As a psychotherapist, you need to understand the gravity of this band's impact on many many people 's emotional health. Tools music goes deep into humanities idiosyncrasies. You should do a deep dive into into their stuff. Plus the tool army will show up. spiral out.
Thanks! Glad you’re part of this awesome community.
Beautifully stated. Tool is a psychotherapist's dream. From addiction songs like, "Undertow", "Sober", "H." To songs of reuniting with the inner child like "Jimmy" to dealing with grief and loss like "10,000 day p. 1 and 2" there such brilliance and depth to Tool.
We call ourselves the Tool Army. Tool has a cult like following. I’m using the word cult very tongue in cheek. Tool doesn’t make songs, they make experiences!!
Spiral Out 🤙

Keep going. Spiral out.
Tool's music has done more for me than therapy.
Maynard is a lyrical genius
Very impressive! I was blown away. Thanks for being here. 🙏👍🎵
That's an understatement
Word!!
Tool is a life changing experience. If you learn his (Maynard) back story and listen to their albums from start to finish you will hear/see them evolve and they will drag you with them. They got me through many stages of my life.
More tool videos !
Would love more Tool! You could honestly do all 5 of their studio albums and we'd be here for it 🤘🌀
Thanks for watching and sharing! Glad you’re here.
Would love to see you analyze Vicarious by Tool, such an incredible song
As a psychotherapist you should check out the song forty-six and two. It's about facing the dark side of your subconscious and integrating it into your conscious mind.
You should check out the song" the patient" by Tool, this song has been there for me and taught me so much patience in my life.
I loved this reaction so much. Maynard's lyrics have been blowing my mind for decades. Welcome my friend...
Appreciate it! Thanks for being here!
spiral out! keep going!
"Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion"...are you fucking kidding me?! Brilliant!
Thanks for watching!
The song “Anesthesia” by the band Type O Negative would be a great song to get your interpretation on. I think you would find it interesting as well.
Check out the band Blue October
🤘🏻🌀
Please do "Shrunk" by Aesop Rock.
The best band of my lifetime! A poet, an octopus, an artist and a groove master got together and never looked back. 30+ year fan. They have no bad songs. Try "10,000 Days, (Wings Pt.2)". It's about Maynard's Mom.
Thanks for the info. I’ll check it out. Appreciate you watching.
You might want to listen to I Drive the Hearse by Porcupine Tree.
I didn't expect such a practical explaination of the lyrics, thanks so much!
Thanks for the positive feedback!
pushit is a banger with a similar theme but more angry , this song shows how much he matured from his younger reaction to conflict
Interesting. Thanks for letting me know.
I would do the Salival version
It’s just the live version of Pushit
Pushit is amazing but certainly a darker tone as based on a more emotionally and physically abusive relationship. It explores a lot of cluster B features particularly emotional instability
It's great to see people in the psychoanalytic field reviewing Tool songs/videos. There is so much help that Tool songs can provide people as long as they allow themselves to be open to the experience. Schism is one of most direct in terms of lyrics, but as always, the music & lyrics fit together in ways that have to be experienced multiple times, especially since everyone has their own approach to music (some listen for the lyrics, some for the beat, some for the guitar, etc.).
Welcome aboard. I'll be curious to see your impressions on other songs in the future. The whole album Lateralus is amazing, as is it's namesake song. There is an expression: there are no bad Tool Albums/Songs, & for the most part that is correct. If you're looking for a specific song to review next, I'd suggest 46&2, about human development, or H, a song dealing with the thoughts of becoming a father (or at least that's the interpretations that most people have come to about the songs, as Tool is always open to personal interpretation).
Spiral out...
Many thanks! 🙏
I love that you said "they're not rushing it...they're just letting it breathe" because I believe to enjoy Tool you have to be patient and not rush. Their music is patient.
Thanks for your comment. I really enjoyed that part of the song. It’s very rare that a band is comfortable enough to include that much room to breathe, especially in what many would traditionally label as a rock song. These guys transcend labels and I love that! 🙏
@@PsychotherapistReacts exactly! Thank you for the reaction 🤙
I'm a Clinician- I discovered TOOL when I was in Graduate School in the early 90's- at their inception. They quickly became my favourite band. MJK is a lyrical genius indeed- but the band as a whole is one of the rare exceptions to the rule- in that every one of them are absolute masters of their respective craft. Their body of work offers a truly cathartic experience for the listener who is willing to take an introspective journey. I believe with every ounce of my being that music saves lives. Art saves lives- and can be trancendent. I highly recommend that u continue the TOOL experience- u will not regret it- I promise. Perhaps do Forty Six & Two next. For a bit of Jungian Shadow Work. Psychology Philosophy and Spiritual principles abound in much of TOOL's music. Pro Tip-U may want to brush up on the Corpus Hermeticum at some point in ur TOOL journey. Enjoy! I subscribed and am here for it. As will be the #TOOLARMY I'm sure. 🐚
Sköl 🧠⚕
Thanks! Glad you liked it. More to come…👍
Best Tool synopsis ever.
Corpus hermeticum YES!!🤣
This song helped me process so much and improved my relationship
Great to hear! Thanks for watching!
If urban legend is correct they used the same group that did Cirque du Soleil for the video. You may enjoy Eulogy as well Aenema would be fun too. Just to hear a professional analysis of the songs.
TOOL is one its kind. no-one else does it better...
Keep rocking Maynard. Deep deep music.
Thanks for watching.
Can't wait until you listen to more of this band. 4 geniuses met and produced some of the most meaningful music that I've ever heard since Pink Floyd.
Thanks for your comment! This music is really great. 👍🛠️
Preach it brother!
Tool has no bad songs, for real❤ my band since 93. Pleaee do more Tool
Definition of a great band IMO. The entire catalog is a work of art not just rushed to production.
"Finding beauty in the dissonance"
Followed by a diminished chord.
Literal and physical dissonance!
There are people that need to *listen to* this song that will never even allow themselves to *hear* this song.
Thanks for watching and listening.
46 and 2 or Right in Two next! Great reaction! Welcome to the Tool Army.
Fantastic song and I loved your take on it. Spiral out.
Appreciate it! Thanks 🙏
Great finding this video of yours! Love Tool and listening to their songs has always driven me to some kind of state no other music has, like something touching deep in my fibers. Love your analysis and reaction as well, look forward for more videos! Greetings from Arg🇦🇷🖤
Glad you enjoyed it! More to come! 🙏👍🎵
What a splendid reaction. My late husband had a Master's in psychology and absolutely worshiped at the altar of Tool. (And by extension, Bill Hicks, after I got him the CD collection.) Yes, Maynard is magick, isn't he? I had to chuckle at your insistence of playing this at your next session. While I admire your plan, I'm not guaranteeing a warm reception from your clients! A delightful video, sir, and I look forward to hearing more from you! (Particularly if you're going to be enjoying more Tool. You'll benefit like crazy) You'll be asked to do "Aenima". Do a few others first.) Great stuff!
Many thanks for your kind words. Thank you for watching. More to come! 😀
Oh boy, are you in for a ride. So much to unpack lyrically in literally every TOOL/Maynard song. The meanings also change perspective, imo, as we grow and change. Keep em coming! Spiral Out🌀
Sounds great. Thanks for watching! 🙏🎵
Tools music is a psychological and spiritual journey. You should definitely do more reactions to their lyrical content. On pretty much the opposite end of the spectrum (much darker and nihilistic undertones) I'd recommend Slipknot's earlier albums; especially Iowa. I've always thought Corey Taylor was a very good lyricist.
Amazing breakdown
Appreciate you! 🙏
To follow this band, you almost need to start at the beginning. Each album was a leap in maturity, in both sound and lyrical content. But all have the same genius behind them. Not to belittle your profession but I’ve gotten more from listening to Tool than any therapy I’ve been to.
welcome to the rabbit hole of TOOL. the only way out is to go deeper and SPIRAL OUT!
Thanks! 🙏
Great reaction ! Ill have to see what else you got on here :)
Glad you liked it! Welcome!
Sorry, Maynard Has an amazing voice. I wanted to tell Jim how much I really enjoyed this video and your reactions to this song, but really every Tool song is more of an Experience than just hearing a song. I’ve been going to a therapist since I was 19 and know that it has helped me tremendously, so i totally salute Jim for trying to help people in this world.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for shining light my way!
T.Y. welcome to the family 🙏 your insight was excellent. Suggest Parabola, Sober, The Pot, H, Fear Inoculum, Hush, Wings pt2 and etc. It's an amazing journey 🙏
Thanks! I’ll check them out.
Maynard had an amazing voice plus the next level lyrics are icing on the cake. Every member’s extraordinary talent stands out in their songs making them an All-Time Great in my book.
Well said!
A great explanation of the songs meaning. Listening & singing along for years and never heard it this way. I'd love your review of the song RIGHT IN TWO. Thank you
Really glad you got something helpful from this. Shine on! ✌️
Really cool hearing an explanation of this song from a psychotherapist's perspective, made me understand this song that much more. I'm glad you really enjoy this song as much as I do.
Glad to hear it!
You're gonna love "The Grudge"...
I’ll check it out. Thank you 🙏
Family therapy textbook? I agree! Lmao, my new favorite reaction channel, oh man you're in for a ride. Please react to more rock/metal. Greetings from Philippines!
Glad you enjoyed it! Stay tuned for more! 🙏🎵
Great Reaction!! Been listening and going to their shows since the mid 90’s. One of the most cerebral lyricists there is. Oh and they’re incredible Musicians.
Try Right into and the grudge…
Awesome! Thanks so much. 🙏
Thank you thank you I've loved this song since it came out but never understood or so well till now and it's so felt relevant to my current situation❤
Great to hear! Glad you’re enjoying.
Tool is all good. The Grudge, Right in Two, Vicarious, Lateralus and The Holy Trinity are must listens.
Awesome. Thanks for watching!
@@PsychotherapistReacts i listen daily to tool and my differing emotions and stages ofmlife dictate which songs i listem to more of. This band has immensely changed my outlook on life for the better.
Spiral out, keep going 🌀 🌀 🌀...
Thanks for the encouragement! 🙏🎵
*Would anyone else like to see therapists dig deeper into the visual symbology in these videos? I appreciate the interpretation of the lyrics but to not deeply investigate the visuals is leaving a lot on the table. I am thinking along the lines of archetypes, the unconscious, religious symbolism, etc (think Jung/Joseph Campbell). Love your work Jim!*
Thanks mucho for the feedback! I love these musical geniuses! More content on the way.✌️🙏
TOOL & A Perfect Circle &
Puscifer
The MJK Trifecta
Great reaction! They are masters of their craft. The TOOL Army is obsessed and will follow you on this journey you've begun. 🌀
Wow, that’s great! I’m glad the Tool Army is here! 🙏🎵🛠️
Great video. You must listen to and analysis the song "46 & 2" by tool. It's all about shadow work for the body. Also the grudge is a banger. Enjoy.
I'll check it out!
I'd like to see you break down prison sex by tool
Dude just make a roulette wheel with every Tool song on it. MJK is a poetic genius
From the Freudian "Forty Six and 2", the haunting beauty of "H", the tragedy of "Wings for Marie", the hopeful spiritualism of "Parabola" and the dark cycle of abuse with "Prison Sex" you can't miss
I’ll check them out. Thank you for sharing the info. Glad you’re here.
Eureka! Metal Health.
A while back I had listened to TOOL and didn’t really get it. The I had a bad accident that shattered my leg and I spent a month in hospital with many surgeries and the occasional mention of the possibility of amputation. During that time I listen to “the patient”, then listen to TOOL all over again and then I understood. It’s hard to explain but it may be best put by my roommates, I thought so much about “Schism” and I talked with them about it and they said in both a joking way and a very direct way. “Your leg had a schism and you understood”. Silly story but everyone who connects with TOOL has something that made them click.
Glad to hear something good came out of that difficult experience with your leg. Shine on!
Yup, I'm not the first saying Tool is therapeutic. That's even before diving into the lyrics.
After some personal realizations recently, I now wonder if this song is specifically about narcissistic type relationships. The mind-meld and parasitic themes have a new look for me after going through “relating” to a couple people. Not everything in the song fits that theme, I guess, but could be.
That’s the great thing about art! It can be interpreted in different ways. Sounds like you’re connecting in a healthy way. 😁
A great song by the lead singer's other band A Perfect Circle might interest you. It's at the end of an album called The 13th Step. It's a themed album about the struggles of addiction.
Gravity - A Perfect Circle
It's a wonderful song that a lot of people in recovery play all the time.
Thanks for sharing this. Appreciate you being here. 🙏
13th Step is a freakin 🔥🔥🔥 - sooo good! It’s a concept album about addiction & recovery more or less …
Check out pushit album version next. I believe the song about patterns of self abuse from a child archetype.
That's the thing with Tool songs. They can be really deep with double meaning or just about bum stuff
You should do Vicarious next.
I’ll check it out. Thank you! 🙏
So much of Tool's music lends itself to psychological and philosophical analysis. There's also a lot of spiritual/religious exploration and critique, especially the Lateralus and 10000 Days albums, while Fear Inoculum, gets into issues of self-reflection, maturing/aging, loss and rediscovery of identity.
Sounds great. Thanks!
Somehow Tool have always managed to come up with a precious song, a gift for the most significant moments in my life. Fear Inoculum helped me so much psychologically through my early widowhood and cancer. Music, and especially Tool's music, helped me to find a strength that I didn't think I had, and a way through those issues you mention.
Tool are just the best. I'm so glad that Schism is featured today, it's a personal favourite.
Spiral in ...
Way to do it. Out of all musicians you can’t find deeper meaning with more than one way to analyze lyrics to fit how you are feeling that day
These guys are on another level. They have a great chemistry together. Really enjoyed this one!
Check out Tool - Pushit. It's another relationship song.... Released a few years before this song
I will…thanks.
I also wanted to add, now that i'm seeing this again so many years later, I think they're also vaguely equating the concept of black holes and white holes with the room that is stacked on top of itself, a white hole nothing can ever enter, a black hole nothing can ever leave, I kinda can see how that relates to the concept of people not being able to communicate, check out Culling Voices from their last album, it's about dealing with psychopathy in the world
Be careful with the Tool rabbit hole, but please continue analyzing their music. I love watching professionals confirm what we've known about them for 30 years. Thanks!!
Noted!
Keep going in on Tool Oh watch lyric videos their videos are to trippy
Thanks for watching. Appreciate the tip about those trippy ones. 🎵
excellent listening skills!
Thank you kindly! More to come.
For now just let a little light in once in a while. It can come from the strangest of places if you look at it right.😊
Shine on!
Definitely do MOOOORE tool. They're absolutely genuine and genius
Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for the feedback! 👍
Let the TOOL 🌀 begin!! 😎
Thanks. I’m glad you’re here.
I had to rewind to make sure I heard correctly ‘I’m licenced psychotherapist Jim Morrison’.
It’s actually Jim Morris. But I do like The Doors! 😀
May I humbly request a reaction from you doing Benjamin Tod's 'Using Again' this one would be very helpful to soooo many people who are, know of or have a family member struggling. It's a very open and honest song about himself
As always, I enjoy your reactions and the insights you bring. Thank you!
I'll check it out! Thanks 🙏
You just listen to one of the greatest bands of all time with four of the greatest musicians of all time. The drummer is literally considered one of the best in the world. There will be more odd time signatures And polyrhythms and phenomenal lyrics.
I'd recommend not watching any of tools, videos. They are really trippy and none of them have anything to do with the song or the lyrics. Just watch audio but always have the lyrics in front of you or subtitled. The journey begins.
Thanks for the heads up! Glad you’re here.
I had really forgotten how good the Schism video is, thanks for starting your rabbit hole!
Glad you liked it! More to come!
The grudge cool song!!!
Glad you’re here!
TOOL is my soul musicl. Its my gospel connection to God.
Thanks for watching! 🙏
8:58 - My read on these - whatever 'conflict' they're having was in that strange pseudo-vein that was in that guy's throat, you see him dancing in liberation once it's been removed but even after being removed it turned into something that chased the female entity (I think the alienness of these figures is to abstract the motifs and avoid political and socioeconomic embroilments), maybe they're hinting at the after-effect such as her priming for conflict (from his previous verbal) catching all of the loose ends after the argument goes slack? That's the best interpretation I can come up with.
React to Tool - Prison Sex next.
3 Libras - A Perfect Circle
Same lead singer. Relationship song
Hollow - A Perfect Circle
Sexaholic
Prison Sex - TOOL
The destruction of abuse
Reflection - TOOL
Exiting the ego
that was great
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching.
Welcome to the next level. Now you have opened a new set of books. Listen every song on every disk.
Maynard is known to have studied Carl Jung and it comes through on much of his lyrics.
Thanks for sharing this. He certainly demonstrates a unique ability to clearly state complex concepts. I really enjoyed this one. Hope you did too.
Yeah, I'm gonna echo the other comments here and say he's a lyrical genius. Maynard opened my eyes to shit. Good to see a psychotherapist analyzing it. It's the therapy I can afford!
Glad you’re enjoying it!
Dive into more of Tool's songs. They're named that because they are a tool to heal you. You'll have a field day.
Edit: Please do Pushit
I really enjoyed this one! Thanks for watching! 🙏
Comedy gold! You got em 😉
Thanks for the positive vibes. 🙏🎵
I'd maybe play a lyrics video for patients but - I'm less sure about the actual video for it. While I appreciate the video I also realize that I probably wouldn't have gotten it on first view and a lot of people would be too put off by the video to get to the message.
You had good points but what I would have loved to see is a more in-depth analysis after the song ended.
But hey, you do you and perhaps you try that on the future reactions and see if people (other than I) like it or not. :)
I have now commented, liked and even subscribed so let's see where this "relationship" goes. xD
Glad that you’re here! Thanks for subbing!
You should check out Garbage "#1 Crush" & "Only Happy When It Rains", Cannons "Fire For You" and Velvet Revolver "Fall To Pieces".
Thanks for the suggestions. 🎵
Thanks for reviewing this.
Thanks for watching!
i think you will enjoy songs like vicarious and sthinkfist
I’ll check it out. Thanks 🙏
The Grudge
Thanks for watching.
🛠️T⚙️⚙️L🛠️ helps us all be better humans 🙏 great reaction looking forward to your thoughts on other tracks like “the Pot” and “Ænima”
Awesome to hear. I’ll check them out. Thanks!
8:50 ego distortions as pests
Thanks for watching!
I think I belong here, like and sub from Hamburg, Germany ✌💚
Awesome. Thanks for subbing. Welcome.
Love your reaction! For me, Tool is therapy! When the Lateralus album came out, it shook my thinking. Here was a band trying to psychologically help people! Their art has taught me to let go of my grudges, live in the present, integrate my shadow, crucify my Ego, don't be a hater and embrace my divine humanity. More Tool please.
Well said! Thanks for being here.
Welcome to the Tool Army. Enjoy the ride
Thanks! 🙏
