  • Noise randomly began ~3000 miles after trans swap. Whine is still audible when driving normally at all rpms, although quite faint. Valve body is a reverse pattern billet transbrake with fixed line pressure set to ~180psi. Torque converter is a single disc billet lockup 4,000 stall custom converter.

      It's the fluid feed for the torque converter inside the trans. You have to jet it down to prevent blown seals in the torque.

    Is it just me or is that converter really far forward. Do you have a spacer between the the crank and flexplate?

      No spacer, I’m running a custom converter from Jake’s Performance. They had my measurement of .880” from back of engine to converter pad and built it accordingly. With converter all the way in trans (over and inch inside bellhousing), I came up with about .120” converter clearance. New flexplate im running came up with .180” and some washers got me back to that ~.120” range. This is a 9.5” converter, maybe it’s small size makes it look further forward than most stock 11” verters

    • @NickKotis_
      @NickKotis_  6 місяців тому +1

      If there is any vibration (which there probably will be), and the converter is clearly out of balance to a degree, you are going to wipe your front pump bushing. I would replace the bolt, before you end up having to pull the trans...

    • @NickKotis_
      @NickKotis_  9 місяців тому +1

      I'm assuming the amount of give on the crappy ebay flexplate I was using contributed to the issue. Also, the cheap provided flexplate bolts from ebay I used were really thick, and actually imprinted on the converter. It is entirely possible/probable that this warped the surface that the lockup clutch rides against, causing multiple downstream issues. I didn't ask Jake to give me a rundown of what was broken when I sent it back for a refresh, but once I got my new unit and installed it with an SFI flexplate and some thin arp flexplate bolts and measured for clearance, I've had no issues since.

      @@NickKotis_ Mine might be completely different because it's just as loud in N if not louder. I have there lvl 5 trans and there triple disc however its built off the same core as your single.I just thought it was really strange that I just put this triple in and now 200 miles later its making this noise. I was at .128 pull out. Circle D plate and all arp hardware. How long did you drive it like this? Did it do it all the time or worse when warm etc?

    • @NickKotis_
      @NickKotis_  9 місяців тому

      @@TheDevin918 All I could say is to double check that your flexplate to converter bolts are still torqued to spec, I've had those walk out before too and cause some noise, especially in N. Other than that, the 4l80e's are noisy regardless, so it also might not be anything. Unless its actually as loud as what's in my vid, then its definitely something... goodluck

    • @TheDevin918

       @NickKotis_ I figured it out, I'm running their high flow filter and the mesh inside was loose enough that it had sucked up and formed a balloon/bubble/pocket in the neck of tube inside the filter and what little debris it had caught was all confined to that small tube area and was restricting flow. New ac delco paper filter and completely gone now.

    Probably a spacing issue, not correctly spaced, 1/8 in to 3/16ths from converter to flexplate

    • @NickKotis_
      @NickKotis_  2 роки тому +1

      .120” measured clearance here, but converter bolt loosened up and I re-torqued before this vid. Stator/pump ended up being wiped.

    • @euromo7

      But when you tighten the bolts doesn’t it just bring the converter flush to flex plate?

    • @NickKotis_
      @NickKotis_  2 роки тому

      @@euromo7 Yes it does, but the converter pulled out of the pump .120” before hitting the flexplate, which is in spec to what my torque converter manufacturer reccomended

    Mine was loose bolts that connect the fly wheel to the torque converter. Took them out one by one and added lock tite.

    • @NickKotis_
      @NickKotis_  2 роки тому

      Before this video, I had a TC bolt loosen up as well. Used red loctite and torqued to max spec for the grade 8 bolts I had, still busted loose. Grade 10.9 bolt allowed me to torque 20 ft/lbs more, no issues since.

    • @jamessebastian9822

      Yes sir, the bolts from fiywheel to torque converter backed out and made a horrible squealing noise. Removed the lower cover and removed each bolt one at a time. Add locktite and tighten as best I could. Turned flywheel with a screw driver, slow going but got it done.

      Low fluid in the converter I've ran into this many times don't waste your time on any other possibilty drain and fill and top off the transmission fluid and make sure your oil viscosity is correct it will temporarily fix it until a shop tunes it up but the sound will go away top off with some cut in fluid for the tranny and the engine it will ream it down to spec like a lathe

      Trans pump was wore, but due to the sound worsening in gear, the *main* problem (specifically regarding the audible noise) was most likely a converter issue.

    You have to put a smaller supply jet in the transmission to not blow up the torque converter.
