Just a heads up to anyone attempting this. Just after unplugging the connectors, try connecting them back again and seeing if your phone boots again. My Nexus 5X wasn't booting at all (not bootlooping, just nothing when I pressed the power/volume buttons, no matter how long). I replugged the battery and digitizer connector and my phone started booting again. You can do this quick test without reassembling the whole phone and maybe save yourself the extra work.

Worked for me as well. no re-heating.
The issue started after using a samsung charger. Same thing happen 2 years ago after using a non lg charger (sent it to support, came back "no change , works fine")

This method worked for me as well!! Didn't have a heat gun so I used a hairdryer for about 10mins. It came back to life after all other troubleshooting steps failed. Thank you for posting!!!

I was so nervous, putting parts of my phone in the oven... but HOLY SHIZBALLS it worked!!!
Phone had stopped responding, black screen, no response/no bootup/no charge symbol/no hope!!! I was seriously shopping for a new phone all evening, and decided what the hell, nothing to lose so let's toss the phone in the oven, shall we??
I followed Alexis's awesome step-by-step for taking apart my beloved nexus 5x, all the way down to the part where he was going to use the heat gun. At that point, I went and turned on my oven to preheat for 10 minutes at 300 degrees FAHRENHEIT, got out a cookie sheet, and put the mother board on the sheet, on top of a piece of parchment paper. After 10 minutes of preheat, I put the pan in, set my timer again, for only 6 minutes this time, and then paced nervously in the kitchen while I waited. As soon as the timer went off, I turned off the oven heat, and propped the oven door open. After a couple minutes more, I decided to completely open the door, leaving it laying open for about 10 while I stood there to make sure our furry family members didn't get too curious. I did not touch the board or pan during this. After that, I went back to having the door just propped open a bit, instead, and left it that way for the remainder.... over all, I let the board sit untouched for 1 full hour before moving it. I just couldn't take it anymore after that, and grabbed it. It felt cool to the touch, so I figured good enough. Followed the same procedure to put it all back together, and about CRAPPED myself when it powered up.
All in all, not the way I had planned on spending a Thursday night, but I TOTALLY feel like a tech guru now!
Thank you Alexis for the video, and to all the folks that commented with their ideas on using the oven!!!

not trying to jinx this, but i have done the rework of the solder using this method and it has been a week and my phone is still working. some quick pointers if you find this comment from the 314. Set up where you are going to let the motherboard cool down and do the heating there and DO NOT move the mother board PERIOD AT ALL EVER from heating to cooling!!!!! DONT MOVE WHAT IT IS ON, DONT TOUCH IT, DONT EVEN BREATHE ON IT. If this method permanently fixes this issue, then what your motherboard was experiencing is what is known as a dry socket on the eMMC chip soldering pins. A little liquid flux never hurt anything and can be wiped away afterwards, just dont use to much xD. Im just glad this video was up because I honestly would have never known where to look. Also you must take the heat shield off of the chip and you must take the mother board out of the phone to do this properly. Trust me!!!! You want to do this properly so you dont have to do it again.

Long enough to back up everything. Phone is still working a day after actually, but we won't risk using it much more.

My phone started freezing and rebooting, then reboot loops, starting maybe every 15 reboots, and over 1 hour period become a complete brick, unresponsive to anything.
Thanks to you, it's now back alive!!!! Huge props man. Heated that samsung chip 350°C for about 30-40 seconds with some flux

It runned like 5 hours and it is still operational. Many thanks without this tutorial I would have never been able to retreive my data !

Much as gracias amigo. Tu eres mi heroe hoy.
After trying various phones, I was ecstatic with my Nexus 4, until it ran out of memory. So getting free upgrade to 5X was just awesome. 3 weeks ago, it made some staticky sound. I tried to restart, it hung, I forced shutdown. It never came back up.
I watched this video 3 weeks ago and read various comments.
Today I followed the tear down instructions, turned oven to 150 centigrade, when it got to temperature set. I put the motherboard on backing tray and put it in the oven for 6 minutes.
When alarm rang, I turned off the oven and opened the door for slow cool down.
After 2 hours I reassembled the phone. Plugged it in and saw first sign of life. Blinking red light, followed by screen showing battery charging.
I turned on the phone, it showed battery was at zero.
1 hour later, battery is at 46%. I will post status for next few days (God willing).

Incredible! My 5x had no response. I was typing a text message and it froze. A few seconds later it went black and I could not bring it back.
I did the disassembly as suggested here. For me, I put the board on a piece of tin foil in the oven at 350 F for 8 minutes. Then I let it cool for an hour. Reassembled the phone. Had to charge it a little because it was completely dead. Hit the power button and was able to recover my data. We'll see how long it works but this was like magic!

All I can say is WOW! My boss gave me his daughter's phone to repair. I checked battery voltage, and charging circuit, etc - and eventually came to the conclusion it was probably the CPU reflow issue (which I only knew was a common issue due to this video). So I got my reflow station out and it now WORKS!!! Thank you so much!!! :) Great video!!!

Thank you, this actually worked! Used the oven at 180°C for 7 minutes and left it inside with the door open to cool (in order not to move it while cooling off). I didn't remove the metal covers on the MB as I was affraid I'd damage them.

This video just saved my nexus and lots of $!!!!! My 3 yr old phone died suddenly- fully charged but no response at all despite holding in power/volume buttons. After freezing it for a day it booted once then died again and after repeated attempts went completely dead. I took it apart exactly the way this video describes - only with a little comb and a screwdriver :( and made sure I disconnected the battery first and reconnected last. I tried using too small of a philips screwdriver and couldn't get the screws out and when I switched to a bit bigger one the screws came out fine. The heat shield is a bit tricky you need a really sharp edge to pop it up. I baked the motherboard at 175C for 7 min on a cookie sheet, then opened the oven door all the way to cool for an hour or more without touching it. Reassembled and now it works perfect. Best online experience ever

Ok guys. My honest comment. It worked for me. But I used oven 350F for 6minutes and 30 sec. I tried to avoid this and did whar some guys on comments suggested unpluging battery and etc. did not work for. And I DID THIS. And it did work! Thank you!

Thank you! This REALLY works - a dead four-year-old Nexus LG 5X is now working, at least enough to backup and so on. I used the oven at 150C for 6 minutes as suggested below. And the advice not to go near the motherboard until absolutely cool makes a heap of sense.

    • @nicksergeant3381

I put it on a tray inside the oven so I could remove it without touching it. The fix was looking like not being permanent so it got replaced but it was usable during swap over.

Like a few others here, I was a bit sceptical about whether this was going to work or not ! As the phone was dead I thought I have nothing to lose ! After reading a few other comments and blogs, I went for the oven fresh treatment. So 180°C (300F) for 7.5 minutes followed by a 1 hour cool down. Reassembled, rebooted and now have a working phone. The pet charity I am giving the phone to are going to be very happy. Thanks everyone who contributed to this guys vid

    • @MisterB70
      @MisterB70 5 років тому

@@abdulwahidahmed4397 Yes the Oven. I know very odd but it worked. I used the no fan option and waited until it was at temperature, placed the motherboard on a simple baking tray. Just be very careful when removing from the oven and just allow it to cool down for at least an hour

Thanks for a great tutorial on how to get the Nexus 5X back from the dead. Tried it with a heatgun, first with Lineage OS. It didn't bite, it booted up but couldn't get past the logo. Since I could get into both fastboot mode and recovery (after following your steps) I tried installing stock rom from scratch. The result? It's alive at the moment and hopefully gives me more joy as it has in the past. Once again thanks!

Then I bring my phone to unofficial service, but after a day they gave up and then give my phone back. I search in youtube how to fix it, then I found this video, I do it by myself, then VOILA!! Awesome... it fixed my Nexus 5X that wouldn't reliably turn on or even go to safe mode, red light sometimes but mostly dead. I put in oven 6 min at 300F, removing shields first - AND MAKING SURE TO NOT MOVE IT and open door to completely cool off - which I've done on other electronic parts (Acura Blue tooth has similar solder issue and first item it worked for a year, second time about 2 months, 3rd time I moved while hot and a chip fell off never to go back (good luck aligning those! Didn't realized the 5X had similar issues! I had tried clear cache, reverting to standard rom, wipe clean, but turns out to be a hardware issue and would have never guess without this video. Time will tell how long it will last...

The first time I heated it a bit to short I guess (about 25 seconds, distance about 15 cm) I was worried I would damage the chip as I had no lower setting than 350 degree Celsius. Second time around I was less worried as I was getting ready to buy a new phone so I did 1m30 at about 12-15cm... and it works! Had to do this twice but seems to be working now after 2nd attempt! The first time I was a little conservative with the heat gun and stay around 3" away from the circuit board. The bootloop and unresponsive behavior continued after that attempt. The 2nd attempt I moved in closer around 1" away from the circuit board and also went for 2 minutes. I was more aggressive with the samsung chip the 2nd time often holding the heat gun over it for 5 seconds before moving around the rest of the board. Thanks Alexis!! Great video! You saved me!!

I can't believe it worked. But it did!
My Nexus 5x just died on me yesyterday, while browsing. Froze, not response, screen went black. No response, nothing. At rare occasions, it buzzed and showed "Google" in white, and nothing more, then went blank after 10 seconds. Most of the time, it was nothing nothing nothing, regardless of holding the power button and volume down (or up) for more than 30 seconds.
I followed this video, tried just disconnecting everything and re-connecting... still the same problem.
I wiggled out the mother board, put it into the oven on 170-180 degrees for 7 minutes on a piece of oven paper, let it cool for 30 minutes, put everything back on AND THE HEAVENLY THING BOOTED! My photos are saved!
(We did have a 3 months old backup, but it was important 3 months! Not to mention my contacts!
Note to self: be EXTRA careful to back up stuff from devices that do not have a removable memory and/or are encrypted.
    Thanks a ton!

Thanks for the helpful video. I tried this without a heat gun and put the motherboard in the oven for 4 minutes at 150 C. It worked though the phone was a bit glitchy afterwards (i.e. apps crashing), maybe due to memory almost being full. Trying to free up space on my phone now and will see how long it lasts; it's only been a few hours so far. Assuming it won't be long but at least I was able to transfer my important files. Thanks again.

A+ I had a Nexus 5x from Project Fi and out of warranty. Holding the power button, and putting it on the charger overnight didn't do anything (no LED lights, no boot). Did this reflow for the given 1.5mins, and it boots now! I have tried reflowing other things with limited luck, glad this one worked. The Nexus 5x is so easy to open up and user fixable.

Muchas gracias! Holy shit it worked! Well on second attempt that is; I guess I went a little too careful on the first round, but no regrets. Disassembled it just like in the video, and used my HEAT GUN (max 2000W but lower setting, maybe 550W) on setting for 350deg C, and 250l/min. On second round that I had the motherboard out, I focused a lot on the Samsung chip but still wiggled the gun a little back and forth, maybe 10-15cm from it, for 90s. Left it to cool for 30min, before I reassembled it. Then it just started right up, no problem. Wonderful. Backing everything up...
Note: I'm using an ESD mat with wristband for disassembly, and then have the motherboard on a wooden cutting board for the heat treatment.

    Hi there!
Thank you very much for your help. I experienced the same issue with my Nexus 5X and I did exactly what is shown on video, except the fact that I used the hair dryer. It took 3 times heating chip before it came back again. The 2 first times, I was not heating enough, as I spent only the exact 1m30s : definitely, the hair dryer is too different from heatgun!
    Thanks again!

OMG this worked...my nexus 5x had been dead for more than 6 months (we gave up since it was past warranty) and i just tried this fix on a whim. can't believe it worked. i used a hair dryer on high over the chip instead of a heat gun, about an inch away for a minute, moving around. then i bundled a little piece of aluminum foil between the chip and metal cover like other ppl mentioned and it's working. i'll update if the phone dies again...

But i was not waiting 1h..i just wanted to see if it booted at all and it did! and then it died, so i am doing it again and now i'm going to wait for 1h and not hesitate. But it works, i even used a hair dryer 10 min for 2.5cm above the motherboard and it worked the first time, and was super easy to disassembly. Thanks for the tip

It worked for half a day for me. It's back to being dead. The Samsung chip he identified to heat up is the RAM chip, the chip next smallest next to it (THG...)is the EMMC storage chip, and the smaller chip surrounded by large capacitors is the Power IC chip, that's one that I ordered and I hope it takes care of the problem when I replace it.
