  • A retrospective about the genesis of arguably the greatest futuristic racing game series of all time - Wipeout. All in game footage captured from an original black label PAL version of the game being played on a real Playstation console.

I adored this and Wipeout 2097 back in the day. The gameplay was great and the soundtrack was phenomenal! Takes me back to the 90's and all the time spent clubbing and hanging out in music stores looking for great new tracks. Happy, happy days!!!

Man, what a series that needs more love! I still can't believe how long we've had to wait for a new game and not a rehash. Auricom was my fav team.

Wipeout was awesome.. The reaction time required was utmost necessary for all full races .. Or a good memory. I loved it 🤘👍🇳🇿

Fr, Arridos IV and Silverstream in the Rapier championship are insane. Honestly this arcade racer from '95 has given me some of the most intense races of any other title! Lol

First one I played was 2097 and then 3, which is my favourite, especially the SE version. Tough after playing them going back to the original. There is a Phantom Edition for the pc now which looks pretty good and deals with the harsh wall collision, which is my biggest issue with the first one

Thanks for the tip! The source port is awesome! I do think it feels a bit pedestrian without the wall collisions though. The 2nd one was so much faster that you really needed to be able to "grind" along the sides to get any sort of flow going, but taking the threat of collision away from the original makes it a bit of a coast for me, at least in the slower class.
The second one was improvement in many many ways although it does have greater flaws too for me - the auto pilot frequently dumps you into the barrier in the middle of a sharp turn and the quake weapon looks super cool but also blocks your view for a couple of seconds.
The original game is the "purest" of the 3 for me and I also prefer it aesthetically over the others (particularly 3) but that's just my personal taste. Don't get me wrong I think all three are truly great games. Thanks for watching.

@@retromuel I agree, part of the challenge (in the last two tracks especially) is negotiating the tight, windy turns cleanly and efficiently. You take the punishment of hitting the wall away, and that purposeful, challenging design decision goes out the window.

Great video I've found this late, good vibe and a spot on perspective. I played the original on the Ps1 and was bliwn away the sonics the visuals were an assault on the sense's.

Awesome review! Just picked up the game. Most reviews compare later game's features and graphics, I bought the first one for feeling playing, you nailed it with the grungy feel of the earlier games. That intro to the game gets me more hyped than anything modern, up there with the Ghost in the Shell intro

Great video, thank you. I've been a Sega fanboy too but I've always adored those PS1 Wipeout games, they're absolutely astonishing. My first one was 2097 though and has been my favorite since. Need to play the original more. 3 was great too but not to the same degree as before, it was more soft but still had the last remaints of grungy aesthetics

great video. i had no idea playstation’s early success in the UK owed in part to the glory days of rave. very cool, would love to read a book on the subject

Great retrospective! I too am a Saturn fan and I love the old school arcade games, but as you said there's something unique about how cool wipeout looks and sounds. I hope you get your views up soon, people are missing out on your channel. On a side note, have you seen how cool the Japanese saturn cover art for Wipeout XL looks?
    cheers

Thank you very much, man. Glad you enjoyed it. I just Googled it and yeah that is a very cool cover indeed. I don't have the Saturn versions of Wipeout actually but I did just pick up the 3d accelerated PC version of 2097 which I'm really looking forward to testing out on my Windows 98 pc once my kid goes to bed! Cheers

I've not played a lot of it but pacer manages to capture the wipeout gameplay, but maybe not the aesthetic and magic of wipeout. It's some of he same devs I believe.

BallisticNG if you want a true Wipeout experience. It is fantastic.

I've been looking at BallisticNG and Redout 2, first I've heard of Pacer though. A bit pricey though, $40. Might grab that on a sale.

i think wip3out has a really good like cover art and it looks so enticing to buy but i look at wipeout and wipeout 2097 and there is a huge difference in the tone in those games i like wip3out's look decently but it doesnt hit the same at least not from what i've seen so far

I love when Nintendo Fans are saying this is a copy of F-Zero.
Hmm F-Zero is just a Copy of Lukes Landspeeder.
Jokes aside, F-Zero started the genre but Wipeout made AG racing popular like the Ford T Model the automobil.

I had the same demo to boot up the psx for the first time and wipeout was my first contact ever with a 3d game. I was utterly shcked. One day before I was playing SONIC 2 and suddenly I was playing fucking wipeout with that unbelievable rave music. I had to buy that game. And all the sequels for years to come. Currently I make music inspired bt this game so I wanna thanks the devs. Check out TRAGICHAPPINESS - ECLIPSE (yes, that’s my musical project). Thanks🎉😂😇
