I was in China for 10 days at the begging of September during my summer holidays, and Shanghai was the first city I visited. I will never forget the first time I saw the Oriental Pearl. Early evening, a little drizzle, very hot and humid and the skyline was in the clouds. Pictures and videos do not do this place justice. It's otherworldly beautiful. Watching your lovely video I realized how much I miss Shanghai. Hopefully I'll go back next year because I've decided to spend my summer holidays in China from now on (if God wants). Thank you for sharing your experience. Love from Athens - Greece.
Welcome,as a native Chinese who are just sojourning in Shanghai, seeing the complex alongside the Bund and the skyscrapers opposite the river,I feel such a stark difference,so stunning. And the moisture and humidity renders the architectures more stylish. By the way, I've been learning Greek for 3 months,Hope I can visit Greece someday!
@@victorhus Learning Greek is NOT an easy thing to do my friend. You are very brave. Greece welcomes you, if you ever decide to visit. I think Juneyao has a direct flight from Shanghai to Athens now. Just avoid the hot months of July and August. Spring time is the best time to visit, around Easter. 🙂

Haha, many people think that a large Chinese city like Shanghai, with its huge population, would be very crowded and noisy, like Southeast Asian cities filled with the rumble of motorcycles and gasoline-powered vehicles. However, when they actually arrive in Shanghai, they find that everything is quite quiet. The streets are filled with electric vehicles that make very little noise and have zero emissions, which means they don’t pollute the air. I’ve seen too many foreign UA-camrs surprised by the calm atmosphere in Shanghai.
Indeed. When I was in China for the first time, over the holidays in 2006 and into January of 2007, I went to Shanghai on like Boxing Day of 2006 (or maybe the 27th, I can't remember after all these years) and it was very peaceful and really not crowded at all. No wait to go up the Oriental Pearl TV tower, no wait really to get a table at the original Shanghainese xiaolong bao place in Yuyuan garden and so on. Late June of 2010 (during my last trip to China) it was however a completely different story... Not just more of a tourist season in general, but also the world expo being held in Shanghai at the time 😂 It would have been like 3 hours of wait to go up the Oriental Pearl that time. I think most of the crowd was due to the world expo tbh as the event pulled in significantly more people than just regular tourism would. I mainly stayed in Suzhou during my stays in China, it's not very far away from Shanghai. And with me being Swedish, I'm used to being in a country of about 10 million people, so you can imagine the culture shock I was expecting when going to China where many cities have more people in them than my whole home country, but I honestly never felt it was crowded, other than on very few occasions like during the visit in Shanghai during the expo, or when celebrating New Year's at a temple in Suzhou, or being at a subway train in Beijing on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon one time. Other than that it honestly felt less crowded than when going to a medium sized or large city in Scandinavia or Europe. Suzhou alone had some 12 million people in the city and surrounding area at the time when I visited, but somehow they've managed to keep the small town feel in a way. I always felt very relaxed in Suzhou, and it's such a stunning place and good balance between ultra modern and traditional. Shanghai does the same, balancing between ultra modern and traditional
BBC & CNN urge not to travel to China. China is poor, Like to eat cat meat, dog meat and bat meat ,has many homeless people, and is covered with CCTV to monitor tourists and look for opportunities to prosecute tourists.
I just got back from Shanghai, and I was blown away by the place. It's very peaceful, and incredibly clean, no graffiti or litter anywhere. It feels very very safe, walking around late at night etc. Even though it's a huge mega city, the pace of life feels very chilled and relaxed. On the subway, which is amazingly connected, nobody is power-marching to get to work, there's no barging past people, no rush, it's just easy going. One big surprise was just how friendly and hospitable the people are. I've lived in Sydney, and travelled a lot around the USA, and to be honest, I found the Chinese very similar to the British temperament and humour, much more so than the brash 'in your face' humour of the Aussies and Americans. It's an amazing city, I thoroughly recommend visiting.
I love Shanghai, I was there in 2018. The people are so friendly and so much to see. I wish I could have explored more but I was staying and having to work in Pudong for a short while. I experienced 37°C in Suzhou (a bit inland from Shanghai) in July of 2010. Very high humidity in summertime in that part of China, but personally I loved it! Most days were cooler though with only 32-34°C in daytime, and that felt amazing for me with the humidity! The day of 37°C and humidity was the one day I was thinking "hmm, a bit warm today" as I walked to a shopping mall close to my accommodation. I didn't have internet on my phone so couldn't check the weather app until I was back "home" on the wifi, and was surprised to see 37°C 😅 Definitely the hottest weather I've experienced, but very much manageable if sipping on a cold milk tea (I absolutely LOVE the Kirin milk tea, Japanese brand but found in China as well, sadly can't find it here in Sweden and I miss it so much!) and enjoying a matcha Frappuccino at Starbucks. Also, do what locals do and drink jasmine tea or chrysanthemum tea with meals, it sounds counterintuitive to drink warm drinks on a hot day, but it really works well, especially chrysanthemum tea has a cooling effect so it's very pleasant to drink on a hot day. Initially I'd have soda in China, but it didn't take long before I just drank tea with many meals when dining out together with the locals I was staying with
You should all live there. Nice socialist society all the buses running on time just don’t try to say anything against the government or you’ll be on the police bus.

Yes, that street has a lot of Istiklal feel to it, the only thing missing is the simit sellers. Last year I finished reading the Ibis Trilogy, written by Amitav Ghosh, in which he describes in some parts China at the time of the Opium War. How everything has changed now. It will be a pleasure to follow you in the various vlogs that will come from that area. The sound is very good now with the furry microphone! Haha. Regards to both of you from Buenos Aires.

3:18 I think ask stranger’s name is respectful in English.but in China we don't usually ask strangers' names, we call them as beauty, handsome, brother, auntie ...and “shifu”(master)😂 It means a man who is engaged in work, for example, you can call a male chef or driver ‘shifu’
Chinese names are not the same as English names, if a Britishman called John Smith and you ask, what is your name, he will tell you, John. But Chinese surname and name are usually used together, only very closed are called by their names alone. For privacy, stranger don't usually ask each other’s name It's just a cultural difference BTW, Chinese English textbooks that teach us to greet each other in English, be like How are you? fine, thank you. And you? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wow! This city is really huge, super modern, even if I noticed that there are only a few people on the streets! It looks like to be in another planet! Anyway it is clean and ordered and this is very important! Fantastic video, as usual. Thank you for sharing 🍀💕🪻

Excellent video - Shanghai looks great and much more laid back and friendly than I expected. Its the background noise of people and music that I hear in the video, rather than traffic. is this because there are so many electric cars, vans and bikes in the city? Also it doesn't seem to be polluted?
How wonderful. It appears much cleaner than I expected. It seems that the proliferation of electric vehicles has made the city, much, much quieter and cleaner than it was just a few years ago. It’s clear to see the positive effect it’s had on the quality of life there. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to watching future videos from China.

Initially I'd have soda in China, but it didn't take long before I just drank tea with many meals when dining out together with the locals I was staying with
October and April are the best months for visiting Shanghai, the weather is very nice in these two months.
Shanghai is a very good city
We agree 🙃❤️
You should all live there. Nice socialist society all the buses running on time just don’t try to say anything against the government or you’ll be on the police bus.
I spent a week in Shanghai in the early '90's. Absolutely shocking how different it is. But if I could have, I would have stayed too. Glad to see it still has its magic.
Two videos in one week? This Saturday‘s just become a bit better!
Love to explore the world a little more with you two. I‘m finding so many inspirations to travel to myself. Thanks so much!
Will be two a week for the next few months at least 🥰🥳
Can’t wait to share more of China with you, thanks for coming along with us! ❤️
Omg, you got the classic grandpa with the rolled up t-shirt airing his socks in the park!
Shanghai is definitely a "must" place to visit for me. I am staying in Beijing as foreigner now.
Hope you get there soon! ❤️
@@MattandJulia Sure. Will update you if i come there because you inspire me.
China is an incredible country! This video make me want to visit, Amazing trip! ❤😊
Wow! What a beautiful city!
It looks like such a vibrant and beautiful place. Thank you so much for the tour!
10.1-10.7 is China’s National Day holiday. You will see a huge crowd, so please be mentally prepared. So try to avoid attractions that are too popular, otherwise you may collapse if there are too many people.😂😅🙃
Pretty sure this was recorded a month or more ago😂
welcome Matt and Julia to China xx
Thank you so much!! ❤️
Wow I’m impressed 😮. You’d think 30 million people would be suffocating. Guess it must be really spread out. That was a beautiful tour today. Thanks Matt and Julia. ❤
Shanghai seems like an amazing city!!! And, I always love that you both love to try different foods! It’s such a huge part of travel, IMO. I love learning new languages (currently learning Italian) and I think it’s cool you’re going to learn Mandarin Chinese. What a challenge!
wtf Shanghai is beautiful, especially at night! Love Your video, from Germany!
beautiful video!
I love Shanghai! Can’t wait to go back.
Haha, for sure, it’s not the same without people trying to force you in to their respective shops 😅
Oh, interesting, I will check it out! 🙏🏼
Thank you so much Alejandro! Looking forward to sharing more 😍❤️
So few people around and what you've shown looks like tourists, very strange. Parks mostly empty too. Maybe just the time of year or too hot?? Very interesting ❤❤
I think it was because of the excessive heat. Only tourists are silly enough to go out in the midday sun 😌
We all do it 😅
My chinese laoshi(teacher) said that when you are stating a quantity, we use liǎng ge instead of èr when we mean two. Like two apples, we say liǎng gè píngguǒ not èr píngguǒ 22:05
Gonna be my next trip, Cant wait to go to china. The people are so nice and respectful , Great vid.....
3:18 I think ask stranger’s name is respectful in English.but in China we don't usually ask strangers' names, we call them as beauty, handsome, brother, auntie ...and “shifu”(master)😂
It means a man who is engaged in work, for example, you can call a male chef or driver ‘shifu’
Chinese names are not the same as English names, if a Britishman called John Smith and you ask, what is your name, he will tell you, John.
But Chinese surname and name are usually used together, only very closed are called by their names alone.
For privacy, stranger don't usually ask each other’s name
It's just a cultural difference
BTW, Chinese English textbooks that teach us to greet each other in English, be like
How are you?
fine, thank you. And you?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Subscribed, nice one!
Welcome to Shanghai,guys.😀
Wow! This city is really huge, super modern, even if I noticed that there are only a few people on the streets! It looks like to be in another planet! Anyway it is clean and ordered and this is very important!
Fantastic video, as usual. Thank you for sharing 🍀💕🪻
2Passports1dream is also in China, not sure if you are still there but they seem to do similar things as you guys. Maybe you could catch up with them as I think you guys have a similar vibe. Love your video’s.
Thank you so much! It’s a pleasure to have you along with us 🥰 Ah nice, they seem really lovely ❤️
Excellent idea to study Mandarin for a month . It certainly will make the visit to China much more interesting.
Excellent video - Shanghai looks great and much more laid back and friendly than I expected.
Its the background noise of people and music that I hear in the video, rather than traffic.
is this because there are so many electric cars, vans and bikes in the city?
Also it doesn't seem to be polluted?
Really glad you enjoyed it!! ❤️
Yes exactly, the amount of electric vehicles make is surprisingly quiet in the city centre 😍
And no, the air quality was very good, not sure if it changes by season though 🤔
OMG! CHiina economy is down!
There are barely no people on SHanghai streets.
@@zackk7175 Not sure you are being sarcastic or an idiot.
@@bldomain It doesn't.
Chiina is down and foreigners are leaving,
Said Taiiwanese!
Wow! I wanna go on vacation to China someday 😮
very cool video! :) someday i will visit!! my work also has a huge office and lab here so maybe for work i will get to go! :)
Enjoy!
Welcome 🎉🎉🎉
so much fun to your vedio exploring my city, hope you two enjoy the trip
there is a list of must-trys: a list of noodles (scallion noodle), dumplings (fried dumpling, soup dumpling)....
Looking forward to sharing more, thank you for joining us! ❤️🙌🏼
Matt is such a diva. He wants someone to fan him lol😂
Hahahaa, I am ngl 😁
Thank you. Visiting in winter and can’t wait, your video is amazing.
shanghai is a great place. been there in 2011,honestly i cant remember much and i would love to go back there. if you have the time, i would recommend you to explore jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces in northern china. safe trip!
Thanks for your amazing vlog that shows how modern Shanghai looks like and has so many high rise buildings that are more than those in North America!
Great vlog folks and it’s incredible that this city has more than 3 times the population of London which is also a busy place but great job on making this vlog roll on the next ones 😊😅😅
Knowing even a few words goes a long way. Don't be afraid to interact.
Matt and Julia ❤ love from India
Lots of love to India! ❤️
Great video! I’m really happy that you’re uploading more and excited to follow your trip ❤ Shanghai looks like a really interesting city, food looked interesting - thanks for sharing! ❤
So true ❤
It is like another planet! 😍
Glad to see you guys traveling again and I can vicariously travel though you guys!! ❤
So happy to have you travelling along with us! ❤️🙌🏼
@@MattandJulia 🥰
1:55 K11 love that mall
SH Yun Nan Road is very famous for the restaurants and Shanghai local food, but as the buildings are very old. The government will demolish or renovate old buildings, update this street then will re-open.
You should have gone to West Lake and the Suzhou garden that nobody should miss, and it is not too far away from Shanghai.
Thanks for the recommendation! Next time for sure 😍
Hurry up then, no messing about, loads and loads more content guys, fantastic x
Thank you. Very nice.
❤️❤️❤️
What a fantastic video! I also just adore you both. Can't wait to come along on the rest of your journey. -Ms J
I believe you will have an unforgettable journey in your lifetime. Wish you a pleasant journey.
youdunzi油墩子,back in the days, kids have these from a grandma's cart outside of their schools. love these old shanghai snacks
