My Nexus 5 went into the boot loop today. I found your video and followed it exactly, and now MY PHONE WORKS AGAIN! Thank you so much for this guide. You are awesome for posting it. :)

I can confirm this process worked for me. and I just used regular glass cleaner and used my own exhaled breath (hard blowing) to clean the button module. thanks for the tips! and you're right. the hardest part is getting the back cover off the phone.

Fantastic tutorial! I didn't have much hope, but this saved my Nexus after it began to have problems with the power button (it wasn't stuck in a boot loop but turned on and off almost every time I turned screen on and off).
A few notes. Be careful with removing the back cover, the plastic pieces that snap it into place break easily. I also thought the plastic part of the power button was broken, mine didn't have anything to keep it positioned. And I didn't notice any difference after applying alcohol to the inner part of the power button.
Still, after putting it together again - it now works like a charm. Thank you for a great video!

And another rescued Nexus 5! Thanks for the tutorial! Greetings from germany!
I used "Kontakt WL" to clean the switch. Before cleaning I still heard the "click" from the switch but the symptoms where as described (bootloop). Now the Nexus 5 is fine again.
Attention, while reassembling I noticed, that the plastic power switch (not the micro switch) has a little hole which has to be placed on a small pin inside the case!

My power button started to behave freakishly 2 days ago and yesterday in the morning it switched off and since then I wasn't able to boot it anymore. I tried smashing the button against the edge of my table but to no avail. I've even put it in freezer for 15 mins as that might help but again no result. I came across your video and deciced to go for it but I was skeptical at first. I dismantled the phone, did all the cleaning and clicking as shown in the video but my device didn't boot up so I felt down in the dumps and dissapointed reassembled the device. I gave it one more shot and pressed the power button hoping for the best and yay, IT WORKED! I've never been so happy in my life. Basically what I'm trying to say is that if anyone has the problem of not booting up as you did in the video, try putting everything back together first and magic is about to happen. Thank you very much. Oh and btw, I used aftershave (containing alcohol) as cleaner because I don't have anything like that at home. :D

    • @WeekendAgendaTV
      @WeekendAgendaTV  8 років тому

+Filip Randjak Nice! The aftershave is a great idea!, although depending on the type it could be sticky and leave residue maybe? In any case it worked so it did the job. I personally never tried the hitting the phone thing because i didn't want to risk damaging something else in the process.

Right on! This worked great. No more boot loop. My Nexus 5X had the newer long form motherboard, but the principles remain the same. Remove outer cover. Remove screws and inner cover. Disconnect three connectors. Remove board. Clean and reinstall. Thanks again!

Thanks very much. It worked for me. I have been suffering with the problem of my Nexus 5 rebooting often, but always recovered itself. However, yesterday, it was not coming out of the reboot loop.
Your suggestion that power button is clogged and is causing the problem, proved to be right.
You video is a little quick to realise that there are two flat connectors on the top have to disconnected before being able to take out the motherboard board.

This worked for me! I'd seen other videos suggesting banging the phone, or replacing the switch. My switch didn't feel mechanically stuck, it clicked in and out. But phone was stuck in reboot loop. Taking it apart, cleaning with compressed air and then electrical contact cleaner seems to have fixed it. Thanks for the video!

Great money savings fix! Completed the procedure in 25 minutes on my daughter's Nexus 5 and it is back to normal. Used 91% Isopropyl alcohol which you can get at CVS/Walgreens and a $2 can of air duster. Much more economical than getting a new phone.

Thank you for a great explanatory video. When i had got the nexus 5 apart it was clear that my problem was not the switch but the plastic button in the case. There are 2 minute bit of plastic (acting as a spring) one was broken and jamming making the button stick. I removed the button, cut off the plastic bits and bingo the button now is free to move and not stick. I hope it lasts.

Thanks for the video +Weekend Agenda When I had this issue I looked on some forums and they helped me isolate the problem but having the video to watch made it so much easier to know I wasn't going to hurt anything. One thing I found though is that the external part of the button on my phone had a large build up of dust around it and this was also gumming up the action. For other viewers looking to solve this problem on their own phone I recommend cleaning this area as well, doing both these things quickly solved my problem. Thanks again.

Saved me from going into the LG service center and spending money on an out of warranty phone (checked some websites that read many of them spent $50-$120 for this simple fix at LG service centers round the world who informed that they had to replace the motherboard)

Thanks dude, this worked for me too, you are my nights hero as well. One little thing tho, on 2:15 you fast forward the unplugs of the remaining 3 thingies but you dont talk at all about them. At that point I was listening mostly while doing what u were telling so I almost missed those. My spider sense told me to check again and saw their positions but someone might try to get the mb off with those clipped in. Thanks for the vid, peace out

Fantastic video, made me able to get in and out of my phone no problem - but it didn't fix it unfortunately. The switch on the motherboard looks super wobbly, it doesnt go just up and down like the volume switches do. This this goes side to side and everything, you can move it so easily, so it's surprise my power button was so volatile and sensitive. I have no idea if this can be replaced or not, just gona see if I can get a temp fix til I can at least afford a new phone. Have to admit, I'm probably just going to let my lump hammer go to work and lower my stress levels

Great instructions!! Was really helpful. My issue was actually the black button on the outside. After I opened and checked the inner white button, I didn't notice any stickiness or dust, but it looked like a tiny piece of the black button had broken off on the inside so that when you press it, it doesn't pop back out all the way like it's supposed to and keeps pushing on the inner white button. It wasn't noticeable when the phone is intact but I could see it when I took everything apart. I ended up jamming a tiny piece of plastic under the black button on the edge/side that wasn't popping back out properly to force it to pop back out every time I press it, then replaced all the pieces back in and it seemed to have worked!

I did this and it was a temporary fix. Every couple of months it kept happening and worse each time. Finally, it wouldn't work at all so I did one last thing before giving up and buying a new phone AND IT WORKED!!! I simply opened up the phone, took a pair of tweezers and litterally ripped out the power button. Since then, I had been keeping my phone charged at 100% just in case I could never turn it off again but today it locked up on me and...wait for it...I inserted a piece of metal into the hole where the power button used to be and it made the connection. Yay! I have my phone back with no power button issues! I just stick the end of a pair of metal scissors in to turn it on and off.

Great video, it's very helpful. Minor note, though, the antenna cables are just that, they're aren't ribbon cables. Ribbon cable means a flat cable with multiple lead, the antenna cable are round cables with a single lead. Have a good one.

What worked for me was following this video, but not disconnecting the battery and sidewires. Just take the motherboard protective cover off and use one of those fine plastic-rubbery softpicks which the dentist keeps telling you to use for between your teeth (not the one with the metal wires and get the smallest ones for better reach). Once the protective cover is off you can see where the power button connects to a tiny white switch. Clean around it with the toothpick (or small brush--toothbrush could work) and make sure to press the power button and clean in there as well. You may also douse the toothpick in A/V cleaner or other cleaning product safe for the electronics/plastic. All the filth and sticky stuff is mostly around the button as it creeps in through the cracks around the power button. Give the rest of the phone a clean where necessary like this as well. Reassembled and worked again. Use the leftover softpicks to maintain good dental hygiene for clean breath and a happy dentist.

This video didn't work for me right away but got me started on the right track. So my phone over a period of 2 days went from a very unresponsive power button, to shutting off randomly, to not coming on at all. The only way I could get any life out of it was to charge it or plug it into my computer and it would get to the black google screen and then reboot and continue non stop. I first dabbed isopropyl on the power switch and gave it some work but still no difference. After watching some other videos some users soaked the button in isopropyl and really worked the button. Move it side to side, up and down, rotate it, drag it down to one side with your fingernail and release it hard. I started to notice it was sounding more like the other two buttons for the volume control. The winner was taking a pair of tweezer and placing one pincer on the button itself and the other on the back part of the switch and giving it a few really good squeezes. I was afraid I was going to break it but at this point the phone was useless anyways. Then all of a sudden it was clicking like it was new. I probably soaked it 3 times or so for about 30 seconds and worked the hell out of it. I put it back together for the 4th time and it works like new. Super stoaked. If this didn't work another user just popped the power button right off and the phone would turn on as soon as the battery was reconnected. They then used an app that could turn your phone on and off. That was going to be my last attempt as my phone is a couple years old now. Anyhow it works so I will go hopefully another year before something else goes on it. Long live the NEXUS 5 !!!
    Thanks for the help !!

Jon Wolski How is it? Every nexus I ever owned had annoying design flaw. So I'm afraid to buy a nexus.
G-Nex - Terrible battery charge times, Easily breakable USB charging port and bad antenna. I would have to reboot my phone sometimes because it wouldn't pick up the signal.
Nexus 7(2013) tablet - Bad Gyro Its not uncommon.there's also a hot fix for it on youtube . Wobbly USB port. Mine still works, but apparently its a common problem and people have to send it to fix it. Or replace the port themselves.
Nex 5 - The power button. The stupid fucking power button. Quite common.
So now, I'm sour on the whole nexus/google line.

    You sir, are awesome.
Worked for me but had to do it a few times. Finally my phone works again.
    Thank you.

Thanks a lot! I watched a lot of videos about how to fix it. But only this video helped me.
    From Germany :)

Thank you for the video. Here's hoping it fixed my random reboots and erroneous shutdown menu pop-ups. I feel awfully ham-handed after this. I managed to break three clips that hold the back plate on. It clipped back on with barely any noticeable movement, so I think I got lucky.

I would suggest for anyone trying to remove the back of the phone, you need to use a heat gun on certain spots. A blow dryer will compensate as well. The reason for this is that there is an adhesive keeping the back in place. If you damage the back part of the housing, depending on the area affected, you may have to replace it. Also, when using said heat gun/ blow dryer, do not over heat your phone or you'll fry the components inside and could possibly ruin the phone all around.

Worked for me,I used alcohol. It still gets stuck sometimes, but rarely. I recommend you to use volume buttons to wake up the phone(im on resurrection remix 9.0 and there is an option for this) and a lock screen app from google play.

Congratulations on your tutorial! You can tell when it is ( if indeed it is) to replace the button for a new one?

Thanks for the idea... this fix worked for me! I was worried I would have to replace the stupid button which would've been extremely difficult.

Thank you very much mate! You saved me several euros. :)
    tip for the others:
I was silly enough not to take away the sim and the sim holder before starting. nothing happened, but be sure you do it at the beginning!

Great Video! Tried pouring 95% isopropyl alcohol from pharmacy and clicked several times. Din't work. Tried again, except this time left battery disconnected for more than a hour. When i put it back, the looping went away. Not quite sure how long this fix will last!!

is this just a temp fix? If the power button is defective would the problem not come back?

+Michelangelo Frisoni the restarting on my phone wasn't consistent, it started happening slowly worse and worse every day until it came to a point of a constant boot loop, so i knew it was not a software problem. Power button was the first suspect on the list :P

Many thanks to share your knowledge. It is really appreciated. The video was really helpful, I was able to solve the issues with the power button. I was not aware that the front camera has to be disconnected before to get access to the power button. Because of that, I had some additional issues with my front camera. Fortunately with this an another video I was able to sort it out. The video worked for me.

Cheers for this. I just removed some of the dust and blew hard. I'd advise not using a screwdriver in case you damage the side of your case. I ended up using my nail :p
Seems to be working a lot better now.
