Bro,
1) Don’t over torque the head bolts to compensate for a missing bolt
2) Just use a thread repair kit for the stripped head thread.
I knew very well that wasn't the 'proper' solution, but I also know most people that strip a head bolt in the block junk the engine, and that I was probably going to eventually to a better more permanent solution like a thread repair kit.
@@redlineranch. I would agree with Brooklyn. Not only would it not likely prevent a leak, but it would probably overstretch the remaining bolts as well as warp the head and the block from uneven torquing. The bolts will eventually break. That's why they have torque specs. DISCLAIMER: I'm not a mechanic. But I have seen plenty of "will it run" YT vids.
New Subscriber Just found your channel today and have watched and enjoy several of your videos
For the last 30 years I have been the proud owner of a 1989 Toyota Pickup, 183,000 miles 4 speed manual with air. It’s been my every day driver and is in excellent condition. There is hardly a week goes by that someone doesn’t try to buy it. Since I’m 71 years young I will probably never sell it. LOVE my little truck❤
Thanks for saving these old Toyota’s
Welcome too the channel sir! He has alot of other awesome videos also if you haven't checked them out already, it is great too see people still playing with these old yodas 👍🏾🇦🇺
@ Thank You 🙏
Yes I have watched several of his other videos and plan on watching more. It’s great that someone is finding and bringing these old gems back to life. In my area these old Toyota’s are impossible to find.
Love to have you here! I'm an absolute Toyota fanatic and love bringing these old trucks back to life! I hope to keep producing quality content about Toyotas for a long time! sounds like you got a sweet truck and I would defiantly advise you hold onto it!
@heartlessgem_ Appreciate this a ton! I don't plan on stopping anytime soon and want to keep finding the gems hidden away in people yards forgotten about and bringing them back to the glory they deserve!
@redlineranch. sorry for the late reply! Thought I'd like ya comment when I saw it, was 5am here in Australia 🤙🏾 killer videos man, definitely keen to see more engine / gearbox combinations you have in store, if ur wanting to look into 4AGE's at any point, there's a kiwi guy on youtube 4AGEgarage, he's got some awesome content, 4WD and drifting, heaps of dyno testing with proper charts, different heads, compression ratios, porting, cam profiles/lift, ITB efi and carb, all types of exhaust combinations and designs, man's a genius 😂👍🏾 anyways that's for taken the time out of ur day to read the comments, good too see youtubers interacting with their audience and sharing stories/info or even general tips and help, keep up the awesome work 👌🏾🇦🇺
Thanks!
Thank you so so much for the support! it means a ton to the channel!
I always watch your videos to relax after a long day at work. Keep it up and you’ll become the biggest car creator on UA-cam. Love your videos.
Helicoil might work
If it has a cracked block you could also try a head gasket sealer you got nothing to loose at this point since your done up shit creek try bars leaks head gasket sealer nothing to loose 50% it’ll work 50 percent it won’t it’s always 50/50 in this situation I’ve had it work for me just a suggestion
ill probably too to top a thread repair kit and might even take the block/ head to a machine shop to check for crack, id be nice to try and save this old engine! worst case I can try a head gasket sealer and see if it does anything!
always fun to get daylight under the tires
I’m not one to subscribe to many channels but this one was instant win for me. I hope this guys subscriber count explodes.
I appreciate that, I'm trying hard to get quality content out!
I never understood why people fill dead vehicles with trash, sitting on their property.
This is great. Love the all the mechanic knowledge and explanations, helps me work on my own truck!
Man you might not care about that thing but I would love to find a great deal on an old one like that even with all of its issues!! So sick. Great work as always. I vote put it on the rock crawler!
You did the best you can do, man..atleast you tried, buddy....I always like watching your videos...
Since you managed to get that stripped bolt out, can you tap a new thread through both the head and the block, then use a slightly bigger bolt that matches the rethread? That's what Simon Fordson would probably do.
Keep the engine and transmission for future work, use the cab on your crawler, and junk the rest.
I love the crawler idea!
I think that is my plan for now, id love to make the crawler more 'user friendly' and have things like glass and heat in the cab, and I know the 22r is able to be saved for a future project!
As Your working on that truck, I noticed that there was a Toyota Corona (RT43) in the background. That is when I signed Up for My Apprenticeship as a Mechanic back in 1970, So that could be a '69 or '70 model. I had Me a 76 Toyota Hilux & to this day, regret having to sell it. It had the 20R Engine in it & the 22R came out after it. Tip I learned while doing My apprenticeship is to Tourge the head bolts 10 psi under factory specs for expansion reasons. Keep valves adjusted too is also important on them.
Awesome little truck. Reminds me of my cousin Adam's little toyota pickup. Drove it till the only thing left was the engine and transmission. Everything else rusted through. Still ran too.😊
Just do the top end. It’s not hard, a little time, but not bad. Take it down to the head gasket. Get the head machined. Replace gaskets, valve job, tune-up, plugs, wires, rotor. Carb might be ok. Starter, fuel pump, clean gas tank, coolant system, drop in a new radiator, deep cell battery, fresh wiring harness. Lose the camper. Fresh tires, brakes, master cylinder, Pressure wash it. Clean out interior and shampoo everything. Clean up the dash. Seat covers. Bob’s your uncle. It is ready to go another 100K easy. For what? Less than $2000? You’ll have people wanting to buy it all day long. Time, tools, chilton manual, all plug and play. Hope to see you do it.
It's definitely got the potential to be a great project, but the body damage and massive rust hole in the floor board make me apprehensive to put that much time and money into this truck, for now I'm going to leave it and focus on other projects I have and maybe if/ when I get some 'extra' time I can do some work to this beat up truck.
I am a Toyota fan and owner of an '85 4Runner SR5 sunroof model. Love your content!
Thanks, I appreciate the support and hope to get more Toyota content out regularly!
Wow you’re really good at fixing that truck to run, I would have passed on it. Just looks like too much to fix for me.
i love your channel man pls post more content
Great video and truck😎🔥
Rebuild it fixit up nicely, in addition to making a series it will give you cash when you sell it online because you got the paper work for it.
Always love the new videos man you rock.
Thanks man! appreciate the continued support!
@@redlineranch. How do I know if it is my piston rings or my valves burning oil? Before I attempt to put this thing back together (22RE) I'd like to fix that.
Helicoil. Or sumn comparable. Just make sure whatever drill you use to bore out new threads is PERFECTLY straight. Or rather perfectly perpendicular to the engine. Might have to take off hood since its way in the back.
Stripping a thread and deciding to overtorque the rest is definitely one of those "end of a long day, not thinking straight" mistakes lol
My Tercel has a blown head gasket and it still runs and drives fine so it's not the head gasket. It's something else - try a new ignition switch and cap and rotor
suggest to try a longer headbolt
good thought! I might try that!
Wow Good Job brother
Thank you!
How do you prevent it from grinding out the timing cover again?
maintenance, making sure the timing chain is inspected/ replaced every 100k miles or so, as long as the timing chain guides are intact, the chain never comes in contact with the aluminum cover.
Where do you get sensor plugs, cause on mine it takes any off they just straight break
you can sometimes find them online, it does take a bit of research to make sure you are getting the proper parts!
Another great episode with Toyota activities and happy puppies. Definitely body swap the crawler. 🤘
Toyotas and dogs are some of the best thing in life! I think the plan for now is tout that cabin the crawler, and keep the rest for parts.
@ Absolutely and getting all fours off the ground on that jump was pretty damn magical!
Fresh eyes and new sub here. Bro, I love the old yotas and couldn't help but notice the old silver, what I think is, like a 70' corona? I'd love to find something like that or have someone just give it!? Sweet!! ✌️from Ohio
Perfect candidate for a solid axle and TDI swap or like you mentioned swap the cab into the crawler 👌
one day I would love to do a TDI swap, they just get so expensive so fast! but they are sweet engines
How will that stripped head bolt affect the engine? Why did you torque the other bolts to 75 ft. Pounds? I’m learning quite a bit from your channel.
@@tshadow6 torquing the others down to 75 is definitely NOT the right thing to do, but based on the totality of everything that happened with the truck I was at a point that I didn’t care if anything bad happened. The proper way to fix a stripped head bolt is to use a thread repair kit, otherwise without the clamping force of all the head bolts the head gasket is likely to fail cause more issues, up to and including possibly causing the cylinder head to warp or distort.
If this was a truck that had more potential/wasn’t so beat up, torn up, and rusty, I would have properly fixed the block.
@ thank you. I’m on my third Toyota truck. My son is driving my 2005 Tacoma SR5, I’m driving a 2017 Tundra. Our little 2004 Taco was totaled.
I had a 1986 4X4 long box and it lost a quart of water every 20 miles. My mechanic friends never could find where the water was going. Do you have any guess on the issue?
Oil was clear. Head gaskets ok, No white smoke out of the exhaust. ??? George in BC, Canada.
Hey there! What’s your opinion on the automatic transmissions in these pickups? Thanks
Time-Sert inserts seemed to work OK in Camry engines for stripped head bolts.
They make a kit for this engine and ive always wanted to see how well they work, so maybe ill look into that or something similar to see how it holds up!
What state are you in. Great job.
Nice Tacoma there
God I love these videos
Shit show that began as a serious repair video.
I’ve had luck helicoil on 22re with same issue should hold ok with stock power
Great to know! I wanted to do a more permanent solution so I'll probably end up doing that eventually.
Sorry you didn't hit a home run with this truck but hey on a brighter note you got some good Raily jumps out of it
It was a blast to rally around the property, so that's a bonus, and its got a ton of parts that could help on future projects!
*Napoleon Dynamite voice* "You got like three feet of air that tiime.."
Is that a 4runner hat?? Where’s it from?
It is, it was custom made by my lovely girlfriend for me, Ive debated making them and some other similar things as merch for the channel!
I would love to buy one of your Toyotas 😂
I do occasionally sell them, but not super often, I like to hoard them, and keep them for parts/ future projects.
No valve cover nuts!
I hope you open it and do a stripped head repair kit on it, fix it right.
I very well might, but I also might just use the cab for my crawler and go from there. it was rather discouraging to feel the head bolt strip.
I would want that truck bed but shipping to holland is hella expensive unfortunately
I can only imagine! this truck does have a ton of good parts though and I hope to be able to use it to its full potential!
@ i hope so to otherwise it’s a shame to see it al go to waste when some people need parts for it too. Cant wait to see you gix the rockcrawler 😁
Agree to try helicoil the engine before writing it off.
that is the long term plan!
That truck in Florida people would die for it. I will put it for sale Florida trust me you will sell it.
smell the coolant if it smell like exhaust, well it's just a thought
that a good thought!
That body is perfect here in pgh
people seldom park a great running vehicle.
Very true, but it's always a possibility especially if its beat up and older.
Is there a proper way to fix the engine, like rethreading the stripped component?
Edit: I’m seeing some comments suggesting this and am genuinely interested to know.
Yes, they make thread repair kits that require tapping the hole to a bigger thread size and putting an insert into the bigger threads that has the proper head bolt thread, its not a super difficult fix, but its also never going to be "factory quality"
@ Thanks for the reply! I appreciate it
Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. It doesn't seem like you put a lot of money into it, just 3-4 days of labor.
ANOTHER TOYOTA!! No way
Toyotas are the best! I love working on them and bringing them back to life, even if they are 'beyond repair'
ENTERTAINING
Thank you! I try hard to make quality content!
I had a 22r in my '85 Toyota pickup...those things will last forever. Had someone pull out in front of me and "Totaled" it. The insurance company gave me like $1,500 for it and I was going to buy it back, to try to fix or at least for the motor. But they wanted $1,000 for the buy back :(.
It's crazy how reliable they are, and also how much they hold their value! Sorry to hear that, hopefully you can find one to replace it!
The only good sign is the 22R on the front XD
agreed! the 5 speed transmission is also a bonus!
Why not tap a new thread?
I might do that eventually, but after 3 days of work, the extensive body damage, and finding the massive rust hole in the floor it was not something I wanted to jump straight into.
@redlineranch. understandable
someone might want the camper part not like you can buy them anymore
Maybe, but its missing windows and the back hatch to the camper, so its probably best to give away or toss.
Another great video but damn that's a beat to sh*t truck that seems trashed beyond just keeping the motor
I agree, I wish it was in a bit better shape, or that maybe the engine didn't strip a head bolt, but it is what it is and I can't do anything about it now, so ill try to make the best of it and use as many parts as possible!
This Pick up has never parked up,.there was nothing wrong with it...😉
Well, you tried, looks like a parts truck now👍🏻
1980’s BMW front bumper? 😂
Maybe? I couldn't tell what it was, I was thinking maybe a Nissan truck or something.
That body is perfect for the crawler, can't save them all
it's all good
that's one way to look at it!
It’s an old Toyota. It will definitely run again.
they ALWAYS do
Can I save the Pizza Planet truck from Toy Story
I saw one like this on craigslist. I'd by it off you if you're interested
maybe, but I think for now I want to keep it around to use on some projects. thanks for the interest!
Hell ya !!!
Toyota cant die
That's for sure!
This is all I wanna do. Just get real cheap cars and fix em up
Want some 2wd fenders?
possibly! but if I end up putting it on the crawler these beat up fenders will be perfect to cut up for tire clearance!
My good man, to see how one such as yourself and others like your good self can actually work deep into an engine sans a bench and a floor to sit the work bench upon, but instead here conversely you're on the ground outdoors.
Just going at it, tearing into an engine this deep... The ground is your work bench.
Well, it just to me is the epitome of 'True Grit' gear-headsmanship
of the 'True Grit' determination undaunted style of "shade-tree" mechanic* personified.
* I'm not throwing "shade" suggesting you good sir are a mechanic of lesser abilities, completely the opposite.
BTW, I punned using "throwing shade" bc I believe in Mew Mexico, the shade from a tree or building for much of the year is where I'd do this work.
If I had to critique you on anything it would not be your aptitude in mechanics.
But maybe on at times the long winded, gratuitous and repetitive dialog that at times you are rattling off Gattling Gun style.
Just my humble opinion there as otherwise I admire your chops dude on Toyotas from the long gone days of basic runners you could buy brand new for 10K or less prior to 1990.
That is fact If you didn't include A/C or any other options and if you did go for options it was likely bc you were a little older with a little more dinero in the banko.
Why! poor thing😢
Healy coil
Fix it please
I very well might, but it's rather beat up and rusty, so it would never be a "good" truck.
Sucks you wasted the time to replace the head gasket only for it to take a shit on you
Scrap it!!!
Parts truck never know what you can sell of that ... maybe 🤷♂️
very true, there are a ton of parts on this thing that could keep other trucks on the road!
Keep it for parts really not worth fixing the engine although it's a 22R engine
Honestly this is the best bet for this truck, its defiantly got a ton or parts that could help keep other truck on the road!
Toyota didn’t put sunroofs in the trucks back then at the factory. That’s a dealer or aftermarket installed item.
There are some guys who export these to Guatemala who buy these trucks all the time.
But I’d say that cab is perfect for your rock crawler!
yes they did, its a very rare option but they did have factory sunroofs starting in '79
I know I could probably find someone that wants to export this truck, but I wouldn't get much for it and at the end of the day id rather make the crawler 100x better and more usable.
@ yup yup, for sure! I wrote that before watching the whole video.
I look forward to your cab swap videos!
Can I have the truck 😊
Sure you did, junk-car buyers are paying $800
Give it to whistling diesel to destroy.
haha, If I wanted to destroy it I would have no issue doing it myself, but for now its got potential to help get a few other trucks on the road/ to make my rock crawler 1000% better, so ill refrain for the time being.
BYe.
Why you doing the car so bad we don't appreciate that fix up the car someone give it to you
Between the rust and major body damage, it's hard to imagine getting this truck back up to a 'good' quality without over a hundred hours of work and thousands of dollars.
69th like 😎
Needs turbo do burnouts perfect truck.
That not a bad idea! Or maybe an engine swap AND a turbo for a super rad burnout truck!
scrap it
lolol NO. Its got a ton of good parts and I will end up using the cab and parts
@redlineranch. ain't 😂 patiently waiting for another vid
