- Is this the real life? Is this just improbability? The musical episode of STRANGE NEW WORLDS was improbable, unstoppable, sensational, ovational and BOLDY EXPLORATIONAL! Here's my REACTION to SUBSPACE RHAPSODY.

To be fair you can't understand K-Pop until you experience it in the original Klingon
I'm stealing this lol
I’m Commander Shepard and this is my favorite comment on the Citadel. Wait…..wrong franchise….
Are you telling me that K-Pop stands for Klingon-Pop!?!
BTS Batleths To Swing
That is AWESOME!
I'm a 45-year-old man who grew up with TOS--and I loved this episode. LOVED it. One of Star Trek's great strengths is that it can be a legal drama one week, a comedy the week after that, then a taut political thriller. So why not a musical? Heck, the second Star Trek episode ever aired had an Uhura-Spock musical number in it! The fact that they've never done a musical episode before is a great reason do finally do one, and this was the perfect cast for it. I love this show so much. I wish we got longer seasons!
Yes, yes and YES! I read an interview the other day with someone behind SNW, I don't think it was one of the showrunners, but he said he wants to do 20 episode seasons.
People forget that 20+ episode seasons rule! Not every episode has to be groundbreaking, plot-driven masterpieces. "Filler" episodes allow for so much character growth and fun.
@@donald4312 The days of 20 episode seasons are over with more shorter shows being considered basically because they have shorter budgets longer run show will cost more in the end which is why now a days the max you see a show run is for 3-5 seasons of 10 episde each also to avoid syndication
As someone born within days of the original show, who grew up with it as a beloved staple, I absolutely agree. I love this show SO much.
My dad and I watch this show together and we both loved this ep too. I really wish we could get longer seasons, because I love this cast!
45:30 I think Uhura’s solo song was about her realizing she’s never ever alone. She’s the one who keeps everyone connected. Meaning she’s connected to everyone. Which is why she was the only person able to inspire the whole crew.
I love that Spock's diplomatic skills, renowned throughout the galaxy, began as Pike repeatedly telling him "Go get drunk with the Klingons and see if you can sort this out" lmao
"Surprisingly beautiful baritone" is now one of my favourite lines...
"A million shards of light... " I hear that and I tear up instantly...I feel the pain she is communicating as Nyota Uhura... beautiful.
Yeah it's a very powerful song.
Same. I listened to the album of this on UA-cam for like 2 weeks straight after I heard it and this line plus the next one would choke me up.
26:45 It’s the Boimlerfly effect. He blurted out Spock’s predestined lack of humanity and crushed her heart. As far as she’s concerned, they’ve been done for days and days. All she’s doing is sending him on his Vulcan way.
Yeah, she knows that the relationship can't last long even if she wants it to, and she's been offered an amazing opportunity that involves her leaving. Of course she'd take it. It would have been better if she'd had the chance to tell him in private, but she didn't get the chance.
@@wendyheatherwoodto be fair. She did try to make Spock wait but he insisted. And the musical took over
Lol Boimlerfly. Chapel did tell Spock in the previous episode that she needed sometime to herself. I think she felt that this was the start of their breakup but poor Spock had no clue.
What was funny about Spock is how much he's reacting like a drama queen, when he twice 'runs' away from Chapel instead of talking to her...😂
"I doubt we will be bunnies" is one of the low key funniest lines in the episode. It's just that Spock is talking about bunnies. And the fact he doesn't.. completely rule out the possibility, he just doubts it.
It's also a reference to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode.
Ah that went right over my head.
I loved Dr. Mbenga's "I would prefer not to be a bunny".
That was a direct reference to Buffy's Once More With Feeling episode and Anya's Bunny fear verse. This episode followed in that style with moving character development along through a musical.
I suspect that Christine's abruptness may have to do with what Boimler had said in the turbolift.
33:23 Hemmer is not dead. I refuse to accept this. Aenar live comfortably in the subzero temperatures lethal to Gorn. Hemmer fell outta that ship, landed in a big old pile of snow. Passed out as he was being buried in it. The baby Gorn froze to death. Hemmer puked them out it something. The poor guy’s been marooned on that planet for some time now. We ain’t seen no body! No body, no death!
That would be quite the twist. I hope at the very least they keep having Bruce Horak cameos. I want him to be in the show as much as possible.
It was Bruce behind the head Klingon@@chattery
14:27 lady has pipes for days. She can sing a power balled like the pro she is.
Been waiting for this one. Totally worth it. Great idea and execution. Star Trek continues to go boldly where it has never gone before.
Perfectly said.
4:21 that was the Vulcan fellowship, not Korby’s.
Michael told Spock some mean things one time, things he knew weren't true and that she was only saying them to protect him. He didn't speak with her for over almost two decades.
Sarek disagreed with Spock about joining Starfleet academy, they didn't speak for almost two decades.
Chapel informs Spock (through song) she is breaking up with him in front of half the crew and that she doesn't feel bad at all about how she chose to do it. Spock walks out silently. In TOS, Spock is cold towards her at best, hostile towards her at worst, and we never knew why. Guess we do now.
When someone hurts Spock, he shuts them out completely. It takes a big gesture from that person to get him to open back up to them even a little bit. And I would like to point out, the first two were family.
Yeah Spock being cold is definitely not without reason considering what he's been through. Bet that Kolinahr can't come soon enough.
And after reconciling with Sarek they AGAIN get into an argument about the Carassian Border war...
That is an awesome observation!
The songs are still going through my mind. It's like an infinite earworm.
The songs are all on Spotify already. I have had the Klingon pop song short on UA-cam just looping for hours. They are the “modern” day k-pop singers!
I've had the album downloaded since I finished the episode. Straight up addicted.
They're on Amazon music too. Streaming them as I type this.
I need an intermix brain implantation..because I read it as Klingon K POOP😂
APOLOGIES..I am an X
I'm pretty sure the Klingons considered losing half the empire worth it at that point, when half the empire was erupting into boy band ensembles, rap battles, and power ballads, most of which probably let out a lot of pretty shitty secrets.
🎵 I know Klingons should be fearless, but I'm TERRI-FIIIIIIEEED RIGHT NOOOOW!!! 🎶
"Um, General, are you..."
🎵 Destroy this dishonorable fold no matter WHAAAAAT THE COOOOST! 🎶
K-pop, not boyband
Just realized that it would be K-pop regardless, because it's Klingon Pop not Korean Pop 😂
Fair enough.
39:14 if Klingons began spontaneously bursting out into epic Klingon opera instead of “modern day” K-Pop? They would not feel so aggressively dishonored. Makes perfect sense.
39:22 yeah, you get it.
I heard the director said they considered doing Klingon Opera for that scene but the K-Pop thing worked better for shock value.
@@chatteryTo be fair, "Klingon Opera" cannot be reach the same play on words perfection that is "Kpop" (Klingon pop instead of Korean pop).
Celia Rose Gooding was Tony-nominated for Jagged Little Pill and also won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
Wow I didn't know they won a Grammy but it's not surprising considering the talent there.
This was an AMAZING episode I gave it an A+ great reaction to Subspace Rhapsody.
Thanks! I loved it too.
10:59 love the tactile clicky-clacky of Kirk’s connections in the tube there. Very much helps foster the feeling TNG and even later TOS era movies are more advanced. Not an isoliniar chip or biomemetic gelpack in sight. Just transistors, circuits, and “old fashioned” engineering.
Yeah I agree, the tactility makes it feel much more grounded. Though less futuristic I guess.
I could not help but wonder if that slight whimsical dance at the end between Capt. Pike and Pelina was really more improvised interactions between Anson Mount and Carol Kane than the characters they were playing because actors they bonded well, and they were celebrating a challenging but fun episode!
The fellowship Chapel got in this episode is different from the Vulcan archeological medical fellowship from previous episode.
I've been waiting for your reaction to this one and it did not disappoint!
😀
46st as a Boomer Trekkie who Grew up watching TOS as new episodes...and Love Most things TREK ...I loved this Episode..... the concept, the fact that they realized they're singing...Original for sure...I give it a 10 ...also a Player of STO since BETA
Dang, I'm jealous you got to see TOS when it was new. I used to play a ton of STO when it first came out. Haven't played it in ages.
What gets me is that this totally feels like what would have happened in the original series in its fifth season if it had been a hit and given a budget. Sixties Gene and Lucille Ball producing? That TOTALLY woulda happened.
"I almost understood that." My second favorite bit in the episode, after Klingons singing K-Pop.
I just got the vinyl in the mail, It has found a home with all my other musical LPs. Never thought I would have something like that in my collection
I loved how your eyes popped when The Klingons came up on the viewscreen. I was gobsmacked and almost fell out of my chair laughing.
I couldn't believe my eyes.
36:10 Majel Barrett is the voice of the franchise, in my eyes.
I have to listen ti it every day, . I fell in love immediately.
Heard today that Subspace Rhapsody is getting a vinyl release. I'll definitely have to snag that.
The Julia Child snl cut absolutely killed me 🤣.
I was also disappointed we never heard Admiral April discuss things with Number 1 in a beautiful barritone lol.
I knew someone would appreciate it! Haha.
Fun fact: Julia Child herself thought that skit was hilarious 😊
As a trained singer, Rebecca Romaijn has had training. I love it as much as you.
I think this is a different fellowship she's joining
I love how you do your reviews. You truly understand the universe, and you have a well balanced, open mind. I loved this episode, but too many people hated it.
I would suggest that Carol Marcus did nto just come out of no where. In 'Where No Man has Gone Before' Gary confesses that he aimed that 'little blonde lab tech' at Cadet Kirk and Kirk reacts by saying 'I almost married her!' Personalyl I accept that Mitchell is the reason Kikr and Marcus became a thing.
Nice catch. I don't remember that line but it works for me as a nod to Carol.
This was a different Fellowship than the Vulcan one that Chapel was accepted into.
Klingon opera is surprisingly easy to follow. I watcg ds9 every day too.michael Dorn sings it quite well.
I can just tell there will be a lot of behind the scenes stories Mount and Kane will share on an upcoming Blu Ray version of this series! And of course, the rest of the cast and crew. But in particular Carol Kane's presence was undoubtedly a treat for many of them... especially those in their 30s & 40s who remember her most of their lives! From her days as portraying Lefka's wife, to her role on A Princess Bride... on up through the present!
I definitely have to get the blu ray. I haven't gotten S1 on disc yet, only Picard S3 so far.
i there tho? On the DVD there is not much from season 2... season 1 yes (Pike's peak. I was sold from the first shot. Such a mood XD)
18:24 Just immediately tackle everyone who starts singing.
44:22 This episode is _completely_ like *Once More, With Feeling* (that's the famous Buffy musical episode). You have people forced into following the rules of musical _while_ they're singing, but very confused and concerned while not. Plus, there's the thing with bunnies (M'Benga and Anya would agree - being bunnies wouldn't be great) and alternate dimensions.
The only thing missing is a snippet of some random background character's song. They had the opportunity to have someone sing about how the Enterprise's laundry system managed to get the mustard out of their red shirt, and they didn't take it. Pity.
Good point.
I keep seeing new Buffy referenes everytime I watch, I need to write them down to remember all of them
@@cherylpeterson6634 for all his faults, Whedon is a hell of a storyteller. Sad we have to separate the art from the artist in a lot of ways here.
Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks are my favorites of modern Trek and they never disappoint. They boldly go where no one has gone before 🖖
30:49 I wanna hear Ethan Peck sing The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. Like, a modern version.
Like that classic Audi ad with Nimoy and Quinto
@@chattery exactly.
I do hope SNW gives us some explanation of how Kirk made it from youngest XO in the fleet to CO of the flagship in 6 years.
I am right there with you!
😀
6:15 I love everyone’s WTF faces. It’s so fun.
Dont know if it was pointed out, but Hemmers actor played the lead klingon
Yeah. Very happy to see him. I hope he keeps making appearances in future episodes.
The main Klingon leader was actually played by Bruce Horak -the actor that played Hemmer - and he's doing his own singing (he has an album that came out 2020). So glad they were able to bring him back on the show in another capacity!
This "Kirk never mentions La'an in the original series so this relationship is not going forward" argument that is going around the fandom drives me crazy. It's not like it couldn't have happened and just ended before the beginning of the original series for all we know. Because do you know who we never heard him talk about during the original series? *Carol Marcus and David, aka his freaking son!*
I rest my case.
I think the main problem is the Khan thing. Kirk doesn't know the Noonien-Singh name in TOS. It doesn't bother me though. It would be really great if La'an is what drives Kirk and Carol apart.
@@chattery He does know the name in the original series, he just doesn't connect the Khan that he is seeing in front of him to that Khan. And when he asks for his full name multiple times Khan keeps creating excuses not to say it. When they do make the connection Kirk immediately goes "Oh, no. Not that Khan!"
It would be as if today you met a guy that says he is from 1940s Germany and he is named Adolf. Adolf was a common name in 1940s Germany (and in Europe in general), so if you don't really remember how Hitler looked like from your history classes when you were 12 you wouldn't make the connection immediately.
I've watched the episode very recently and I paid attention to that exactly because I was wondering how they would deal with this in SNW and that is what I noted.
20:30 she’s reportedly had musical theater training and experience.
My name is Geery. I play drums in an Irish Punk band. I'm also a massive trekkie I . Loved this shit. So funny. Well done brother. I really enjoyed that. The same thoughts. Thanks .an. The Klingons...
Hey Geery. Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed.
I'm not a musical person, but these songs are epic af! :D
I don't have a very good grasp of musical theory, I'm just a singer...but I kept wondering why I (on a personal level) love EVERY song and then I realized that all through the compositions, there are high intervals between notes. Or maybe I have seen enough musicals to know that that's how all musicals are ?
I'm right there with you. I've studied music but you don't need to to know when it's good.
Regarding your title here, Me too! Every song rotating thru my head nonstop like its just playing the album in my head,
I believe there's hope, post Carol, for Kirk and La'An. If all Kirk wanted was a short term thing then he would not have mentioned Carol. My theory is that the reason Kirk spends so much time hooking up in TOS is a reaction to being told, by Carol, to take a hike. If they continue having Kirk in SNW, a relationship with La'An would be an acceptable, what with the social changes in the last 60 years, alternative to Kirk being Capt. Zoom Pants.
I feel like we needed a post credit scene where Kirk gets a message from Carol in which she sang the TOS theme song with the dumb lyrics that Roddenberry himself wrote in order to keep half the sone royalties for himself.

I argue that its not a musical. In a musical, the singing and dancing are a metaphor for how they're feeling. In this case, they're actually singing and dancing, so it's literal.
14:39 that’s a fantastic edit.
26:07 imagine an inverse universe? A musical suddenly not being one? Twilight Zone material! How do people used to spontaneous emotional songs learn to express themselves without that crutch?
This video is fantastic, thanks! Btw, this episode is my favourite too.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed. :)
I just noticed that when Spock sings his song, the lights on the console behind him are blinking in time to the rhythm.
Nice catch! I bet there's a lot of little details like that in this episode.
As small mention, the Klingon general here during the lead singing, will eventually become Klingon Chancellor during the destruction of the Praxis, the mining moon. "The Undiscovered Country".
It's supposed to be Gorkon?
I believe so!! Here, he's a general!! But he has the eye piece as well.@@chattery
@@edwardjackson9639 Gorkon didn't have an eyepatch in Undiscovered Country. That was General Chang (Christopher Plummer's character)
@@TheRealThunder thanks for clearing that up!!! I need to go back to the musical episode to get the general's name??
Car crash edit!😂🙌🏼Loved this episode, and went in apprehensive. Can’t wait for your season finale reaction!😄=A=💫🌿🌌
Gotta squeeze in a James Bond reference whenever I can. Haha. Season Finale reaction will be out in a few days. :)
I'm sure Spock volunteered to smooth things over with the Klingons; and drank on his own accord without being asked since he was drowning his sorrows about Chapel.
True. Bloodwine probably never tasted so good.
Now, we just need a Klingon -perspective episode where they are putting on a Gilbert and Sullivan performance for the annual Federation embassy Christmas party, and we have truly gone everywhere.
But seriously, we have heard of Klingon Opera for decades, and I'm in for that as an hour of escapism 😊
Oh my...THE DISHONOR! But yes I'd be down for that. Haha.
lOl, This video pops up for me just moments after I sang "Hail the Klingons, Uhura,!" as I sat down at my desk.
Make your blood scream!
Chapel cut Spock off cold because Future Boy made her think she might break him and screw up the future. (Thanks, Boimler!)
If I remember correctly Rebecca romign was trained in musical theatre
Just wait till T'Pring finds out about Spock/Chapel, and you know she will! I suspect the 'break' will last until TOS 'Amok Time' episode.
8:26 right? I can’t understand the haters.
'it's THE MUSIC MEISTERR!!!!"
🎵🎵🎵
I think I just had an epiphamy as to why Spock & Bones didn't get along so well! The doctor's human emotional reactions to things reminded Spok of the emotional doctor who abandoned him for her career because her emotions of acceptance overshadowed the emotional romantic loyalty that Spok thought she aught to have shown him instead. Since BONES is in the same field as the woman who hurt him and whenever he shows heightened emotional responses or makes speculations and recommendations based on emotional means "hunches" for example, it is a knife twisting reminder of Nurse Chappell and all the hurt she caused Spok.
It would’ve been anticlimactic if Q had appeared at the end of the episode insinuating that it was responsible for the anomaly
I thought the musical was so strange that I was low key expecting it to happen lol
Edit: I loved the episode though
Could've been Trelane. Haha.
This was the third episode of Star Trek I ever saw because a friend forced me to (The others were Pilot and the Lower Decks crossover.) And I hate musical episodes. Aaaaaanways I fell in love with SNW and I was laughing my ass off when Pike tried to get out if the conversation and ended up doubling down XD
The songs run in my head for what ... 3 weeks now?
One of the best things about Strange New Worlds is its genre hopping. Brings together people with different interests.
I was disappointed that the Klingons didn't do Klingon Opera.
Yeah. The director said they did the boy band thing for shock value.
Klingon Opera would be the obvious choice of music for Klingons, but it would hardly be "dishonorable" to sing opera as a Klingon. The "K-Pop" style music on the other hand, makes absolute sense for their... dishonor.
I listen to Status Report all the time.
I've had the whole album on loop since the credits started rolling.
Finally found a actual star trek reactor nice
Do you have a full unmuted version of the episodes on your patreon?
I don't have a patreon, I'm afraid. I may start one eventually, but I just assumed I wouldn't have much support on it.
@@chattery thats a shame.
Didn't Spock and T'Pring break off their engagement in 2x05?
I think they just decided to give their relationship some air. As far as I know, they're still engaged.
26:46 I'm curious if you've watched the whole series, or just this episode. Previous episodes had their relationship strained.
I watched both seasons.
🎵🎶All Systems Stable 🎵🎶
But why are we singing?
Nurse Chapel told the Vulcan fellowship to F off.... which is different from Dr, Roger Korby's fellowship
They mentioned Korby earlier in the season so I think that's why I got confused. So is Korby's fellowship also on Vulcan?
@@chattery Dr. Korby is human (I think) and does research separate from the Vulcan science academy (I think). We see him in the TOS episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of?"
@@chattery Korby's work is influential enough that the Vulcan fellowship included quoting part of it word for word as an entrance requirement, which is why his name came up in that episode.
Spock isn't engaged. They broke it off
I thought they were still engaged but decided to put it off for awhile?
I also loved this episode, so you’re not alone.
Yeah Rip. These spec ops still around?
Chappel knows she can't continue her relationship with Spock per e7 when Boimler informed her that Spock needs to be fully Vulcan to fulfill his needed destiny. So, don't bash on Christine.
That doesn't mean she has to handle it so poorly.
@@chatteryShe didn't. This anomaly makes people express their deepest feelings without their will. Christine would never, in mormal circumstances, broken up with Spock publicly. But she has a life, both she and Spick know it can not last. Every guy assumes it is only Spick suffering with that knowledge. Chappel is too, VERY deeply. She CAN NOT have Spock. He CANNOT have her. She was not reponsible for informing him in the way the anomaly made her.
Best out of the box episode, so unexpectedly good. Best way to go deep into the characters personal feelings.
The way the emotional element was kind of meta with musicals was great.
So Christine is a narcissist. thats how she can blow him off so easy she just wanted a taste of them spicy Vulkan emotions but as soon as she didnt need him any more she moved on.
Is there a good reason to do this,, no
I guess not but I'm glad they did.
StarTrek and singing really needs to stop is cringy at best I thought they learned from Picard
I don't agree but you're welcome to your opinion.
