That truck is actually a 1999 model year. 99 will have a turn style headlight switch, a little cubby below the air bag switch if not equipped with heated seats, and both 12 volt outlets in the lower dash. 98 has pull type headlight switch, and a power outlet above the airbag switch.
VPs air lock every single time it loses prime. Starting fluid is the easiest and quickest way to unlock VP. It won’t hurt it. This trucks case it wasn’t getting any fuel at all
That and on some of these trucks they call it lazy ecm where it won’t start until the wait to start light comes on you turn the key on and the wait to start light doesn’t come on for a few seconds then it comes on and it fires
@@cwg1998 yea, once the oil pressure gauge raises (fake gauge), that’s when you should turn the key. I’ve had so many 2nd gens with the delayed wait to start ecm issue

Next time you have one that hard of starting, use that manual trans to your advantage. . .pull it with another truck and spin the motor over in 4th gear.
If it was that exact truck, but 12 valve I would probably pay more than it’s worth because I wouldn’t have to smog it here in Commiefornia. Regular cabs are exceptionally hard to find now
You can spray as long as the motor is spinning do not spray and then turn the key on and intake heater my ignite and go boom . So get the motor spinning and give it a spray and you will be good. The old GM diesels the plant would start them with a rag soaked with gas and ring it out and let nothing but the fumes will sucked in and don’t turn lose of rag and this one’s the first v8 diesels that were junk and I knew guys buying these brand new and pull motor out and put a 350 in it and brink top dollar !

In the in rust belt of Illinois that truck would sell for 10k friend of mine bought a 01 24v extended cab auto 4x4 with 340xxx that you could flint stone from the rust holes in the floor 😂 and that's wasn't a joke and paid 9k for it
It would be a different story here in W-NY. No rust is the big thing. Everything below the hood line could be sprayed w/bed liner to keep it that way. Then if you could make the engine/drive line dependable, inc tires,, add a plow and lights, you could make some $$ plowing snow. I paid 3k for my 96 long bed single cab 12v auto.. had rod knock. pulled the engine had a shop rebuild it for 2700, installed it and no problems since. 4 years runnin
I use a rag and damp the rag with starting fluid and put it in the air filter...i let it sit there for 60 seconds or so..the starting fluid fumes will get in it there instead of spraying starting fluid it directly in there.
If the vacuum pump is leaking it will cause high blowby. 10 dollar and some time fix. Mine just got stolen in Houston. Shit sucks, I had a lot into it.

buying this truck, youre paying for the chassis and 5 speed. motor needs to be gone through, new VP, missing a lot of stuff under the hood it looked like. probably gotta mess with that crappy vacuum HVAC they have. fluid changes all around. its a clean cab and bed, got a 5 speed. thats the only redeeming qualities. I'd buy this thing for 3500ish. at that price you can make your money back parting it or fixing it.
Atleast the body isn’t rotted out I bought a 91 k3500 Chevy 7 months ago and just had to put a new engine in it guy supposedly rebuilt it with no records shown appeared to be redone and now having to rebuild trans 🤷🏼♂️ luck of the draw

I have a 53 block with 307k. If that block was going to mess up it would have done it by now. The hard start could be a crank sensor or the crossover line on the back of the motor.
Surprisingly the 53 block isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. And VP44 24v’s aren’t bad either. They just get a bad rep thanks to the VP44’s getting starved of fuel/fuel pressure.
@@VBELTandSON fair enough iv never been a fan of the electronic Cummins vp44 5.9 comine rail 5.9 or 6.7 my distain even extends to all the ford diesels and even the GM diesels as far as I'm concerned none of the big 3 do it right there are massive problems with the Duramax power stroke and the Cummins they all start good on❤ paper until Ford GM and dodge engineers get a hold of them then they become fairly problematic because of government bs and that even extends to gas vehicles

Difference is the 24v has computer driven fuel systems, if you P-Pumped a 24v then you basically have a 12v that’s 10x better. The only trucks imo that have 0 and I mean 0 computers, would be the 6.9 idi, and Chevy’s/Detroit 6.2 & 6.5’s diesels. And maybe the 7.3idi. Anything after has some sort of Electrical computer part on them. Otherwise the 12v’s wouldn’t have PCM replacements.

It might have a bad crank sensor The starting fluid gives a little more Spin to get over the crank sensor

Where im at 6500-8500$ mainly because it’s rust free and manual. Swap that vp out for a p-pump reasonable. No blow by ide take the risk
