4l80e Torque Converter Whine/Squeal/Whir
Noise randomly began ~3000 miles after trans swap. Whine is still audible when driving normally at all rpms, although quite faint. Valve body is a reverse pattern billet transbrake with fixed line pressure set to ~180psi. Torque converter is a single disc billet lockup 4,000 stall custom converter.

2011 Camaro SS TSP Stage 4 “F35” Cam Start and Idle
Just had my 1995 Audi's tranny oil changed and it started doing this 4 days later. Dealer flushed the transmission, but it still does this. I think the torque converter is trashed due to them filling the transmission with fully synthetic oil (yellow) instead of the Dexron II mineral oil (red) and the torque converter friction plates got damaged. Now the dealer wants to switch the oil back to Dexron II, but I think its too late. The damage is done.
Ouch
It’s a 95 Audi whoever thought it was a good idea to change the fluid has to be a lil tarded
What lifters did you use?
Morel 6504 (LS7 style)
Thanks for the video i have a 02 suburban with the 4l80e does the same thing dont no if its the pump or the converter it shifts great every time
It’s the converter and it’s about to send Metal thru your transmission if you do not replace it soon. Ask me how I know.
Damn id think it was a bad wheel hub
Mine does a sound like there’s rocks in it, making my truck vibrate at a certain rpm
Oh no I started dancing.. can’t say what’s wrong with it though
Holy WOBBLE Batman
Boy she sounds mean
Fuug my e350 make this sound when start but goes alway in couple seconds 😩
Was test driving to possibly buy car & seems like the revving-up had some whirr sound to it. I thought it was a bit odd but now I realize. 👍
You have to put a smaller supply jet in the transmission to not blow up the torque converter.
1 out of 3 bolt snapped off can I still drive it with only 3 bolt holding the torque converter?
If there is any vibration (which there probably will be), and the converter is clearly out of balance to a degree, you are going to wipe your front pump bushing. I would replace the bolt, before you end up having to pull the trans...
Do torque converters leak?
The torque converter is near empty
Sounds like Shemp from the 3 Stooges.
I have this problem rn 😢
ive had 3 different stalls for 4l80e and they all have made this noise. different companies and everything. the exact same noise
It's the fluid feed for the torque converter inside the trans. You have to jet it down to prevent blown seals in the torque.
What do you expect there is no oil
I don't even know how to respond to this...
What did it end up being? I have a jakes converter that looks identical to that and it just randomly started doing it…
I'm assuming the amount of give on the crappy ebay flexplate I was using contributed to the issue. Also, the cheap provided flexplate bolts from ebay I used were really thick, and actually imprinted on the converter. It is entirely possible/probable that this warped the surface that the lockup clutch rides against, causing multiple downstream issues. I didn't ask Jake to give me a rundown of what was broken when I sent it back for a refresh, but once I got my new unit and installed it with an SFI flexplate and some thin arp flexplate bolts and measured for clearance, I've had no issues since.
@@NickKotis_ Mine might be completely different because it's just as loud in N if not louder. I have there lvl 5 trans and there triple disc however its built off the same core as your single.I just thought it was really strange that I just put this triple in and now 200 miles later its making this noise. I was at .128 pull out. Circle D plate and all arp hardware. How long did you drive it like this? Did it do it all the time or worse when warm etc?
@@TheDevin918 All I could say is to double check that your flexplate to converter bolts are still torqued to spec, I've had those walk out before too and cause some noise, especially in N. Other than that, the 4l80e's are noisy regardless, so it also might not be anything. Unless its actually as loud as what's in my vid, then its definitely something... goodluck
@NickKotis_ I figured it out, I'm running their high flow filter and the mesh inside was loose enough that it had sucked up and formed a balloon/bubble/pocket in the neck of tube inside the filter and what little debris it had caught was all confined to that small tube area and was restricting flow. New ac delco paper filter and completely gone now.
@@TheDevin918 Glad to hear it was a simple fix. I'm using an ac delco filter as well.
Sure would be cool if people actually showed results on dyno pulls instead of just leading people on
Sure would be cool if you knew how to read the video description
@@NickKotis_my bad didn’t see it at first 😂😂
@@jordanparker8359 You're the third person who didn't see it, I guess I should've just thrown up my dyno sheet at the end
Torque converter spaced too far out.
What was the solution?
I think i found the twin sister for my car😢
Great horsepower gains. I made 475rwhp/459rwtq on a stage 2 TSP cam.
Mine just started making a knocking noise out of nowhere but only does it when I start my truck then goes away after a couple minutes. Any idea what it could be?
Piston slap noise probably goes away after warming up
That converter is not spaced right at all. I bet the front pump is trash and that’s the noise
Low fluid in the converter I've ran into this many times don't waste your time on any other possibilty drain and fill and top off the transmission fluid and make sure your oil viscosity is correct it will temporarily fix it until a shop tunes it up but the sound will go away top off with some cut in fluid for the tranny and the engine it will ream it down to spec like a lathe
What does it sound like in the car that’s what I want to know
Will it still make the whine noise and not slip or shift have issues shifting.
Probably a spacing issue, not correctly spaced, 1/8 in to 3/16ths from converter to flexplate
.120” measured clearance here, but converter bolt loosened up and I re-torqued before this vid. Stator/pump ended up being wiped.
But when you tighten the bolts doesn’t it just bring the converter flush to flex plate?
@@euromo7 Yes it does, but the converter pulled out of the pump .120” before hitting the flexplate, which is in spec to what my torque converter manufacturer reccomended
Mine was loose bolts that connect the fly wheel to the torque converter. Took them out one by one and added lock tite.
Before this video, I had a TC bolt loosen up as well. Used red loctite and torqued to max spec for the grade 8 bolts I had, still busted loose. Grade 10.9 bolt allowed me to torque 20 ft/lbs more, no issues since.
Loose flywheel bolts will cause this whining noise?
Yes sir, the bolts from fiywheel to torque converter backed out and made a horrible squealing noise. Removed the lower cover and removed each bolt one at a time. Add locktite and tighten as best I could. Turned flywheel with a screw driver, slow going but got it done.
CHEVY GM ALL WAYS HAS THAT PROBLEM AND ALSO REAR END
Dude why no numbers????

@@NickKotis_ thank you! Sorry I missed it. Love the numbers. Looking to cam my ls3 swapped e30 bmw.
@@flatbedfreddy2911 haha all good bro. Tbh this cam was too much for the 3.42 gears and the manual, dead until 4k. Worked good with a high stall converter (swapped tr6060 for a 4l80e). New smaller cam is way better around town (231/234 115 +5), pulls hard from 3k-6k.
@@NickKotis_ yes I'm sure... but from 4k rpm to 7k rpm it had to pull hard with the manual?
@@Ws6Ms It was a monster, I do miss that setup for sure
Whatever cam/exhaust combo you have is perfect 👍
I was thinking the same thing last lol
You mean stock?
Just cam and exhaust
Did you say it was the trans pump?
Trans pump was wore, but due to the sound worsening in gear, the *main* problem (specifically regarding the audible noise) was most likely a converter issue.
@@NickKotis_ I found out my noise was the torque converter. Today I got the shudder
So how you fix it
@@rotsbelramos7685 above
Is it just me or is that converter really far forward. Do you have a spacer between the the crank and flexplate?
On my 97+ 4l80e with 5.3 it's much further back
No spacer, I’m running a custom converter from Jake’s Performance. They had my measurement of .880” from back of engine to converter pad and built it accordingly. With converter all the way in trans (over and inch inside bellhousing), I came up with about .120” converter clearance. New flexplate im running came up with .180” and some washers got me back to that ~.120” range. This is a 9.5” converter, maybe it’s small size makes it look further forward than most stock 11” verters
I was thinking the same thing
may be internal ...possibly a bad stator
I have that problem =( on my jeep liberty 2005 4x4
did you ever figure out the issue?
Sent the converter back for a refresh, and I rebuilt the tranny and found the pump was shot. Most likely a combo of the 2, but car is back up and running again.
@@NickKotis_ my truck is doing this it has a 1994 4l60e in it and it only does it after you drive about 20 miles but when you first it up and drive like 10 miles it doesn't do it, only after you drive for about 20 miles. Any ideas on what it could be?
@@kkhelton4462ever get it figured out? My G8 with a 6l80 is making a whirrling/intermittent vibration sound in park, neutral and drive when the exhaust is quiet. Can't hear it when cold

Any possible way I can get your phone number or ig or something trying to get in touch with you on your build.
Blue Ray metallic?
How much your RPM set on idle
In this video, stock exhaust with LTH, and a muffler delete.
What kind of exhaust does it have?
I’ve changed it 3 times since this video... but it was catless LTH into stock exhaust with a muffler delete during this video, so just resonators.
What heads
Tuned to what fuel ?
Threw the stock heads back on, tuned with 93
What other mods does it have?
CAI, catless LTH, full 3 in exhaust(not in this video), spec stage 3 clutch and some other small things like melting oil pump, valve train upgrades etc...
