What did you all think about the Star Trek Strange New Worlds "Under the Cloak of War?" Wow. Amazing. Poor Spock and Poor La’an too. This silly episode had some big, emotionally destructive bombshells. One subtle thing I’m not sure everyone picked up on that I love was the classic like pure classic TOS theme playing after they “fixed” reality and everyone congratulating each other. Really felt right. Star Trek isn't always about being happy when it's great but being happy and hopeful when facing adversity. We saw La'an finding that hope with Una afterwards and Spock finding it to a degree with Uhura at the end. La'an is going to start taking more risks for the right reasons and could possibly die or do something amazing and become a hero! Spock is going to fully embrace his diplomatic skills and become the Spock we all know and love in TOS.

First, a lot of the cast have backgrounds in musical theater (La'An, Ortegas, Chin-Riley are a few), and Celia (Uhura) has won a Grammy. Second, they hired a vocal coach to work with everyone on their singing.

I was soo waiting for your reaction, being a musician i thought you'd like this one. They all sang their own songs, I'm a musician and I loved it. The music was really good also, each song fit the narrative and yes this was a first for star trek, I believe it was done really well. I'm really surprised at your reaction, but If it's not your thing it's not i guess.

Nurse Chapel's song reminded me of James Bond, too!
But this song set up why Spock treats her so cold in TOS. And if you listen to Spock's song "I'm The X", it's really "I'm Ready" in a different key (or transposed).

The timeline for David Marcus works out - he's about 25 in Wrath of Khan/Search for Spock, and this is about 26 years before that. Kirk says here that their relationship is under strain because he's never around, and in Wrath of Khan we learn that led Carol to ask him not to be in David's life after he was born.
What I'm saying is... give it a year or so and La'an/Kirk could still be a thing 😜

I get why you were so frustrated with La'an not just saying something, or making a move with Kirk.... But, speaking as someone who has dealt with severe childhood trauma of my own, people really don't understand how you can SEEM normally socialized, but still really struggle with certain things due to said trauma, especially opening yourself to being that vulnerable, something that comes by-default with romantic intimacy. I am in external-facing marketing and PR in my professional life: I've literally been on television, with no qualms whatsoever. I will go right up to runway models and actresses and start conversations with no hesitance. But if I wanted to ask said model or actress out on a date? ....That is going to be difficult. Maybe impossible. It always has been, with anyone. I pretty much need the other person to pull me, kicking-and-screaming, out of the cave of fear and anxiety. So, I'm really appreciating the representation La'an is giving people like me.
Fiction often depicts trauma like that ham-fistedly. The character is either just portrayed as completely broken and non-functional, or they're James Bond, compensating for the trauma by being the most-successful at everything, including romance. That's not how trauma really works. It's nuanced. And having a character who is clearly competent, even hyper-competent, at her job, has genuine friendships in her life, and is supremely confident in most ways, but is still heavily implied to be romantically inexperienced (possibly COMPLETELY inexperienced, if you take my meaning), is kind of wonderful. Actors usually have egos too big for that. Even the usually down-to-Earth Chris Evans whined about Captain America being an implied virgin, resulting in the stereotypically macho "harrumph, no, of course, a virile HERO MAN like Steve Rogers has been with the ladies, all of them!" course-correction at the hands of Kevin Feige in "She-Hulk." So, tip-of-the-hat to Christina Chong for embracing that aspect of her character, and even folding in her own childhood traumatic experiences with racism into the portrayal (she was tormented for being mixed race). Honestly, this whole series is a celebration of being successful and heroic in kind, caring, non-traditional, non-ego-driven ways, up-to-and-including Pike's decidedly NON-toxic masculine leadership style. So, La'an being this way, and struggling with it (but not surrendering to it), fits the theming well.
TL;DR: while you might have wanted to jump through the screen and shake her for not doing something about her feelings, remember that something that seems "easy" to one person is not going to be "easy" to every person.
Re: David, it does makes sense for Carol to be pregnant with him here. This is late-2259. So, presumably, he's born in early-2260. "The Search for Spock," where David dies, takes place in late-2285. So, he'd be roughly 25, which follows from the way he's depicted there.
....Replacing the "Korean" in "K-pop" with "Klingon" is my new favorite thing in the universe.

Not the same fellowship. That was with the Vulcans, this one is with Doctor Corby. The guy she is engaged to in TOS. Personally i like musicals, so i loved this episode. It's up there for me alongside Buffy and Psych's musical episodes. Also you keep saying it's not your thing. But i could see you enjoying it, at the very least more than you initially expected. (additionally, you are right about David, the timeline makes sense. Also glad you aren't one of the people getting mad that Kirk knows about David. a lot of people remember "that" conversation in Wrath of Khan differently. But the clip is online anyway, so i think that's silly. It's obvious in that film that he always knew)

Really sorry you weren’t a fan of musicals. I know not everyone is, which is totally alright. Christina Chong, who plays La’an had been lobbying for this for years. She’s a singer in real life and has just released some of her first songs. A lot of the cast have a musical theatre background. Celia Rose Gooding, who plays Uhura, even has at least one Grammy. I know you’re not likely to want it but they even released an album from this episode, which has quickly become one of the best-selling soundtracks at the moment.😂👏

I loved this episode... At the same time, I was also enraged at myself by the absolute level of talent that this cast displayed. I wish all the folks that don't enjoy musicals could at least enjoy the performances. The music honestly is solid. You just have to find a musical with a story that connects with you along with the music. It's unfortunate that you couldn't make a single positive comment about the EP solo artist and the Grammy winner's performances you just watched.

I don't think it's so much that you talked during the singing, you kinda have to in a reaction video. But it's kinda unfortunate that you didn't take in the substance of what was being said in the songs, as there was some significant character development there. They weren't just throwaway lyrics. They integrated the story into the music. That hurt your enjoyment of the episode more than it might have otherwise. Still, funny reaction.

  • @shallowgal462

I was wondering when you were going to notice the opening credits were being sung Pentatonix style!
Most of the cast (notably not Dr. M'Benga) have done and even love musical theater, one (La'an) tours when not filming, and another (Uhura) has won a Grammy, so you are hearing the actual cast really sing. And to see the actor who played Hemmer singing K-Pop as a Klingon?
Your frustration and annoyance this episode was highly amusing and entertaining!
You do realize you could read the lyrics in the captions to keep up with the plot, right?
There was a tribute in the lyrics to the pioneer, the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

  • @richardcutts196
    @richardcutts196 6 місяців тому +1

I'm going to make a prediction based on some things I've read, this episode, and TOS. First Christine is going to get engaged to Roger Corby as a result of her fellowship (revealed in TOS episode What are Little Girls Made of?). Spock and his Fiancee (who will find out about the Spock/Chapel thing) will end up continuing their 'break' until the TOS episode Amok Time. So basically no more fun for Spock. I believe Spock's reaction to being dumped by Christine and ignored by his fiancee causes him to act more Vulcan and explains his personality difference in 1x10 and TOS. As I understand it (and they've shown on Enterprise and this show) Vulcans can have sex when they want to. The 7 year cycle in women is their ovulation cycle and in men it's that they must have sex at least once every 7 years or they go into Pon Far. To support my theory you will notice that Amok time takes place roughly 7 years in the future. With Christine engaged and Spock's fiancée mad at him he's not likely to get any in the next 7 years.
As it was revealed in this episode Kirk is about to become a daddy (to David) with Carol Marcus (ST2 The Wrath of Khan). I believe that Kirk's reaction to being kicked out of their lives is why Kirk has trouble 'keeping it in his pants' in TOS. If Kirk was just interested in getting some he had a perfect chance with La'An. Since there has been a cultural shift in the last 60 years and not being able to keep it in his pants would be frowned on now, I suspect/hope they are setting up Kirk and La'An to be a couple as an acceptable alternative.

  • @christinacody8653
    @christinacody8653 Рік тому +4

You are DEFINITELY not well versed in musicals if you felt the duet with Una and Kirk was disneyish. It's meant to emulate tha style if Sullivan and Gilbert, of Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore fame (both meant to be comedic.)
You definitely have La'an's song correct, is an "I Want" song, but feels very much more like a song from Wicked or Rent.
    You: She gonna confess
Me: You got that one wrong! The wrong one, that is!😅
The La'an/Una ballad was my least favorite section of this episode/musical.
You:why can't there be any with cut time or at least 3/4 time?
Me: I.... Cant recall too many memorable musical songs in 3/4 time that aren't waltzes (which wouldn't have been in amy ofthese scenes because waltzes are usually used in scenes of romance). I'm willing to be corrected on this one, but I can't remember any.

La'An is telling Kirk now because she doesn't want to end up singing it to him and anyone else in the vicinity. This way she has control over the message. You will also remember you joked in 2x06 about Kirk 'keeping it in his pants'. If Kirk just wanted a one time thing he could have had that with La'An. Instead he had the integrity to tell her the truth. In my opinion Kirk's Capt. Zoom Pants act was a reaction to being told, by Carol, to get lost and stay away from his kid. I think this leaves the way open for something to develop, in the future, between Kirk and La'An since jumping from bed to bed is less acceptable than it was 60 years ago.

Yeah,Kirk was there for the birth of his son David, but after that, she told him to stay away because she wanted to be a scientist and not a space explorer so he did he didn’t see him again till wrath Khawn when he was like 32 and then he died the next year on Genesis, planet, 33. By the way, he did ask her to marry him, but she said no because she’ll be stuck in the starship as the captain’s wife.

I usually do not like musical episodes in any type of show. most of the time its just so....cringe. But i have to be honest. I really enjoyed this episode, especially Spock's voice.

I enjoyed this episode but by the midway point I was clicking skip-10-secs through most of the songs once I had the gist of the message they were giving. Some of them went on waaaay too long. As far as the actual story and character development within it, good stuff imo.

I was really dreading this episode from the previews because I hate musicals too, but it wasn't so bad in the end for me. It wasn't good, but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I guess actors love musicals and they pushed to have an episode where they could do what they wanted. It was a decent way to wrap up all the loose ends with everyone before the season ended though.

Although i also hate musicals, some of the songs are quite good, I occasionally listen to them on repeat

Sadly, I could not make it all the way through your commentary, you didn't listen to it. I know musicals are not your thing, but you just ran it though complaining the whole way and missed the most crucial parts. Sorry man, no thumbs up on this reaction. I give it to you for being truthful about it, but an honest reviewer would have at least tried to catch the musical meanings in the songs.
