@Jpeg skeleton the official diagnosis is common variable immunodeficiency. Her body is unable to make antibodies and is unable to properly fight infections. She basically has genetic AIDs. It's sad that people who could be fans of such a wholesome kettle would stoop so low. I fell into the camp of people who thought it was relatively harmless to play the games because there was no direct connection between the development team and JK Rowling's estate. Even if there was, I still don't think bullying, doxxing and harassing people for playing a video game is at all a reasonable or sane response. I'm sad that VOMs didn't stand up for her, but at the end of the day, business is business. I'm just glad she was able to start over again and she didn't leave the internet entirely. I think the internet needs more of that kind of positivity.

    • @JohnnyYeTaecanUktena
      @JohnnyYeTaecanUktena 10 місяців тому +7

@@creative-name5279 Nah the internet needs more people to push back against them. As just like Hell you are going to get laughed at if you are not willing to show that you are not going to back down. Just look at Silvervale a ball of positivity yet labeled as a Terf because she just wanted to have fun on stream and play the game and she even said that she does not condone Rowling's actions or views. But point out that she did nothing to warrant the offensive term terf other than playing the game on stream and they will say you are arguing in bad faith. They even dehumanize her by calling her Terfvale all the time instead of her name which dehumanizing is against twitter ToS the last i checked as Terf is a derogatory term. And again Silver did nothing to warrant being called a terf and terf is short for Trans-exclusionary Radical Feminist and is she did then i would love to see the evidence and no buying and playing Hogwarts Legacy does not count hell that game is inclusive as fuck and has actual trans characters in it which is a middle finger to JK.
But the Freaks are blinded by their hate boner for JK that they don't even know that JK had no creative decision over the game even if she does get royalties for everything related to the Harry Potter universe. And they don't know how inclusive the game actually is nor will they listen or look.
Honestly i do not value Twitter freaks opinions or lives at all, because look at them they are just a bunch of fucking bullies that are trying to go on a power trip and you know damn well that they are never saying this shit IRL otherwise they will get their face knocked in and they know it. Then again this is coming from a hostile autistic person that definitely would punch the freaks in the face if they said their bs to my face or try to belittle me, and yes going to jail for assault would be worth it as the dumbasses needed the reality check. Granted if you ask my family they say i am hostile while i say i am not i just casually cuss a lot while strangers think i am being hostile as for some reason they did not grow up in the hillbilly south like i did

Also "Not saying I support pika being harassed but..." sounds a lot like "I'm not racist but..." and the only people who say that are racists so I feel like you might have supported the harassment campaign. A lot of us are “sexy alien kings”, “badass/sexy demon”, literally a chicken nugget with a face, or in my case, “great value dragonborn isekai protagonist”. We play a character. In my case, my character is pretty much me, just behind an avatar. But others get REAL into the role-play aspect and take on a whole new personality. It's actually just acting. i don’t think people truly recognize the damage that infantilization does to a person’s psyche. not just the consumer but for the creator as well. it is extremely dangerous to promote creators who use childlike behavior to their advantage. the problem is, there will always be an audience willing to take in that content & enjoy it in any sick way they want. it’s tricky.
however, i think it’s unfair to assume that all Vtubers are abusing their influence over their fans. as u said, it’s easy to dunk on furries or ‘weeaboos’ but it can be difficult to understand that these are real people with feelings.

    Vtuber here.
So, I personally use a vtuber because I have a neurological condition that gets worse when I have the camera on my actual face. It's a lot easier for me to use a vtuber to represent myself than to suffer through the pain that my neuro condition inflicts on me (I have tourette syndrome btw and tic triggers are varied and being on camera and knowing I'm being watched just happens to be one of mine). I am incredibly asexual, and I am not a lewdtuber. I don't do it for any sexual reason. I don't want to form any parasocial relationships in which a viewer lusts after me. I use the vtuber because I want to stream, and I want *something* to represent me, but I don't want to make my own health worse in doing so. I know many vtubers in the community who are very sweet and nice people, even if they go more on the lewd side of the spectrum. Many of us just want to provide a fun or chill space to hang out. As for the idea that we're just playing a character and we're not genuine, I find that a lot of people I know in the community are pretty genuine people. V tubers are similar to E girls or other Internet personalities. It feels like the main reason why people have an issue with it is just because you can’t see their face. From what I’ve seen most V tubers don’t intentionally sexualize themselves, it’s their fandom. Just like any other fandom you’re gonna get people who want to make horny fan art of a character they find attractive. Now some V tubers do have a more adult aimed audience but it’s usually fairly tame from what I’ve seen at least content wise. I think it’s silly that people get upset about people hiding behind a character or persona. People have done this for a very long time it’s just that it’s become easier. No one is truly themselves we all act a bit different when we’re with specific groups. We all play a character even if it’s in very minor fashion. It feels like people hate fun. Why hate on people who are having fun with what they’re doing? I can’t imagine being so miserable you go out of your way to bother people like V tubers or Furries.

Her graduation date coincided with the end of the financial year in Japan, so it's unlikely that the drama even caused her depart sooner. People are just latching on to things to blame, because nobody really knows why.
It could just be the case that she got sick of streaming and wanted to move on with her life.

The big thing with Pikamee at least for her, I can't speak on Silvervale as I don't know anything about the talent behind the persona, is that she has some IRL baggage. Pikamee had revealed that she had been severely bullied in Japan for being a hafu, half Japanese and half (anything else realistically, but in her case) American by both peers and teachers alike where she had to both dye her hair and buy color contacts to just blend in and eventually became a NEET for a time. It was only with streaming that she actually stopped being a NEET and made friends for the first time in a very long time. I'm fairly certain while she was considering quitting for other unrelated reasons prior to the drama as everyone moves from job to job all the time when they feel like they've made their impact and want to move on, it was still going to be far off since at the beginning of the year she said her year milestone goals were to make it to 1 million subs on UA-cam and get through at least 30 games in her Steam library. That doesn't sound like someone who was going to quit any time soon and would be a hard press in 90 days without the month-long break she took. The unwarranted harassment likely expedited any plans to retire from later to sooner; and while people claim to it being planned, there was an entire month of silence and her talking to people, including the VOMs project owner, behind the scenes. This also probably brought on PTSD moments as well though we have to assume or speculate as it was never officially confirmed and I wouldn't blame her from not saying anything.
Another thing too to take into consideration is what we consider news over in the West doesn't even make it into headlines in the East. Things about Rowling? No articles made the rounds over there, maybe one or two perhaps, but none made traction like they do over here. Even looking at an older stream where she collabed with Kson prior to the year, she and Kson were unawares and this was despite people in the chat going "ono" and the like, and Kson is also a EN crossover VTuber as well but lives in Japan. Some may argue that "they should have looked into it", but isn't that victim blaming? Listen, if you don't like Rowling (and I don't either for many other reasons including the retconning), that's fine. If you like her works because you can participate in "Death of the Author" and appreciate the time you had with those works, that's also fine. You can boycott all past and future projects involving the Potterverse all you want and more power to you; in the same way that people are boycotting Bud Light for their current marketing stunt. I don't like Bud Light, it tastes like piss water mixed with wheat; but that doesn't mean I'll go harass someone drinking it as that's just stupid. The harassment, death threats, and doxxing that was made against Pikamee was unwarranted, in the same way that death threats and doxxing (and by proxy harassment) towards LGBT streamers is unwarranted; you have to call out all sides of this stuff because all this did was cause the pendulum to swing the other way, these morons perpetuated the cycle once more as people on the /vt/ board on the Chans are going after those who harassed Pikamee and they're guaranteed to be a small subset of her audience. And while I don't support this action in one way or another, they turned a wholesome community who didn't care what you were into an outright Warhammer 40k Space Marine chapter overnight.
Another thing to take into consideration is that LGBT issues aren't seen on the same level in Japan as they are in the West. For many that are in her audience, this was their first exposure to that community and it has left a very, very bad impression with them. Fox is right about something, Pikamee does have a large reach, but not in the way he expects. She is friends with a lot of other VTubers in various agencies including the big agencies: Hololive through Ina, VShojo through both Ironmouse and Kson, and Nijisanji through Pomu. While I'm sure they all have their own views on the politics but don't show them as that'd discourage new people from watching them (and just a poor business practice in general when you're an entertainer), they all knew it was uncalled for and their audiences that watch them religiously and follow their socials know this as well expanding this ripple to borderline waves levels of impact.
The last thing I want to leave is this: Pikamee didn't stop getting harassed after capitulating to these people nor even after she retired as there are still nutjobs going out of their way to harass a person they can no longer ping officially. For example, one person who was recently suspended on Twitter threatened "grave bodily harm" (changed for potential TOS stuff, but a felony for which you can get like 10 years-life for if not capital punishment depending on your country or even state) to her while she streams with her avatar smiling and there were people still supporting that type of disgusting behavior. If you're in these communities and you notice people doing this, no matter who they are, call them out for it publically because all they're doing is draging you down in the mud for cheap internet points. I don't like harassment no matter who you are or if we politically disagree on everything. The fact that this isn't common sense anymore is a borderline "doomerpill" at times.

Using an avatar is no different from putting on a personality to stream with. People who decide to use an avatar can do so for various reasons, from privacy to simple comfort. It's not cheating at all since they need to use other gear for tracking, and they have to either commission their models and rigging, or make it themselves. There's also the case of Zentrya, since she communicated through Notepad until she started using TTS so she wouldn't be recognized by her voice -- a real possibility for VTubers out in the world.
Ironmouse is another special case, since she doesn't want to show viewers herself hooked up to her medical support equipment and depress them. She's said before she doesn't feel more like herself than when she's streaming with her VTuber avatars. Even her voice is the result of her physical condition, but she also tells us that if she is capable of such great things despite being bedridden most of the time, we really have no excuse to go after what we want, too.
As for authenticity, it doesn't really matter whether someone uses an avatar or not, they can still be authentic. It all depends on the personality, not the presentation. So sure, you can attract people to your stream with your looks, but they don't stay if they don't like your personality quirks or what you're saying or doing. That's why the fad where famous creators were getting their own avatars didn't last long. Meanwhile, creators like Projekt Melody, Shylily, Vox Akuma, and more can have over a million subscribers. Because people like _them_ and not just their avatars. _Any_ creator can accomplish this if that's what they want to do, avatar or none.
The case of Pikamee is more unfortunate than one might think at first: as a Half, she fit in neither Japanese nor American schools. VTubing was one of the few places she felt she truly fit in and belonged, and she said it was one of the things she wanted to keep doing as long as she could. Obviously her graduation was something that was long in the planning, and she'd have gone through it anyway within the year or so... but the hate she received simply for _saying_ she was going to stream a simple game accelerated those plans. And even then she took nearly a month to make that decision. She deserves none of the hate, and while Silvervale never intended 'Twitter freaks' to become a meme, she's no less right for calling them that as a result of their rampant overreaction.
Besides, Rowling gets a lot more money through Universal Studio tickets, LEGO, her publishers, than an ancilliarily-related game. And she'll get more because of the TV series reboot they're gonna do. She's already rich beyond the Twits' imaginings anyway. Nothing they do is going to affect Rowling, regardless of what you might believe about what she said about female spaces and competition as they relate to the trans community.

I, of course, did nothing to stop it. You reap what you sow. I merely did my best to dissuade some of the more crazed from targeting innocent members of the LGBT community, making sure their hatred was directed towards those that deserved it instead. When things like this happen, backlash is inevitable, and the fires of anger this generates cannot easily be extinguished. It is far more easy to simply try and draw their attention away from the innocent and make sure they target the people in the wrong. Even this isn’t easy, however. Some people still blamed the LGBT community as a whole, though I did my best to talk the ones I ran into down. I honestly hope that the people who did that to that poor VTuber realize that they did far more harm to the LGBT community than any stupid game ever could. This is an interesting video and there's been a lot of hell fire that's happened in the VTubing scene since then. I'm a little surprised you said Kizuna AI is the first VTuber, when she technically isn't. She's the first creator to coin the word "VTuber", but there's a lot of videos covering topics on who the "first vtuber" was. I'm being nit-picky, but you seem like the kind of person who tries to be thorough with your videos :p
it's also been confirmed that Pikamee had planned on graduating before Hogwarts, but it just expedited it. She is currently in Vshojo now and it's been rumored she had a contract lined up with Vshojo before this Hogwarts situation....so saying "if you cant handle the heat, get out of the kitchen" about Pikamee is a little insensitive and it's probably why people in the comments are getting snippy about it. Also she had to delete all of her content because VOMS is an a group (or agency? its not really confirmed) and but they act like every vtuber agency, where if a talent graduates, they delete all of their video content on their youtube channel and lock their twitter account. That's a very common thing to do for corporate VTubers.
Silvervale broke down and cried because Froot who was supposed to be her friend told her "we all make mistakes" meaning she did NOT support Silvervale through all of the Hogwarts harassment. Slivervale left Vshojo and released a clip talking about how she felt like her friends left her to fend for herself and they only wanted to talk to her when it was related to business. I don't think it was necessarily the Hogwarts harassment entirely, but the fact that she had to face the harassment alone and then someone who was supposed to be her friend shrugged it all off as "we all make mistakes"
I find the research paper and vtuber authenticity interesting, considering you as a youtuber are playing a persona. Twitch streamers and pretty much any influencer are playing some sort of character or persona. The difference with VTubers is that you just can't tie a flesh face to the avatar...and that upsets people. It makes it harder to doxx us, stalk us, or harrass us in public and for some reason people use that as a reason to dunk on us. It's pretty weird.
Overall I like your coverage on this, I knew all of these except the last one (cuz ya that's pretty crazy) and it's inspired me to make my own version!!!

My first time hearing about Quin's rant, and as a vtuber/former vtuber (laptop is acting up, can't stream, long story), I think I'll give my two cents.
First and foremost, I do think to *some* extent, he's not wrong. Yes, there are people in the vtubing space that are exactly as he says, both in reference to the streamer and the people watching the streamer. However, he seems to have it in his head that it's that way all across the board. Which, at least in my experience, is not the case at all. Not every vtuber is a person “using a fake voice and trying to sound like a 13-year-old”, which was a very ignorant and bad take, even if it does apply to some people in the community. A lot of people who vtube do it for a plethora of reasons. Some are scared to show their face, some do it for a creative outlet sorta thing, and others do it just because it's fun. There are more reasons than just what I've said, but the point I am trying to make is that not all of us are eGirls looking for simp money, or whatever.
Hell, I know several who aren't even lewd at all. One of them is literally a sister/nun (not sure what the difference is) and plays doom on stream and does bible study. There are so many people in the vtubing community, and a lot of them are wholesome, cool af people. Yes, we have our bad apples in the orchard, but the same can be said about any group of humans, regardless of sex, gender, creed, race, job, etc etc. I think Quin and his hate mob need to grasp the concept of maybe getting to know a community before judging it based on the most famous/infamous examples from said community. Because lumping us all together like that is stupid, and it makes you look like an ignorant douche. I mean, humankind has given birth to shitty people to all sorts of degrees. Does that make us *all* bad? No. It just means a lot of us are.
And regarding the voice thing, my voice is deep enough to make people's headsets vibrate, and I'm 27, so I'm not sure where he got the notion we all sound like 13-year-olds LMAO

About this Quin rant.. So many of these haters have NO idea about idol culture and it shows, it is such a big big part of Vtubing and ppl are HIRED to play roles (aka holo, niji) its PART of the entire thing they're not just streamers for the most part. Not to say that just because they play a role, they are not authentic, god no, anyone who actually watches vtubers knows as much. Yeah there are ppl with fake voice and problematic avatars but they are by far a minority. This dude just mad jealous
PS: there is no harm in using a fake voice. Its an art form called voice acting for a (Vtuber) character - sooo idfk why ppl get so pressed about that.

A lot of "real face" streamers or content creators also play some kind of role while they are on stream or doing a video. We see it a lot lately. and on the other hand, i have seen Vtubers who are more open about they life then streamers, just because they can and know they will not be stalked soo easily if they open up.

14:30 to be honest, this doesn't apply just to vtubers, this apply's to every person also in RL.
A TikToket who murdered his ex-wife, even though they had a daughter together.
A guy making videos about how to treat a dog the right way (saying violence is not an answer) getting a lot of Fame for it, but then accidentally uploaded an uncut video of herself hitting, spitting and pushing her doberman dog around, showing off the hypocrisy of herself and that she is abusive.
Or the hypocrisy of ppl protecting Hasbulla after he posted a video of him abusing his cat, just because this 20year old guy looks like a toddler... Of course him looking young alowes him to be and do hateful awful things he is totally aware of, I don't want to mention the politicians he has friends like contacted with who are known misogynistic, and even murderous men who have blood on their hands.
Shall I mention that Hasbulla said that he is really religious about Islam, I as a Muslim can assure you, he is not, hitting and abusing a cat is prohibited, a woman got all her sins forgiven because she shared her water with a cat.
Being good and protective to the weak and endangered is the main message of Islam.
But surely they don't care how the prophet thought, how he said that the woman who are the best Camel riders, are also the best women, the prophet had just good thoughts about independent woman, his first wife was one of them, almost 15years older then him, and had her own business, he stayed loyal to her, but misogynists who are now on the power won't acknowledge that!

In regards to Pikamee, the VOMS statement said that her graduation was decided back before she had decided to play Hogwarts/take an online hiatus in February. That being said, the fact that she was bullied so hard that she choose to leave the internet two months before her apparently planned debuted is really a horrible point for the Vtuber community. Her graduation could have been a final blaze of glory, but I feel like most people didn't see it that way because of the HL stuff. One of the shittiest things about Pikamee's ordeal is that Japanese people largely aren't aware of Rowling's transgressions. Moreover, the concept of "trans rights" isn't as advanced here. The government is still coming to terms with gays existing. Obviously anyone in their right mind who's aware of the situation wouldn't want to support Rowling, but pressing your beliefs without informing is extremely toxic and horrendous.
