@LordLOC True but it's hard to believe that the big three of Star Trek for decades would die a permanent death...moreover Kirk's dad isn't a major character in the OG universe so his death doesn't mean much as far as danger for the core characters.
@@shootingreal5945 True, but my point was they could have done anything they wanted. @LordLOC Well I would love to see them do something with Kirk's dad and see Chris Hemsworth return but man, it's getting to the point where we just got to hope we even get a 4th movie.
A lot of the diverging timeline truly stems from the loss of George Kirk... at least based on the novel Final Frontier.... even the very design and time frame of the original Enterprise construction was altered as a result of his premature death. Loved how they used that as a means to alter the look of the ships as well as the character changes
I love this trilogy of films, it’s such a clever way to “reboot” a franchise and give it new life and new stories without also throwing away everything that came before. This alternate timeline story idea is such a fun way of doing a “what if?”
7:24 Mark! Originally "Johnny" was meant to be James's brother "George"! But during the editing process he lost an older brother, but gained a friend instead. 😮
@robbob5302 ! No. George was the runaway, and James took the prized antique "Cheverlot Corvette" from their paternal uncle and stepfather "Frank" if I recall right, to either bring him back or join him. But then it got changed to an act of defiance joy ride, and the walker was his best friend instead. "Narced"? Thanks to the "Nokia" device, the car was trackable, and Frank would know where his car was and who took it and why. 😁 I'm not sure about the name "Frank "! I only recently learned that the actor who played the "LAPD" officer in "Heroes" and played a "Star Wars" character and a commander in "Star Trek Beyond" had also been the uncle-stepfather, but was reduced to a voice-only role. 🤔
You were saying that you thought Uhura and Kirk were going to get together; interestingly in the original series, Kirk and Uhura had the first interracial kiss on tv. I think one of may favorite parts of these movies is the casting...they NAILED it!
Really my dude? I didn't have a kid when this movie came out but I had tears when George Kirk sacrificed himself to save everyone and his family. But I was always a big family person.
I feel like a lot of people miss the reference at the end of the movie when old Spock just mutters to himself "thrusters on full". Although I did notice Jane got a puzzled look on her face when he said it. If you want to get the reference you need to go back and watch Star Trek 2 The wrath of Khan.
Sulu having fencing training is a call back to the original series when the crew all goes crazy from some space virus and sulu goes crazy running around the ship chasing people with a fencing sword.
I'm a lifelong ST fan, and I loved this film. My only gripe (and it's only a minor gripe) is how the Kelvin could possibly carry enough shuttles to evacuate 800 people at once. As I remember, the original Constitution Class Enterprise only carried a small handful of shuttlecraft (25 at most), so unless the Kelvin's shuttlecraft were like a Tardis, only a fraction of the crew could use them to escape. Maybe the cargo shuttles could carry more?
For Enterprise also has 10 cargo shuttles, 10 standard personnel shuttles (Type 7 shuttlecraft), 5 special purpose craft (Type-6 shuttlecraft) for 2 persons, 4 Class F shuttlecraft for 7 personels, and 12 two-persons shuttlepods (Type 15 Shuttlepod) for extravehicular and short-range use. That is possible. 🤔🤔
You said you'd never seen a phaser run out of charge. In the TOS episode "The Omega Glory" (the one where the Enterprise encounters the Yangs and the Kohms, as well as Capt. Ron Tracey of the U.S.S. Exeter), towards the end of the episode, Tracey has the drop on Kirk. When he presses his phaser's trigger... nothing happens. His phaser if completely drained of power. Just a fun tidbit for you. :)
I really feel like they did a great job calling back to what came before it while updating it and making it a franchise those who have never seen any of Star Trek can enjoy. And the new stuff, especially Strange New Worlds, I have REALLY enjoyed. Especially the episode with the time travel to Toronto (don't want to give too many spoiler details about the episode).
Before Into Darkness, you should show Jane "Space Seed" from the original series. Partly to introduce to how these characters were played originally, and partly due to the nature of the film.
I would try Wrath of Khan as a follow up movie or maybe Galaxy Quest, Voyage Home, Generations, Lower Decks, Futurama, Star Ship Troopers, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy try a few different vibes and styles in the genre.
35:07 Mark! Now that is a pod! But look at how it seemed to use what should be a pod docking bay as a launch bay or tube. Hmm. 🤔 A difference from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"! 🖖
In fact, the guy in red that space jumps with Kirk and Sulu played a Cardassian in DS9. The older Vulcan dude at the beginning that says Spock's mother is his disadvantage has played a few characters in Star Trek history. :D
It should be noted that if the USS Kelvin hadn't been destroyed, Jim would have attended Star Fleet Academy of his is own free will and his dad would have been at his graduation and Spock would have attended the Vulcan Science Academy.
Fyi - In the original series the kiss between Kirk and Ohura was the first interracial kiss on American television, in fact many southern tv stations refused to air it.
I watched the original series every week that it aired, and then rewatched them when they reran after they cancelled the series after 3 seasons. My dad took me to a lecture that Leonard Nimoy gave in my hometown of Orlando, FL. My dad watched the show too. I watched every iteration of sequel series that followed. I love Star Wars, believe me I do, but I really love Star Trek.
I absolutely loved this reaction guys. It's been awhile since I watched this movie and I need a rewatch after this. They honor Anton in the third movie in a quiet scene and I cried in the theatre when I saw it. I think Jane will enjoy the other two movies. Can't wait.
One detail I saw in an interview of J. J. Abrahams regarding the music I liked very much, is that the music you hear throughout the movie was composed specifically for it. Abrahams said "Star Trek has its own theme, but you can't play it right away, it is iconic so it has to be earned first. That's why it is only played at the end of the movie with Spock's voiceover, once the crew demonstrated they have earned their roles.
The way Spock talked to the Science Academy reminded me of a southern phrase bless your heart. Jane is a good example of why people don't recognize that Clark Kent is Superman just cause he puts on glasses. So does Jane have an early AI facial recognition system?
On the show, Uhura would try to flirt with Spock from time to time, and he would usually not recognize it as flirting because he tried to be unemotional - it was one of the running jokes. So no, they weren’t a thing in the show, but fans of the show can appreciate why they were in the movies
7:58 Wow, I’ve often thought that the guy playing the traffic cop must have been thrilled. He’s a complete unknown and he gets a cool glory shot all to himself (this is probably supposed to imply that Kirk is in a lot of trouble).
When Chris pine Sack in the captains chair at the very end of the movie you could totally see him being William Shatner that was actually brilliant, and he played it so well actually all of the cast played the predecessor characters to the best of their ability and I think they completely pulled it off
I really did love this trilogy. I actually appreciated the new actors after growing up on the original show. DS9 Was my favorite of all the series though
12:23 Love Captain Pike. Bruce Greenwood and now Anson Mount truly make this character someone that you believe would be the one to follow into the unknown.
Always will remember this movie for winning a radio contest and my girl n I saw this a week before release and seeing a local Klingon metal band. Got backstage and the singer saying he lost his arm in battle with the federation and the bassist got kicked out of his last band, some satanic black metal group, for not taking it seriously enough and decided to go Klingon. Smoking weed, crushing cans, and slammin shots with Klingons was my idea of Stovacor on earth yo.
I think it's hard for someone unfamiliar with the Star Trek universe to grasp the little things that make this movie more fun. I hope they get the new sequel out of development hell when the strike is over.
Sorry, amigo,no new films for this franchise ( kelvin time-line )there was going to be a 4th movie for this franchise ( it was actually being filmed )Paramount wanted Hemsworth and the actor playing-KIRK- to take pay cuts. They said: AWWWW &&& naw !!! LOL. So the film ceased production.
These actors portray the original cast so well it’s absolutely ridiculous. If you go back and watch some original episodes more than a couple, you will see how well they actually do at portraying their predecessors.
that it dose my man. i know the feeling. after having kids the thought of being in that situation gets ya emotional but you know ud do it too in a heartbeat. also the reason earth had no defenses is because nero got the codes from capt pike and disabled the defense grids.
Wish you'd seen the original crew on the original Star Trek in the '60's. SO many comparisons you could make between this film and the series that started it all. You'd really appreciate the very cool actors who played the main characters, who really caught the essence of the originals. Great job on this reaction!
What _new_ meaning? It means what it has always meant, one is wishing someone _long life_ and _prosperity._ What am I missing? I understand why *Spock* wouldn't want to say it to himself, because it would seem self-serving (just as he said). But that didn't change the meaning of it. And that particular context wouldn't apply when said to someone else. *EDIT:* Also, _"Live long and prosper"_ has been a known pop culture phrase since the 60's.
@@CaesiusX the new meaning after the council said his human mother was a disadvantage and Spock proceeded to decline joining the Vulcan Science Academy. That “live long and prosper” Spock said to the council, to me and my father, was really a “F$&k you, im out!”
JJ Abrams was smart creating the Kelvin incident to change the timeline. By doing this they don’t have to follow the original movies and basically just remake them. This gives them more freedom. William Shatner at first wanted a big role in this one but JJ couldn’t work it in without there being an issue. Shatner has a big ego to the point he didn’t see it in theaters cause he didn’t want anyone to recognize him and ask him about the new Capt Kirk. In a way he feels he’s the only Kirk. I like the way they worked Nimoy into the movie. It’s sad that the actor playing Chekhov died. He was such a great actor. Such a preventable death too. The part that failed on his car was the same part that was recalled in the same model but a year later.
I still hate the casting of this film. Chris Pine looks nothing like Shatner, but he does look like a young Jeffrey Hunter. He could’ve easily played the young Pike, not disrupt the time line at all. The next film is just a cheap rip off of wrath of Khan. But even if it wasn’t, they really did a terrible job with Kirks character JJ, Abrams, Alex, Kurtzman, and the rest of bad reboot did not understand the original series. That’s why I prefer the third film all of them. Except the enterprise A looks really freaking stupid.
6:58 Mark! Kilometers! Haha! What I've been asking ever since is, is that "Nokia" device meant to be an antique too, with the car? Or is it meant to be a futuristic add-on? A device from 2009 would be an antique too by then. Or is it just Abrams being cheap again? 🤔
In the part where Spock declines acceptance into the Vulcan Science Academy, I love the way he makes "Live long and prosper" sound like "F you."
dudes a legend!🙂

Oh so his brother called dad, and narced him out?
@robbob5302 ! No. George was the runaway, and James took the prized antique "Cheverlot Corvette" from their paternal uncle and stepfather "Frank" if I recall right, to either bring him back or join him. But then it got changed to an act of defiance joy ride, and the walker was his best friend instead.
"Narced"? Thanks to the "Nokia" device, the car was trackable, and Frank would know where his car was and who took it and why. 😁
I'm not sure about the name "Frank "! I only recently learned that the actor who played the "LAPD" officer in "Heroes" and played a "Star Wars" character and a commander in "Star Trek Beyond" had also been the uncle-stepfather, but was reduced to a voice-only role. 🤔
23:19 Mark! Gayla? Gaila? The green Orion girl was sent to the USS Farragut! So now she's a part of the debris field too! 😢
47:39 Mark! Do you mean, more than those that were destroyed? 🤔 They weren't able to replicate more in the meantime! 😁
I love the visual style of these films and maybe when you saw this last time you wasn't a father so seeing it now hit's more.
18:28 Mark! The "Golden Gate Bridge"! ✨️ ⌛️⏳️⌛️⏲️ Give up? That's San Francisco, California! 😊
i'm 25 and have no kids and that start of the movie gets even me to cry a bit it just hurts to think about it
You said you'd never seen a phaser run out of charge. :)
10:58 - When Gamora is in a different Galaxy, she becomes Uhura.
2:40 Mark! A common misconception error! She wasn't sucked out as you put it, Jane! She was blown outwards! 😳
the interior of the Enterprise Engineering section was filmed at a brewery...thus the industrial look.
Not only is Chris Hemsworth, Marvel's Thor, in this, but so is Faran Tahir(Captain Robau), who played the leader of The Ten Rings in "Iron Man."
"Why doesnt Earth have defences?" They had border protrction grids which Nero got through. He got Pike to give him info remember?
It should be noted that if the USS Kelvin hadn't been destroyed, Jim would have attended Star Fleet Academy of his is own free will and his dad would have been at his graduation and Spock would have attended the Vulcan Science Academy.
I thought Zachary Quinto captured Spock perfectly, but watching Ethan Peck’s portrayal in Strange New Worlds is much more interesting.
36:10 Mark! Um, on Delta Vega, JTK is the alien! 😅
8:25 Mark! Yes, she got remarried!
I'm living proof that it is possible to like BOTH Star Trek and Gilmore Girls. They are not mutually exclusive.
Same here! I grew up watching TNG as a child with my dad and Gilmore Girls as a teen with my mom. ❤
This was a very sad movie. I cry every time I see that beautiful Corvette go over the cliff.
Ahh I love this trilogy. Please do all of them!
Karl Urban, Bones, played the nephew of the horse tribe king in LOTR
@@belvagurr403 Billy Butcher too.
The way Spock talked to the Science Academy reminded me of a southern phrase bless your heart.
Jane is a good example of why people don't recognize that Clark Kent is Superman just cause he puts on glasses. So does Jane have an early AI facial recognition system?
"It's like a big factory."😂It's actually a Budwiser plant..🍻
On the show, Uhura would try to flirt with Spock from time to time, and he would usually not recognize it as flirting because he tried to be unemotional - it was one of the running jokes. So no, they weren’t a thing in the show, but fans of the show can appreciate why they were in the movies
7:58 Wow, I’ve often thought that the guy playing the traffic cop must have been thrilled. He’s a complete unknown and he gets a cool glory shot all to himself (this is probably supposed to imply that Kirk is in a lot of trouble).
The beauty of this movie, you don't have to watch the series to know what's up.
I love this movie..
“You never loved her!” Makes me laugh every time, lol.
When Chris pine Sack in the captains chair at the very end of the movie you could totally see him being William Shatner that was actually brilliant, and he played it so well actually all of the cast played the predecessor characters to the best of their ability and I think they completely pulled it off
“Let’s name him after your father.”
“Odin? That’s great!”
I really did love this trilogy. I actually appreciated the new actors after growing up on the original show.
DS9 Was my favorite of all the series though
I love these movies glad you're reacting to them!
When they ejected the core that save them, but that also set up the fact that they have no way home, and enterprise is examining other planets
that it dose my man. i know the feeling. after having kids the thought of being in that situation gets ya emotional but you know ud do it too in a heartbeat. also the reason earth had no defenses is because nero got the codes from capt pike and disabled the defense grids.
Wish you'd seen the original crew on the original Star Trek in the '60's. SO many comparisons you could make between this film and the series that started it all. You'd really appreciate the very cool actors who played the main characters, who really caught the essence of the originals. Great job on this reaction!
2.7K Thumbs Up + Mine! 👍 You're welcome, and thanks! ☺️
Notes: A belated "Bless you!" to Jane! 🤧
The sad irony of Walter outliving his sucessor. 😢
the fact that they made a logical new timeline is the best way to create a new show with the same characters and a new story.
I absolutely love this trilogy! So glad you decided to watch these. Great reaction.
Love this movie. Captures the dynamic of the original show with the humor.
Loved the new meaning of “live long and prosper” my dad and i would say it to people all the time without knowing what we meant
Chris Pine - 3 for 3 - all three Star Trek movies were stellar!!!!!!!
To the both of you and your family....Live long and prosper 🖖❤🎉
