I'm a Beijing native who lives right next to that garage sale, and I bought the exact same one in April for ¥40, but I had a long bargain with them, so I don't think your ¥50 was too expensive. This beads r a counter for Buddhist elders and a relaxing toy for young people, and you just need to touch it every day to turn it ruby red.😊
So proud of you both! I love how you’re using the Chinese you’ve learned so far. Very impressive! I keep thinking of when you both are old and get to look back on all of these incredible experiences you’re having! So rich with experiences and no regrets, I would hope!
I am really enjoying this insightful series. Your genuine interest in Chinese culture and way of life make simple videos like this so enjoyable!! For the beads I would have started with 30 and see what their reaction is lol
The way Julia talked about the beads made me think of "fidget" toys I had in my Elementary School classroom. I taught numerous children who were able to sit quieter and pay attention better if they had something to fidget!
Learning Chinese or for that matter any other language but your own, opens up a whole new world. Knowlege is power. Having friends from around the world is something we always cherish. You guys seem to have those very nice qualities. We wish you guys the greatest success with learning chinese. Sending you much love❤❤ from Harriet, Jim and Yuki P.S. Have you tried plain old Durian? hehe.
watching this video reminds me of 24 years ago when I first came to the US as a teenager. During my first week of learning English and using my poor English skills to make my first purchase, I was so happy at that time. I feel the same way as you do now. By the way, thanks for the video. Stay safe and have a great holiday
Your both doing great with learning the new language, and bargaining with vendors is never easy. lol Even here in the states at flea markets you have to bargain a lot. I've always loved calligraphy. You both are doing awesome with it. What an experience you both are having. I am blown away and loving that you are taking us all along. Thank you. Be safe, feel better, and stay warm.
A couple of things. Julia i love that blue and white fleece you have. Did you buy it there? And those fruit that cost so much with the stones. What are they and what do you do with the stones from them. Love your worry beads also. What are they made from? Amazing that your language skills are coming on so well. Love as always❤❤
Interesting to watch, bc I've just started learning mandarin at home: not sure how far behind these videos are, but seems literally about the same time you guys started. I'm using Paul Noble's course, and it's basic but I'm retaining everything so far.
Those beads remind me of Greek "worry beads" or even the komboskini in Greek, chotki in Russian. I have a prayer rope, mostly knotted wool or cord, but also a few of wood or other material.
Your videos are so fascinating that will always be waiting for updates! Hope you guys can have fine everyday in China and share with us your celebrations at Christmas.
Love ur vidsssssss❤❤❤❤❤ Chinese s one of the most difficult language, ur progresss s just fabbbbb. A lot more advanced now tbh, waaaaayyyy much better than I hv expected tbh loooool 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 must have put in loads of hard work!!!!!
I'm glad you're making progress with the language and are able to interact successfully with the vendors. I didn't know there was a bargain culture in China like in Islamic markets...I hate bargaining too. What you were drawing in calligraphy class has something to do with radicals? 部首 (bùshǒu) An Argentine girl who has lived in China for years says that it is important to study radicals and that it helps a lot with reading. I would surely go crazy before I could understand any of it. Love to both
You guys seem to be picking up the language quickly. I think it's brave of you to even try. lol My daughter in law is from China, came over here when she was 3. Her wedding reception was fascinating as all of the food was delicious and some I would never try ordinarily (I even bravely tried the octopus). It was 9 courses of delicious food and not one of what Americans get in a Chinese restaurant. 😂
Fascinating 😊. You did well with the ‘worry’ beads! Good price. I loved this episode. I’ve been watching DeWan on YT . He goes around markets everywhere. They make many different styles of savoury pancakes. Maybe that’s what your naan filled type bread was. The foods sold at these markets have really surprised me. I didn’t think the Chinese ate so many bread products. I’ve taught my grandchildren Niihau…. Spelling atrocious no doubt …😂 now sisi….thank you. 😂. China looks more and more appealing with every YT video I see. ❤ 👋🏻
It's close to my company, but I've never been to this market. It's cold in Beijing recently, but the weather is good. I wish you all the best in Beijing.
Mandarin: 如此勇敢地与当地人讨价还价。我在中国的时候可没这么干过。尤其是用中文。你做得非常好。 English: So brave bargaining with locals. I have not done that when I was in China. Especially in Chinese. You did a very good job.
Good job learning and experiencing lots of the local things! I speak mostly fluently. I do think SHOCKED is a bit of a stretch... It is possible to just say 你好 and have people tell you 'so good, 好棒’. But, guess that's needed for the algorithm. USD prices would be nice, I can convert instantly but most viewers may not know 元
You two are very Chinese now, congradulations! As to the price of the artifact on the market, there are many reasons for the decision of the price, one is how rare of the item, or how difficult to make one. I don't see the detail of the first bracelet that asking for 500, but the one you buy is very likely a chain of 108 bodhi seed, it is considerably easy to get, so the price sold is not very high. As to the walnut later, the pair that the seller get out from the bag seems like a very rare collection, which might have a very rare shape, for example a pair of three ridges walnuts, and from the color I would guess it has patina of being long played by previous owner, and that is why it could cost a fortune. Very interesting visit. I was at Pan Jia Yuan twice, not really baught anything.
The one you baught is called prayer beads, popular used for Dao chanting or Buddhism chanting. It functions as a calculater, that when you chant once, your hand counts one bead. when you comes again to the beginning/ending bead, you know you finish a cycle of chanting. Nowaday people play with it as an antique object rather than a regious object.
Your beads are like the ones we had in Iraq as a child. They were called "worry beads" and one would sit and click through them. Some recite the various names of God; 1 name per click. They are very relaxing and some say, addictive. Enjoy!
I have heard of this place from a novel, called 'Ghost blowing the candle'. It's the Chinese equivalent to Tomb raider or Indiana Jones. This is where the side character in the novel sells his fake antiques, but occasionally would also get an authentic item.
Thanks for sharing such valuable information! I need some advice: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). What's the best way to send them to Binance?
Thanks to Noel Philips for letting the world know that this China series of yours is brought to you by the PRC. I honestly enjoy watching you guys but I feel kinda icky now.
Excuse me? You’re living in a parallel universe if you genuinely believe this 😁 As with every moment since we started this channel, we travel where we want off our own backs 👍🏻 However, I’m very intrigued, please send us a link to this 😂
Those apple-like things are walnuts. But they're not meant to be eaten, they're left to be played with in the palm of the hand, so they're called “文玩核桃”
As a Chinese, nowadays it is far better to live in China than in the West with all the modern conveniences. But not so long ago it was the other way around. It is hard to known what their lowest prices are, one has to be satisfied with what they have bargained for if you go to this kind of market. Most Chinese food are fully cooked, therefore, it is unusual to get an upset stomach.
you guy should catch any Chinese people when you wake around on the street to practice your Chinese with them, it is the best way to learn Chinese, much more helpfull then in the classroom.
