    I’m Asian, I would say that appropriation is becoming more common than appreciation. I feel like being Asian now is “cool” because of the internet spreading the positives of Asian culture, when in the past, it was seen as weird/outdated. I used to be bullied and outcasted in middle school for being the only Asian and having people see my culture as weird. Now, I see so many middle schoolers into Asian media, food, and anything Asian in general now that the internet over the years fetishized the culture and made it cool. It also made a lot of creeps that have targeted Asians, including me, for fetish reasons, and that’s starting to really ruin the entire concept of e-culture. The targeting of young teen audience also bothers me, as some parts of egirl culture is simply just not for young impressionable teens who haven’t started even thinking of college, work, or their future. It can be introduced correctly and in a healthy nonfetishized way, but lately, this isn’t the case.

      Its disturbing how a culture can "trend" like that.

    As a Japanese Chinese born in America, the Asian culture in America really differs from actual Japanese fashion. When I visited Japan, a lot of people wore suits or more formal clothing, not anime cosplay because of the type of work. At the beginning, I thought it was cool that people have a positive look on East Asian culture and looks because I was always afraid of post pearl harbor racism. But now, I think it's just kinda overused. I don't necessarily think of it as racism I just think of it as tiring, overused, and over sexulized.

    I love how having dyed hair immediately makes you an e-girl, probably doesn't help I wear pokemon clothing or pokemon scrunchies in my hair and have overwatch keyrings on my car keys so I don't hide my gaming obsession. That's cuz you are one. It is not "hiding" to not advertise your interests everywhere. You can talk about them. But advertising that you love Pokemon via scrunchies is unnecessary in order to enjoy Pokemon. Put the stuff away. Putting away the Fortnite keychain isn't "hiding" your interest. It is just not making your gaming interests part of your fashion. It's being a grown adult. You sound like a child. Are you? If so, I'll allow it. If not, grow up.

    coming from a (southeast) asian girl, there’s definitely heavy appropriation of especially east asian culture with little respect to the culture itself when it comes to non-asian online personalities like egirls-i find that east asian features and aesthetics are also used to enhance a more “childlike” look and is borderline fetishization most times to appeal to their audiences, which tend to be full of people more notorious for their fetishization. i find this reinforces the harmful stereotype of asian women being more “youthful” than their non-asian counterparts, leading to the imitation of asian features which is obviously wrong
    i admittedly had my own egirl phase in high school, but i think everything is a can of worms & there’s no benefit other than attention from a questionable demographic and monetary gain ofc

    I’m not a girl, but I am Asian and even I feel the effects of the west’s fetishization of Asian culture. For the most part it’s genuine appreciation and curiosity, but I’ve met strange people who both accused me of being an “influencer” or people who wanted to know every single thing of my life because of my heritage. One old woman also blamed me for using my phone to ‘sexualize and demoralize the kids in the US’, like no I’m just scrolling through Instagram. Being Asian in America now a days is it’s own weird form of hell and paradise. Unfortunately, as long as these content creators remain popular, I think the fetishization of Asian culture will continue much to the annoyance of literally much of the Asian population in the world.

It might be my autism making my dislikes much more potent, but their promiscuous, attention seeking behaviour was gross to me, that, and the fact that they're terrible terrible people yet people still adore them..and I'm here doing my very best to be the best I can be and standing alone. Sure, I wish I looked like them. I have pink hair down to my butt but the rest is ick. But my views aren't guided by jealousy. I'm just really, really put off by obnoxious behaviour. and don't get me started on the ahegao shit. That made me turn inside out with second hand embarrassment. I feel like putting the blanket label of cultural appropriation on the entire e-girl aesthetic is... it doesn't have enough nuance. For the fox eyes thing - it has a history in Western culture, too. Far before anime and Japanese video games and Korean dramas rose in the cultural zeitgeist, western people have been attempting a fox-eyed look. At the same time, I feel like the fetishisation of asian people in general has gotten worse over the years, not better. I don't know if that's true, though, or if it just feels that way because people have been talking about it more. Personally, I've noticed more creeps acting weird towards me now vs 7 years ago when I was 20 and a prime target for creeps. BUT I also wasn't on social media as much back then, and more people in general are on social media now vs 7 years ago.
    Idk, I just feel like the entire conversation around cultural appropriation has drifted a lot from its original intention. I don't think it's cultural appropriation for Americans to get into Asian media. If you follow that thought to its conclusion, you'll arrive at 'white people should only watch white things and asian people should only watch asian things', and that's... xenophobia. That's xenophobia and racism. That's bad. Those are bad things. Enjoying a foreign country's media and treating people from that country as people and not fetishized caricatures are two different things, and I think it's better to dissociate them rather than lump them together. Plus, cultural appropriation was originally a term for African-American people in America to discuss the SPECIFIC ways their culture intersects with the dominant white culture, because of their shared history and the long, long history of oppression and disenfranchisement. A lot of cultural appropriation discourse falls apart when you try to apply it to other ethnic groups, because a lot of talk about cultural appropriation was originally coined for that specific experience.
    I mean, yeah, some of the white girls are definitely appropriating asian culture, but it just feels like such a minor issue compared to, say, the post-covid wave of anti-Chinese racism that's spilling into other East Asian ethnic groups. I just feel like a lot of people are annoyed by e-girls and grasping at cultural appropriation to make their annoyance seem more legitimate. You can just be annoyed by them! It also feels like the newest iteration of nerds trying to gatekeep the nerd community from fake sexy nerd girls. Misogyny isn't 'in' anymore, so you have to couch it in terms like cultural appropriation and emotional damage. Seriously, some of the criticism I've seen of egirls directly mirror the shit men would say 10 years ago about those evil sexy sluts pretending to be nerdy gamer girls so they can infiltrate nerd spaces and brainwash men with their evil sexy boobs. I side-eye anyone who criticises egirls without giving the same amount of attention and scrutiny to male influencers who trick their followers into crypto scams.

    While the fox eye challenge is atrocious those images of the goth clothing trend are epically funny to me as being attributed to East Asian dress style suddenly…. Hey that is how 90’s goth kids dressed on the regular. Also the subset at that time that was into anime was small trust me people thought we were watch cartoons. All the kids I knew growing up who were into anime would have been stoked to actually go to Japan and drop into the culture. We tried learning the language, history, cuisine, culture… all of it. How yougins approach it today may be different but these authors need to do some actual fashion research. The cosplay stuff is because people love the fking characters why the fck has it suddenly become trashy to recreate a character’s actual look? I feel like it is becoming the new form of gatekeeping. Keep it up and industries will die. Also if the anime made in the country by a legit local fetishized their own people stop blaming everyone else for liking what your own people are supporting. Either both are wrong or not.

    I hate to say it. But I don’t think this community or the practices are going away any time soon. I’m considered an e-girl. But I don’t dress very Asian inspired at all. I wear a lot of black and intricate makeup/eyeliner designs. I’m very honest with my fans and am always myself on socials. I don’t try to gimmick them or take their money because they “simp” over me. And that’s probably why I only have around 6k followers. Men LOVE women that dominate them and take advantage of them. And even if they don’t, they see right past it because they’re so horny and just want attention. I wish people would look for smaller creators like myself. I try to be a good person and not appropriate anyone else’s culture. Just be my own person and be honest. I wound up only taking orders from two customers before I was just done. talking to these men is fucking exhausting, both of them immediately after like thirty minutes were already talking about how I should go to them and be their girlfriend. they got SO attached and obsessive, they BOTH began offering to pay for nudes after only speaking once for about an hour. that is NOT what I was looking for nor did I want to do. they’re so fucking pushy and don’t seem to understand that no. no I am not using this as a dating app you are paying me to talk to you. overall just very uncomfortable and I dipped out pretty quick. part of me felt bad for taking advantage of them or whatever, but any pity quickly disappeared once they continuously began pressuring me to do sex work for them.

    I feel like being somewhat popular on social media and streaming platforms isn't too far off from being a 100% e-girl. You look at the most popular women in there, they're always dressed either provocatively or in quirky ways (the usual super frilly pink skirts, chains, rainbow hair with multiple accessories, etc) and even the Vtuber community is choke full of women who fake an entire personality to appear more innocent and cute, down to doing the anime voice. In the end, both sides are just an act; an act done with the goal of earning money, but also earning loyal followers who will defend you no matter what. An e-girl nowadays is really not that far off from your average big streamer.

    I don't think it's cultural appropriation, nobody is doing it to be offensive or insulting. It's more appreciation. I have a lot of appreciation for Asian culture. Like seriously, thank you for anime, the amazing food, the scary folklore, fashion trends, and the beautiful country. I'm part Asian on my dad's side and he wasn't in my life so I missed out on a lot of my Asian culture. Even though I wasn't able to grow up in it I still love experiencing it, and I think it's perfectly fine if others want to experience it too. As long as it's in love and appreciation not hate and malice.
    Edit: I'm not trying to defend the people that actually do appropriate Asian culture and exploit it to make money. I guess I should've been a little more clear about that. I just meant the people that actually do appreciate it and all it has to offer. Not the people who sexualize it.

      I would agree that enjoying Asian foods, music, wearing Korean or Japanese fashion, or trying out Korean skincare or makeup is not appropriation. (Korean makeup looks better on me. I don’t do it to look Asian, I do it because it makes my eyes look bigger)
      But here is where it crosses the line: doing their makeup or getting surgery to make it appear as if they have the genetic eye shape that Asian people have. This is not a part of Asian culture, because Asian people don’t do this. They already have this feature genetically.
      And another place where it crosses the line is when people start “acting Asian.” In truth, they are not acting Asian, they are playing out stereotypes and therefore spreading them. Especially the stereotype that Asian women are more s*xual than other women, more submissive/subservient and more child-like. These stereotypes are HARMFUL AF. It leads to fet*shization, which puts Asian women at risk of assault, abuse by romantic partners, expectations by partners that they will be submissive and subservient, etc.
      I don’t the the intent of the e-girls who appropriate Asian culture is to mock. It certainly isn’t to spread stereotypes or put Asian women at risk, but regardless of their intent, the result is still the same. Maybe these e-girls who do this have no idea that they are causing harm, so it’s a forgivable offence if they find out and change what they do. But regardless of the e-girls, it’s an important conversation to have.

    • @ArbitraryOutcome
      @ArbitraryOutcome Рік тому +13

      It's a very case-by-case thing. Merely liking a particular culture or facet of it isn't appropriation, and usually is appreciation in good faith. Appropriation occurs where one just reduces a culture to an aesthetic or a specific fetishized idea. The latter can happen both out of ignorance or out of malice.

    • @error404webpagenotfound
      @error404webpagenotfound Рік тому +4

      @@lisapeesalemonsqueezah3241 I agree with everything you said. The only thing I'd argue a little bit is the surgery or makeup aspect. Some do do it to look more Asian but a lot of people do it to get that sultry, slim, sexy eye look, which is preferred or liked by more cultures than just Asian. Arabian is a good example where, if I'm not mistaken, the whole "fox eye" trend came from. It's a popular eyeliner style in that culture. I would even consider that maybe it's not even Asian in origin at all. But only because of the fact that Asian beauty trends tend to lean for a larger more "western" eye look. They even get double eye lid surgery to achieve the look. But that is not considered appropriation by many people bc many people think you cannot appropriate western/white culture. And a lot of the times they're just wearing a winged eyeliner, which I wouldn't really consider appropriation. The only surgery I could justify the appropriation argument with is the brow lift surgery (I don't know the exact term for it) where they lift the corners of your eyes up and the tail of your brow up. This raises and slims your eye and makes you appear more "exotic" looking. It's a popular surgery in more than just one cultural community though.
      I've never heard of the stereotype that Asian women are more sexual, submissive, and subservient though. I guess I could see where it would come from though, with the whole "anime waifu" stereotype. I have heard the more child like one though. This comes from the way some Asian people act. The whole cutesy, pastel, adorable aesthetic. They're perceived as more child like because of the way they make everything cute. Youth is actually something prevalent mostly in Japanese culture. With people even going as far as to make their teeth crooked and accentuating their eye bags because they think it gives a more "youthful" appearance. Anime also has a lot to do with the stereotypes. And when you start getting into the Anime/Manga side of it is when it usually starts to become more sexualized. Anime has a large western presence, it's extremely popular with a wide range of people. So it has a heavy influence in the way some people view Asian culture. And that can go bad in terms of sexualization really quickly. We all know how sexual anime can get.
      It really is a case by case thing like the person above said. There are definitely people who use the stereotypes, style, and culture for bad/sexual things. But there's also people who appreciate it and just enjoy everything Asian culture has to offer. I will say that is the most copied culture by far though. It has a lot of influence.

      I'm inclined to agree. It's largely a case-by-case basis and as long as it's not from a place of prejudice and malice, it should at least be tolerated. I understand the issue of boiling an entire culture to its aesthetics instead of learning the intricacies of the culture in question, and that is a genuine issue, but criticizing people for wearing T-shirts with Japanese kanji on it isn't really appropriating the culture. Weeaboos aren't cringe because they respect Japanese culture and know a lot about it, but instead like Japan for its pop culture and nothing else.

    I'm only half Asian (I'm Blasian) and in my opinion I don't "look Asian" at all, not even close 😂, but I personally don't see any "appropriation" in this. People also tend to say the same thing to cosplayers, specifically Black cosplayers. I don't like others standing in front of me and deciding for me and my culture that something is "wrong" or "appropriation", and anyone who IS of either of my races agrees that it's appropriation, I still simply disagree overall. I have my own separate opinions on the concept of appropriation as a whole, but I digress (if I said that correctly, lol). I'm specifically half Japanese, and I LOVE when people accept the culture, especially anime otaku and gaming otaku cultures, as I myself am considered both an anime and gaming otaku and I love seeing others love it ❤️
    At the same time, there has always been a weird feeling from people who worship Asian-ness as a whole, and from people who hate Asian people. I have anime acquaintances who I DON'T tell I'm half Japanese right away because they either think I'm lying just because I like anime, or they become scary obsessed with me and stop treating me like a human being and more like a favorite character. Other than that, I don't tend to feel the effects of any appropriation, personally. As I said, I'm half Black as well, and I tend to feel any race-related issues THERE more, particularly negative. And I am actually someone who is very open about the csa I suffered and how it's messed me up (tl;dr I am schizophrenic with cptsd, anxiety and depression and cannot work because I cannot function "properly). And for some reason, people who are fans or antis of Japanese culture tend to think that because it's difficult to be open about that type of abuse in Japanese culture (it's getting SO much better btw) that I myself shouldn't be open and should instead be ashamed of it, so that's kinda strange too.
    OFFLINE though, I went through a period where I hid the Japanese part, because we have a large Asian elderly community where I live, and they're mostly non-Japanese, and upon hearing I'm half Japanese, they will tell me bad things Japanese people did in the war or how Japanese culture stole their food and language, while I'm standing there trying not to cry, and will say things like "You're half, you can still be saved" and it just hurts.
    THEN there are fellow Asian people who will call any of us who don't agree to be mad like them "White Worshipers" so that's fun too.
    There is good and bad in everything, so Asian people and non-Asian people will have varying opinions on this. I saw two Asian people in the comments who would probably disagree with me, and that's OKAY. Everyone has their own opinions. I have enough negativity in my brain, I'm not gonna willingly be mad at them for having differing opinions ❤️
    EDIT: I JUST posted this like ten minutes ago, but of course this doesn't touch on every nuance. That would take a whole entire video that's HOURS long for myself or others to do. This is just a quick peek into some of what I think, and I'm just ONE person, not the spokesperson for any particular nuance 😁😁
    That's all. This isn't to argue though, I'm just answering your question as honestly as I can ❤️❤️

    My issue with "cultural appropriation" is that every race and future is guilty of it. And if one type is offensive, then it is a offensive. So where does it stop? Do we a stick to our own culture, looks, the way we dress? The world has always taken aspects of other cultures and it seems we are all guilty of it to a degree.
    As for infanillzation, women are told from a very young age that growing older is bad and no body will want you of you do, that's not a EGirl issue, that's a women's issue put on is by men, who who can age as they want.

    I didn’t realize that adopting an aesthetic that was similar to anime and manga characters was somehow asianfishing. I guess every anime/manga cosplayer in exist is somehow appropriating.

    2:42 If the "influencer" has so few morals that they would say yes to being an obvious propaganda arm of their local government, that says all I need to know about them. I'm not against Governments in general, but if the "influencer" is going to accept money to trick impressionable youths(which is exactly what they are doing), then that's on them. And I personally believe that each and every one of them should have to spend an hour a day looking at the photos of everyone who dies from their "influence".
    19:36 It's not just the clothes. If it were just the clothes then the argument would be valid as to if the person just likes to dress that way. Context is key here. And part of the context is how one acts while dressed in those clothes. If one is acting in a sexual manner while dressed in these infantile or revealing outfits, then they are intentionally sexualizing the look. I am not saying that it okay to go after them for this. But in most cases they are old enough to understand what they are doing. And trying to make the argument "I just like the clothes" becomes disingenuous. Just be honest as to why one is doing it. We all know sex sells.
