Similar to the reason I started sparring some years back... it was a lot more honest. Someone looking you in the eye and trying to punch you in the face or body is so much less violent and damaging than most divorces or other things women will do to you. It's such a good stress relief, and forces you to manage your feelings.

Hi Tony, thanks for the excellent boxing tips. I am a 52 year old English teacher in Japan. I have been boxing for over 20 years, just regular bag/mitt training with a bit of light sparring on occasion. I kind of thought that I had probably got about as good as I was ever going to get (not that good), but watching your vids over the last few years has motivated me and given me the tools to make some noticeable improvement. Thank you. (BTW - you might want to check the spelling of "bucket hat" on your shop website - sorry, English teacher😊)

Tony, I can't thank you enough. I had my first sparring against a taller opponent. He kept getting me with his jab and 1-2-3. I just didn't see the hook. Thanks to your advice, I tuck my chin, stay lower and all of a sudden, I'm way faster due to being more bent in my knees. Now I have more power from the ground as well. I'll work on getting inside with the 1-2-1 as you said. I also love going forward with the 1-1-2 but don't know if that's a good choice or not. It was my first sparring and he's having a fight soon. The coach said that I did really well but need to unleash some of my power (which I have a lot of, luckily). I'll work on your speed tips for sure. Thanks again! You are simply the man. It's rare to find an expert in their field who is equally impressive at teaching.

I train kickboxing & Sikaran, here's my basic philosophy on striking: #1: Know how to strike, basics first always drill them, drill them & then drill them more (You can watch two black belts fight and 90% of what you see will be the basics, consider that) #2: Given both opponents know how to strike the faster opponent generally wins, #3: If both are fast he who has the best timing wins. These are the primary things I feel out at the start of a match to understand my opponent first. For instance if I know that I'm faster than my opponent I'll feel more comfortable opening up on him. Also your body has the strength it has depending on how you train it, there is no need to ever muscle your punches or kicks, relax & deliver with proper technique the power will still be there on impact. If you want to perfect your technique slow it down before you speed it up, break down your movement & body position along the way, do you feel off balance anywhere in your movements? Do your joints feel any strain? etc... Learn the concept of "unlocking/opening" your back, this alone will significantly improve your performance.

How was it for you to see them spar, saw anything they could’ve improved, anything you would’ve adopted and overall how was it to witness McGregor spar boxers especially that it was around the time when he was preparing to box Floyd.

had a sparring session a few months ago with this guy who rarely comes into the gym. He's got a few years under him and I'm still on my first. Instead of taking it light he lost his temper after i landed 7 and he landed none. He really went for me after that and because i was new i looked away and he pushed me into the corner of the ring and started basically going ham on my flank and stuck 3 in my balls. Nobody likes him, he isn't a good fighter and it put me off sparring for a bit but I'm glad i had the experience because i realise he didn't even hurt me. When he comes back when im healthy for sparring i'll make sure to take on your advice ;)

I have a problem in sparing and fights I'm good and doing what i learn best till i get strong punch to my face from my opponent and after that i lost my confidence and i fear my opponent and I can't even attack them because of that fear does anyone had this problem or how to fix that ?

When I spar with someone that is good I do great but I always struggle with someone who doesn’t know how to box.

    Hi Tony
I did some sparring with 2 mates and I broke 4 ribs in 2 sessions. Is this something that occurs now and then or are my ribs just weak? :p
