Worth noting that Salvatore Leone ended up undone by the paranoia that CJ sewed. CJ betrays him and loses him an insane amount of money, so in LCS he pulls a gun on his right hand man Tony (though luckily he doesn't kill him), and in GTA3 he turns on Claude despite his unwavering loyalty simply because of what Maria (a woman he's no longer in love with) tells him. He became a man who would turn on even the most loyal and trustworthy in his ranks all because of Carl, and I think that's a wild trajectory for his character.
@@wholesome1844crucifier He doesn't trust new and rising members in his crime family. One of the first things CJ tells him about is how he did jobs for Sal's son back in Liberty City. "And even though I've gone over for all the big relevant characters there's still far too many minor references and cameos for me to go over" Case in point. In Vice City, the talk show 'VCPR' had a character who was a nudist. He later appeared in GTA III.

GTA uses mafia terms properly most of the times, so they wouldn't all of suddenly be incorrectly describing CJ as a 'Made Man' in the context of the Italian Mafia.
I remember getting mind blown at how major characters in gta 3 and vice city get mentioned in san andreas, it's like all three games with their own time-line are connected, as for vcs I think rockstar probably didn't really think of vic as a major character in vice city and it was before they came up with the idea to create vcs
Will say one thing I have always found to be interesting is that GTA3 was the only one of the 3D Universe era to be set at the year the game was released so it's set during 2001. This of course is interesting as all the other games are set during time peroids instead. You get Vice City and stories in the 80's, San Andreas during the early 90's and Liberty City Stories in 1998. So this of course means GTA3 is set the furthest in the timeline of the shared 3D universe despite having been the first to come out with of course Vice City Stories being the last 3D Universe game to come out yet being set the earliest in the timeline being set in 1984.. A part of me does wonder what Tommy Verceti and Cj are doing during the events of 3 in 2001
One of the major arcs of the series is the downfall of the Forelli Crime Family. Vic Vance kills Forelli hitmen Former Forelli thug Tommy Vercetti starts an organization hostile to them in Vice City and kills their boss and numerous men. CJ kills the new Forelli boss and many more of their men, and steals money from them in a casino heist. Toni Cipriani decimates them and even destroys the neighborhood they're based out of. By the time of Claude's story, they're the "Forelli Brothers" and what's left of them get killed by another violent antihero.
While it is interesting to see how all of these characters are connected, it really just kind of leaves you feeling unsatisfied a lot of the time, especially with the characters whose canonical final appearance is in GTA 3, where they not only don’t resemble the characters later games would portray them as, but in a few cases, like with Donald Love, he doesn’t even get a proper sendoff, he just leaves a note saying “goodbye”, and that’s it. It’s such an anti-climax for a cannibal we’ve seen grow from the silent yes man of another politician, to a man on top of his own empire.
@@elchomper.1063 Technically the farthest point in the timeline is GTA2, as that game takes place in a cyberpunk dystopia, and Claude is the main character there. Edit: Okay, so this was written before I even started the video and didn't realize that GTA 1 or 2 weren't talked about, which is weird because both of those games are canon to the PS2 series. I remember Claude being one of GTA1's playable characters and he's the main character of 2 where he's doing what he does best: being a chaotic neutral mercenary working for the highest bidder. Claude Speed for all intents and purposes is GTA's OG protagonist and a part of me wishes he was used more, mostly because I personally love the trope "the almighty janitor".

Not going to lie I was hoping Gta 4 was going to explain questions that they never resolved but they rebooted the franchise and started the HD universe even tho I love Niko and the 2 expansions (TLAD & BOGT) I would have liked them to have tied into the 3D universe and have them explain what happened to the Leone Family, did the Triad take over portland, who fired the gun in the end credits, are Claude and Maria still alive if so did they hook up or did Claude kill Maria for causing him all the trouble with the Leone family and the Cartel, fate of the other gangs, and lastly wtf happened to Donald Love
Also in LCS, it explains why Asuka had access to Claude's Fort Stanton safehouse. As in LCS it is Yakusa property as it's where Kazuki lived until Toni kills him and Asuka is part of the Yakusa. (Also Kazuki is Kenji and Asuka's older brothers but he is killed which explains why Kenji takes over.)
Tbh, the 3D GTA era is among the best gaming universes in existence. It even includes Bully and Manhunt (Carcer City is also mentioned in the HD Universe). The only thing that rather bothers me is the retconning of Phil's military service. In III, Ray Machowski directly states him and Phil served in the Army together in Nicaragua, making them battle buddies. In Vice City, Phil is made out to be an intoxicated, gun fanatic who blew his own arm off. If Rockstar left this backstory intact, I believe Phil and Victor Vance would've had a stronger bond (as both are former soldiers) and Phil would be much more respected in comparison to other characters in the series. Another thing I wonder about is why didn't Salvatore mention Tommy in LCS? Tommy was the catalyst of the downfall of the Forellis and he was the Harwood Butcher (who's to say Tommy didn't want to expand the Vercetti Family to Liberty City?) The only time Tommy is mentioned by name and by deed, outside of Vice City, is in San Andreas
It just hit me after I saw the gta 6 trailer how Catalina & Claude are kind of similar to the characters in GTA 6. Not by how they look but kind of the same Bonnie & Clyde idea.
I mean it's less of an anti-climax if you played 3 first, because then you'd be viewing the characters through "Oh they're fleshing out these characters from GTA III" lens rather than "Well that was an underwhelming ending for that character" So playing GTA III first makes the most sense narratively and mechanically since it's much more simple than its successors.
@@RetroRulzMyTown What aftermath? Nearly every major gang leader or character in the series has been killed off in GTA3, or by the time of GTA3. Loved the GTA PS2 universe. Phil Cassidy was my favorite. I loved tracking the character’s histories and seeing how they changed so drastically. They turned the evolution of their technology and storytelling into a strength, where characters becoming less nuanced over time is then made a deliberate story choice by setting up their downfalls over time. Like Vic going from principled to a drug mule that gets gunned down immediately or the Forellis going from a legitimate threat to a spec on Liberty’s criminal underworld The recent Hitman trilogy did something very similar for me, that I hadnt felt since the 3D GTA universe. I remember exploring the ICA training level of the first game and hearing talk of the legendary Spy Janus, in a Sapienza biolab a scientist mentioning his brother being taken hostage by the modern day pirate The Maelstrom or Andrea Martinez appearing physically in the Paris map on behalf of the Delgado cartel, which in itself ties back to the PS2 Hitman games. Then in the second game I loved Martinez, Delgado, Janus and The Maelstrom becoming targets The third game definitely stepped down a little from that, what was amazing about the second game was each level was foreshadowed in the first. Reynard in level one was referenced in level four of the first, the Miami level has you taking on the corporation that provided medical equipment in the first game’s Hokkaido, etc. Whereas part three starts with that, the first two levels have you killing targets that appeared in cutscenes in part two, only two more characters (technically three if you count DLC) were set up in the first two games as targets. Tho i do love Don Yates’ backstory, he runs the law firm Morgan, Yates and Kohn so you killing his fellow attorney Ken Morgan makes him have a grudge against you. Heck Ken Morgan in the first game mentions his dog Pickles if you hold him at gunpoint, and The Yates’ adopted the thing according to dialogue! (He got run over by a grape harvester tho RIP Pickles)
"Stealing cars and killing hookers" that's exactly how a friend sold me Vice City when I wasn't even 10 years old 😂 funny how we change, since nowadays, in my 29 years old, I'm more interested in the story and characters than the mayhem I'm allowed to create in the city; making it the main reason why I love GTA IV and its protagonist Niko Bellic so much (Despite GTA Vice City still being my favorite in the franchise)
I've been replaying the 3D era these last few months (GTA 6 hype and all that), so I've been remembering all these connections, and then you make this vid, feels like you went into my mind, even mentioning the Toni/CJ theory (which I actually believe in). Great content, man P.S. I know you kept only to the big physical appearances in the games, but I think a few radio station cases could be mentioned as well: - Reni's (physical) appearance in VCS, and then being a DJ in LCS - Lazlow going from station intern to DJ to hosting 2 talk shows (as well as crossing over to the HD era) - Fernando Martinez going from reporter to DJ to talk show hijacker to running an affair program (and also crossing over to the HD era)
It's crazy that I still get exactly the same feeling that I got when these games were released. Motorbikes still seem new to me. Nostalgia is like a drug
it is not 100% sure that Diaz actually set up the ambush in the beginning of vice city. If you look at "An old friend" cutscene where Tommy calls Sonny after the deal went wrong, you can see Sonny has the table full of coke and money. Where does it took that coke from if the idea was that he sends tommy in the south to get involved in the business? It really makes more sense to Sonny setting up the ambush as he wanted to get rid of Tommy, than for Diaz that already had a business and money, had good relationships with the Vance and would have been bad in the long term to make more enemies
with stuff like rick and morty, 4-6 different call of duty timelines, and god knows how many batman reboots, it puzzles me why people cant seem to grasp that the GTA games are not all part of the same timeline or universe. III, VC, LCS, VCS, and I think GTA Advance are apart of one, IV, IV' TBOGT and TLAD, Chinatown Wars, V, and VI are apart of another. and Im not sure if they are connected, but GTA and GTA2 are also not part of the first two timelines I mentioned.
I think Rockstar learned not to do any more of those exclusivity deals, because while the Stories games are arguably still to this day some of the best in PSP's catalogue, being stuck only to Playstation consoles kind of killed their sales prospects(had they also been released for other consoles and PC, their sales figures would have been closer to III and VC). On another note, between San Andreas final months of production and LCS release, EA bought Criterion and their engine Renderware which had been the base of 3d era GTA, basically blocking the entire industry from using it and probably why the stories have slightly different physics from the other games. A SA Stories would have to be released before the HD universe began, only a year or maybe 2 after VCS, but by then Rockstar were rushing to complete IV and even had to delay the release to 2008. By 2011/12 when the Vita was released, Rockstar was already preparing for V and it wouldn't make sense to release a game for a universe ended 5/6 years before.
@@davidantonio8798 Also it probably would've cannibalized sales for Manhunt 2, and/or burnt out the public, I mean shit this series was nearly yearly releases
Manhunt 2 takes place in 2007 which technically makes it the latest game chronologically in the 3D GTA universe. Although Bully's events begin in 2006 and end in 2007, so they probably happen at the same time.

Cinematic universe is explicitly for films and TV. Even shared universe is only really meant for different properties that shouldn't usually be related (think Sonic and Dreams, or Smash Bros). There isn't really a staple term for games in the same franchise that are related, people just expect them to be nowadays. So entries that aren't get the term standalone.

As a kid I just played the games but listening and watching this and seeing how rockstar literally made a short story out of most characters starting from GTA 3 and giving backstories good or bad in the other games because all of them was previous years before the GTA 3 2001 year timeline. MIND BLOWN! I really hope GTA does this with the future GTAs.
Tony Sipriani killing CJ would have been a really neat connection between protagonists in a more interesting and accurate way that, for instance, was Trevor and Johnny
This video was fascinating as someone who is new to the GTA series and your video has convinced me to play the PS2 trilogy for the first time. What order would you recommend I play the three games: chronological or release?
Chronological order is better stating with GTA Vice City Stories, then Vice City -San Andreas- Liberty City Stories - 3 Because some characters died pretty early and only got development in the prequels, but It will come with some problems later because GTA 3 is kinda outdated but ok

There is another Character we forgot, and it's name is Reni she makes her Vocal Appearance through Radio in the Flashback FM in Liberty City Stories, until Vice City Stories she made her Full Appearance, but only to be Appeared as a Male wearing Lipstick with White Face and Red, until later when she Visited Dr Horowitz, she is now different, and her Voice sounded the Same as she sounded like from the Radio in Liberty City Stories, we know Vice City Stories took place in 1984, before she went to Liberty City to become the Host of Flashback FM after she been from Europe.
HD Universe is a reboot but the larger pop culture remains the same. Like that the Arnie parody Jack Howitzer kills a radio host in San Andreas and gets out of prison in V. And never forget Lazlo! GTA5 will be the first game since 3 without him since Lazlo Jones has now left Rockstar...
I think Vic is one of the odder things about the Shared Universe, or at least in terms of just VCS. It doesn't really make him at all seem like the same character as the dude in the Vice City intro. Even putting aside they don't really look or sound alike. After all Vic went through and the way he acts at the end, it doesn't make sense why he would go back into the game and in such as seemingly good mood about it. Especially when while he lost all his empire buildings, he probably was still able to keep a decent amount of cash. I think that's one of the main reasons I sometimes see people ignore him being the guy in the VC intro. Everything else about the shared throughline is pretty good, except that.
Reni from gta vcs make an appearance in the radio of gta lcs in flash radio i think, also in liberty city public radio, the lady brings lazlow profile that he was kicked out of vice city and san Andreas and decided to stay in liberty city to start the radio station chatterbox later in gta 3 time line, you won't find chatterbox radio station in liberty city stories, but in the liberty city public radio you'll find his channel there
While I can understand the writers and level/city designers wanting the freedom a reboot can provide for their showcase on the then next-gen hardware. I still wish this universe could have continued and wonder what kind of connections we would have gotten out of another game, be that an SA Stories or something new. Though I do have to wonder, considering how the protags of the stories games were such nothing characters in their original appearances who the heck would they have chosen as the protag of an SA Stories? I know a lot of people think it should be Brian Johnson but he was CJ's younger brother and CJ was minor back when Brian died. So unless they made another Bully game set in a public school in late 80s San Andreas I don't think a game starring Brian would work. Tenpenny could be an interesting protag but Jackson is probably more expensive now than he was back then.
I didn't forget lazlo, I just decided to cut the minute long chunk of the video where I talked about him, because there was no visual aid I could have given it, and the video was already getting longer than I would have liked.

Yeah I would love to see a rebooted version of him in GTA VI. Hell, Kent Paul could be our introductory character in GTA VI online, probably introducing us to different crime bosses or other business opportunities.
wat is a chad? i heard of it, but idk wat it means nobody has broken the meaning of "chad" down for me.🤔
@@Machete87 so essentially a “chad” is the archetype of “Mr. Cool”; ie, they never take shit from anybody, they usually have a very demanding demeanor, and they more than typically always have a way out of a problem (at least in this certain situation)
@@BennyBallbreakerHis name’s Paul, not Kent (which is where he’s from)
Kent Paul is the Muscle Man of the 3D GTA universe. They always know guys who most likely are involved in illegal stuff and serve as a liason to the main characters when they need it.
The real character (rather real person) to be the true anchor of the shared universe is Lazlow Jones, he’s in every game since 3 as either a radio personality or a celebrity in the story
And he won't be in 6, because he left the company along with Houser and Benzies and everyone else who made the PS2 era so special.
The golden era of GTA is long gone now, and 6 is gonna suck harder than 4 and 5 combined.
@@VitZ9 I’m aware, and honestly I agree. With 6 being in development hell for 10 years, the founders leaving, some of the best writers leaving, and the fact that 6 is being wayyy overhyped means that it will almost definitely suck when it releases

Funny how VCS is the last released 3D Universe GTA game while being first chronologically, when GTA 3 is the first released 3D Universe GTA while being last chronologically. Not counting Manhunt games, I believe those two are after GTA 3 chronologically.

"And even though I've gone over for all the big relevant characters there's still far too many minor references and cameos for me to go over"
Case in point. In Vice City, the talk show 'VCPR' had a character who was a nudist. He later appeared in GTA III.
Your videos feel somewhat unique in this sea of repetative content on UA-cam. Thanks for the efforts you give; it seems likw you're havijg a good time doing it!
TBC's best aspect is making niche videos that I had zero idea I had so much interest in
I came to start watching his videos due to my die hard Twisted Metal love, he does the video games I love dearly Justice, just as much as the niche games I won't ever play
He is the type of UA-camr that focus on quality over quantity
GTA uses mafia terms properly most of the times, so they wouldn't all of suddenly be incorrectly describing CJ as a 'Made Man' in the context of the Italian Mafia.
honestly this the best gta video I've seen in a long time. looks like a love letter to the series.
I remember getting mind blown at how major characters in gta 3 and vice city get mentioned in san andreas, it's like all three games with their own time-line are connected, as for vcs I think rockstar probably didn't really think of vic as a major character in vice city and it was before they came up with the idea to create vcs
He was always Lance’s brother tho
A part of me does wonder what Tommy Verceti and Cj are doing during the events of 3 in 2001
In addItion I’ve always wondered how San Andreas and Liberty City would look in 1984 during VCS
I feel a novelization of at least the 3D era that connects dots would be nice to bookend characters arcs
One of the major arcs of the series is the downfall of the Forelli Crime Family.
Vic Vance kills Forelli hitmen
Former Forelli thug Tommy Vercetti starts an organization hostile to them in Vice City and kills their boss and numerous men.
They're the only gang to appear in every 3d entry and be enemies with the protagonist in each one.
Man the guys at Rockstar really hate Forelli
@@nickrustyson8124😂😂
While it is interesting to see how all of these characters are connected, it really just kind of leaves you feeling unsatisfied a lot of the time, especially with the characters whose canonical final appearance is in GTA 3, where they not only don’t resemble the characters later games would portray them as, but in a few cases, like with Donald Love, he doesn’t even get a proper sendoff, he just leaves a note saying “goodbye”, and that’s it. It’s such an anti-climax for a cannibal we’ve seen grow from the silent yes man of another politician, to a man on top of his own empire.
Why would they resemble them if every GTA 3d game takes place before 3??? Make it make sense
@@ryguy9876That’s actually been told to us that’s not the same Claude. If anything they borrowed him and reshaped him into gta 3 Claude

1995: Bully??
1998: Liberty City Stories
2001: GTA III

Weren't Phil and Ray Machowski in Nicaragua, not Panama?
@@asais1024 minor error on my part, thanks
It just hit me after I saw the gta 6 trailer how Catalina & Claude are kind of similar to the characters in GTA 6. Not by how they look but kind of the same Bonnie & Clyde idea.
They were an early inspiration
I mean it's less of an anti-climax if you played 3 first, because then you'd be viewing the characters through "Oh they're fleshing out these characters from GTA III" lens rather than "Well that was an underwhelming ending for that character"
So playing GTA III first makes the most sense narratively and mechanically since it's much more simple than its successors.
Yeah, that's true, but at the same time, it would've been cool if there was a final game chronologically after GTA 3 to show the aftermath.
@@RetroRulzMyTown
What aftermath? Nearly every major gang leader or character in the series has been killed off in GTA3, or by the time of GTA3.
Also a good portion of Liberty City has been destroyed or turned into a crime scene. They'd be starting almost from scratch with all new characters we don't have any connections with from other 3D era games.
True, the first GTA game i ever played and completed was 3, and I went sporadically finishing each game in the 3D and HD universes.
In the good ending for Manhunt 2 Daniel is left on the outskirts of San Fierro where his new life and identity begins also Daniel face is modeled after a sketch of The Zodiac Killer other Manhunt references a radio ad in GTA 3 mentions corrupt police chief Gary Schafer is cleared of corruption charges by the court it also mentions missing witnesses GTA Vice Stories has a outfit for Vic that has him dress as a member of The Hoods and in the police stations in San Andreas there are several wanted posters for various gang members from Manhunt there’s also a photo of James Earl Cash in the police I always liked the few references to Manhunt GTA Online adding the iconic Please Stop Me Smiley masks and other masks was great they even added one mask from Manhunt 2 based off one of The Pervs gang members
Like Vic going from principled to a drug mule that gets gunned down immediately or the Forellis going from a legitimate threat to a spec on Liberty’s criminal underworld
The recent Hitman trilogy did something very similar for me, that I hadnt felt since the 3D GTA universe. Then in the second game I loved Martinez, Delgado, Janus and The Maelstrom becoming targets
The third game definitely stepped down a little from that, what was amazing about the second game was each level was foreshadowed in the first.
The sheer coincidence in this releasing just as I’m binging all things GTA
The shared universe is what made me love the GTA stories growing up
I've been replaying the 3D era these last few months (GTA 6 hype and all that), so I've been remembering all these connections, and then you make this vid, feels like you went into my mind, even mentioning the Toni/CJ theory (which I actually believe in). Great content, man
P.S. I know you kept only to the big physical appearances in the games, but I think a few radio station cases could be mentioned as well:
- Reni's (physical) appearance in VCS, and then being a DJ in LCS
- Lazlow going from station intern to DJ to hosting 2 talk shows (as well as crossing over to the HD era)
- Fernando Martinez going from reporter to DJ to talk show hijacker to running an affair program (and also crossing over to the HD era)
It's crazy that I still get exactly the same feeling that I got when these games were released. Motorbikes still seem new to me. Nostalgia is like a drug
Nothing like some bacon in the morning!!
Gary busey playing Phil was the best character choice ever
Ken Rosenberg’s lawyer firm is mentioned in the news during vice city stories
it is not 100% sure that Diaz actually set up the ambush in the beginning of vice city.
Good old Donald Love, I still remember how horrified I was when they revealed what(exactly) he was eating in that one cutscene.
Steak? Lol

The idea of Toni killing CJ kinda blew my mind. I never wouldve thought of that.
with stuff like rick and morty, 4-6 different call of duty timelines, and god knows how many batman reboots, it puzzles me why people cant seem to grasp that the GTA games are not all part of the same timeline or universe.
III, VC, LCS, VCS, and I think GTA Advance are apart of one,
IV, IV' TBOGT and TLAD, Chinatown Wars, V, and VI are apart of another.
and Im not sure if they are connected, but GTA and GTA2 are also not part of the first two timelines I mentioned.
There’s literally a photo of CJ in GTA V…
There's no way to tell if Claude really killed Maria, offed himself, or just shot in the air. They leave it an open mystery.
Manhunt is actually set in the GTA universe. Which is rockstars EVEN MORE controversial IP
I wish they made San Andreas stories for vita, it could have saved the console if released at the beginning of vita cycle

I doubt that Toni killed CJ, taking into account the friendships he made throughout the San Andreas campaign, especially with Woozie.

Cinematic universe is called that cause it's only on the big screen or on film that's what cinematic means it's not a phrase
Lazlo is the most prolific character
True story, this video originally had a minute long discussion of Lazlo's involvement in the series. But I ended up cutting it because there was no way to visualize it, and the video was already running longer than I wanted it to. I might release that portion of the video as a short.
As a kid I just played the games but listening and watching this and seeing how rockstar literally made a short story out of most characters starting from GTA 3 and giving backstories good or bad in the other games because all of them was previous years before the GTA 3 2001 year timeline. MIND BLOWN!
I really hope GTA does this with the future GTAs.
it's so sad that they basically just delete the 3D Universe
it's like Bacon, but tactical. Great video, comment for the algorithm
Chronological order is better stating with GTA Vice City Stories, then Vice City -San Andreas- Liberty City Stories - 3
Because some characters died pretty early and only got development in the prequels, but It will come with some problems later because GTA 3 is kinda outdated but ok
THANK YOU for using clips from the original versions of these games and not the "definitive" remakes. So many videos on these games nowadays just use footage from the remakes, and it's so disgusting to look at. Thank you for using the appropriate footage.
I remember as a kid, finding a sunkin ship in GTA 3 and trying to see if I could find it in the port of sa lol, then Vice city. I just assumed they were all in the same universe. And I spent hours trying to find what I didn't know at the time was called, easter eggs lol

With release of that trailer. Im gonna take the next year or so catching up with the previous titles, mosty ps2 and handhelds.
This is amazing. The GBA port was impressive but this is just as impressive.
I still play these games on multiple platforms
Thank you for not using Definitive edition clips
Reni from gta vcs make an appearance in the radio of gta lcs in flash radio i think, also in liberty city public radio, the lady brings lazlow profile that he was kicked out of vice city and san Andreas and decided to stay in liberty city to start the radio station chatterbox later in gta 3 time line, you won't find chatterbox radio station in liberty city stories, but in the liberty city public radio you'll find his channel there

8:00 “inconsequential”? i’d call losing and arm quite the consequence
What do you mean LCS doesn’t have a betrayal. Didn’t Tony’s mom send a hit out on him?
You missed the important characters, even though they don't appear on-screen - Lazlow and Fernando Martinez.
I didn't forget lazlo, I just decided to cut the minute long chunk of the video where I talked about him, because there was no visual aid I could have given it, and the video was already getting longer than I would have liked.
