Having been to China a few times, flying in and out of Shanghai as I was staying in Suzhou which is pretty close to Shanghai. Shanghai is pretty amazing, it's such a mix between traditional and ultra modern that makes western cities look like we're stuck in the 1800's here in the west. I was expecting China and especially Shanghai to be super crowded because of the population, but it really isn't unless you're in some very touristy spot and especially if there's some event or major holiday going on. During my last visit to China, the world expo was being held in Shanghai (2010) and that was honestly the only time I saw Shanghai being very crowded because there wasn't just locals and regular visitors, but also a lot of people who was there due to the expo. During my first visit in late 2006, I was up in the Oriental Pearl tower and had really nice lunch in the revolving restaurant up there, both good food and amazing views! Soup dumplings in Shanghai are the best! Been to the original restaurant for Shanghainese xiaolong bao in Yuyuan garden a couple of times, and even now over 14 years after my last visit, I'm still missing those dumplings!

Chinese traffic is as quiet as it is partially because non electric scooters were banned from being sold in the country (at least the cities) many years ago, so unless you see a proper motorcycle, you're unlikely to see any two wheeled vehicle that isn't electric or manually pedalled. It was like this already at the time when I went to China a few times between late 2006 and summer of 2010, and going by this video, the traffic is even more silent now than when I went. More electric vehicles in general now compared to 14+ years ago. I always loved my time in China
You haven't been to China, please don't spread rumors. The fact is that gasoline motorcycles are purchased at will, but they belong to motor vehicles, but electric bicycles don't need to follow the motorcycle road rules and drive in the bicycle lane. Therefore, people prefer electric bicycles to gasoline motorcycles for short-distance trips, and the reasons for the popularity of electric vehicles in China are good quality, low price, intelligence and low travel expenses.
You might have misunderstood some facts that what has been forbidden in Shanghai is Fuel-assisted bicycle, not fuel motorcycle. You can still purchase a fuel motorcycle(eg. retro motorcycles are hot these days in this city), if you like, but you must spend more cost on the license and it's much less economical and less convenient, since motorcyles are not allowed to drive in inner circle and certain areas of the city. Therefore, people choose e-cycles naturally for practical reasons.

Hi Phil, I am Japanese and my husband is a Newfoundlander or a big white guy. I think my husband would’ve done the same at dinner time and just grab the serving plate to make his plate. I probably would’ve done the same as Deanna and eaten out of the bowl I was given Just to fit in with the locals.
This said "Chinese food greasy" are not their own cooking foreigners, but anyone who has seen mayonnaise, cheese, cake, cookies are how to do, can not say this kind of words, Chinese just look at the oil, Western food can not see what oil but we eat it all
10:25 You are wasting soy sauce or vinegar of that shop. Nobody in China will put that many soy sauce or vinegar into the bowl. Wanton soup is, by custom, meant to be with very few condimentes. If you don’t like plain food, you can just order Sichuan style wonton or put sauce into a small plate.
Since you brought it up, it should surprises you more that started in 2024, every two cars sold in Mainland China, one of them is electric/plug-in hybrid. And China consumes 30 millions plus cars every year, equals the US, Japan and the EU combined, imagine that.
@ I keep seeing 1 million “plus” EV sales in China for this or that month If the numbers stay the same we are taking at least 12 million EVs sold There is the Nov 11 Singles day, coming up in a week… So it is possible to see even bigger sales figures for these last 2 months of 2024 I’m predicting 14 million EVs sold in China for 2024
@@FAFORednickincell Bro, I quoted my own comment for you already, it is EVs+Hybrid, not EV alone, they are different. So I just did some researches for you, 2.5 millions cars(bus and truck included) were sold here in Mainland China last month, 714000 of them were new energy ones(EV+Hybrid). And currently 29% of all the cars on the road are new energy ones.

We went on a silk road tour with a British travel agency and visited many really small towns and rural spots in the far west of China and we were impressed by how vibrant the communities were and their range of amenities and infrastructural provisions. Conversely, we were stunned by the poverty in Florida, when we were last there on an academic conference, once outside the major cities. Food for thought indeed for us Brits brainwashed daily by disinformation from our mainstream media narratives.
What a hater!!! Don't you know the fact that life in rural in China is very advance? visit China yourself, otherwise, you are still a frog in the well.
Yes, the difference between small and big cities in China is mainly in terms of urban size, but there is not much difference in building quality. However, the rural areas in China have a completely opposite scenery. Their natural scenery is very beautiful, without high-rise buildings, it is comparable to villa areas.
I guess I would just have to go hungry most of the time if it wasn't handheld food because I never did eat with chopsticks or learned how to. I would request a Fork & Spoon !!
Why do you make it sound like Shanghai is a like a "Police State" just because you happened to see police presence on the street. Seriously with Shanghai population of over 25 million people, even larger than many European countries(not cities), the ratio of policemen to the population is almost negligible. And for your information, the police are there for your safety and certainly not to control the people activities like in a "police state"!
Yeah, go ahead and say something negative about the government, or do something on Chinese social media that's considered wrong or against establishment order. See how those police handle the situation.
China is cool, but it IS a police state. Go to Tokyo w 30 million people. You barely see the police, no one is scared to talk to them and there is NOT survellance cameras on EVERY building & street corner. But I still like China, they are doing many things to improve the lives of their poor people!!!
in Chinese cities, the more you close to the city center or tourist site, the more policeman you can see. in other parts of the cities, there is not so many policemen on the streets.

@@yharnamiyhill787 I've been to China plenty of times already, thanks. I love the country and I miss going there. That doesn't stop me from being against their government and the literal communist dictator in charge. I'm well aware there are public protests in China all the time. And who said they weren't peaceful in China? The people are wonderful usually in China. However, having public protests is one thing, being on a government list or arrested for bashing the government etc. later on, is another thing. Hearing a German spout out the Scottish phrase "a wee boy" made me chuckle. Just as a point of reference, the Shanghai Tower is only second if it's measured in height to the highest occupiable floor, otherwise it's now the third highest as the Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur has taken second place by 47 meters.
True. And we just were in KL looking at Merdeka 118. But tbh, I think it's silly counting these thin spikes like on Merdeka. So many buildings do that just for the numbers... So in my opinion, Shanghai Tower is still number #2. But that's just a wee boy's opinion. :D
Merdeke is,as the name suggests, merde. It’s listed number two because of the antenna. It’s a joke compared to Shanghai tower. And I have been to both places
I have to happily tell you that we have quit from the high-rise building competition, so any country that wants to build high-rise buildings doesn't have to worry about competition from China. Our government (China) has banned the construction of any high-rise buildings over 500 meters. This is wise because the maintenance costs and fire safety of high-rise buildings are a big issue.
@@DeanaandPhil These high-rise buildings are all from the past. We are now paying more attention to the quality of life, so you will see more parks between cities instead of high-rise buildings.

Maybe because THE China in their mind is too bad.
Hi Phil,
I am Japanese and my husband is a Newfoundlander or a big white guy.
I think my husband would’ve done the same at dinner time and just grab the serving plate to make his plate. I probably would’ve done the same as Deanna and eaten out of the bowl I was given Just to fit in with the locals.
This said "Chinese food greasy" are not their own cooking foreigners, but anyone who has seen mayonnaise, cheese, cake, cookies are how to do, can not say this kind of words, Chinese just look at the oil, Western food can not see what oil but we eat it all
Cities aren't loud, cars are loud. Greetings to NJB ;)
Or simply put some soy sauce in it...?
Deana, the French restaurant we went together 12 years ago, closed forever...... LOL
Since you brought it up, it should surprises you more that started in 2024, every two cars sold in Mainland China, one of them is electric/plug-in hybrid. And China consumes 30 millions plus cars every year, equals the US, Japan and the EU combined, imagine that.
1400000000
Right now the EV car projection is 10 million for 2024....
rumblings of 11 to 12 million EV cars this year
15 million EVs would be mind blowing
@@FAFORednickincell "One of them is electric/plug-in hybrid."
@ I keep seeing 1 million “plus” EV sales in China for this or that month
If the numbers stay the same we are taking at least 12 million EVs sold
There is the Nov 11 Singles day, coming up in a week…
So it is possible to see even bigger sales figures for these last 2 months of 2024
I’m predicting 14 million EVs sold in China for 2024
@@FAFORednickincell Bro, I quoted my own comment for you already, it is EVs+Hybrid, not EV alone, they are different.
So I just did some researches for you, 2.5 millions cars(bus and truck included) were sold here in Mainland China last month, 714000 of them were new energy ones(EV+Hybrid). And currently 29% of all the cars on the road are new energy ones.
What’s the BGM of the last scene please ?

The difference between urban and rural is a good indicator for a lot of things. 😉
@SLAVAUKRAINI-y6p Boring, no such option in the UN.
Their natural scenery is very beautiful, without high-rise buildings, it is comparable to villa areas.
the rural area is even more beautiful, slow-peace, laid back and more afforadble.

Thanks for showing me Shanghai! I guess besides the sandwich, the Chinese also invented bolognese LOL
I guess I would just have to go hungry most of the time if it wasn't handheld food because I never did eat with chopsticks or learned how to. I would request a Fork & Spoon !!
Most places have at least fork and spoon if you ask for it. But tbh, it's not difficult to learn and master how to use chopsticks
you can buy learner chopsticks that have a spring at the back they work abit like tongs easy to carry not expensive

They have public protests all the time. Lot more peaceful than you think. You should try going there instead of projecting your own police state - America.
I have friends who I made while there who were taken in by the government for spouting anti-government sentiments or pro-democratic ideals. It's not some made up thing that anti-China people say, it actually happens. If you deny that, oh well - can't really help you there, I guess.

12:51 The police in China are very different from those in the US and Europe where the police can be very violent and harassing. You have to be very thankful that they are there because they are there to serve and protect the people so that there is social order, peace and freedom. You can enjoy your stay in China without fear of being stampeded or even getting lost. The police there are usually very friendly and helpful.
