Fun fact: Shrek the Third has an Easter Egg where you can smash a crate in one of the chapters. That crate actually contains Skipper, from DreamWorks’ other golden child, Madagascar.
I am a huge Conan fan. It's inspired me in my own writing. The game doesn't do Conan justice he's a pretty deep character with tons of media that explores his character. I recommend you read Solomon Kane's comic run for Conan. Red Sonja is also from Conan and she is one of the best female characters in fiction imo! Read her run by Gail Simone!
One thing i know about Conan and the Hyborian age is that it is the birth of sword and sorcery, and Conan is a lot more introspective, the book itself begins with him already as a king and goes to his past adventures, two curiosities: Conan actually leaves by himself instead of being turned a slave like in the movie(and the movie portrays very well the complexity of the world created by Robert, and i can understand why the change of the beginning), and in some countries outside of the US Conan is public domain, even so that there's french comics of him, they even had problems to bring it to the US having to change the title and so on, but came quite easy to my country. the makers of the game probably just tough Conan was just a power fantasy story with a over the top barbarian with no conscience.
It's tricky describing the Conan series' tone. On some level, all the stories (going back to the original Robert E. Howard novels and novellas) are masculine power fantasies about a brawny barbarian dude who kicks ass and slays mad poon (though the movies made him signficantly less nuanced), but I feel even the most die-hard Conan fan would feel insulted at this game's presentation of its subject matter. The artistic integrity you describe God of War as having is very much present in the original books (and even the first movie to an extent), but this game seems to be playing into the "common knowledge" image of Conan as being pulp-fiction schlock.
13:00 Zeus did create humans in mythology, in fact he created multiple generations of humans that he kept destroying because they were flawed until he made the final one ( us ). Prometheus really just taught us how to make and use fire according to ancient Greeks
This literally could be a series that can go on forever. GoW changed the game when it came out. There's so many clones. Even MKA had Konquest, which was literally Diet GoW, and that was PEAK PS2 MK. Keep up the great work, TBP. Most of us who bought every PS2 game on sale is reliving the golden years.
There's the following editions I could see; Spin-Off Edition: Crash of the Titans, Golden Axe: Beast Rider Horror Edition: Splatterhouse, Ninja Blade, Bloodforge, The Dishwasher, Alice Madness Returns Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks is unlikely, as that came out way too soon and was in development before God of War. Though considering that there aren't enough God of War knockoffs that are spinoffs, I think Golden Axe would be on a "Bottom of the Barrel" Edition with Garshasp and Hero of Sparta.
The Conan game that came out a long while back on original XBox and PC had a better game over/continue screen and mechanic. If you died out of combat in any way you get a message of how you're not worthy of Crom and you get a hard game over. If you fall to enemies you get taken to the afterlife and have to fight some powerful enemies in Crom's arena. If you beat them then Crom resurrects you on the spot, but if you die then you get a borderline roasting from Crom for how much you suck. It's so hardcore, and 100% Conan.
Bacon commander I feel like I need to tell you this. When you reached Conan you got to me, I hopped off. I will probably finish the video later as I love all your work and have never really had problems with your takes before. Even the ones I disagree with were just water under the bridge, but the stuff about stigma and the game being for juvenile boys got me. I agree that it shouldn't be all video games, but it never was exclusively that. As a Conan fan I'll give you my take on Conan, He is the Juvenile Male Power Fantasy made flesh. He is an ultra buff guy who saves beautiful women and slays monsters with an oversized sword. That is THE juvenile fantasy and while I agree it might not appeal to anybody outside that group it really doesn't need to. Not every game is made for every person nor every painting for every set of eyes. While I agree the game could be a bit gratuitous I wouldn't say it's anymore than God of War. Its like sword and sandals Duke Nukem, asking it to be different is like asking Life is Strange to cater to the teen boy sensibilities. Both games deserve to exist, and neither game is required to cater to the others fans. Sorry for the long comment Bacon Commander, I look forward eagerly to your next video
@@Thefufflylord That is a fair thing to bring up, Conan has had plenty of depth across his iterations. I would generally say that Conan. Is at his best written in Howard's pulps. What I'm specifically referring to is the Conan of this game whose general demeanor and characterization draws from the Arnold movie and comics run where the action takes the driver seat. We have been blessed with nearly a century of Conan and there are many sides to the barbarian, I'm happy you are so passionate and well versed in the lore.
@@Thefufflylord That is true, I would love to see something like a long form RPG for Conan. A huge game with the time to pull from the entire rich history and give us everything that makes Conan such an instantly recognizable and beloved character. I am happy I got to talk to such a passionate fellow fan today, thank you for taking the time.
When I was little I played Clash of the Titans and my mind was probably influenced by the fact that I was a child but I liked it I remember it being repetitive and a bit boring in some parts but, as you said in the video, the gameplay was good and when I saw you doing final moves on enemies I felt again the pure satisfaction I felt as a kid when doing them
While I understand the rip off is more in the gameplay style, I can’t help but envision them being also in the style of maturity. With Po running around killing the furious 5, using the Tiger’s head as a lantern etc
Loved the Conan section, you're 100% right about titillation and gratuity in video games; unless it serves a purpose, it just feels like it's pandering to the lowest common denominator. Incidentally, Conan has a LONG history in media; the series started in pulp magazines back in, like, the 1930s, and it has continued on in comics and, rarely, film and TV ever since. So there's plenty of ways for someone to get into it if they're just, for example, looking for a fantasy comics series. I love the old movies with Arnold, but I'd hardly say I'm a fan outside of those two. They're fun, but in this day and age we're a bit spoiled for fantasy adventure. I'm the kind of guy who'd rather play D&D and come up with my own adventures.
That Chaos Blast segment made me wonder what would happen if TBP reviewed the Shadow the Hedgehog game. Afaik it's not really ripping off any game in particular (unless if you look at it with blurry glasses and spot a Devil May Cry thing in there), but it's certainly a game for the ages with it's perfect mechanics
Conan The Barbarian does indeed have a loyal following, and if i may say so myself, God Of War franchise definitely has some inspiration from Conan. The shot of Kratos taking his throne in GOW1 and Valhalla is almost a shot for shot recreation of King Conan. A Conan and Kratos crossover would be a dream come true.
Curiously the other contender for worst adaptation of all time that is dragonball evolution (although i still think the live action fist of the north star beats both in therms of how horrible it is) had a tie in game thats surprisingly good. And that is because its literally a reskin of the original budokai games, but with way less content in pretty much every way. The only thing that the game misses is having goku (which i still think the writers accidentally based most of his characterization on buu saga gohan by some freak accident) do that dumbass 'head slide' thing on top of yamcha's car.
A game I'd love to see you cover is Drakengard on the PS2. It's a somewhat troubled game that has a very unique tone, a repetitive but still fun in a grindy way gameplay loop, and a story that only gets weirder and weirder as it goes.
38:53 Never wanted gaming to be "taken seriously." I wanted it to stay a niche hobby that demanded the developers and publishers actually release quality titles without any BS the "normal crowd" is addicted to and completely okay with (season passes, Day 1 dlc, gigantic Day 1 patches, always online, live service) Gaming being taken seriously and more mainstream is exactly why the industry has become so terrible. 6 or 7 year dev cycles, 300million dollar budgets, download sizes well over 150gigs, the people who used to make fun of you for playing games now directly being in charge of them. Thousands of people on a project at a time. So much work outsourced because the people being hired in-studio have no actual talent for what needs to be done. And the end-result is a AAA movie game for $70 bucks. It's a Hellscape.
I remember the Conan video game. It was pretty decent. My older cousin and myself beat it. As for the fans. I think you might not see them much because they are older, and not online much, a lot of my older cousins, uncles, and father. All love Conan. Even some my age, who are just not online much.
Okay, bit of a tirade but I wanted to get this off my chest. That summary regarding Conan and gaming in the mid-to-late 2000's felt very misguided and, dare I paraphrase, asinine. To me, it felt like a rant regarding the current gaming discourse and how much gaming had gotten "better" by eschewing the stuff you dislike. Personally, I hate the current trends of modern games and I prefer the older aspects of games, juvenile as some of it can be. Yeah, not all of it is perfect, but at least I can have fun with some of it.
I'm also a fan of Robert E. Howard's Conan and Hyboria. One might say it could even be an inspiration for God Of War since Conan lives in a world of slavery and cruelty and defeats monsters and sorcerors through, to qoute John Wick, "sheer fucking will". With only his steel weapon, brawn and determination. A product of Friedrich Nietzsche, you could say. I'm pretty sure it's been said to inspire the Berserk manga (RIP). As for women being objectified .. it's commonly displayed in various media iterations of Conan. Like the violence, it would seem out of place for it to me omitted. You could sum it up woth the, "Conan, what is best in life" qoute from the movie
@38:00 For Conan, nudity and meaningless titilation is very much on point. If you want a modern medium that continues that tradition look at Heavy Metal magazine.
Conan isn’t so much popular as it is respected like the only 2 things related to Conan that are genuinely popular are the 1st Arnold movie and the marvel comics which the game is sorta based on but it is respected as it’s a fantasy series that predates lord of the rings

If I might leave a request/ bring the attention for the next part: 2010's Splatterhouse Really has the knockoff vibe (weak/ strong attacks, rage mode, QTEs) Sadly it had an awful development cycle, (small variety of enemies, and performance issues shows that the budget was not that great). However you can see the developers passion showing through everywhere it can, from callbacks, to "weapons", to an extensive journal following the events prior to the game. 2 tips tho: buy the "I-frames roll" ASAP, and have full attention on jumps, as it's an insta-kill and 40-60 seconds reload time 😢
Dude, Kamiya fanboys really think DMC was the first hack and slash game to ever exist, it is stupidly obvious these days that GOW's combat is a mix of Onimusha and Ninja Gaiden, everyone can play those games right now on modern platforms and see for themselves, but try to convince the DMC playerbase to try other games from that era. And no DMC wasn't the first hack and slash, it was inspired by Onimusha and Strider, there's a plethora of 2D and 3D hack and slash games that preceded DMC like Berserk, Nightmare Creatures, Dynasty Warriors 2 and so on
I may have come late to the party, but I don't think you covered Spartan: Total Warrior, GoW knock off made by Creative Assembly - guys responsible for Total War series. It's literally a game about a spartan where last boss is Ares. You CANT get more knock offy than that.
Spartan: Total Warrior was in development before God of War even came out. Plus, the gameplay is fundamentally more Dynasty Warriors than either Devil May Cry/God of War.

Conan was the first one to do that the only diference Robert e Howard writting was beautyfull, and portray Conan as smart men whitout being a scholar and brutal warrior whitout being a total savage
The first action héroe
In the first fantasy World ever created
Fun fact: Shrek left hand is named “Equal” and his right hand is named “Rights”
Fun fact: Shrek the Third has an Easter Egg where you can smash a crate in one of the chapters. That crate actually contains Skipper, from DreamWorks’ other golden child, Madagascar.
As someone that knows what a Chaos Blast is and what it's from that's pretty funny.
Gail Simone is one of my favorite writers
1:03:28 I know it's not what you said but screaming "ennui!" like you were kevin sorbo gave me a giggle.
I guess I am a Conan fan, I think the first Schwarzenegger movie is fantastic.
There is nothing wrong with that film. Its a masterpiece.
When you said "it won't be the last video of this series" I was filled with relief. Keep it up ✌️
It's tricky describing the Conan series' tone.
Great work dude, I'm so excited for more videos from your channel
13:00 Zeus did create humans in mythology, in fact he created multiple generations of humans that he kept destroying because they were flawed until he made the final one ( us ). Prometheus really just taught us how to make and use fire according to ancient Greeks
Yes, love Conan. He has a bigger presence in the comic book scene as well as the original books, which are amazing.
Conan is pretty great
This literally could be a series that can go on forever. GoW changed the game when it came out. There's so many clones. Even MKA had Konquest, which was literally Diet GoW, and that was PEAK PS2 MK. Keep up the great work, TBP. Most of us who bought every PS2 game on sale is reliving the golden years.
I mean I think shaolin monks was made by the same guys who ended up making the first gow game. Correct me if I'm wrong
There's the following editions I could see;
Spin-Off Edition: Crash of the Titans, Golden Axe: Beast Rider
Horror Edition: Splatterhouse, Ninja Blade, Bloodforge, The Dishwasher, Alice Madness Returns
Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks is unlikely, as that came out way too soon and was in development before God of War. Though considering that there aren't enough God of War knockoffs that are spinoffs, I think Golden Axe would be on a "Bottom of the Barrel" Edition with Garshasp and Hero of Sparta.
@@neliaironwood7573I mean could be but you never know
Funny enough i still have the clash of the titans game with me for the PS3 and did finish it.
😂 Man time flies.
Think "Crom laughs at you" would have been a better death screen.
That would be pretty cool 😄
Eating bacon while watching TBP
I am eatin chili doooogs
When I was little I played Clash of the Titans and my mind was probably influenced by the fact that I was a child but I liked it
I remember it being repetitive and a bit boring in some parts but, as you said in the video, the gameplay was good and when I saw you doing final moves on enemies I felt again the pure satisfaction I felt as a kid when doing them
happy to see more of your content
Hey TBP read the Conan books first; before playing the games because many of them are nothing like the real Conan character.
So basically, there’s more to Conan then big muscleman and swords
While I understand the rip off is more in the gameplay style, I can’t help but envision them being also in the style of maturity. With Po running around killing the furious 5, using the Tiger’s head as a lantern etc
That would be hilarious indeed
Mantis’ Rage
Tigress Head
Viper’s Bolts
Army of Monkey
Wings of Crane
I disagree it's just a hobby you gotta chill
That Chaos Blast segment made me wonder what would happen if TBP reviewed the Shadow the Hedgehog game. Afaik it's not really ripping off any game in particular (unless if you look at it with blurry glasses and spot a Devil May Cry thing in there), but it's certainly a game for the ages with it's perfect mechanics
Beowulf is the rare movie that looks like it could be cutscenes for its own tie-in game.
Yeah
Hopefully you get around playing the Force Unleashed games. If not for being the best GOW style game then at least to restore some of your sanity.
My guess is that the blue dragon boss is made of leftover assets from Amaze’s Eragon games.
46:00 I feel like those dual (glowing) sword should have been the default weapons.
Conan was a good memory for me. I remember playing through it when I was 17 and blasting Dethklok while I was doing it. Good times.
Conan is super popular
I’m glad to get validation years later that yet another clash of the titans project was much better in concept than in reality
You should do a list of Star Wars Battlefront knockoffs in the future as there are so many clones around the time Battlefront 2 debut.
I remember the Shrek 2 game being good, (the ps2 version anways, that's the version I played), it's too bad the Shrek 3 game seems so bad.
As for women being objectified
.. it's commonly displayed in various media iterations of Conan.
34:41 On top of those examples, he’s also on slot machines, too. I know this because I work at a casino as a security guard and occasionally notice it when I’m patrolling the casino floor.
Star Wars The Force Unleashed was a decent "God Of War Clone". I never played the second game, though I mainly heard bad things about it so... guess I didn't really miss out haha.
If I might leave a request/ bring the attention for the next part:
2010's Splatterhouse
Really has the knockoff vibe (weak/ strong attacks, rage mode, QTEs)
Sadly it had an awful development cycle, (small variety of enemies, and performance issues shows that the budget was not that great).
However you can see the developers passion showing through everywhere it can, from callbacks, to "weapons", to an extensive journal following the events prior to the game.
2 tips tho: buy the "I-frames roll" ASAP, and have full attention on jumps, as it's an insta-kill and 40-60 seconds reload time 😢
They blue-ballsed ya on the blue balls in that shrek game
Dude, Kamiya fanboys really think DMC was the first hack and slash game to ever exist, it is stupidly obvious these days that GOW's combat is a mix of Onimusha and Ninja Gaiden, everyone can play those games right now on modern platforms and see for themselves, but try to convince the DMC playerbase to try other games from that era.
And no DMC wasn't the first hack and slash, it was inspired by Onimusha and Strider, there's a plethora of 2D and 3D hack and slash games that preceded DMC like Berserk, Nightmare Creatures, Dynasty Warriors 2 and so on
Connan is a pulp fiction icon he inspired parts of dnd and many other barbarian characters. This game is inspired by some of his short stories.
38:59 That’s something they actually took over for God of War Ascension
I may have come late to the party, but I don't think you covered Spartan: Total Warrior, GoW knock off made by Creative Assembly - guys responsible for Total War series. It's literally a game about a spartan where last boss is Ares. You CANT get more knock offy than that.
Spartan: Total Warrior was in development before God of War even came out. Plus, the gameplay is fundamentally more Dynasty Warriors than either Devil May Cry/God of War.
One suggestion for the God of War knockoff collection would be Ghost Rider... on GBA. Yeah they somehow managed to make the closest example to how a God of War game would play on Game Boy Advance
44:58 how Issac Clark deals with enemy’s lol
I love these knockoff collections. Could we get an XCOM knockoff collection next?
Another goated upload by TBP 🐐
I grew up playing lots of ps2 games, Shrek the third is one of em. Of course I enjoyed it back then, but replaying it on my psp (it's also on psp) ... not so much. A nostalgia trip for me though.
Speaking of Shrek 2, the game tie-in is one of the best movie tie-in games ever.
Surely I can't be the only one who LIKES the Shrek 3 game!
Not just you. My favourite part are the alternate suits since they're based on various aspects of the movies like the Knight suit that's obviously from the later half of the first film where he rescues Fiona
Lmao thank you for including shrek the third... that was my childhood until i spilt soda on my PS2 as a kid lol
I have warch exactly 0 hours and 20 some minutes of shrek
Off topic but if you get the chance listen to the soundtrack to Beowulf. Especially the main theme, it’s epic.
I never had a PlayStation growing up. I've always had a wii and I actually played Avatar. The last airbender, the game and I thought it was a very good game. But now I have A PlayStation 5, so I am a PlayStation person. Now and for you ask yes, I've had a PlayStation.Three and a playstation four I didn't skip straight to a five
You should try War of The Monsters
I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned, but there’s also an Xbox 360 version of the KFP game. Don’t know how much that would change your opinion on it, but less pain is a plus.
Could you make a video about all God of War crossovers and pop culture references, both in the series itself and in other media?
Man i remember when it was the early 2000s and shrek the movie just released and McDonald's had the shrek happy meal toys
Im just here to say those were simple times lol
Beowulf is a good movie
Didn’t knew there was a game
Me: Oh man, I can't wait for you to get to Ben 10: Protecter of Earth after this
Last Airbender Segment: Are you sure about that?
Am i the only one offended about him searchin the name for the furious five? Ya? Just me? I'm a weirdo
Great video man!
Just realized that every game in this video is in the thumbnail. No games that are not in the thumbnail. One extra game instead of 5 for this fourth installment.
Failed Franchise Edition: X Blades
Superhero: Spiderman Friend or Foe
The Shrek 3 the game dragon fight its from a deleted scene in the Shrek 3 movie.
3:11 i started watching this video to see god of war-like games and got jumpscared by "modder puts shrek in the first medieval stage of crash 3"... i know this was the developer of the GOOD crash ds game but they didn't need to make their crash stuff THAT obvious
I’m a fan of the Conan universe because it’s based on Norse mythology to a loose extent
It is? Honestly, it doesn’t seem like it.
@@MultiBoxingKid the books are set in a forgotten age of the word, there is a land called Asgard where humans called Asir and Vanir live. In the Conan universe much of modern myth is actually half remembered history from this forgotten age
the shrek game looks more like a DMC2 clone, which says a lot
