WipEout Intro Cinematic Remake

- This is a remake of the intro cinematic used for the first Wipeout game title on both PS1 and Sega Saturn. Still love those games and of course the related soundtracks as well!
I originally started to work on that way back in 2009 but dropped the project for various reasons.
In 2021 I got back to it after finding some old files related to it on my hard drives. I built everything new from scratch, of course technology has come so much further in the meantime as well. It uses a few kitbash sets, which was not really a thing back in 2009.
It was done predominantly in 3dsmax and V-Ray, with additional stuff from Houdini and Renderman. - Ігри

What software and computer did you use back in the day ? Silicon Graphics ?
@@BenoitAdam Silicon Graphics Indy with an Onyx to help render the frames. All built in Softimage and edited together in Eddy :)

That makes you officially one of my childhood heros! :) The original is still impressive in its own right! I tried to guess at what might have been artistic decisions and what might be pure technical limitations back then for you. I wanted to lift the technical limitations but not completely skew it away from the feel, pacing and camera angles. Some shots are near identical, a few others look drastically different, mainly the flight over the environment.

While I was working on the timing of the cinematic I was always muttering "...wipEout!" to myself at the end. :)

It all started way back in 2009 in the WipeoutZone forums! Sad to see it mostly deserted now.
I was part of the Wipeoutzone forums for a little while. I just put out a track for BallisticNG's Steam Workshop. This remade intro is AMAZING dude.

Your attention to detail , realism, and accuracy is absolutely breathtaking.
The paint wear ,impact cracks, scrape marks in the tracks... I now know what I want the next Wipeout to look like. This more than a tribute. It's a prototype.
I hope Sony is taking notes.

oh my god this is so awesome!! it looks amazing!! the scratches on the ship, the screens, the pilot inside, the sand falling when the doors open, the afterburner. its all awesome!!
This was brilliant! Really incredible stuff. Now I'd love to see a remake of the game to go along with it! Hopefully one day Sony will put out a new WipEout game that includes all the original games circuits and ships etc

The first five WipEout games (the original, 2097, 64, 3 and Fusion) all need to be remade with PS5-quality graphics, sounds and physics, and this reimagined intro gives me a little bit of hope!

WipeOut should evolve into, as my friend Lobyz says, "the Gran Turismo of Anti-gravity racers"
Refining the subtile gameplay (physics) of the original
Getting ever more into graphics realism and beauty
All of that into worlds (maps) that are "anticipation" rather than futurism
I'm glad anybody still care about WipEout fandom with this masterpiece!

Not at the moment, no. If at all, I'd do a remake of 3. The 2097 one still looks pretty good in my opinion and is mostly limited due to being low resolution. The intro for part 3 was something very different, that might be cool to redo at some point though.

This is probably the best remake of a classic intro I've seen. Ridge racer V remade intro is second place now, search it on UA-cam.

That sounds great. Something to do with anti-gravity racing? Personally, I think Sony would do well to dramatise a Wipeout story for the big screen.

I have so much love for you, wow, this is absolutely amazing! I still remember getting a Playstation on my 13th birthday and sneaking out of bed in the middle of the night before the big day and secretly plugging in the PSX, popping in wipEout and getting to see this glorious intro for the first time. My mind was blown out of space. Packed everything back up and went back to bed, incredibly excited. The wipEout series went on to become my favorite of all time, and played a big part in me becoming a graphic designer.
To see this intro remade in such a tasteful, faithful and well-paced way is a huge treat - thank you so much for that!
This video needs 50 million views so Sony wake up and make another wipEout!

Thanks James! The intro for the first one suffered the most from technical limitations I felt. The intro for the second title (XL / 2097) released a few years later was already much much better looking and by todays standards suffers mostly from the very low resolution but is otherwise pretty good.
I may not be a veteran of the series starting with hd and going down all the way to 2097 but this is God tier work.

Other than the fact that logos (Assegai) and branding from other teams ("Future-Proof", "Race for E-Unity") are on an AG-Systems ship, this is an amazing tribute to OG WipEout.

Concerning other intros: Nothing is planned right now, if at all I'd be interested in a remake of the wipeout 3 since that is so different to the others.

Holy jezus that was fantastic, FANTASTIC! The effort that must have gone into recreating all those assets from scratch with added details given we live in a 4K (& beyond) resolution era. And then there are the animations! I reckon the original helped with the timings of them but that is still a shit ton of time consuming effort. Goodness fucking gracious, half way through I was thinking a 3D animated limited run Wipeout show would be fantastic at this fidelity given Sony, after closing Psygnosis/Studio Liverpool, has likely abandoned any sequels to the franchise for the foreseeable future.
Kudos to you again and may your talent and the time you have sunk in this project provide you with unforeseen opportunities.

THIS is what 2048 should have looked like! Expanding the original with elements from the intro and leaning into "realism" of the experience etc.
Seeing the old Psygnosis logo at that high a resolution... I have a lump in my throat.
Just now noticed the 4th wall break on the ships design with all team logos and mottos
