Max, hi. It’s not just in China 🇨🇳 that people take off their shoes 👞 when entering a household. This is the Asian culture where inside the house 🏡 is clean and outdoor shoes are NOT to be walked into with. Same with Singapore 🇸🇬, Malaysia 🇲🇾, Japan 🇯🇵, Hong Kong 🇭🇰, India 🇮🇳, Korea 🇰🇷, Indonesia 🇮🇩, the Philippines 🇵🇭…..etc….
As for me and my family, we have lived in Japan 🇯🇵 and now Hong Kong 🇭🇰, we have been brought up to be aware of cleaniness, hygiene and a sign of respect 🫡 as not to dirty the interior of the house.
As the lady said, American and European just walk into their house with shoes on and some even have their shoes on while relaxing on the bed 🛏️ or while on the sofa 🛋️.

    • @OoomKoch

As Indonesian. I still don't understand, why westerners don't take off their shoes in the house. As it's dirty, and maybe they use public toilet, which is considered unhygienic.

I think the anglophone countries tend to be more individualistic. It makes sense if you consider how far flung the old colonies are - people literally moved thousands of kilometers away from their families and friends. The early history of settlements can be quite definitive for those countries. People in the UK or Europe are really set in their way because all those with a sense of adventure left for the colonies. In terms of the UK - you would have to be really old money with all your assets tied up in the country to want to stay in a place with such dreary weather.

Since she was often cast as the villain because she's American, perhaps she might understand the plight of Asian Americans, who until very recently were relegated to roles as villains, or as one-dimensional stock characters like martial artists or nerds. Difference is, Asians have been here in large numbers for well over a century, yet they have been portrayed as outsiders. Americans in China are almost always expats, living there temporarily like this woman. So while being cast as the mean CEO isn't entirely fair, it makes a little more sense than routinely casting Asian Americans as foreigners.

The similarity between the Chinese and the Americans is that a lot of them are so entrenched in their way of life, thinking, culture and brain washing by the politicians/media etc that they don’t realise they are different. Both of them think their country is the greatest country in the world and they are the role models and people should be more like them. It’s much more prevalent in China, which is why they will compare everything with China when they travel overseas. Americans can be pretty quick in labelling you if you have different views, beliefs or opinions, which some see it as a society that has become more divisive and of course some will blame it on Trump.
Chinese and Americans are enterprising and hard working when it comes to work but Guan Xi plays a much bigger role in China and it’s not a good thing. The Chinese will always think of Guan Xi first in everything that they do, including going to the hospital, getting a job, applying for a license, etc.
The Chinese have strong family values but some of the customs, values or beliefs like filial piety might not be a good thing. Kids are seen as an insurance policy for old age although it’s not so prevalent now as people’s thinking are changing. Americans value independence but they also have strong family values and will take care of their parents even if they live far apart.

There is more to ‘Europe’ than France. France also has major regional differences. Europe is basically a patchwork of regions, each very different due to history. Indeed, there’s always a reason for those differences.

I’m American and not proud to be American. The problem with China is it has the same surveillance state issues, human rights abuses. That’s the problem with superpowers. School yard bully syndrome. Huge militaries. Europe and Russia are a bit more colder. Europe is okay for a vacation.

Have you ever been to China recently? "Surveillance state" is there for public safety and people like it, in fact it's an essential feature of Chinese society. People have willingly given away so much power over them to their Government because they trust their Gov. China has uplifted 400 millions Chinese people from poverty during the last 20 years. Chinese Gov doesn't misuse people's money like in America. Their Gov is owned by the people unlike in America. I know this is a bit paranoid and nasty sounding to Americans who value "freedom" over anything else but most people in this world value decent life over freedom, trust me on that.

10:40 she lived for so long in China, but speaks about it as if she never set foot in the country. The reason grandparents live together with the parents and kids is because they have no choice. There is no pension or social security in China. Same for the accident. The reason people don't rush to help is because Chinese people tend to sue each other for no reason if you are involved in an accident or try to help. There are many videos about this on real Chinese youtube channels.

It is you who had never set foot in China. for example, China's social security coverage rate has reached more than 95%. This means that most workers can enjoy various social insurance and welfare benefits, including pension insurance, medical insurance, unemployment insurance, etc. You can visit China and interview the people randomly and get the answer by yourself.

Moving out just to have fun wasting Government money is not the flex you think it is, Chinese have it 100% over there. You work hard and live with your family, that way society thrives as a whole, not individuals.

I'm Malaysian Indian American . I'm very well received in the United States where I live and I also teach in Malaysia and a lot of my students if not the most are from the PRC that is China. I have to defer with this nice lady and I respect her. But many anecdotes and data also show that the Chinese are less welcoming to foreigners especially darker skin foreigners from Africa. In principle they are supposed to be Marxist Communists they're not supposed to show prejudice but ethnically and as a culture they are quite xenophobic. During Covid a lot of African students in the major cities in Southern China suffered prejudice, who were evicted for no reason other than being black and from Africa. So please dig deeper and if you look at stats and talk to African students in China you will learn the truth. Americans are very welcoming I don't know if you've ever lived in the United States Max but I highly recommend that you travel here and talk to Asians, talk to Indian American who are very successful and educated here and look to the diversity here. Not just talk to Europeans in Singapore or Malaysia or India It's good that you're going to India and you have cleared up some stereotypes about India but you have to talk to more people in the United States within the United States and you can talk to the Asians in the United States. Otherwise you're run the risk of creating a distorted view by the starting to a few people. Chinese people have a notion of superiority and if you look at the Chinese Sinology they believe Yellow people are second after White people and they are looking downwards towards people of other colors. So this lady is a nice lady however she does not know deep culture.
When she talks at extended families living together she's talking really about not just Chinese culture but also Asian culture from India to Malaysia and so on. It's also African and also Middle Eastern. So let's not have the impression there's only China that has extended families and therefore it's better than America It's really too narrow a prism.
The US is a genuine meritocracy so Asians do very well here. And there are Asians yes who abuse the system They do spy and they do steal intellectual property. So please let's widen the narrative If you're making comparisons do not talk to a very narrow base because you create a very distorted perception and that does not help relations. There many Asians who live in the US and who love Asia and am proud of the Asian heritage and they will disagree with this lady.
