2001 Ford F350 7.3 Powerstroke - CCV Mod - Crank Case Vent Hose

  • One of my favorite mods to keep the engine clean from oil coming out of all of the pipes. International made the 7.3 to vent into the atmosphere, however, Ford had to made the CCV go into the intake due to the smog regulations. Newer turbo and supercharger cars install Oil catch cans in order to avoid the oil from going back into the intake, i was thinking to maybe do an oil catch can later on, but for now it will be dumped at the bottom in order to not have any more oil junk building up on the pipes.

I have a Dt444e which is virtually the same engine as the 7.3 Powerstroke it comes from the factory with the backward facing steel breather tube going down the back of the engine and has no catch can. I have absolutely no issue with it. I would imagine as the engine gets worn out, it will put out some blow by. But not enough to merit any concern. My bus has 270k miles and the down pipe emits nothing visible.
I believe the turbo set up will pull a vacuum on that CCV line if it was attached to the intake pre-intercooler. I think the engine would be better off without a vacuum being pulled on the crankcase.

Nice Mod Nick. Only I would run that hose somewhere else away from the Exhaust Manifold to ensure the rubber remains in good condition and that when it eventually goes bad it's not dumping oil on the manifold. One that will stink like heck in the cab and two it could start a fire, maybe. Thanks for the mod. Might try it on my 01 F350. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

The outlet from the ccv doghouse is 1/2 so adding another 1/2 reducer doesn’t change anything. Also the inlet for the ccv in the intake reduces to less than 1/2 so its still better than stock

I had to add to my comment, the reason oil is being pulled into the turbo is because the guy had a dirty air filter. so it's sucking vent vapors from the engine, the engine was starving for air , That would never happen if he had a clean air filter. Unknowingly this guy has changed the dynamics Of the motor. If you want to have your oil get dirty more faster by all means do this CCV Mod. Also it's like eating with your bottom and pooping out of your mouth, it might work but it's not the way it was designed to work. I ask this guy , why would you want to make your truck drip oil every place it goes? he said it himself he might want to put in a oil catch can. I have worked on motors over 50 years, don't wreck your motor doing the so called Mods!!!!

Some people always worry about motorcycle riders...but they never seem to actually worry about themselves...funny thing...(?)
They rarely obey the speed laws, they seldom don safety gear to survive a crash, they remove the exhaust baffles/mufflers so they are extremely obnoxious on the road...they weave in/out in traffic and pass illegally when cars are backed up during rush hour...
It is hard to care about the safety/security of those birds if they, themselves won't... So it is mostly 'tough luck' for their lot...
Like someone once said about safety helmets: "If you have a $10 head, buy a $10 helmet"

Hey Nick if your still running this set up on your rig you need to convert it back to stock. The CCV is there to evacuate the positive crank case pressure in your engine. That’s why it’s there before the turbo where it creates vacuum, you are going to prematurely wear the seals in your engine out and mainly damage your turbo seals. If you want further verification please go check out bill at Powerstrokehelp.com ‘s UA-cam channel (Crank case ventilation is a bad idea). He has a whole video on this and really is the man when it comes to these trucks. I am mainly an equipment tech now but I started out with these trucks and personally own a 2002 F-550 as my service truck. Love the channel bud just found you a week ago. Good to see there are still some DIY guys left. Just be careful with the misleading info out there. Remember engineers spent millions designing these engines, not everything from the factory needs tweaking. The older trucks didn’t need a vacuumed CCV because of how they were designed, they had much less blow by then theses low compression high boost engines.

I'm not a fan if the CCV mod International designed it that way. The engine can burn a small amount of oil, and it helps pull crank case pressure out. The reason you're engine was dirty is probably you where the first one to ever wash it. Also you should have replaced the seals on the doghouse (CCV housing) you have done amazing things with bringing this truck back to live, but this mod is something I wouldn't have done.

@@FixItNick Have heard the same not a good mod the turbo needs the misty air supposedly, have not read about the high crankcase psi, however IH did at one time make the same vent filter , still try to sort it out myself to do or not to do....

Get rid of that mod, Internatonal design that to go where it bid to allow some lubrication to the Turbo, put the CCV back before you fry a Turbo

No they didn't, international had it vented to the atmosphere. Ford changed it and vented it into the intake due to emission laws being different between light and medium duty trucks.

313dieselguy from the pedestal there is a flow from there that keeps the bearings good

1st of all they're not bearings they're bushings 2nd of all If he does the exhaust back pressure pedestal delete Which would be advised for him because hes not in cold weather that flow does not go through the Turbo.. Deleting the CCV is one of the worst mods there are.

@@fatfairlane there's a oil supply line that lubricates turbo totally different than ccv or (blowby oil and crank case fumes) the turbo and intercooler work at optimal performance with cool clean dry air.

If this guy had any clue about the so called CCV Mod he would notice the little port inside the rubber tube is facing toward the the filter, not the turbo so as the motor runs, it's forcing air the other way, NOT pulling into the turbo. Also I see by the intake hose he has had dust and dirt going into his motor. So many times these guys think they know better than the engineers. Just drive your truck and don't beat it and it will do just fine for many years.

Not a good idea. You will build up pressure under your piston this pressure over time will send oil out of dip stick or other areas. If it was a gas engine you wouldn't make it a city block before you change it back! Pressure under your piston on a down stroke will change your Power Stroke into a Power Choke!

Makes no sense the mod is still a crankcase vent.

The pressure I was thinking of is under the piston. How is putting a vent on top of cylinder head remove pressure from the block? ARTIFICIAL VACUUM turbo, exhaust, to pull pressure before power stoke and not because of it...

Do it you will find out the hard way why the oil vapor is what it is, kiss your engine goodbye, it costs around 14,000 to 21,000 to tebuild your engine after you did what your doing, talk to the mechanics on what your doing so they have the heads up on your major error, I can tell you have never owned a diesel before.
