This guy is quickly becoming my favorite automotive UA-camr. Can’t believe he’s only got 11k subs, glad I’m part of the before 15k 👌🏽I’m a big time 4Runner fan and would live to see an overlander build, but I’m also not apposed to see an old hilux or a patina 70’s-80’s Land Cruiser shell on it and build THAT into an overlander!
That drive train is indeed legendary. I gave my 2003 tundra to my cousin at 350k miles, he still has it going at 525k. And BRO you just super confidently tearing up these engines and getting them back in shape is amazing!! I vote body swap but either way will be fantastic!
I love these engines and always enjoy seeing someone give them a new lease on life! I have one in my '03 4Runner and the way it runs, I feel like it may outlive me!
This was my first truck I bought on my own as soon as I got a part time job. Cost me $3,600 and it had 230k miles on it. I got it off a contractor who had used it for work so it was filthy! But it got me through college and I have since passed it off to my dad who uses it as a work truck again. Still running pretty good! I miss it, I think it was the perfect size for a truck for my purposes.
my dad had an 03 tundra that i miss dearly, the "Legendary" 4.7L v8 blew up on the highway. its so cool to see someone with the same love for Toyota's😁
My guess is the junk yard drilled the hole in the tank to drain the gas. They don't want gas in the tank in the yard. I would drop a new body on the $15K chassis if it's not rusted
Good job on saving it from the scarp yard and making it run. The possibilities are endless and if it were up to me, I’d do a FJ60 series/similar body swap. Please include a price breakdown in any follow up videos and keep up the good work.
That's the plan! Whatever I do I want to make a rad vehicle on a budget, I don’t have new truck money but I have the ability to make a cool truck with what I can find for cheap!
Hell yeah, the tundra lives again! This was sooo epic to see. I didn’t expect the 2UZ to recover from that, but DAYUM! My vote is I’d love to see you clean up that tundra n’ turn it into a full size off-road rig. Not a rock crawler, but a trail master. I’ve seen people put ranch beds on the back of these 1st gen tundra’s n’ make it a rugged rig. That’ll tow your project vehicles cross country.
Its very interesting that im seeing this video. My father just gave me his 2004 green Tundra with 360,000 miles. It needs a paint job but the engine sounds so smooth still 😂😂
lol i just sub'd after watching your toyota pickup rebuilds and you immediately upload another vid! hell yes! where did you learn to rebuild these, it's super impressive?
Thanks for the sub! I learned to work on my own cars growing up and it’s just kinda evolved into what you’ve seen on the channel, always trying to improve my skills and knowledge, and push my limits of what I can do!
From what I've seen over the years, you should put a different body onto that chassis. Otherwise you are looking at easily 1-5 years of work and issues. Body swap is hard work as well, but all the important geometry is already set. Best way to go in my opinion
I like this video a lot. I can't think of a better vehicle to rescue than a bulletproof first gen Tundra. I would like to see you put a new bed on this truck and restore this truck. Since this truck has survived some obvious abuse and miraculously still runs after a timing belt broke, I think it deserves to be restored.
I'd say a 79 to 85 extended cab and rear body but you do what you think would be awesome my dude. Yota Mike may have some of that unless you do already!
I think I would put a flat bed on it and a winch bumper and make a few trips to the u pull it and piece it back together and paint it with tinted Line-X. Doesn’t look like a rot bucket which in PA where I live is like gold.
No way! My 2000 just rolled into 340k last week! It’s very capable and I like that I can camp inside with minimal gear since it’s all secure and enclosed in the suv unlike a pickup.
Bro, definitely put the 60's, 70's, 80's body on the old school chassis. I love your content man it's most informative. I would have liked seeing more detail in re-timing the motor on this one but not complaining. I'm ignorant to not only timing but especially this motor. Since watching this video yesterday I've seen a few of these trucks and it got me excited. I didn't realize their V8 motors were as worthy as their old-school four-cylinders. Is that a 3/8 drive Milwaukee or a 1/2 inch?
Nice job. I would enjoy watching you do a chassis swap to something old. Been thinking about getting a sequoia for that reason since those are way cheap.
Hey I see alot of cheap cadillac CTS cars on marketplace. they have a known issue with the Northstar engines but outside of that, I heard they are kind of built proof. do you think this would be some content you might bring?Like a porche LS swap video , omg in this economy lol i love the video bro keep it up!
Badass... finding a truck that's absolutely trashed & just working in the field with basis handtools. Some professional "mechanics" wouldn't even attempt
Genuine Toyota/Mitusboshi timing belts are renowned for lasting well beyond the service interval. I'm guessing that broken belt isn't one. A good choice for that powertrain would be a second gen. Tacoma PreRunner. PreRunners are cheaper because few people want a 2WD-only truck. PreRunners come with rear e-lockers as well (I think).
Watching three weeks after you posted the video, so it's too late to try to influence your decision. My vote is ALWAYS to fix the truck instead of creating a Frankenstein. I'm a new subscriber in Katy, Texas.
Not the most popular idea, I would just scab the rest of the truck back together and have a decent hooptie tundra. sounds like you got very lucky with the timing belt situation. All the valve train must have been on the base circle when the belt failed preventing the valves from being harmed.
If i had any mechanic skills and access to a cool old truck body, id absolutely drop a cool body on that chassis. Or strip it, add in a 5 point harness/seat, and sell it to a 20 something who wants to be a mudder 😂
I know the engine was the main draw, but from a purely can it be done cheap and from a salvage yard and a harbor freight, I'm curious how much of the body / interior could be replaced/ refurbished. could it be made street legal or only backyard ranch ready?
I think with enough work and time you could definitely clean this thing up and make it a reasonable work truck, the main things I’d need to do would be replace the carpet and broken windows and any interior pieces missing, but all that work for a stock truck doesn’t sound as exciting to me
does the 4.7 actually mount up to a 89-94 pickup/4runner with a 5 speed? I've seen them mount with the 5vz but not the v8s and thats gonna be a tight fit!
I love your youthful enthusiasm about a truck that many would cross the street to avoid.
😂😂
Hahaha it’s all about the potential!

I have this model truck (00) and it feels great at 270K miles. Will keep it 'til I die.
Good job on saving it from the scarp yard and making it run. The possibilities are endless and if it were up to me, I’d do a FJ60 series/similar body swap. Please include a price breakdown in any follow up videos and keep up the good work.

Body swap has my vote, would be so cool to see that drive train in a Toyota sunrader
70s 80s on that chassis!👍🏽
hey man got a beautiful rav4 and have been obsessed with your Toyota videos. thank you for your vids

Please be careful, the 1st gen tundra’s have lower ball joint failures. So if you do go the route of fixing the tundra, be aware of that.
Its very interesting that im seeing this video. My father just gave me his 2004 green Tundra with 360,000 miles. It needs a paint job but the engine sounds so smooth still 😂😂
These engines are amazing and unstoppable!
@@redlineranch. That's what I hear 🤟

I love tundras so watching this was a treat
Good find. Congrats on getting it running.
Body swap has my vote, would be so cool to see that drive train a Toyota sunrader
You sure get into some fun adventure mechanic stuff, man! Thanks for the uploads, I watch them all!

I HAVE A 2006 TUNDRA CREW CAB ,,FOR ME BEST TRUCK EVER BUILT,,RECENTLY I MADE THE TIMING BELT ..AND EVERY THING GO EXCELLENT ..WITH ALMOST 200K M .!!
you are lucky. if that was the vvt-i version which is 2005-2006 years, you can pretty much consider that engine gone lol. i love the 2uz
There’s something about rescuing, modifying and beating the shhh out of old Toyotas. I’m a a fan of that. Subbed!
2uz in a 3rd gen 4runner would be so cool, along with a manual
Respect to this dude for working on that shitbox. Great channel keep it wrenching boss!
What a good find.
I'd say a 79 to 85 extended cab and rear body but you do what you think would be awesome my dude. Yota Mike may have some of that unless you do already!

Strip the interior, race seats, cage and a flat bed.
Fix the wiring, flatbed conversion, fiberglass front fenders, 35's, clean the interior and call it good.
Toyota stout on the chassis 👍
love the 4.7
Another great vid mate 😀😀😀
Awesome video!
Definitely the 97 4runner. Underrated vehicle with its relatively gutless engine.
I definitely know what you mean! Our 97 4runner just blew a head gasket with 340k miles on the clock
No way! My 2000 just rolled into 340k last week! It’s very capable and I like that I can camp inside with minimal gear since it’s all secure and enclosed in the suv unlike a pickup.

So dope. Go retro!
I like the body swap idea!
There are many very very nice tundras on the East coast and Midwest that need a frame. This plus that is a nice truck.
That’s definitely a good thought! Especially being out here in the southwest there’s no rust at all on the chassis!
I want to see more Toyota diesels, to bad you never got them over there in the land of the "free to buy which ever vehicle you want" 🤠
Nice job. I would enjoy watching you do a chassis swap to something old. Been thinking about getting a sequoia for that reason since those are way cheap.
Engine still sounds good lucky no bends valves👌🏽
! Just put a Good Shell on it Once the Frame is Straight. The wiring isn't that hard!

The first gen Tundra is Iconic, so sad to see one in this shape.
Yea that’s exactly what I would do
Great video!!! Want to sell the Toyota emblem off the grill?
Watching three weeks after you posted the video, so it's too late to try to influence your decision. My vote is ALWAYS to fix the truck instead of creating a Frankenstein. I'm a new subscriber in Katy, Texas.
Add the drive train to your forerunner
Man imagine that engine in the Hilux, you'd definitely be able to keep up with traffic in your next Hilux adventure. 😅
👀👀
I like swapping a new body on it. something unusual. I have a 2001 Sequoia with the 2UZ in it. I don't think I'll ever sell it.
Nice video, impressive skills man! Use that chassis on another truck. If you need to sell it, trucks just simply go for more money.
Lots of potential!!!!!
Agreed! I’m excited to see where this goes!
great job
I want the corona in background but I'm way in eastern Canada. My first car was a 67 corona
I enjoy the content.
Love your videos, what camera de you use?
Put the body of a 71 Hilux on it. I think the lobster lights would look great.
Not the most popular idea, I would just scab the rest of the truck back together and have a decent hooptie tundra. sounds like you got very lucky with the timing belt situation. All the valve train must have been on the base circle when the belt failed preventing the valves from being harmed.
Please do a body swap !!! Something cool😊

What’s better owning a timing belt engine vs timing chain if you can do service yourself?🎉
my scrapyard wont sell any car that comes in. most of them are newer than what I'm driving.
Im a Toyota man. Id love to restore this fine vehicle
put it in the 4runner 👍
That truck I like it
That truck begs for a cab swap. A Fiat 500 would look gorgeous on it
That would be amazingly ridiculous!
Do the body swap, would be cool.
Hell yeah. Feels good turning nothing into something.
Looks like it has frame damage from the looks of the cab and bed gap on the passenger side. Over all you got a drivetrain
long live the hoopties
since you got a title i would just change the body on the same frame
I vote body swap. Love the video's. 🤙🏽🤙🏽
hey man, you know a good website for car parts, i have a 2004 doge dakota beater that im trying to fix
Retro truck for sure.
I vote for you to take the engine out of it!
Throw a 1st gen cab on it!
That’d be a sweet swap!
I know the engine was the main draw, but from a purely can it be done cheap and from a salvage yard and a harbor freight, I'm curious how much of the body / interior could be replaced/ refurbished. could it be made street legal or only backyard ranch ready?

what you do is use the engine, forget the transmission, manual only
in a pickup or 4runner before 95
does the 4.7 actually mount up to a 89-94 pickup/4runner with a 5 speed? I've seen them mount with the 5vz but not the v8s and thats gonna be a tight fit!
@@Cat03-uo9it custom bellhousings, like $500, then custom mounts, they fit, worth it
👍👍👍 body swap for sure
Just fix it !!!!!!!
restore the whole truck!!!
Looks like n Arizona
Put motor in a 3rd gen runner
This look like it came out of Los Angeles skid row😂
It’s definitely seen better days, but it’s got a solid drivetrain!
@redlineranch. Have you thought of a Manual transmission from an Nissan 350z, I'm pretty sure there are adapter plates for people that drift
Ditch the body for a newish one.
Definitely stuff an older body on that frame from the '80s
It would definitely be amazing to make a cool older truck really cool with this more modern chassis
fix it up and keep it
maybe, but I also have big plans for this truck, or at least parts of it!
OK I will be watching 👍🏻keep it going 😁
I had a feeling you were New Mexican
Swap a hilux body on it would be cool
Retro look
By a landcruzer picup
Fix it right
corolla
Old truck on newer frame
Fix the tundra!
burnout in the dirt is not
its a dirtout
