work for you.
Thanks!!!
You are welcome!
Nice
I want to learn without use the mouth. Can anybody do it.?🤔
Don’t think so Bruce
